The Miley Cyrus family drama has taken an unexpected turn. The Grammy Award winner’s personal life has been subjected to a lot of scrutiny throughout her career. Her divorce from Hollywood heartthrob Liam Hemsworth brought a fresh wave of controversy, but Cyrus never let it affect her.
However, in a strange turn of events, her sister, Noah Cyrus, has sparked new rumors after liking Hemsworth’s gym selfie. Given the drama that the family has been embroiled in of late, this action has certainly set off the grapevine.

Though Miley Cyrus and her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, have both paved famous music careers, their individual relationships to fame and success are “wildly different”, and the reason why makes Miley “emotional.”
In the “Jaded” singer’s new Hulu special “Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions)”, she explained how their different upbringings reflect how they each view and measure success.

Adapted from the author’s 1999 debut novel, “God Is A Bullet” is the first screen translation of a work by one Boston Teran, a prolific but pseudononymous scribe of popular page-turners. Those tomes have been well-received by thriller fans, though others have speculated they might be a genre put-on penned by possibly more than one well-known literary figure. Nick Cassavetes’ slick adaptation certainly maintains the book’s mix of lurid incident and pontificating pretentiousness — albeit without the kind of intensity that might have made this far-fetched story credible, or the atmospheric style that might’ve pulled it off as a fevered nightmare à la David Lynch instead.
These 156 minutes, with cop Nicolaj Coster-Waldau and escaped captive Maika Monroe pursuing the cult of devil-worshipping scumbags who’ve kidnapped his daughter, are not exactly dull. But they are rather ludicrous, without being much fun. It’s hard not to imagine this overlong,...

Some names, once viewed on a marquee or YouTube ad, tend to draw a specific audience ranging from real fans to, “Oh yes, that guy.“ I could put the Duplass brothers, Mark and Jay, into both of these categories, with a lengthy filmography largely encompassing projects their company Duplass Brothers Productions has spearheaded, such as 2010’s “Cyrus” and “Jeff, Who Lives at Home”; Mark, in particular, has emerged as the higher profile of the two, consistently delivering as an actor in diverse roles ranging from horror (“Creep”) to TV comedy (“The League”) offbeat humor and more. “The Long Long Night,” another Mark Duplass vehicle, would likely fall into the latter category; originating from show creator/co-star Barret O’Brien, the six-episode series depicts the falling out between two former best friends, Pete (Duplass) and Carroll (O’Brien) and the night that kicked it off, told through black and white footage of...

There have been some shows that cover melodramatic stories such as ‘‘The Slap,’ which has been famous for portraying a family drama that shows from one small scene where a male adult slaps a couple’s misbehaving child which causes family tension and other harbored negative secrets. The hit comedic show ‘Pen15’ has this absurd humor of showing two female actresses who are in their thirties that play seventh-grade middle-schoolers and experience their struggles of fitting in as teenagers in the 2000s. In this new full-length comedic film ‘The Drop,’ the ‘Pen15’ star Anna Konkle and Jermaine Fowler (who appear in Coming 2 America and Sorry to Bother You) both play a young adult couple who attend a wedding on a tropical island. One of them holds a newborn baby and accidentally drops it. The baby seems perfectly unharmed, but the witnesses, which are their friends,...

Billy Ray Cyrus has confirmed his engagement to Australian singer, Firerose.
The country music star, 61, told People that he asked his “New Day” song collaborator to marry him back in August. The 34-year-old singer, who legally identifies as Firerose — a name given to her by her grandmother as a child in Australia — explained that the proposal wasn’t formal; there was no bended knee, nor a ring.
“Billy looked at me and said, ‘Do you, do you wanna marry me?’ And I was just like, ‘Of course I do. I love you,'” she told the magazine. Firerose, whom Cyrus says is “the real deal,” later picked out a diamond and designed her own ring. “He said, ‘I love you. I wanna make this official. I wanna be with you forever.'”

Everyone’s involved in a hustle nowadays. The economy is in the trash, the job market is a joke, and making ends meets is a constant struggle for many. If you’re comfortable with where you’re at, consider yourself fortunate. Not everyone has that luxury, and in David Yate’s The Pain Hustlers, one woman is about to discover what it’s like to play dirty for those pulling the wool over the eyes of the public.
Catherine O’Hara, Andy Garcia, and Jay Duplass are joining Chris Evans and Emily Blunt in Yate’s upcoming film, debuting on Netflix. Brian d’Arcy James and Chloe Coleman also star.
A crime drama that warps perceptions of the American Dream, the official logline for The Pain Hustlers says the film follows an unemployed “blue-collar woman struggling to raise her daughter [who] takes a job at a failing pharmaceutical start-up, only to get involved in a dangerous racketeering scheme.

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.
In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

Entertainment Weekly reported in 2008 that Jonah Hill was entering negotiations to join Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox in Michael Bay’s “Transforms” sequel. Hill’s profile was on the rise after his breakthrough role in the 2007 comedy blockbuster “Superbad,” and the second “Transformers” sequel was one of the hottest studio tentpoles in development. Hill turned down the role, and it might have had something to do with his “Superbad” co-star and writer Seth Rogen. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Rogen shared the advice he gave Hill about passing on Bay’s sequel.
As The New York Times reports: “Rogen recalled his friend Jonah Hill’s approaching him for advice after being offered a part in a ‘Transformers’ sequel. ‘I can see if Steven Spielberg’s calling you, asking you to do something, how that’s hard to turn down,’ Rogen told an interviewer, recounting the exchange.

Mark Duplass was suffering from some serious quarantine fatigue.
“With the pandemic going on I started thinking, what are the things I can do to better myself besides watch ‘Groundhog Day’ again with my children,” the indie filmmaker remembers. “I decided to take some Spanish lessons and ended up developing sort of an interesting rapport with one of my teachers.”
That relationship between teacher and student provided the germ of the idea for Duplass, an indie filmmaker whose credits include “Cyrus” and “Jeff, Who Lives at Home.” He began to think about how he might make a film out of that kind of bond and hit on a simple concept, one that he pitched to Natalie Morales, a friend who had worked with Duplass on the HBO series “Room 104.”

The latest in a series of writers highlighting underseen streaming films singles out an affecting comedy drama about an unusual scenario
The opening credits of Paddleton play over images of its dual protagonists, Michael (Mark Duplass) and Andy (Ray Romano), hitting a tennis ball against the back of an expansive drive-in movie screen, with the goal of bouncing it into a garbage can situated between them. It’s the invented sport the film is named after, and an apt metaphor for the artistic goals of Mark and his brother Jay Duplass, who have been producing low-budget intimate dramas for the last 15 years. Their films, which include The Puffy Chair, Jeff Who Lives at Home and Cyrus, occasionally play on the big screen, but that’s not where they belong, and neither does Paddleton, their first in a four-picture production deal with Netflix. It should be watched in your living room,...

It's hard to believe that I've been attending the Sundance Film Festival for more than a decade now. In fact, this year marks my eleventh time attending the festival, and what a ride its been. Jonah Hill managed to pick up two Oscar nominations before his 30th birthday. It is a pretty impressive fete since the bulk of Hill’s early film work had been in outrageous comedies like “Superbad” and “21 Jump Street,” which seldom are recognized by Academy voters. He did take some serious roles in “Moneyball” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” which earned him those two nominations.
This year Hill turns his sights on television where he and Oscar Winner Emma Stone just launched their new television series “Maniac” on Netflix. It tells the story of people who take part in an experimental drug test that doesn’t work out as planned. The new drug is supposed to solve the problems of whoever it is that takes it, but that actually doesn’t happen.

From his melancholic Oscar-nominated turn in “Chicago” to feuding with Will Ferrell in “Step Brothers,” John C. Reilly is the rare American actor to oscillate from dramatic roles to broad comedies. His wife, Alison Dickey, has always hoped to unite those two modes. “We’ve been together a long time,” said Dickey. An independent producer, she met Reilly when she was working as Sean Penn’s assistant on the set of “Casualties of War” in 1989. “I’ve seen the whole trajectory of his career. I’m so well aware of what he’s capable of doing. I always feel somewhat satisfied and somewhat unsatisfied after I watch a film of his, just in terms of wanting to get the whole palette.”

According to our racetrack odds, the Emmy front-runner for Best Documentary/Nonfiction Series is the nature program “Blue Planet II.” But are we underestimating Netflix‘s “Wild Wild Country”? The six-part series generated water-cooler discussion after it premiered in March and could appeal to the same voters who awarded this category to the true-crime docs “The Jinx” in 2015 and “Making a Murderer” in 2016.
Directed by Maclain Way and Chapman Way, “Wild Wild Country” recounts the story of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, his charismatic personal assistant Ma Anand Sheela, and the escalating conflict between his spiritual followers and the Oregon community that surrounded them. The series has five total nominations, also including bids for its directing, picture editing, sound editing, and sound mixing.

In the first trailer for Jonah Hill’s Mid90s, there are elements of comedy and drama, but it definitely leans into the drama.
The coming-of-age pic marks Hill’s directorial debut and it feels reminiscent of Larry Clark’s ’90s pic Kids — which seems appropriate considering the title. The movie follows Stevie (Sunny Suljic), a 13-year-old in ’90s-era La who spends his summer navigating between a troubled home life and a group of new friends he meets at a Motor Avenue skate shop.
The only funny part of the trailer is the exchange between a group of skater misfits and a security guard (played by the hilarious Jerrod Carmichael), who compares one of the long-haired kids to Sheryl Crow. Other than that, the movie seems pretty heavy. Considering Hill is known for his comedy, many probably expected him to make a side-splitting romp for his first time out as a director.

When music supervisor Maggie Phillips joined the creative team on Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” in season two she wanted to “feature more female artists” on the soundtrack because “it’s such a female-driven show.” The Emmy Award-winning series imagines a future in which women are forced to become concubines in a theocratic society, and it centers on one woman, June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), who fights against that system. Phillips chose songs to reflect June’s music taste, asking herself, “What would she have played in her head?” June “seems like the kind of lady that would want a lady representing her,” so Phillips sought out female vocalists and musicians to underscore various scenes. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Netflix’s new animated comedy “Big Mouth” takes on adolescence from a distinctly adult point of view, tracking the middle school adventures of a pack of tweens whose bodies are changing in crazy ways. Fortunately, their antics are brought to life by the crème de la crème of voice acting — starting with the powerhouse himself, co-creator Nick Kroll.
It wasn’t a surprise when Kroll, an executive producer of the show, recruited his friend and Broadway co-star John Mulaney to the roster. After that, the voice cast list seems to be a handful of your favorite SNL alums and comedy icons. Even Dick Whitman makes a small, yet savory appearance.

[Editor’s Note: This article is presented in partnership with HBO in support of Room 104, which premieres onJuly 28 at 11:30 p.m. Et.]
“Room 104” isn’t like anything else you’ll see on television this year. The new half-hour, genre-bending HBO series features a number of unique facets, but they all relate back, in one way or another, to the creative minds of Mark and Jay Duplass.
The writers, producers, directors, and actors known for breakout independent films like “The Puffy Chair” and “Cyrus” as well as award-winning television like “Togetherness” and “Transparent” have come together to create the latest exciting original series on the Home Box Office network.
Set in a single room in your typical American motel chain, each week tells a different story and all 12 episodes of Season 1 were produced by the Duplass Brothers. The tone, characters, and era can all change week-to-week, and viewers should be ready for drama, comedy, horror, and at the start of each new entry. What unites each story is the common search for...

It’s been well over a year since the Duplass Brothers’ beloved HBO comedy-drama “Togetherness” signed off for good, but if you’re still in mourning (we don’t blame you) the indie duo may have just the perfect pick-me-up.
“Room 104,” the new anthology series from Mark and Jay Duplass, premieres on HBO July 28, and the official trailer has arrived, promising this will surely go down as the weirdest and craziest thing the Duplass’ have ever done. And that’s saying something given how bizarre their films like “Cyrus” and “Jeff Who Lives At Home” have been.

It was only a matter of time before Jordan Peele signed a flashy first-look deal with a major studio. Peele’s directorial debut “Get Out” has taken in $195 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of roughly $5 million, and his deft handling of racial issues within the horror-thriller genre has put him in a class of storytelling all by himself. “Get Out” distributor Universal Pictures now has a two-year overall production deal with Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, giving the studio the rights to his untitled social thriller that he will write, direct and produce.

When you get to chat to two comedy geniuses at once, it doesn’t feel much like an interview. It’s more like sitting in on some well-honed hilarity, and trying not to make a tit of yourself when you try and interject with a question. This is what it felt like when I sat down with Julian Barratt and Simon Farnaby for twenty minutes, in a snazzy central London meeting room, to talk about Mindhorn.

Mark Duplass has found his happy place. At a time when many independent filmmakers are struggling to get movies made, the 39-year-old is enjoying the kind of artistic freedom most filmmakers only dream about, churning out low budget movies that afford him virtually complete creative control.

Instead, Duplass wrote a 10-page outline that allowed for significant improvisation during shooting. Director Todd Phillips talks to us about his best film in years, War Dogs, and how he made Jonah Hill and Bradley Cooper seem so scary...
Todd Phillips sits in a London hotel, feet up, coolly puffing away on his e-cigarette. He looks more like an American on holiday than a tired film director on the junket trail for his new movie, but Phillips has good reason to look content: the crime drama War Dogs is easily his best film in years.
A decidedly Scorsese-esque film based on a pair of Miami hustlers who make a fortune selling guns to the Us military, it has more than a few comic flourishes - as you’d expect from the director of Due Date and the Hangover trilogy - but War Dogs also has something serious and troubling to say about the way governments and corporations generate wealth through conflict.

Thanks to the Russo brothers; Swann, Ajax, Cochise, Rembrandt, and other members of “The Warriors” are coming out to play again. Let’s check it out.
In conjunction with Paramount TV and Hulu, Joe and Anthony Russo are doing a re-imagining of Walter Hill’s 1979 cult classic ‘The Warriors’ with a 1 hour drama series which will be shown on Hulu. They plan to honor the movie while adding their own touch of grit, sex and violence to the story. Story writer for the series will be Frank Baldwin.
The film is an adaption of Sol Yurick’s novel, of the same name. Set in 1979 NYC it tells the tale of a Coney Island gang that must make it back to their home turf after being framed for the murder of Cyrus, leader of the largest gang in NYC. Jay Duplass grew up in New Orleans playing a very defined role: Director.
While Jay said his younger brother Mark was his collaborator as they “made things,” including magic shows and movies, Mark was always the subject, in front of the camera. Jay was behind the camera. His job was to make all their crazy ideas work, he said: “Mark would throw us off a cliff and I would make sure we had a parachute and food.”
So it came as something of a surprise when showrunner Jill Soloway decided that Jay was perfect casting as Josh Pfefferman in her new Amazon series, “Transparent.”
He wasn’t sure, having just played a small roles in a Joe Swanberg movie and “The Mindy Project” and taken one intensive Sandy Meisner class in Austin, Texas. “It was basically like learning how to be totally vulnerable and divulge all of our hangups and let it rip,...

A Child is Waiting: Delpy’s Return to RomCom a Mixed Bag
Julie Delpy has managed to balance a terrific (and prolific) career as an actress and director, breaking out over the past decade as a pragmatic purveyor of romantic entanglements thanks to her twin titles 2 Days in Paris (2007) and 2 Days in New York (2012). Although The Countess (2008), her curious English language examination of the bloodthirsty historical figure Countess Bathory was unfortunately belabored, her tendency to portray complex romantic scenarios masquerading as fluff has proven to be her overarching strength. Which is exactly why her latest, Lolo, a sometimes pleasant endeavor, feels like more of a crass disappointment than it really is. Examining an overworked single mother’s attempt to rediscover romance despite the secret sabotage of her spoiled adult child, the narrative’s dependence on familiar tropes, not to mention the neglect of its central romance, bears remarkable similarity...

Meet some of the best directors working today, who haven't gone down the blockbuster movie route...
Ever find it a bit lame when the same big name directors get kicked around for every high profile project? Christopher Nolan, Jj Abrams, maybe the Russo Brothers? With so much focus on blockbuster films these days, getting a major franchise job seems like the main acknowledgement of success for a filmmaker. And yes, both the financial and creative rewards can be great. But there are plenty of other directors out there, doing their own thing, from art house auteurs to Dtv action specialists.
Here are 25 examples.
Lee Hardcastle
Even if you don’t know his name, you’ve probably seen Lee Hardcastle’s ultraviolent claymations shared on social media. He first started getting noticed for his two-minute remake of The Thing, starring the famous stop motion penguin Pingu. Far from just a cheap one-joke mash-up,...

"The cavalry isn't coming." With those words, actor-director-producer Mark Duplass launched into a rousing keynote at the SXSW Film Festival on Sunday. Currently writing a second season of HBO's "Togetherness" with his brother Jay, Mark continues to act in a wide variety of projects, while he and his brother produce several movies a year and recently signed a four-picture deal with Netflix. A decade ago, their feature-length debut "The Puffy Chair" became a sleeper hit on the festival circuit, which led the pair to Los Angeles, direct two studio projects ("Cyrus" and "Jeff, Who Lives at Home") and continue building momentum. These days, both brothers also act on television (Mark on "The League" and Jay on "Transparent"). The Duplass brothers' brand has never been stronger — but it hasn't always been that way. As part of our "How I Shot That" series, Indiewire asked cinematographer Jas Shelton about his work on Kyle Patrick Alvarez's "The Stanford Prison Experiment," which recreates Phillip Zimbardo's infamous 1971 study into the psychology of power. The film, which premiered recently at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, marks Shelton's second collaboration with Alvarez after "C.O.G." He has shot Mark and Jay Duplass' "Cyrus," "Jeff Who Lives at Home," and most recently, their HBO show "Togetherness." What camera and lens did you use? Red Dragon, first-generation Leitz lenses (we totally fell in love with the lens and thought it was perfect for the movie). How did you decide which camera to use? I'm very agnostic when it comes to cameras. I don't have one particular camera I like. I kind of think of digital cameras as like film stocks, so each project dictates which camera we'll use. The kings of mumblecore are coming to Netflix. At Sundance Film Festival, the streaming video on demand (Svod) platform announced a four-film deal with brothers Mark and Jay Duplass.
According to Deadline, which first reported the deal, Netflix will finance the four films. The Duplass brothers, known for directorial credits like Cyrus and Jeff Who Lives At Home as well as acting credits like The League (Mark) and Transparent (Jay), will briefly debut the films in theaters before bringing them to Netflix a short time later. That model is the same one Amazon plans to use with its own line of original films.
For the Duplass brothers, the Netflix deal has a lot to do with economics. “My first movie made a grand total of $220,000 in theaters but about 5 million people have seen it on Netflix because they can click on it and they can try it out,” said Mark Duplass.
