- Quotes
Horatio Caine: The FBI considers the Mala Noche the most dangerous crime organization in the United States, ladies and gentlemen. They stay away from drugs to avoid deportation, but what they specialize in is murder for hire, extortion... the list goes on. In short... they are Miami's new Mafia. Now, I must tell you that they have already killed six police officers.
Ryan Wolfe: Trying to scare us, Horatio?
Horatio Caine: Born in the Nicaraguan wars, they have no fear. So anyone not interested, I'll understand.
[Calleigh, Delko, and Wolfe all exchange glances]
Calleigh Duquesne: We're in if you're in.
In essence, this is about a new gang, the "Mala Noche," that has made big inroads in Miami, a gang that brags that it outdoes the Mafia easily. The Hispanic group isn't into drugs because they don't want to risk deportation, but they are murderers for hire and they are smuggling in hand grenades, among other things. They have also murdered and raped a few others here and those cases are examined, too, in this episode.
Who is helping them, who gets hurt along the way, and the fact our hero Lt. Caine (David Caruso) is number one on the Mala Noche's hit list, all combine for an intense opening show - devoted to this one story. The key is to bring down their leader, known as "Diablo."
A few side notes: Caine is still having guilt "from blood on his hands" and the opening and closing scenes both have him at church, attempting to help with that spiritual matter. At the second scene we see someone trailing him. Yet another person is going to try to make life tough for Caine - a familiar problem.
A good show and one that gets the new season off on the right foot.
