It’s been a largely unkind summer for movies based on the box office, but June could change that thanks to everything from big-name sequels and an ambitious western from Kevin Costner. Those choosing to stay home will have plenty to watch, too, thanks to the return of favorites like We Are Lady Parts, The Bear, House of the Dragon, and The Boys. But June also has a...

Another weekend in the books, another reason to be pessimistic about the state of the box office in 2024. We are just coming off of the worst Memorial Day weekend in decades in terms of ticket sales, thanks to weak performances by both "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie." Now? With no meaningfully big movies entering the marketplace, theaters were left to suffer -- so much so that this past weekend now ranks as literally one of the worst weekends the summer box office has experienced in a quarter century.
"The Garfield Movie" held far better than "Furiosa" in its second weekend, as the animated film topped the charts with a $14 million haul. That's good for Sony, but terrible for the industry at large. When we're in the midst of the summer moviegoing season and the number one movie on a given weekend pulls in $14 million, we're in trouble.

Update: (Monday Pm) As noted yesterday, the margin between the 2nd and 3rd place finish for If and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was slim, and in the end, after final figures were reported, their positions at the weekend box office flip-flopped. According to the latest numbers via Deadline, Furiosa made $10.785 million to If‘s $10.5. While that’s only a $285k difference, it gives Furiosa a bit of a better finish, allowing it to reclaim second place, although it trails far behind The Garfield Movie‘s first-place finish with $14 million.

The box office outlook for George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga looks pretty bleak. Monday Am: For those keeping track, Paramount’s If did not push Warner Bros.’ Furiosa into third, but the Ryan Reynolds starring, John Krasinski written/produced/directed title did put up a great hold in weekend 3 with -35%. Finals this Am for the top three pics are Sony’s The Garfield Movie at $14M, -42%; Warner Bros’ Furiosa at $10.785M, -59%; and Paramount’s If at $10.5M.

The third iteration of the Tom Holland-led trilogy climbed up box office ranks swiftly while also bringing the multiverse into full force. Moreover, the implications of the storyline directly tied into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it gave rise to speculations regarding Avengers: Secret Wars.

The French box office bounced back in May after an April plunge to reach 15.6 million admissions, up 13.5% from the same month last year.
Ticket sales year on year from January through May are down by 11.6% compared to the same period in 2023 after a slow start to the year and admissions to French cinemas falling by 35.5% in what was an abysmal April.
However, the June-May total of 171 million admissions is equal to the same period year on year. More was merrier for a month when 74 new films were released compared to 63 in 2023.

So, we're ready for it."The directors have returned to the franchise after making the 2020 film 'Bad Boys for Life' and the pair explained that getting behind the camera again on the series wasn't always the plan. They told Extra.ie: "Well, when we did 'Bad Boys: For Life', there was no plan (to return), because otherwise ('Bad Boys 4') would have been called 'Bad Boys: For Life'.

Lots of ways to describe how bad it is for theaters. Here’s one: A year ago, the #2 film “The Little Mermaid” grossed $41.4 million; this weekend, the top four films grossed $44.4 million combined.
“The Garfield Movie” (Sony) took over #1 with $14 million and a 10-day total about $2 million better than last week’s #1, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” (Warner Bros.). George Miller’s $160 million-budget prequel dropped 59 percent from a disappointing start and is in a tight battle for #2 with “If” (Paramount). The family fantasy with Ryan Reynolds tentatively stands at $50,000 ahead; to its credit, WB wasn’t aggressive in its estimate. (Tomorrow will tell the actual result).
The good news is we have touched bottom for the summer and it will get better from here. Both “Garfield” and “If” had strong holds: “Garfield” dropped 41 percent in its second weekend after a holiday Sunday and “If” dropped 33 percent and now is at...

Martin Lawrence has been a recognized face in Hollywood for decades now. He starred in many beloved projects, however, none have been as iconic as the Bad Boys film series. Where many thought that 2020’s Bad Boys for Life would be the end of the series, Lawrence and his co-star, Will Smith, brought about a gift for their fans.

When Warner Bros. Discovery dropped an anvil on Coyote vs. Acme, it was like Batgirl all over again — except it might have been an even bigger blow. While it’s up for serious questioning as to whether or not Batgirl was truly “unreleasable”, Coyote vs. Acme was by most accounts looking to be a pretty darn good movie. Now, the directors of Batgirl are showing their support for a fellow Wbd movie that was left hovering over a cliff’s edge.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the directors behind Batgirl, showed their concern over how studios are willing to openly discard films, particularly name-checking the director of Coyote vs. Acme. “It’s an extra thing to worry about in Hollywood, and that’s sad. (Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"2020 at the box office will be known as the 'year of the asterisk,' with virtually every known measure and metric for box office performance being completely rethought and recalibrated." These were the words of Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian speaking to CNN in October 2020. At that time, the industry was contending with a months-long, global shutdown, with movie theaters on life support as the pandemic raged on. Yes, every title released in 2020 will always come with an asterisk but even with that, one movie had to come out on top during Hollywood's lost year. That movie was "Bad Boys for Life."

Venom star Tom Hardy confirmed that the third movie would mark Eddie Brock's "last ride" in a social media post shortly after production began, and we found out back in March that this sentiment (if not the exact wording) had carried over to the official title: Venom: The Last Dance.
Despite mostly negative reviews, the first two movies did very well at the box office, and while many fans feel the title character deserves better, others view the mostly light-hearted comic book adventures as a bit of throwaway fun and are looking forward to a first look at some footage from the threequel.
Following Friday's news that the first trailer has been classified and will most likely screen head of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, we have a more exact update on when the teaser is expected to debut online.

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' hunt for a Spider-Man 4 director continues, with Bad Boys: Ride or Die helmers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah now rumoured to be in the running for the job.
They previously worked with Marvel Studios on Ms. Marvel after directing the premiere and finale of the critically acclaimed Disney+ series. They then made the leap to the Dceu to direct Batgirl, only for the near-completed movie to be scrapped as a tax write-off by Warner Bros. Discovery.
Talking to ComicBook.com, El Arbi and Fallah addressed the Spider-Man 4 rumours head-on.
"It came out of nowhere, because we've got the Sony bosses here, and they didn't tell us anything!" El Arbi joked before Fallah chimed in to say, "I'm a superfan of Spider-Man, so you can imagine, when I was reading that, I was like, 'Whoa - that would be cool.'"

With just five months to go until the release of Venom: The Last Dance, we surprisingly know very little about the movie, but that’s all set to change as there have been rumblings that the first trailer will debut next week.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence showed up to the Bad Boys: Ride or Die premiere in Hollywood on Thursday ready to put on a show.
Arriving on top of a double-decker bus, Smith quickly took on the role of hype man, yelling into a microphone, “When I say, ‘bad,’ you say ‘boys'” to the crowd gathered on Hollywood Boulevard. He and Lawrence, reuniting for their fourth Bad Boys film, soaked up the fan love for the franchise and told The Hollywood Reporter that after nearly 30 years of playing these characters, they’re not quite ready to hang it up.
Although many long-running franchises have been rebooted with younger casts or passed the baton on to the next generation, Smith insisted, “We might have one more in us before we hand it off but we’ve got a lot of young seeds in there.” Added Lawrence, “The back ain’t went out quite yet,...

That’s what Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra had to say about his studio’s talks with Paramount Global for a potential merger. His comments tonight at the Hollywood premiere for Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die come on a day when Skydance has reportedly sweetened its deal for the Shari Redstone-run conglom. Aside from that, Vinciquerra couldn’t disclose any more updates because, alas, he’s under an NDA which Sony signed two weeks ago. Last weekend saw one of the closest box office battles of the summer, with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga only narrowly inching out a victory over The Garfield Movie (by less than a million bucks). With very little in the way of competition this weekend, the orange, animated feline is set to overtake Miller’s post-apocalyptic actioner, thanks mainly to weekend family matinees.
Given how mediocre Furiosa’s box office start was (with many predicting it killed the chance of us ever getting Mad Max: The Wasteland), all eyes will be on the film’s hold this weekend. Given the reviews and word of mouth, I predict a 40% decline, which would put it in the $16-17 million range. To note, during its run, Mad Max: Fury Road never posted a drop over 50% until late in its run. Hopefully, word of mouth means the film will have a decent enough finish at the box office,...

As a very bad summer movie season at the box office drones on, it looks like Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are going to do their very best to save the day. Sony's "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" hits theaters next weekend and will look to reignite the box office after a particularly quiet, post-Memorial Day weekend. While Will Smith is no longer the surefire bet he once was in the '90s and early 2000s, in the early going, it looks like this one will be a winner for the A-lister and his co-star Martin Lawrence.
Directed once again by "Bad Boys for Life" duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the upcoming fourth entry in the "Bad Boys" franchise is going to easily top the charts on its opening weekend with a debut in the $48 to $58 million range, per Box Office Theory. Two years after that slap at the Oscars made him persona non grata, the Fresh Prince is making a fresh start with a return to Bad Boys. His rehabilitation seems assured – so long as his films don’t flop
In one of those dumb ironies that can abound in Hollywood, the first Will Smith movie to be greenlit since the slap in March 2022 hinges on an innocent man trying to clear his name. Previous iterations of the odd-couple, cop buddy movie Bad Boys, starring Smith and Martin Lawrence as two foul-mouthed Miami cops quibbling as they tear through traffic, have centred on missing drug busts, money laundering and Klansmen.
In the latest instalment of the franchise, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, released next week, a criminal cabal frames the errant duo, turning them into fugitives from their own police department. Because nothing signals your earnest desire to give public restitution...

Columbia Pictures’ action-comedy movie “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is set to play in cinemas in mainland China from June 22, it was announced on Thursday.
Starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, the film is the fourth in the nearly 30-year-old Bad Boys franchise. It sees the titular Miami cops investigate corruption in the police force after their late boss is accused of colluding with a foreign mafia. But the tables are turned and the pair have to go on the run while still trying to solve the case.
The film releases in a multitude of international territories from June 5 and in North America from June 7. The China date, only two weeks later, is in keeping with recent trends that give Hollywood titles near-synchronized outings in the Middle Kingdom and a modicum of marketing runway.

Columbia Pictures’ Bad Boys: Ride or Die has been cleared for a theatrical release in China, landing in cinemas there on June 22.
This is the second Bad Boys movie after Bad Boys for Life to play mainland China. Filmmakers Adil and Bilall return after that threequel with this fourthquel.
Bad Boys for Life had a China in August 2020 in the throes of Covid grossing only $3.2M. However, other Smith movies fared pretty darn well over there pre-Covid, i.e. 2012’s Men in Black 3 did $77.2M unadjusted for inflation and 2019’s Aladdin did $53.4M in the Middle Kingdom. Bad Boys for Life opened to $62.5M ($73M 4-day) stateside over MLK weekend 2020 before anyone knew a pandemic would shut down the business entirely for a year. The threequel went on to make $206.3M domestic, $426.5M WW.

Sony Pictures Entertainment’s senior management says it remains “optimistic” about the future of cinema, despite a slow start to the North American summer season and industry talk of franchise fatigue.
Speaking on a Sony Group Corporation conference call, Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra blamed current box office torpor on three prongs of disruption that have affected movie production over the past five years: competition with streaming; the disruptions and cost increases brought on by the Covid-era; and last year’s writers and actors strikes. Together these have led to fewer films reaching theaters.
“What really is happening is that people got out of the habit of going into theaters. As the marketplace begins to recover in terms of having big films, you’ll see people start to go to theaters again,” said Vinciquerra. “The second half of this year, you’re going to see quite a resurgence. One...

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die has received clearance to roll into China. The Sony Pictures film will hit Chinese cinemas on June 22, according to both the studio and local press reports in Beijing. The film opens theatrically in North America on June 7.
The new film is the fourth installment in the long-running Bad Boys franchise, following Bad Boys for Life (2020), which revived the movie series after a 17-year hiatus and was a worldwide hit with $426 million in total ticket revenue. Bad Boys for Life earned just $3 million in China, but it was released there amid the challenges of the pandemic.
Bad Boys 4 is helmed by Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the Belgian duo who infamously had their $90 million Batgirl feature for Max shelved for a tax break by Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022.

It’s not always easy to find out which movies hit theaters each week, especially after the Hollywood strikes led to many release date changes. With the WGA and actors strikes resolved and summer blockbusters starting to roll in, May and June are filled with both big budget flicks and new indie releases.
Premiering May 31 is IFC’s “In a Violent Nature,” which follows a vengeful spirit’s bloody journey through the woods to retrieve his 60-year-old corpse starring Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love and Reece Presley. Also hitting theaters is “Summer Camp,” a comedy about three childhood friends who attempt to recapture their memories spent together at summer camp starring Kathy Bates, Diane Keaton, Alfre Woodard and Beverly D’Angelo. Two films getting limited releases this week are Disney’s “Young Woman and the Sea,” a biopic about Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel starring Daisy Ridley,...

More than two months after it first hit theaters, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" has crossed a fairly significant box office milestone. The film has been an afterthought for several weeks (all due respect), as several big, new movies such as "Challengers," "The Fall Guy," "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," and "Furiosa," among others, have entered the marketplace. Be that as it may, Sony's latest entry in the long-running franchise had just enough gas left in the tank to pass the $200 million mark globally.
For its 10th weekend in theaters, "Frozen Empire" pulled in $355,000 domestically, coming in at number 14 on the box office charts. The film had to shed 591 screens as "Furiosa" and "The Garfield Movie" opened to a hugely disappointing $26.3 million and $24 million, respectively. Naturally, that gobbled up the lion's share of the attention. But with that little bit of extra money, the new "Ghostbusters" has amassed $112.7 million...

So you might have heard: despite being a fantastic spectacle and exactly what you want out of a summer post-apocalyptic race into the Wasteland, Furiosa had a rough opening weekend. Like worst opening weekend for a Memorial Day chart-topper since 1984 “rough.” And a mere four days after this stumble began, the debate’s already arisen on whether this was a one-off disappointment due to being a recast prequel movie, or if it’s a sign of larger systemic issues in the industry.
Either way, it’s part of a May which has sent a chill down studios’ spines. Generally considered the launchpad for the summer movie season, May is the month that for 20 years has usually begun with superhero movies and big returns. Instead the biggest success so far has been Disney/20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which as of press time is on the verge of crossing $300 million globally.

The Bad Boys are back, baby! There have been some early screenings of Bad Boys: Ride or Die in the past weeks, and the first reactions on social media are quite positive. Our own Chris Bumbray caught a screening last week and was a big fan, saying the sequel was just as much fun as the last movie.

‘Spider-Man 4’ is one of MCU’s most anticipated projects in the works. Tom Holland confirmed he’s returning as Peter Parker, alongside Zendaya as Mj. Besides these details, much about the movie remains unknown.
Earlier reports suggested it would explore the street-level stories in the MCU, but recent reports indicate otherwise.
Various directors have been linked to helming the movie, including Jon Watts, who withdrew due to other commitments, Sam Raimi, Justin Lin, Drew Goddard, and others.
Among the rumored names were Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi, the directors of the canceled Dceu ‘Batgirl’ movie. In a recent interview with Arabic Mdc, Fallah was asked about the rumors. He politely responded, “I can’t discuss that.”

‘Spider-Man 4’ is one of the most exciting projects that MCU currently has in development. The movie has been in development for quite some time now, Tom Holland confirmed a while ago that he is reprising his role as Peter Parker along with Zendaya who will be back as Mj.
Aside from that, there’s little we know about the movie. Some reports stated that ‘Spider-Man 4’ will focus more on the street-level stories within the MCU, and now the latest reports state something else entirely.
Several names have been mentioned in the context of directing the movie starting with Jon Watts, who eventually pulled out due to involvement with other projects, Sam Raimi, Justin Lin, Drew Goddard, and several others.

The well-oiled hit content-producing machine famed as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has of late seen a slew of hits and misses at the box office. Following Avengers: Endgame, the expectations from the Kevin Feige-led studio have reached sky-high. However, it has yet to meet those and churn out a live-action project for the big screens of that scale and hype.

Notably, the only major exclusion from this would be Spider-Man: No Way Home, which not only marked a solemn end to the first trilogy of Tom Holland films, but also gave Marvel Studios its biggest cash stash since the 2019 mega-movie. Looking to continue this streak, along with Sony, the studio is eagerly looking to push out a fourth film and rumors hold that it has settled on the director duo of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to...

Rumours about who will direct Spider-Man 4 continue to swirl, with Ms. Marvel and Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah among those supposedly in the mix.
Jon Watts helmed Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home but appears ready to move on from the web-slinger. Despite also leaving The Fantastic Four, Kevin Feige is said to be keen on Watts returning to the MCU for another project.
Appearing at a recent screening event for Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Fallah was asked to speak on the Spider-Man 4 rumours and his reaction (refusing to answer the question while saying "I can't talk about that...") may be telling.
While we're not suggesting this has confirmed his and El Arbi's involvement with the movie, it seems highly likely the duo are likely contenders.
