A wonderful change of pace
kfo94942 September 2013
In this episode we get a change of pace and treated to an actually fun show for the actors and viewers alike. It all begins when a masked man robs the General Store and ties up Jonas and steals his money. But Jonas recognizes the masked man's voice as being Clint Dodie, a man that lives outside Dodge. With a blizzard approaching western Kansas, Matt and Chester set out to the Dodie farm to arrest Clint.

Upon arriving they find that Clint's wife is expecting a child and with cold weather approaching there is little wood for fire. So Matt and Chester help out Clint by cutting fire wood. There is some other chores that need to be done and Matt is not going to leave Clint's wife alone to fend for herself. But there is something going on at the Dodie's farm that will be revealed at the end of the show.

This is a show that there is no killing and minor violence action but the program is still entertaining to watch. Jack Elam and Betty Harford do a great job as the husband and wife team that come across as a real married couple. With Dennis Weaver providing comic relief to the show there is not much more to say but "Good Watch".

What a great anusing story with Jack Elam
cpolster16 December 2022
I was amused and who wouldn't be, watching this show. Jack Elam was a great actor playing good and bad guys. In this show he portrays a "smart" farmer that uses Matt Dillon and Chester to his advantage to do a few chores. While it is not a normal shoot 'em up it is quite enjoyable to watch. It is a great change that actually fits Gunsmoke. It shows a good side to the old west. I doubt any one else could have pulled off the role of Clint Dodie like Jack Elam. Though a limited cast, the writers did well. It is one of my favorite shows to watch when ever it is shown. I gave it a 9, not quite a 10 but it is close.

Jack Elam had a face for a bad man as well as for comedy

Thoroughly enjoyed this change of pace episode. Jack Elam steals the show. Watch this episode if you are needing a few good laughs. Never knew how funny Jack Elam could be. Have watched it 3 times over the last year and each time it's just as funny. It is by far my favorite comedy episode of Gunsmoke - not a laugh out loud thing but definitely watched with a smile on my face the whole time. Loved it.

An Amusing Departure

The one-eyed Jack Elam (Dodie) usually plays a bad guy. So when he's accused here of being the masked man who held up Jonas's store, we figure sure thing. Then too, he doesn't deny it when Matt and Chester ride out to his homestead to arrest him. Trouble is he's got some never ending chores to do before leaving his pregnant wife. So what's Matt to do; after all, the wife is expecting and alone on the prairie.

Episode does a good job of simulating freezing weather, even though it's probably summertime in the San Fernando Valley. At first, I thought this was a holiday entry since there's no gunplay and the mood is kind of light-hearted as we watch Matt get more exasperated helping out with one chore after another. Chester, however, doesn't mind since he's being well fed by the accommodating wife. It's a different kind of episode for the series, but in my little book, a very satisfying one with a clever ending.

Great episode.

You pretty well know it's going to be good with Jack Elam in it.

I won't give away any of it and spoil it for anybody, but I will just say you will definitely enjoy this episode.

I gave it a 9 and could have given it a 10, but I don't give out 10s very often.

Jack Elam is great as an affable farmer who reels in a gullible Matt and Chester.

They can do funny.

Warning: Spoilers
I just watched this for maybe the third time and it was almost as funny as the first. Doc's appearance at the end as the bringer of glad tidings was an excellent move and the expressions on his, Matt's, and Jack Elam's faces gave me a belly laugh. Chester's lust for food added to the humor.

Gunsmoke was created to present the dark sides of the old west; consider how often Matt must gun down a bad guy or some citizen loses a spouse, brother, sister, Mother, or Father. Many episodes end sadly but this one ended gladly. As others noted, Elam had the face of a bad man mostly, but he could make you laugh out loud, too. Good job by the whole class and a top notch script. Don't miss this one.

Wiley Jack Elam runs em ragged
banj0man31 October 2023
I won't rehash this episode as others have done a fine job. Suffice it to say that this just might be one of the most memorable Gunsmoke episodes of the 20 year run. I've seen it a number of times and it always gets a laugh out of me. Jack is perfect in his role as 'adoring husband' of a pregnant homesteading wife. Chester also is in perfect character; I love his homespun comparisons. Matt is obviously out of his bailiwick.as farmhand and laborer, although his spotless reputation remains intact. Matt is one of my childhood heroes.

It's a must see episode that only works with the well-developed characters of Matt and Chester mixing it up with Wiley Jack Elam.

LOVE IT!

In Her Condition
StrictlyConfidential2 December 2020
I guess "Where'd They Go?" was the scriptwriters' idea of creating some comedy in an episode of TV's "Gunsmoke".

But, unfortunately, this episode's predictable premise got to be pretty ridiculous within the very first 10 minutes of the story.

I couldn't believe that Marshal Dillon (who came to arrest Clint Dodie) would allow himself to be taken advantage of by the conniving Dodies in the way that he was.

Nope. In my mind this was an inferior episode of "Gunsmoke".
