Oscar-nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino knows how to make a goddamn movie. That was clear to fans of his earlier works, like the sumptuous "I Am Love," more than a decade ago. It was clear to most other people about five years ago when the bold one-two punch of "Call Me By Your Name" and "Suspiria" made moviegoers sit up and pay attention. And it's more clear than ever now, with the release of the director's latest (and reportedly biggest-budgeted) effort, the endlessly thrilling Zendaya-led sports drama "Challengers." Film after film, Guadagnino manages to tap into some hidden corners of our hearts by telling stories that are evocative and colorful, musical and sensual, messy and true.
Though Guadagnino has gained more attention in recent years, the filmmaker has actually been working since the '90s and has by now made eight narrative (or meta-narrative) features, a TV show, and several documentaries and shorts.

Luca Guadagnino’s sizzling, sharply scripted drama, co-starring Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, is such fun it’s almost indecent
Nobody harnesses horniness quite like Luca Guadagnino. With his lavish, luxurious portrait of forbidden lust, the Tilda Swinton-starring I Am Love, Guadagnino embraced one of cinema’s most cliched symbolic sensual devices, filling the frame with come-hither shots of delectable food. But somehow, in his hands, this hackneyed metaphor feels fresh, and the film is a skin-tingling exploration of erotic tension. Then there’s Call Me By Your Name, with its scenes of peach-grappling and languid yearning, in which even the spaces between the characters are charged with longing. And Bones and All, which virtually rebrands cannibalism as a legitimate kink. But even by Guadagnino’s highly charged standards, Challengers is an absurdly sexy movie. With its power plays and exquisite cruelty, the shimmering beauty of its three leads and their tantalising interlocking desires,...

Amazon MGM Studios has released the final trailer for Challengers, starring Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court.
Married to a champion on a losing streak, Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick—his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend.
As their pasts and present collide and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself what it will cost to win. In addition to the trailer, you can also watch a featurette on the film’s music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
From visionary filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, Challengers is rated R for language throughout, some sexual content, and graphic nudity. The drama will open in theaters on Friday, April 26, 2024.
Guadagnino directed the movie from a script by Justin Kuritzkes.

Challengers Vs Dune 2: Zendaya Leads With Her Tennis Drama In One Aspect, Leaving Behind Her & Timothee Chalamet’s Blockbuster Film. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Zendaya is one of the most talented actresses in Hollywood among the current generation, and she has impressed us with her performance in Dune 2. Now, as per the Challengers’ reviews, she is winning there, too. However, the actress is currently leading in one aspect, and she beat her colleague Timothee Chalamet. The tennis drama still has a few days before its theatrical release, and here’s why it is winning.
Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino has directed the sports drama starring Zendaya in the lead role. He is known for critically acclaimed films like I Am Love, Bigger Splash, and Call Me by Your Name. He has been nominated for both the Oscars and BAFTA Awards. The 2024 film features Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist in significant roles besides the Dune actress.

Tennis is notoriously not a sport that lends itself well to the medium of film. The tension in this game is all about the silent moments between points, and continuously hitting a small ball with a racquet doesn’t make for exciting entertainment.

Tilda Swinton is an Oscar-winning actress who has been a favorite of both the art house crowd and the multiplexes, consistently taking on challenging roles in both indie fare and box office hits. Let’s take a look back at 18 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1960 in London, England, Swinton got her start working with experimental filmmaker Derek Jarman, making her movie debut in the director’s “Caravaggio” (1986). She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress in his film “Edward II” (1991), kicking off a decades-long romance between the actress and awards groups. She also showed her willingness to push herself in offbeat projects with daring auteurs, an edict that would lead to collaborations with Luca Guadanigno, Jim Jarmusch, Bong Joon Ho, Sally Potter, Wes Anderson and the Coen Brothers.

‘Challengers’ Trailer: Luca Guadagnino’s New Romantic Sports Comedy Stars Zendaya & Arrives In April
“Challengers,” the new comedy from Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, seems like a big left turn for a director who can seemingly do it all. Guadagnino has done things like acclaimed romantic dramas like “Call Me Be Your Name,” chilling horror like “Suspiria,” and “Bones And All” and very formal arthouse films like, “I Am Love,” and he can seemingly do it all.

Passages should earn Khadija Zeggaï an Oscar nomination.
As the voting for the 96th Academy Award nominations continues, there's a possibility that we'll get a repeat of 2019 in Best Costume Design. Though not disastrous, that season saw the lineup comprised exclusively of Best Picture nominees – a sad sight for a race where, once upon a time, brilliant work could be rewarded regardless of a film's general buzz. Maybe Wonka, The Color Purple, or Napoleon will stop that from happening, but it'll still result in a fairly expected ballot. Why not look elsewhere to some of the year's underrated gems? Please, Costume Branch, remember you represent the category of I Am Love, Bright Star, Marie Antoinette, and many others.
I've already made the case for La Chimera, Passages, and Pain Hustlers, so I won't repeat it. Still, even with those out of the way, there's plenty to celebrate from 2023 cinema.

After delivering a blisteringly saucy trailer, Luca Guadagnino’s latest film “Challengers” will set the Venice Film Festival ablaze as their opening night film, screening out of competition, TheWrap has confirmed.
The film follows Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a successful tennis champ drawn to two men, played by Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor. But the pair continue to become entwined in each other’s lives to a dangerous degree.
This isn’t the first time Guadagnino has debuted a feature at the Venice Film Festival. His 2009 feature “I Am Love” screened at the fest, as well as 2015’s “A Bigger Splash,” 2018’s “Suspiria” and last year’s “Bones and All.” Zendaya has also had a feature screen in Venice, with 2021’s “Dune,” the second half of which will debut later this year.
The script comes from newcomer Justin Kuritzkes with Amy Pascal, Luca Guadagnino, Zendaya and Rachel O’Connor acting as producers.

The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.
“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will also bring plenty of laughs when it returns for its fourth season. The sketch comedy series premieres April 14.
On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

Additional highlights of the streaming service’s April lineup include the debut of Love & Death, a limited series starring Elizabeth Olsen and Patrick Fugit; season two of Somebody Somewhere with Bridget Everett; and the return of 100 Foot Wave for a second season.
In addition, the Titans mid-season premiere arrives on April 13. In the final season of HBO Max’s “Barry,” premiering on April 16, Barry’s arrest for the murder of Cousineau’s girlfriend leads to a shocking conclusion. Barry (Bill Hader), a hitman who stumbles into acting, explores the dark, often comedic underbelly of both LA gangsters and Hollywood. Henry Winkler stars as Cousineau, Barry’s acting teacher and the man forced to confront the reality of his former student.

Another crime story will come to HBO Max in April, although this one is based on a true story. “Love & Death” revolves around the murder of Betty Gore (played by Lily Rabe) in a small Texas town in 1980. Her husband Alan (Jesse Plemons) has an affair with Candy (Elizabeth Olsen), who attends their church. Suddenly, the thrills turn deadly. There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Italian actor-turned-director Andrea Di Stefano, whose gritty police drama “The Last Night of Amore” is launching from the Berlin Film Festival’s Berlinale Special Gala section, reps an Italian anomaly.
“Amore,” which refers to a police lieutenant named Franco Amore, oddly marks Di Stefano debut directing an Italian-language film after helming well-received U.S. indie thrillers “Escobar: Paradise Lost,” with Benicio del Toro, and “The Informer.”
Sumptuosly shot in 35mm film and set in present-day Milan, “Last Night of Amore” harks back to Italian genre films of the 70s and 80s but has a fresh contemporary feel. The plot sees the good lieutenant, played by Italian A-lister Pierfrancesco Favino being called on the night before retirement to investigate a crime scene where his best friend and long-time partner Dino has been killed during a diamond heist. Complications ensue, things get very frantic, and we learn how his love for his wife Viviana,...

If I were to sum up with one word what the best way to describe Luca Guadagnino‘s filmography would be, it is that they are all about one thing: love.
Every one of his films is about love in some way, shape, or form, whether in its purest state in Call Me By Your Name or in its darkest in Suspiria.
All of Guadagnino’s characters desire love in some way, and in each of his films, he explores just how powerful love can be. Everyone is deserving of love because it comes from everyone, and the Italian director’s latest film proves that anyone, even cannibals, can get a piece of that meaty action.
Bones and All is a romantic horror film directed by Guadagnino, which stars Timothée Chalamet, Taylor Russell, Michael Stuhlbarg and Mark Rylance. The film follows a young cannibal girl named Maren (Russell) who, after...

“My Cannibal Romance” or “The Fine Young Cannibals” might be alternate titles for this film except that it suggests comedy rather than the high-concept horror film that Bones And All really is. Starring Timothee Chalamet and Canadian actress Taylor Russell as a very different kind of star-crossed lovers, Bones And All does two surprising things: combining romance with horror in a very different way and creating a new kind of monster beyond the usual vampires, werewolves and zombies. The characters at the center of this tale are born as cannibals, compelled to eat human flesh the same way vampires are compelled to drink blood. However, despite the image that evokes,...

Luca Guadagnino is one filmmaker I have the utmost respect for. From Call Me By Your Name to I Am Love, and his unique take on Suspiria, I’ve become an admirer of his work. And his latest is something a little shocking, and more than a little unsettling for some. Bones and All is a story about two people who meet and fall in love while on a road trip. And yes, they are both cannibals who desire the taste of human flesh. The fascinating and occasionally brutal feature stars Taylor Russell and Timothee Chalamet. And this is certainly a bold feature, one that is challenging, intriguing, and slightly controversial.
Recently, we had the delight of speaking with impressive Luca Guadagnino and the fantastic Taylor Russell. For Guadagnino, I asked the acclaimed filmmaker about the balance of violence with a love story. He’s a terrific person to speak to,...

Timothee Chalamet had all of Venice seeing red on Friday night at the world premiere of “Bones and All.” The actor donned a sparkling backless jumpsuit in a blood-red shade — a cheeky wink to the drama’s central protagonists, two cannibals in love.
The film, which reunites Chalamet with his “Call Me By Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino, lives up to its title with gory attacks and scenes that involve limb-chewing and eating. But despite the uncomfortable subject matter, the audience at the Venice premiere for the movie devoured “Bones and All.” The film received a 8.5-minute standing ovation, the longest and most enthusiastic of the festival so far.
As the crowds inside the Sala Grande cheered “Luca! Luca!,” the Italian director wiped tears from his eyes. Chalamet and the cast — including Taylor Russell, who plays the film’s anti-heroine Maren — walked down the steps of the theater’s mezzanine...

Prolific Italian film and stage director Mario Martone, who is a Venice aficionado, is back in competition in Cannes 27 years after his Elena Ferrante adaptation “L’amore molesto” (“Troubling Love”) launched in competition from the Croisette in 1995. And there is a close connection between these two films that delve deep into the entrails of Martone’s native Naples.
In his well-received “Nostalgia”, praised by Variety as Martone’s “most rewarding film in years,” ace actor Pierfrancesco Favino plays the middle-aged Felice Lasco, who returns to the bustling port city after having lived in Egypt for 40 years. Once back, he is caught up in memories of a distant life spent in his hometown, as his criminal youth slowly catches up with him.
Martone spoke to Variety about why he adapted Neapolitan author Ermanno Rea’s novel by the same title and the elements that make it “more universal than a mere Neapolitan tale.

The genie is out of the bottle for the dynamic director George Miller and his newest venture “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” starring Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba. You’ll hear the awards comparisons that call it Miller’s version of “The Shape of Water” (2017), Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winner for best picture, but it’s closer to Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” (2012) but with an accessible and soulful core. It’s a love story to the storytellers, and a love letter to mankind. With its imperfect perfection, the first contender for Oscar’s most coveted prize has arrived.
Two of Miller’s films have received nominations: “Babe” (1995) and “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015). This is hands-down his most narrative-rich achievement, something that could bring him three Oscar noms as a producer, director and co-writer.

Lina Wertmüller, the Italian filmmaker who made history in 1977 when she became the first woman to be nominated for the Best Director Oscar, has died at the age of 93.
Her passing was widely reported in the Italian press including in La Republica, which noted that she died at home in her birthplace of Rome.
Born in 1928, Wertmüller described her childhood as adventurous, being expelled from 15 different Catholic schools. A love of comic books was a key influence in her getting into the entertainment business, particularly Flash Gordon, and she became determined to work in film and theater from a young age.
After graduating from drama school in Rome, she began producing plays and worked in a variety of roles including as a set designer, publicist and puppeteer; the latter saw her spend years touring with an avant-garde puppet group.

With all the hurry-up-and-wait backstage drama that went into finally greenlighting the sequel to a massive tentpole such as “Dune,” it feels like no small miracle that a postmodern movie memoir like “The Souvenir” gets to have a second part at all. But the double-sided conceit for director Joanna Hogg’s auto-fiction saga was baked in from the beginning.
Viewers who stayed through the end of the first film, one of 2019’s most acclaimed movies, might’ve caught the “insurance policy,” as Hogg called it in an interview with IndieWire, inscribed in the end credits: “Part II coming soon.” Hogg said that was her own personal self-guarantee. “The financiers weren’t going to tell me I couldn’t do it,” she said.
Like the best sequels, “Souvenir: Part II” heightens the stakes for its central character and adds a new layer to her journey. In that respect, the movie...

Happy belated 50th to Luca Guadagnino.
by Cláudio Alves
Like many a director in film history, Luca Guadagnino's cinema is characterized by common themes, through lines transversal to all his works, though more evident in some than others. During the release and promotional tour of Call Me By Your Name, the Italian auteur came to realize that his last three films could be construed as an unofficial trilogy of desire, though he later repudiated the notion. Nevertheless, akin to Bergman's Silence of God tercet, Guadagnino's I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, and Call Me By Your Name complete a three-part thesis in cinematic form. Instead of the Swedish master's spiritual dread, we have a multifaceted portrait of human desire as a force so great it's both overwhelming and life-changing, magical and terrifying, a blessing, a curse, perchance a deliverance…...

With Oscar voting officially underway, members of the Academy are hunkering down and catching up on all the films from this year of extended eligibility. Inarguably the hardest awards season to read in modern history, there are dozens of interpretations of how the season will shake out and where AMPAS voters’ minds are within the race.
I believe there’s an “X” factor to this awards season that could potentially affect what pundits perceive the nominations could look like. In addition, there’s also a disagreement on what this “X” factor could be. Some argue: just look at the guilds, that’s the only Oscar voter overlap. Others say Academy voters are disconnected from the season, and anything is possible. The truth is, it’s somewhere in the middle — but my theory is that international voters can be the tilt for various films and performances.

In the golden age of Hollywood, the Academy Awards recognized costume design with two categories: color film and black-and-white. Since the categories merged in 1967, only three contemporary-set films have won the best costume design Oscar: Travels With My Aunt in 1973, All That Jazz in 1980 and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in 1995. Subsequent nominations have been scarce: The Devil Wears Prada and The Queen in 2006, I Am Love in 2011 and La La Land in 2017.

Filmmaker Luca Guadagnino has made a splash at the Golden Globes in the past. His Italian drama “I Am Love” (2010) was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, and then “Call Me by Your Name” (2017) picked up three bids for Best Film Drama and for Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer‘s performances. But neither of those films took home any trophies. Could Guadagnino finally win for his move to series television with “We Are Who We Are” on HBO Max? He wouldn’t be the first big-screen auteur to win on the small screen.
“We Are Who We Are” bears some resemblance to “Call Me by Your Name,” Guadagnino’s biggest Globes success so far. Both are about queer American teenagers coming of age in Italy. In “We Are,” it’s Fraser (Jack Dylan Grazer), whose mother (Chloe Sevigny) is the new commander of a US Army base in Italy. Fraser...

Tilda Swinton is basically the David Bowie of film, a multi-faceted, eccentric chameleon who is equally comfortable in experimental, art house cinema, character driven indies and massive blockbusters. It helps that she’s a spitting image of Bowie too. In a 30+ year career between acting, performance art, theatre and more, it’s less that Swinton has gotten increasingly adventurous and more that now even mainstream audiences have come to accept her frequent innovations and daring transformations. She’s pulled her biggest gambit yet in Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria,” opening Oct. 26. Here’s how Swinton has evolved up till now.
Caravaggio (1986)
Tilda Swinton’s first film was the experimental drama “Caravaggio,” kicking off a long, working relationship with director Derek Jarman. It’s a fictionalized look at the life of Michelangelo and also is the film debut of actor Sean Bean.
Orlando (1992)
Tilda Swinton landed the lead role in Sally Potter’s Elizabethan-era drama “Orlando,...

Luca Guadagnino often relies on a distinct period of time to frame his stories — and not just for projects set long in the past. His contemporary films, like “I Am Love,” often take place years before they were shot in order to give the filmmaker “a little perspective” on the people, places, and events he’s capturing.
“I’m committed to a sense of reality. I think that it’s important,” Guadagnino said in an interview. “I believe that reality is everywhere. It’s all around us. It’s above us, below us, left, right, center, everywhere. And more often than we expect, the urgency of reality — [as seen] through the media, for instance — doesn’t hit us the way the media believes [it does].”
For his latest directorial effort and first television series, Guadagnino again put a few years of distance between himself and the setting for “We Are Who We Are,” eight...
