Welcome to “Awesome Artist We’ve Found Around The Net.” In this column, we are focusing on one artist and the awesome art that they create, whether they be amateur, up and coming, or well established. The goal is to uncover these artists so even more people become familiar with them. We ask these artists a few questions to see their origins, influences, and more. The Avett Brothers showcased songs from their new self-titled album during a visit to CBS Mornings’ Saturday Sessions.
Fresh off releasing their first album in five years Friday, the folk act performed the three songs that comprise the middle section of the nine-track LP: “Orion’s Belt,” “Country Kid,” and “Forever Now.”
Like its predecessors — stretching from 2009’s I and Love and You to 2019’s Closer Than Together — The Avett Brothers finds the band reuniting with longtime collaborator and producer Rick Rubin, who steers the group in surprisingly happier directions...

You have to hand it to the Avett Brothers in at least a couple of regards. Long before the likes of Noah Kahan, they set the table for the sad-Americana-boy genre, unfurling heavy-hearted songs set somewhere between the mountains and the suburbs. (They became such a brand that they were featured in Gap ads.) And to their credit, they’ve never been content to merely be another sedate balladeer act: an inclination that, as heard on The Avett Brothers, their eleventh studio record, can still reward them as much as it can trip them up.

beabadoobee has announced her new album, This Is How Tomorrow Moves, set for release on August 16th via Dirty Hit. Along with the announcement, the indie star has dropped the first single, “Take a Bite.”
Arriving as the artist’s third full-length album, This Is How Tomorrow Moves sees beabadoobee teaming up with legendary record producer Rick Rubin. As such, instead of recording in beabadoobee’s bedroom, the songs were cut at Rubin’s famed Shangri-La studio in Malibu. Despite the shift in setting, the record is billed as an introspective effort, showcasing both artistic and personal growth. “I love this album,” beabadoobee said in a statement. “I feel like it’s helped me so much more than anything else has in navigating this new era, this new understanding of where I’m at. I guess it’s about becoming a woman.”

A new posthumous Johnny Cash album, Songwriter, filled with previously unreleased tunes written and performed by the Man in Black is set to arrive June 28 via Mercury Nashville/UMe.

The Avett Brothers have shared a new song titled “Country Kid,” the latest single from their upcoming self-titled album.
Featuring a classic, honky-tonk-ready country arrangement, “Country Kid” is a barn-burning romp with banjo fills, fiddle solos, and an easy rolling back beat. Lyrically, the song fondly recalls scenes of a country upbringing, from “ramshackle farms” to “throwing parties in the woods” and more. The final verse sees the “country kid” all grown up, “Talking to God a little more often/ less requests and more saying ‘thank you.’”

Fans of Marcus King might get a bit of a surprise when they throw on his new record. The South Carolina native built his success on his double-barrel growl of a voice and roiling, capacious guitar crunch, which placed him squarely in the Southern jam-band tradition. King’s last LP, 2022’s Young Blood, was a rugged set of Seventies guitar rock recorded with artisanal throwback specificity at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Studio in Nashville. On his new one, King pairs with another production titan, Rick Rubin, who helps him...

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were the two defining bands of the 1960s. Surely, any artist who split the difference between them would find an audience. A singer who saw himself as the middle ground between the two bands was big in the 1960s — but only in the 1960s.

Roman Reigns (real name: Leati Joseph Anoa’i) is a former football player and a professional wrestler currently signed to WWE, where he performs under the SmackDown brand. Roman Reigns is the current and longest-reigning WWE Universal Champion in his second reign, along with being the WWE Champion in his fourth reign.
Reigns, widely known for being the leader of The Bloodline, was initially positioned as a heroic character, with the company attempting to position him as the ‘face of the company’. It was met with some backlash, which is why when Roman Reigns returned in 2020, he returned with a villainous character portraying the Tribal Chief. This new persona was not only acknowledged but also met with acclaim. He is regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers active in the world currently, and his A&e documentary goes on to prove exactly that.

“Act of God,” the opening track of the Gossip’s first studio album in 12 years, has all the hallmarks of the trio’s music: an upbeat disco groove, gothic post-punk undertones, and, of course, Beth Ditto’s soulful voice. So does the next track. And the next. By the end of Real Power, it’s clear that, for better or worse, the album arrives as more of the same.
The 11 tracks here range from shimmery summer pop anthems to chugging disco songs, each as lively and bubbly as the last. “Turn the Card Slowly” features some novel, Hawaiian-inspired slide guitar (the album was recorded in part in producer Rick Rubin’s studio in Kauai), but it feels clunky and out of place amid what otherwise sounds like a typical Gossip song.

The Avett Brothers have announced their first new album in five years. The self-titled LP, produced by Rick Rubin, arrives on May 17th via Ramseur Records/American Recordings/Thirty Tigers. As a preview, the band has unveiled the lead single, “Love of A Girl.”
There’s a hopeful, free, careless energy to “Love of a Girl,” which capitalizes on the band’s ability to mesh their folks roots with rock elements and pop catchiness. The grounded lyrics focus on finding meaning in even the most everyday elements, like a store-bought bouquet of flowers, coffee cups, school buses, and the first introduction to heartbreak.
The forthcoming record was recorded primarily in Malibu’s Shangri-La Studios, with additional recording done in Nashville, Mar Vista, and the band’s hometown of Concord, North Carolina.

For all his rip-snorting guitar solos and his tag as a jam-band guy, Marcus King has never been a stranger to R&b. Occasionally employing horn sections and deep-pocket grooves, he’s dipped into that side of his South Carolina upbringing before — but not quite to the degree heard on his new single.
Produced by Rick Rubin, “F*ck My Life Up Again” amps up the soul element in King’s music a hundredfold. Set to a simmering groove, awash in strings and a backup choir, the song is pure retro-roadhouse soul.

One of the ghostwriter’s most valuable skills is getting their subjects to talk. So, when I gathered L.A.’s most successful ghostwriters at the Formosa Cafe to gossip, they knew all my tricks. In desperation, I went with the most transparent of all reporting techniques — buying them all fruity cocktails.
A reputation for discretion is not only how they get work, but how they avoid getting sued; they sign nondisclosure agreements for every memoir they write. But even if they revealed nothing scandalous about their famous clients — or at least nothing that couldn’t be discovered with a Google search — I learned a lot about the curious craft of ghostwriting and the types of personalities drawn to help famous people tell their life stories. Also, I learned why I am far too egotistical to do their job.

Deftones are one of the great rock bands to emerge in the 1990s. It’s hard to imagine the band going by any other name, as “Deftones” is strangely befitting of the act’s emotive, dynamic alt-metal sound.
However, at one point in the early days of the band, the young Sacramento outfit almost opted to change its name in a bid to score a record deal.
Ex-Roadrunner Records executive Monte Conner recently recounted the story in a since-deleted Facebook post [via The Prp]. It was Conner who almost signed the band and made them change their name “as a condition of the deal.”
“In the summer of 1993, I was sent a Deftones demo by their manager Dave Park,” wrote Conner. “He was based in Sacramento, where the band was from. I was instantly blown away; their music was like nothing I had ever heard before. While these days the band...

L.A.-based musician Matthew “Matthewdavid” McQueen is credited on Andre 3000’s debut solo album, New Blue Sun, as providing “mycelial electronics.” The 39-year-old founder of the record label and music collective Leaving released Mycelium Music in April, an album inspired by the interconnected networks of fungi and produced in large part using an open-source, script-based instrument called Norns, which allows users to create and manipulate sounds by breaking apart and stretching samples into grains or bits. When he got the call from New Blue Sun co-producer Carlos Niño...

Gossip are back: The Portland pop-rock trio have announced Real Power, their first album in 11 years. Ahead of its release on March 22nd, they’ve shared the lead single “Crazy Again.”
For the long-awaited follow-up to 2012’s A Joyful Noise, the members of Gossip turned to megahit producer Rick Rubin at his home studio in Kauai. Recording began in 2019, though the pandemic put halts on the project; it seems like the result was worth the wait, however, with the album described as an “11-track celebration of the galvanizing might of music, the joy of creative expression, and the power of chosen family in the aftermath of collective and personal trauma.”
“When we began, so much about Gossip was about running away — that was always in the music,” vocalist Beth Ditto explains in a press release. “We survived. We came from nothing, and we got the fuck out of there. And...

Timothee Chalamet’s second turn as guest host of Saturday Night Live gives us not one, but two recurring characters from his first stint on the show. One is a bonkers expansion of the Tiny Horse Cinematic Universe and the other is the return of the most successful hip hop artist of all time: SmokeCheddaDaAssGetta.
As every good Chalamaniac knows, Chalamet went under the moniker Li’l Timmy Tim during his high school career as a rapper. That early love of hip hop led to an SNL sketch back in 2020 with Pete Davidson where he plays a SoundCloud rapper named SmokeCheddaThaAssGetta.

Two years ago, Timothée Chalamet and Pete Davidson went viral for their Saturday Night Live sketch portraying a pair of clueless SoundCloud rappers — Smoke Chedda Tha A$$ Getta and Guap Lord, respectively — otherwise known as Xan Mob, who perform their unbearable song “Yeet” during the show “Rap Roundtable” hosted by Ego Nwodim.
And, with Davidson no longer part of the SNL cast, Chalamet’s rapper returned for a “Rap Roundtable” panel honoring the 50th anniversary of hip hop that also included Mary J. Blige (Punkie Johnson), Rick Rubin (James Austin Johnson), and Dr.

As the most followed woman on Instagram with a staggering 429 million followers, Selena Gomez has never been much concerned with social media success.
“I’ve never really cared about that stuff,” Gomez said at Universal Music Group and Thrive Global’s Music & Health Conference on Tuesday afternoon. “I suppose I’m grateful for the platform, and I would love to continue to use it for what I’m able to do, but numbers are just numbers.”
Rather, she’s well aware of the responsibility that comes with such a far-reaching platform. In her position, Gomez has heard from several fans about how her work has helped them through extremely difficult times. “It can be a little heavy,” she continued. “I feel for people, and I think that’s what kind of keeps me in check, to be honest. I think I can be a little reckless with my emotions and having conversations with young people,...

The 19 songs on Travis Scott’s comeback album Utopia weren’t enough content for him. Nearly a month after its release, the rapper has expanded the world of the album with four new music videos. The visual release, dropped all at once on YouTube, includes “Hyaena,” “Sirens,” “Modern Jam,” and “Delresto (Echoes),” which features vocal contributions from Beyoncé. All four clips have been ripped from a much larger project: the 75-minute long companion film Circus Maximus, now available in full on YouTube after a brief theatrical release and Apple Music premiere.

The rapper announced that in one week, on Aug. 7, he will bring his latest live show to Circus Maximus, an entertainment stadium and public park in Rome that used to host chariot races. Mark Ronson may have scored an Oscar for “Shallow” in A Star Is Born, but he revealed that it wasn’t Bradley Cooper’s first choice for the movie’s hit song.
In an interview with NME, published online Thursday, the Barbie music composer said he was working on Lady Gaga’s fifth studio album at the same time Cooper was in the planning process for the movie.
“We were working on Gaga’s album Joanne and Bradley Cooper stopped by the studio one afternoon. I like his films. He showed up looking like a movie star. So we hung out,” Ronson recalled. “He was really sweet, talking about this new script that they were both doing. I played him the song called ‘Joanne’ and he’s like, ‘That’s great. Can I have it?’”

Tony Bennett accepted the boundaries of his universe.
In the last few decades of his life, the period of his greatest success, he never tried to do a Rick Rubin/Johnny Cash-style album of recent pop and rock hits tweaked to suit his voice. Instead, he transported the contemporary artists he worked with — Lady Gaga especially — to his preferred musical arena: the Great American Songbook classics of Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, the Gershwins, Harold Arlen, and so many more. Without seeing the cover, you’d never even know his “MTV Unplugged” album was an “MTV Unplugged” album just by listening to it. His last studio album, “The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern,” speaks to his appreciation of the craft of songwriting embodied by the entire Great American Songbook era, and how a singer can work in dialogue with that songwriter even decades after their death to create meaning.

Trent Reznor recently revealed that he “teared up” when listening to a Dua Lipa song. Now, the Nine Inch Nails frontman has identified the song in question: her 2020 hit, “Levitating.”
The original comment was made on Rick Rubin’s podcast, Tetragrammaton, when Reznor shared that he had reassessed his opinion that pop music “sucks generally” after he heard his daughter singing along to one of Lipa’s songs. “She is so into it and it is so cool,” he explained. “It really reminded me of the art of writing a well-crafted song — I teared up listening to a Dua Lipa track, because it was just a really well-done piece of music, you know?”
When an Instagram user commented on a Sterogum post that they needed to know “which Dua Lipa song made Trent fucking Reznor tear up,” Reznor himself replied to the comment, explaining that it was “Levitating,” off Lipa’s 2020 album,...

Don’t hold your breath for a new Nine Inch Nails in the near future. Trent Reznor discussed his relationship to music in a wide-ranging new interview with Rick Rubin, revealing that these days he’s more interested in composing film scores than he is writing and touring behind traditional albums.
Surviving as a working musician typically comes down to releasing an album, supporting it on tour for two years, and then repeating the cycle, something the 58-year-old father of five isn’t exactly keen to do. “I don’t want to be away from my kids,” Reznor explained. “I don’t want to miss their lives to go do a thing that I’m grateful to be able to do, and I’m appreciative that you’re here to see it, but I’ve done it a lot, you know?”

Trent Reznor appeared as a recent guest on Rick Rubin’s podcast Tetragrammaton. Over the course of their two-hour conversation, the Nine Inch Nails mastermind spoke at length about his musical upbringing, songwriting process, and interest in film scoring.
“To me the hardest thing is the songwriting,” Reznor explained. “Having something to say, something to say with truth, that has reason to exist rather than just a thing.”
He’s even found that truth in his new-found appreciation for pop music, something he attributes to his children. “For while, I kept them in a kind of hermetically sealed way from pop music. Because I think it sucks generally — I had thought that.”
“And I heard my daughter, who’s six, singing Dua Lipa the other day,” Reznor recounted. “She is so into it and it is so cool. Like this is her music, you know, this is her thing… It...

Darby Allin is the resident daredevil of All Elite Wrestling (Aew), but the self-belief required to take such dangerous risks didn’t apply to all aspects of his career evenly. It does now.
