Will Smith became embroiled in a controversy after he slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars ceremony in 2022. After Rock joked about Jada Pinkett-Smith, the Bad Boys star went up the stage to give him a slap and then exclaimed profanities. The incident resulted in Smith resigning from the Academy and being banned from the ceremony.
The two have addressed the incident on multiple occasions and Smith reportedly even apologized to Rock publicly. While the two may now have a history of disagreement, they may agree on one opinion. Smith recently agreed with Martin Lawrence on Richard Pryor being one of the best stand-up comics of all time, which Rock too has expressed on multiple occasions.

In the world of basketball, the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James and former professional basketball player Michael Jordan are easily considered two of the biggest names to have ever played for the National Basketball Association.
However, Hollywood actor Will Smith seems to have a different final name on his list of Goat NBA players.

Although he holds both James and Jordon in high regard for how tremendously these two professionals contributed and continue to contribute to the sport, Smith actually tends to differ in his respective opinion on who the Greatest Of All Time basketball player is.
And his response is one that might displease both James and Jordan’s die-hard fans.
LeBron James and Michael Jordan Aren’t the GOATs in Will Smith’s Eyes

In 2023, IMDb teamed up with data analytics platform Tableau to empower movie fans and data lovers to create and share free data visualizations using IMDb’s movie data. So far, Tableau users have created more than 600 data visualizations using IMDb user ratings, genres, Academy Award wins, and more to create deep dives on topics like Disney movies, the films of Jim Carrey, horror movies, and many others. Now, IMDb is thrilled to share that hard work by highlighting some of the visualizations that capture our shared enthusiasm for data.
See details of the partnership here.
“Our new collaboration with Tableau will empower entertainment fans and professionals to surface and share insights from the IMDb database in visually compelling ways,” said Nikki Santoro, Chief Operating Officer, IMDb. “This is an exciting, unique opportunity for users to showcase their love of film for a global audience by creating new and distinctive data visualizations that will entertain and inform movie fans.”
In honor of the recent box office success of ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’—the fourth film in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence action franchise—we’re looking at Tableau user Vincent Ng’s “When Data Meets Action.” In the chart, Ng reviews action films from the past 30 years to look at the number of action movies made per year, their average IMDb ratings, and even their average run time.
Comparing ‘Ride or Die’ with Ng’s analysis, the fourth film in the Bad Boys franchise clocks in at 115 minutes, making it 11.5 minutes longer than the average action films’ 103.5. In terms of ratings, the action genre scores pretty low on average at 5.7 on the IMDb ratings scale. ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ mostly pleased IMDb users, with a rating of 7.0. Maybe it was those additional 11.5 minutes that made the difference.

Pixar has made some of the most beloved and narratively fulfilling animated films for many years. The company is behind some of the biggest hits including the Toy Story franchise, A Bug’s Life, Monster’s Inc, and Inside Out. However, the past few years have not been great for the company with Elemental and Lightyear becoming box office disappointments.

Rob Schneider has unleashed a scathing rant slamming Will Smith as an “a**hole,” “liar,” and a “fraud” whose “nice guy” persona is completely fabricated. The former Saturday Night Live star appeared on the Australian breakfast radio show The Kyle & Jackie O Show on Tuesday (June 11), where he revealed he previously couldn’t share his true feelings on Smith and the infamous Oscars slap incident because he was an “elected official” for SAG-AFTRA. However, Schneider said he can now speak freely and claimed the night the Bad Boys: Ride or Die star slapped Chris Rock showed his true colors. “Will Smith is a t**t,” Schneider said, adding, “[He] was hiding the fact of who he really is, and it was exposed that night. And he’s really an a**hole.” “It’s a deep, dark thing to do that in front of all those people to a really great, legendary comedian,...

Whenever a Sony movie comes in at No. 1, Tom Rothman drives his 1967 Ford Mustang to the Culver City lot and leaves it parked in front of the Thalberg building. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) had an exceptional first Monday gross of $6,250,000. That result, combined with multiple positive other elements, suggests that it will ultimately be the biggest domestic grosser among early summer (May through two weeks of June) openers.
Currently, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) leads among an overall disappointing set of releases with $150 million ($5.4 million last weekend). That projects to around a $170 million ultimate domestic result.
“Ride or Die” opened with $56.5 million, $1.9 million less than “Apes.” But with Monday’s total it is now less than $200,000 behind, and should be easily ahead of it for the full week.
Predicting that “Bad Boys” exceeds $170 million, perhaps getting closer to $200 million, is based on several factors playing in its favor. Let’s start with the trajectory of its results so far.
Recently unreliable tracking estimated a $45 million-$50 million opening. After Thursday’s previews, industry consensus was $53 million.

After the overperformance of Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die, summer’s big wheels keep on turnin’ as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is looking at what could be the biggest stateside opening of the year to date with $85M, and another $50M abroad for a $135M global launch.
Legendary/Warner Bros’ Dune: Part Two owns the biggest domestic opening of 2024 so far with $82.5M, while both studios’ Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire counts the year’s largest global launch for a Hollywood movie at $194M.
Inside Out 2 also will rep the biggest post-Covid opening for a Disney animated movie, with many of its films lacking the wattage of pre-pandemic times. Disney/Pixar’s Lightyear became its best post-Covid domestic opening at $50M — and that was considered to be a total misfire for the Toy Story franchise.

“Inside Out 2” should evoke an emotion that Pixar hasn’t felt about the box office in years: Joy.
The follow-up film to 2015’s cerebral hit “Inside Out” is estimated to score a stellar $80 million to $90 million in its box office debut. If projections hold, it’ll overtake “Dune: Part Two” ($82.5 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million) as the biggest opening of the year.
As this weekend’s only new nationwide release, it’ll have no trouble taking the box office crown from the prior champion, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.” The fourth installment in Sony’s buddy-cop comedy, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, launched over the weekend with $56.5 million and should add roughly $28 million in its sophomore outing.

Hits from the weekend
Streaming movies and shows made up the majority of the top five titles this past weekend, based on traffic to their IMDb pages. That’s thanks to a trio of Netflix titles and the new Star Wars series, “The Acolyte.” In theaters, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s fourth installment in the Bad Boys franchise delivered Hollywood a much-needed box office win, while ‘The Watchers’—the mystery-horror film starring Dakota Fanning—drew enough interest to land in the top 10.
By the time ‘Hit Man’ dropped on Netflix, movie fans were probably well aware of who Glen Powell was, but the popularity of the comedic action film brought more IMDb users’ attention to co-star Adria Arjona and director Richard Linklater. If Arjona looked familiar to viewers, it’s likely from several supporting roles in other streaming hits like “Good Omens,” “Andor,” and ‘6 Underground’ with Ryan Reynolds.
It’s not often that directors crack the top five (or even top 10) names on IMDb, but viewers were clearly interested to know more about Richard Linklater, the versatile and irreverent director of indie films like ‘Slacker’ and ‘Dazed and Confused,’ who also found mainstream recognition with ‘School of Rock.’
Also big on Netflix were the French killer shark movie ‘Under Paris’ and the Benedict Cumberbatch miniseries “Eric,” which released all six episodes two weeks ago. Elsewhere in streaming, “The Acolyte” has had no trouble finding its audience on Disney+. According to Disney, the show drew 4.8 million viewers on its first day, making it the streamer’s biggest hit of 2024 to date. Amandla Stenberg and Dafne Keen were in the top five names on IMDb, and both will likely remain popular through the show’s first season, which ends on July 16.
What’s in store for the coming week?
Expect next weekend to be all about “The Boys,” the raunchy comic book adaptation from showrunner Eric Kripke. The first three episodes of Season 4 arrive Thursday (6/13) on Prime Video, with new episodes dropping weekly. Returning cast members Karl Urban, Antony Starr, and Erin Moriarty will likely climb IMDb’s STARmeter, but a few new supes on the scene could put some breakouts in the spotlight, such as Valorie Curry (playing Firecracker) or Susan Heyward (as Sister Sage).
In theaters, Disney and Pixar’s animated ‘Inside Out 2’ is a shoo-in to win next weekend’s box office, though it may not have the same interest on IMDb as the streaming releases. The original voice cast of emotions are returning, but it’s more likely one of the newcomers will spike in popularity, like Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as Anxiety, Ayo Edibiri (“The Bear”) as Envy, or Paul Walter Houser (‘I, Tonya,’ ‘Richard Jewell’) as Embarrassment.

Rhea Seehorn was initially devastated when she learned one particular scene from the season finale of Better Call Saul was cut off. Later on, the actress realized it was for the clarity of the narrative.

Seehorn recently appeared in Will Smith’s Bad Boys 4, but before that, she was known for her outstanding portrayal of Kim Wexler in the Breaking Bad spinoff. Series co-creator Peter Gould provided an explanation as to why he had to remove that important ending scene.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is living up to the premise, “Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?” The “they” in this scenario are the U.S. Marshals, led by Judy Howard, who is played by Rhea Seehorn. The fourth film in the action-comedy series is currently enjoying a round of success as it becomes one of the bigger hits of the summer in a year where most large releases are failing to live up to expectations. While the Bad Boys series is usually a show for the duo of Martin Lawrence and Will Smith, this new installment splits the focus on some of the supporting characters — one being Captain Howard’s daughter.
Seehorn is not only riding high by being in one of the summer’s hits, but she also re-teams with Better Call Saul‘s Vince Gilligan for a new untitled AppleTV+ show. The Hollywood Reporter caught...

Bad Boys: Ride or Die has taken the box office by storm, performing exceptionally well despite initial skepticism. The movie secured a stunning Saturday gross of $19.5 million, showing only a 10% drop from its preview and first-day earnings of $21.6 million. This achievement marks Will Smith‘s sixth-highest opening in the U.S./Canada and his 18th number-one debut as a leading man. For Martin Lawrence, this is his eighth number-one domestic opening. Collectively, the film grossed $56 million for its opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing R-rated opening since Oppenheimer last July. Globally, Bad Boys 4 raked in an impressive $104.6...

The fourth installment of the ‘Bad Boys’ franchise, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, hit theaters with much anticipation. Yet, while the film tries to maintain pace with its predecessors, its formula becomes all too familiar. No Surprises The film begins with detectives Mike (Will Smith) and Marcus (Martin Lawrence) on a high-stakes mission. Despite the high-energy action scenes and signature humor delivered by the duo, it felt like a repeating pattern rather than a refreshing addition to the franchise. Dennis McDonald Shares How Reggie’s Heroic Scene in Bad Boys: Ride or Die Was a Last-Minute Addition
Bad Boys: Ride or Die star Dennis McDonald has recently opened up about a surprising twist – his character’s pivotal scene wasn’t part of the original script. Dennis McDonald’s Unplanned Moment McDonald, who reprises his role as Reggie from Bad Boys II, unfolded an unexpected yet significant presence in the film. Interestingly, the big final scene showcasing Reggie’s heroics came as a last-minute addition. Reggie’s character has evolved significantly since his earlier appearance when he faced Mike (Will Smith) and Marcus (Martin Lawrence) for taking Marcus’ daughter on a date. This evolution now sees him saving his in-laws from grave...

Another weekend in the books, another disappointing opening for a much-anticipated horror movie. Warner Bros. released Ishana Night Shyamalan's "The Watchers" in theaters this past weekend, and given that the daughter of "The Sixth Sense" director M. Night Shyamalan was getting into the family business, there was excitement around this one. Unfortunately, the end result left much to be desired in the early going, both critically and commercially.
"The Watchers" opened to an estimated $7 million in its debut domestically. It opened against "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," which easily won the weekend with an impressive $56.5 million opening. Unfortunately, even though this seemed like an example of solid counterprogramming, Shyamalan's mysterious horror flick landed at number four on the charts, also placing behind "The Garfield Movie" ($10 million) and "If" ($8 million). Those movies were in their third and fourth weekends, respectively. Needless to say, this isn't what WB had in mind.

Kim Wexler continues to pay dividends for Rhea Seehorn. When Bad Boys: Ride or Die directors Adil and Bilall endured an “emotional rollercoaster” in 2022, they found an escape through their binge-watch of Seehorn’s acclaimed series, Better Call Saul. The two Belgian directors became so taken with her performance as Jimmy McGill’s (Bob Odenkirk) romantic partner in crime that they told themselves that they’d find a role for her to play someday. Well, someday came soon, as they then had a general meeting with her regarding Bad Boys: Ride or Die and the role of U.S. Marshal Judy Howard, the daughter of Joe Pantoliano’s beloved Bad Boys character, Captain Conrad Howard.
“Believe me, there was a part of me that was like, ‘Do they know me from anything?’ But I pretty much assume that of anybody; it wasn’t really specific to them. So I think...

When the summer was in need of saving, Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett came to the rescue. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited on screen over the weekend in "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," the fourth installment of the long-running franchise, serving as a sequel to 2020's "Bad Boys for Life." Much has happened in the four years since that movie came out but one important thing hasn't changed: people really love these characters. As such, the new movie easily topped the box office with an impressive global debut.
"Ride or Die" opened to $56.5 million domestically, which was above weekend estimates. It was a little below the $62.5 million that "Bad Boys for Life" opened to in 2020 but that movie also opened in January when there is generally far less competition. After emerging from bankruptcy in the U.S. last summer, Regal parent Cineworld is exploring options for its UK business that could include a potential sale or restructuring, Sky News reported over the weekend.
According to the report, the world’s second largest cinema operator has enlisted AlixPartners, which helped its lenders navigate bankruptcy, as consultant and contacted prospective bidders in recent days. City sources told Sky News that the sale process was expected to run for several weeks.
Cineworld is also expected to explore the option of a company voluntary arrangement — a further step in its restructuring process — which could put an unspecified number of its UK cinemas at risk of closure.
A spokesperson for Cineworld provided the following statement to Deadline: “Like many businesses, we are continually reviewing our UK operations.”
Cineworld filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. in 2022, flattened by Covid and debt. It exited last August.

Hollywood is a constant churning mill of content with competitiveness rooted at its core. A striking example of this is the current summer box office that has witnessed a tide of resurgence following the release of the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence starrer Bad Boys: Ride or Die. The fourth installment in the franchise holds immense importance, at least for the former entertainment stalwart, who is marking his biggest return to the big screens after the 2022 Oscars debacle.

‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ Delivers a Welcome $56 Millon Haul; ‘The Watchers’ Stumbles in First Weekend
The domestic box office finally changed course after a slow start to the summer release season, as ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ won the weekend with a successful $56 million opening. This is the best R-rated opening in theaters since last year's 'Oppenheimer.' It’s also Will Smith’s sixth-highest domestic opening and the first notable major summer title that over-performed against tracking numbers.
The fourth film in Smith and Martin Lawrence's action franchise was projected to do well, but Hollywood had reasons to temper that optimism. For starters, this was Smith’s first major release after the infamous Oscars slap in 2022, and it wasn’t clear if the fallout would have a lasting impact on his box office marketability. And while the previous installment, ‘Bad Boys for Life,’ was the biggest hit of 2020 with $427 million worldwide, it was also the last hit of 2020 when the global pandemic brought the industry to a screeching halt.
The thriller ‘The Watchers,’ the directorial debut of Ishana Shyamalan, opened in fourth place to just $7 million, a disappointing debut for a genre film supported by a bankable star in Dakota Fanning and a first-time director with built-in name recognition as the daughter of supernatural hit-maker M. Night Shyamalan.
Chris Pratt’s animated comedy ‘The Garfield Movie’ held in second place in its third week, earning $10 million for a $192 million worldwide total, while another family film—John Krasinski's animated/live-action film ‘IF’—also held its appeal with $8 million in its fourth weekend for a $160 million total worldwide.
It was another rough weekend for ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,’ as it dropped to sixth place behind ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.’ The 'Mad Max: Fury Road' prequel took in a $4.25 million, a 60% drop from last week, while 'Apes' continued to draw audiences with $5.4 million.
In the top 10 were also re-releases of two The Lord of the Rings movies, ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ ($2.44 million) and ‘The Two Towers’ ($1.91 million), which played on 1,529 screens each, capitalizing on audience nostalgia.
Next weekend, all eyes turn to Disney and Pixar to deliver with the release of animated sequel ‘Inside Out 2.’ Hollywood could use another bright spot this summer, and there isn’t another big hit expected until July, with the release of ‘Despicable Me 4’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

Exclusive: Eric Dane (Euphoria) has been tapped to star opposite Jensen Ackles and Jessica Camacho in Countdown, Prime Video’s thriller drama series from One Chicago veteran Derek Haas.
His casting shouldn’t be alarming news for Euphoria fans. According to sources, there have been some promising signs as work on Season 3 scripts continues with creator Sam Levinson. Amid a production delay, HBO in March allowed the cast to take other acting jobs.
Should the network proceed with a third season — which I hear is still targeting a start of production later this year for a 2025 debut — filming will have to be done around the schedule of cast members like Dane who have booked new gigs. That is considered challenging but doable. Since March, Dane also signed up for pan-European miniseries Kabul, which is currently in production.

It was, once again, a Big Willie Weekend.
But for some moviegoers, it involved an act of live theater.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” was a massive hit for Sony, and beat all box office projections with a $56 million domestic haul plus an additional $48 million internationally. There were a lot of fingers crossed on this one, considering both the directors and central star had to overcome some setbacks.
For the Belgian helmers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, it was their first at-bat since David Zaslav had “Batgirl” ash-canned. For Will Smith, it was his first mainstream movie since he lost his cool at the 94th Academy Awards and whapped Chris Rock across the face and barked profanities at him following a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair. Smith’s next picture “Emancipation” for Apple TV+ was already in the can, but “Bad Boys” was the test to see...

Good news for those Bad Boys: audiences are still ride or die for the exploits of Mike and Marcus. That’s reflected in the opening weekend box office figures for the buddy-action franchise’s fourth instalment, Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, which saw Will Smith and Martin Lawrence draw in an impressive haul – earning over $100 million worldwide. In a stuttering summer, with major movies like Furiosa and The Fall Guy underperforming, that’s a significant success; particularly considering Bad Boys doesn’t sit on the CGI-heavy mega-spectacle end of the blockbuster spectrum.
Bad Boys: Ride Or Die earned $56 million at the US box office, and added $48 million from across the rest of the world, all adding up to an opening weekend of $104 million. That’s significantly higher than the opening haul for The Fall Guy (around $65 million), and Furiosa (roughly $59 million). The film is directed by Adil & Bilall – who...

Cinema operator Cineworld is reportedly working with advisors on a strategic review that could lead to the disposal of its UK operations.
Sky News reported over the weekend that Cineworld has begun contacting prospective bidders. It said that AlixPartners, the restructuring adviser which handled the administration of Cineworld’s London-listed holding company last year, has been drafted in to work on the process.
Citing City sources, Sky News said that the cinema giant is also expected to explore the option of a company voluntary arrangement (Cva) – a further restructuring process which could put an unspecified number of its UK cinemas at risk of closure.

Warner Bros.’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and A24’s Civil War have both gotten off to a slow start at China’s box office. Furiosa, the first movie of George Miller’s Mad Max saga to be released theatrically in China, opened in sixth place with $3.7 million over the country’s Dragon Boat Festival holiday weekend as a batch of local releases dominated ticket sales. Alex Garland’s Civil War, meanwhile, debuted to just $2.4 million for eighth place, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway.
Civil War, made for about $50 million, was already an international hit with $69 million in total ticket revenue in North America and $114 million worldwide. But Miller’s Furiosa certainly could have used a bigger boost from China, as its $144 million total at the global box offices still lags behind its hefty $168 million production budget. Chinese ticketing app Maoyan forecasts Furiosa to finish its run with...

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” a hit in multiple other markets worldwide, crashed on its first lap at the South Korean box office. It failed to make even $1 million in on its opening weekend.
Instead, “Wonderland,” a sci-fi fantasy about Artificial Intelligence, took the top spot over the weekend.
Opening in fifth place, “Bad Boys 4” earned just $520,000 or 8% of the Korean market over the Friday to Sunday weekend, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Over the five days since its Wednesday theatrical opening, it earned just $803,000.
At this pace, it is unlikely to catch the $3.54 million Korean total of “Bad Boys for Life,” which opened in January 2020.
Competition over the latest weekend was not exactly fierce. Korean-produced “Wonderland” earned a modest $1.66 million in top spot, with a market share of 25%. That was the second weakest first-placed opening of the year.

Yet again, a new title has claimed the top spot of the box-office weekend as Bad Boys: Ride or Die debuted a whopping $46 million ahead of its nearest competition.
In its first weekend of release, Bad Boys: Ride or Die brought in $56.0 million for Sony Pictures Releasing, easily capturing the number one spot of the box-office weekend top ten. This was enough to relegate last weekend’s top film, The Garfield Movie, to a distant second place where it made $10.0 million for Sony Pictures Releasing, lifting its two-week total to $68.6 million. Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures saw If drop to third place where it took in $8.0 million over the weekend, giving the film a four-week total of $93.5 million. The second debut of the weekend, Warner Bros.’ The Watchers, landed in fourth place where it grossed $7.0 million for the studio. Falling a spot to finish in fifth this weekend was Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes...
