Today, Netflix released viewership data for the second half of 2023. The numbers shine a light on what worked, what flopped, and how Netflix may move forward in the future.
Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com ‘One Piece’ to Rule Them All
The most-watched show on Netflix in the second half of 2023 was “One Piece.” The live-action remake of an anime classic racked up an incredible 71.6 million views and over 541 million hours. The easy conclusion is that Netflix should greenlight more live-action remakes of anime shows, right? Well, maybe not.
One of Netflix’s most high-profile flops was the live-action “Cowboy Bebop,” which hit the platform in November 2021. Although it hit the Netflix Top 10 list for three weeks, the show declined 59% in viewing hours from its second week to its third. Netflix canceled the show less than a month after its debut.
Netflix’s remake of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” was a hit this year.

As a Virgo, I’m all about order. As a kid, I created my own card catalog for my collection of books, as if I were a library. I still alphabetize and catalog all of my music on Discogs. Even my Emmy notes are neatly organized by year, going all the way back to 1996.
That’s why I wasn’t happy in the late 1990s when hourlong shows like “Ally McBeal” and “Desperate Housewives” entered the Emmy comedy race. Hourlong dramedies are not comedies! No one ever called “All in the Family” — which had some deep, dark moments — a drama, and yet there were a couple of laughs in “Desperate Housewives” (which opened with a death!) and suddenly it’s a comedy?
Sadly, I lost this battle years ago. And as we know, the comedy race is really now a dramedy race. The frontrunner, FX’s “The Bear,” is famously...

Well, look at that, we’re up to my lucky number thirteenth Archie’s House of Horrors. And I can’t imagine a better title to celebrate that milestone than Archie Comics: Judgment Day. After all, who doesn’t love talking about the end of the world?
It’s no mystery why apocalyptic settings are, ironically, a fertile playground for horror stories. The stories basically write themselves, as whether we consciously admit it or not, we’re always consumed by the fear of the end of the world. We’re constantly reminded of the doomsday clock and its hands shifting ever closer to midnight. Every day the world throws a new curveball at us and gives us stark reminders that life on planet Earth is not infinite.
That’s why, perhaps, there’s some fun in creating fiction about the end of the world. It gives us the control to...

Amazon Prime Video’s “Fallout” is set within the post-apocalyptic universe of one of the most beloved video game series of all time, something that gave its filmmakers a rich world they could build on, deepen, and expand. When production designer Howard Cummings came on board, the first thing he did was immerse himself in the game and its various environments. “I really got to research it like I was doing a period film,” Cummings told IndieWire, noting that there was a vast network of fans whose YouTube videos he could draw from to collect reference material. Those videos not only provided information, they made Cummings fully aware of how much scrutiny his work would be subject to from the video game’s devoted followers. “I realized, ‘Wow, if I do this, every single thing I do will be analyzed.'”

The previous teasers for The Blackcoat's Daughter director Osgood Perkins' next feature, Longlegs, have been very effective in building an aura of unsettling dread around the mysterious horror flick, but this latest trailer really takes things to another level.
Though the movie is still playing things relatively close to the chest when it comes to revealing specific plot details, this footage does give us a little more to go on, as rookie FBI agent Lee Harker (It Follows star Maika Monroe) becomes obsessed with tracking down a sadistic serial killer (Nicolas Cage) who targets families - and might just have supernatural abilities.
Harker has a personal connection to the killer (did she survive an earlier attack?), which leads her down an even darker path and into the world of the Occult.
Say your prayers, check out the new trailer and poster below along with the initial social media reactions, and...

You might be thinking – what could be the connection between shows as different as The Rookie and The Walking Dead? One is a light-hearted police procedural and the other is a post-apocalyptic zombie show. However, they are actually connected by one thing – the questionable decisions of the writers.
There may be viewers out there who watched The Walking Dead and didn't like Glenn, but we don't know them. He's just a good guy who got better every season. So his completely unexpected and gruesome death came as a real shock.
But do fans remember how the creators seemed to be trying to maintain the ratings with Glenn's help? Shortly before his actual death, fans thought Glenn was dead when he fell right into the hands of the walkers, but after some time he miraculously escaped. Only to die again a few episodes later. Yes, this was definitely done for ratings.

Steven Yeun has done quite well for himself since parting ways with the land of the Walkers. From earning an Oscar nod in 2021 to becoming the first Asian actor to win a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a limited series, the actor has been successful in building an impeccable resume.
But before earning acclaim for his versatility, the actor initially rose to prominence following his portrayal of fan-favorite Glenn in AMC’s The Walking Dead Series. Although in hindsight, leaving the show back in 2016 turned out to be a wise choice for Yeun, the decision wasn’t easy for the actor.

The Spider-Verse gives, and the Spider-Verse takes away. According to Deadline, the live-action TV series "Silk: Spider Society" is dead on arrival after years of development. Earlier this week, MGM+ and Prime Video (which were set to be the streaming home for the series) announced that Nicolas Cage will be starring in his own live-action Spider-Verse spinoff, "Noir," but didn't give any updates on "Silk" a series that was set to shine a spotlight on Korean-American spider-powered hero Cindy Moon. Rights for the character are reportedly set to revert back to Sony Pictures Television, which will continue looking for a home for the show.
Deadline says the series is no more, and their sources vary when it comes to the reason "Silk" isn't moving forward. However, the show has publicly gone through some turnover since even before it was first officially greenlit in 2022. Back in 2018, "Silk" was rumored to be...

Silk: Spider Society, the Sony Pictures series that had Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) on board as executive producers, is no longer moving forward on Prime Video.
The announcement comes just days after Amazon confirmed that the Sony-produced Spider-Man Noir show starring Nicolas Cage is officially in development. No official reason for Silk being scrapped was provided, but Deadline has heard that the decision "likely lies in the show’s tortured development history."
Apparently, the project went through at least three versions, one of which "involved a request for Angela Kang and her writing team to reconfigure the show so it is not hanging so heavily on the central character of Silk."
Former The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang was brought on to oversee Silk: Spider Society, which was marketed as "the first in an expected slate of Marvel TV series based on the Sony...

Two years after Silk: Spider Society was officially announced, the live-action Spider-Man series has been scrapped.
Silk: Spider Society was poised to become the first of several live-action Marvel shows based on Sony Pictures’ library of Spidey characters, but that honour will (likely) now go to Noir, the recently announced series starring Nicholas Cage.
Based on characters created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos, the series would have followed Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker, as she escapes imprisonment and searches for her missing family on her way to becoming the superhero known as Silk. As to why the series has been scrapped, that’s unknown, but Deadline believes the lengthy development period didn’t do it any favours.

The “Silk: Spider Society” live-action series has been scrapped at Amazon.
The show was originally greenlit in November 2022 in a deal with Sony Pictures Television to develop a suite of shows based on Marvel characters that Sony controls. It was meant to debut on the MGM+ linear channel domestically before a global launch on Prime Video.
“The Walking Dead” alum Angela Kang was onboard as executive producer and showrunner, with Kang also signing a multi-year overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios in the process. Kang will continue under that deal. Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal were also executive producers on the series. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Sony will try to shop the series to other buyers.

The Last Of Us Season 2 is in the works. Here’s all the juicy details we know about it so far, including what to expect from the upcoming season when it premieres.
The Last Of Us Season 1 Was A Huge Hit
Post-apocalyptic shows can often be a hit or miss with audiences. Particularly in the last ten to twenty years, the genre has been done and overdone. Franchises like The Walking Dead come to mind. While it started out strong, between the original and all of the spinoffs, watchers tend to have viewing fatigue.
That was not the case with the HBO Max adaptation of The Last Of Us. Season 1 on the platform was a huge hit. Actor Nick Offerman even took home his first Emmy award for his gripping performance in Season 1, Episode 3, Long, Long Time.

On paper, John Krasinski’s If has all the right ingredients for a fun-filled, sentimental family adventure in the Amblin mould. It’s a sweet story about reconnecting with our ‘inner child’, and the wonders of our imagination, and in its concept of making IFs (short for “imaginary friend”) real, it brings to life an array of colourful characters. You can’t help but love the inventiveness on display when Cal (Ryan Reynolds) clambers out of a painting before partying on stage with all the IFs to Tina Turner’s ‘Better Be Good To Me’. It makes for a frequently magical viewing experience, despite a sometimes disjointed storyline.
Krasinski has his heart in the right place, flexing his directorial muscles away from A Quiet Place to showcase his versatility as a filmmaker. For the most part, the switch from horror to children’s fantasy works. If’s childlike vastness is...

Taking a break from terrorising the masses with his brilliant sci/horror franchise A Quiet Place – a prequel to the first two movies is currently in the works with Pig director Michael Sarnoski at the helm – John Krasinski is back again in front and behind the camera in If, the new live action kids movie from Paramount. And if numbers scored by early previews are anything to go by, the film looks to already be one of the biggest winners in this summer’s box office wars.
If (short for Imaginary Friend) is also written and produced by Krasinski. The film stars Cailey Fleming, Ryan Reynolds, Krasinski and legendary Irish film and stage actor Fiona Shaw, alongside the voices of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr. and Steve Carell.
The film follows Bea (Fleming), a 12 year old girl who is still finding hard it to come to terms with the death of her mother 4 years earlier.

If releases in theaters on May 17th, 2024.
The combination of animation and live-action always leaves me somewhat apprehensive about going into any film that ventures into this hybrid method of storytelling. From the ease with which it generates a sensation akin to the uncanny valley to the potential lack of tonal control, movies like If will always be a massive risk that, at worst, could spoil an otherwise wonderful experience. Nevertheless, the simple fact that John Krasinski (A Quiet Place) is at the helm as both writer and director gave me some security and confidence.
If‘s premise is simple yet interesting. Bea (Cailey Fleming) is a girl who finds herself capable of seeing imaginary friends abandoned by other children. In a journey filled with important life lessons, Bea embarks on a magical adventure to reunite the IFs — get it? — with the now-adult people whom they helped during their respective childhoods.

In the early scenes of his new fantasy film geared to families, John Krasinski is seen as a 12-year-old girl’s father who’s in the hospital preparing for what seems to be life-threatening heart surgery. To keep up his daughter’s spirits, he delivers elaborate jokes and comedy routines, leading her to complain that he needn’t bother, that she’s not a child anymore. In other words, she thinks he’s trying too hard, which is something you could also say about If.
There’s no denying the ambition and thoughtfulness on display in this effort written and directed by Krasinski, which marks a notable stylistic turn from his smash hit horror films A Quiet Place and its sequel. If, whose title means “Imaginary Friends,” aims for obvious laughs with its multitude of amusing computer-animated characters featuring all sorts of incarnations from teddy bears to melting marshmallows. Jeffrey Dean Morgan has proved his prowess as one of the greatest The Walking Dead villains albeit turning into a soft character in the later seasons and his own solo spin-off venture with Lauren Cohan’s The Walking Dead: Dead City at AMC. But the actor is now aiming for a big DC role, one that even Jason Momoa is vying for.

AMC Networks is well-positioned to capitalize on the trend of traditional cable companies moving away from expensive sports- and news-inclusive packages toward “skinny” bundles that offer general entertainment and lifestyle programs, executives confirmed this month.
The company is also encouraged by some of its industry peers who have started bundling their offers with competitors, including a recently-announced Disney bundle that will bring together Disney Plus, Hulu and Warner Bros Discovery’s Max, the executives affirmed on a conference call with investors following AMC Networks’ quarterly earnings report.

To say that Contessa Valentina Allegra De Fontaine is something of a shady figure would be quite the understatement, and while the character has yet to make her mark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a meaningful way, she's had her fingers in numerous pies in the comics for years.
Val (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is expected to form the team in the upcoming Thunderbolts* movie, but it seems she may also be fronting another shadowy organization.
Possible spoilers follow.
According to The Cosmic Circus, Val's Oxe Group (or O.X.E.) will factor into the movie. How big a role this organization will play remains to be seen, but it could have major implication for the winder MCU going forward.
In the comics, Oxe is described as the largest holding company in the World, and has ties to the secret Kratos Club, "a group of industrial multimillionaires whose goal is to...

Before crafting the likes of Thanos and Killmonger, who are often considered some of the top Cbm villains, the MCU often struggled to get their villains right, which was apparent in their initial phases. However, the biggest exception during the cinematic giant’s early years was Red Skull, played by Hugo Weaving, who did an impeccable job playing the Hydra head.
Unfortunately, despite having a blast playing the character, Weaving didn’t return to reprise the role in Avengers: Infinity War and was replaced by The Walking Dead star Ross Marquand. Although The Matrix star has cited paycheck disputes as the reason for not returning in Infinity War and Endgame, economics doesn’t seem to be the lone reason behind his absence.

Once upon a time, the post-apocalypse genre was almost exclusive to movies, with the occasional exception, such as the 1994 mini-series The Stand. Fortunately, the advent of streaming services and bigger budgets changed the paradigm.
Nowadays, radioactive landscapes, bombed-out buildings, hordes of shambling, reanimated dead bodies in various states of decomposition, and desperate, struggling survivors are commonplace on smaller screens.
Ostensibly, post-apocalypse shows are about survival in a devastated world. Dig a little deeper, however, and there's almost always a tale of morality or lack thereof. Movies struggle with this, often opting for CG effects to dazzle and attract, neglecting the human aspect.
That's what makes TV the perfect conduit for a tale of post-apocalyptic survivalism. While not all of them get it right, like 2020's The Stand, a long, drawn-out affair has the luxury of time and world-building on its side.
