Griffin Naffly (an excellent Everett Blunck), the 14-year-old protagonist of Nicolas Colia’s surprising charmer Griffin in Summer, holds himself to the highest standards. The aspiring playwright chooses to tackle big themes in his dramas, one- to two-act showcases of marital rows and stalled dreams. An excerpt of his latest work, Regrets of Autumn, didn’t resonate at his school talent show, but Griffin doesn’t really care. He dreams of moving to New York (when he turns 18, of course) and staging his plays at the Roundabout Theatre on Broadway.
While Griffin’s classmates get drunk off hard seltzer and explore adolescent romance, the serious-minded teenager plots regional artistic domination. He partners with his best friend Kara (Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret‘s Abby Ryder Fortson), an aspiring director, to put on his divorce drama about an alcoholic woman and her unfaithful husband. Imagine Ernest Hemingway’s...

Did Rhonj star Margaret Josephs initially plan her exit around Luis Ruelas? It is no secret that she and Teresa Giudice’s husband are not on good terms. More so, she and Teresa do not even get along. Therefore, it appears that she was willing to leave her job based on Luis. How so? Keep reading for more details.
Rhonj Margaret Josephs Planned Exit Around Luis Ruelas?
Margaret Josephs is not in a good position this season of Rhonj. She has watched her good friend, Jackie Goldschneider make amends with Teresa Giudice. Along with that, she felt slighted because she believed that she had not received an advanced copy of Jackie’s book. Jackie has set the record straight on that and explained everyone got the same book. Yet, some cast did want to do press with her so that may have changed things. However, the only people who read...

For the past three years, the American Cinematheque has presented “Bleak Week,” an annual festival devoted to the greatest films ever made about the darkest side of humanity. This year, the festival will not only be unspooling in Los Angeles June 1 – 7 — with special guests including Al Pacino, Lynne Ramsay, Charlie Kaufman, and Karyn Kusama — but will travel to New York for the first time with a week of screenings at the historic Paris Theater starting June 9.
“We are honored to co-present ‘Bleak Week: New York’ in partnership with one of the most beautiful movie palaces in the world,” Cinematheque artistic director Grant Moninger told IndieWire. “This year, over 10,000 people will attend ‘Bleak Week: Year 3’ in Los Angeles, proving that audiences are hungry for such powerful and confrontational cinema. Many people thought they were alone in their desire to explore films with uncomfortable truths, but the truth is that they are part of a large community,...

Several months ago, word leaked out that Maggie Gyllenhaal was set to write and direct a film called The Bride!, a new take on the concept of the 1935 classic The Bride of Frankenstein (watch it Here). Once thought to be set up at the Netflix streaming service, this one is actually happening at Warner Bros., and the studio has set the film for a theatrical release, IMAX screens included, on October 3, 2025. Gyllenhaal has assembled a strong cast for the film that includes Penelope Cruz, Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, and Julianne Hough, with Jessie Buckley as The Bride and Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s Monster. Now Deadline reports that John Magaro (Past Lives) and Jeannie Berlin (You Hurt My Feelings) are also in the cast, but no details have been revealed about the characters they’re playing.

One more video recap to enjoy as a last look back at the movies of 2023. Vietnamese film critic Nguyên Lê has revealed his Cinema Montage 2023 video, featuring a look at his Top 25 Best Films from last year (+ 2 extras). Oppenheimer won the Academy Award for Best Picture a few weeks ago, ending the 2023 awards season. Though that doesn't mean we can't still continue to celebrate all the great movies from last year. His video features many of my personal 2023 favorites as well, including: A Thousand and One, American Fiction, Godzilla: Minus One, Past Lives, Perfect Days, The Promised Land, and The Taste of Things. Plus other underrated gems like Polite Society, Sleep, Monster, Knock at the Cabin, Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, and Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. The video comes in under 3 minutes and is a wonderfully short and sweet reminder of all the beauty cinema offers us every year.

The strike-delayed nominations for the 2024 Writers Guild Awards are out. Check out the list below.
In a flipping of the script this season, the WGA Awards will be held on April 14 – more than a month after the Academy Awards.
As always, the Writers Guild of America has different eligibility requirements than the Movie Academy, so some awards-season favorite scripts are missing from today’s nominations.

Uncut Gems is widely considered a revival movie for Adam Sandler who was struggling with critically panned films. The Safdie brothers, Josh and Benny, directed the anxiety-inducing thriller after their earlier critically acclaimed movie, Good Time. The brothers have since had a fallout and Josh Safdie has been struggling to land a movie while Benny Safdie’s career is thriving. According to reports, Josh has turned to Sandler to save his rocky career.

Reportedly, Sandler and Josh had a few issues going between them, however, the 50 First Dates actor has now given Josh a chance to direct his upcoming Netflix comedy special. The transition from successful movies to a comedy special is reportedly humbling for the director.

Film historians will inevitably look back on 2023 as a year of risk-taking, with filmmakers turning to personal projects backed by major studios. On paper and in hindsight, a movie about the world’s most iconic doll sounds obvious, but it took real balls—or a lack thereof in Ken’s case—for Mattel and Warner Bros. to get behind a deconstructed look at the toy in Greta Gerwig’s existential Barbie. Universal arguably took an even bigger risk, putting their full force behind a three hour movie about the birth of the atomic bomb. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer proved perfect counter-programming to Gerwig’s Barbie, as moviegoers championed the double act into the summer box office unicorn Barbenheimer. Martin Scorsese brought his American Western crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon to the screen after seven years of development. Emerald Fennell debuted her second directorial effort, the darkly imaginative and highly divisive Saltburn.

Barbie led all films with eight wins at the Astra Film Awards on Saturday night, but the biggest winner of all may have been the Hca — an organization of “critics, entertainment journalists, content creators, industry insiders and creatives” formerly known as the Hollywood Critics Association and recently rebranded as the Hollywood Creative Alliance — which appears to have weathered external criticisms and internal dissension, given the sizable talent turnout at its flagship event.

The British Academy has unveiled the results of the first round of voting across all 24 categories for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, with a perhaps unsurprising trio of films at the top.
The cultural phenomenon that was “Barbenheimer” has continued to smash its way into awards season, with both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” named in 15 categories, including best film and director. But joining the two with 15 slots, making it a three-way tie going into the final nominations, is “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Last year, only “All Quiet on the Western Front” earned 15 longlist places, with the film going on to dominate the awards ceremony (and winning best film).
Further down, “Poor Things” was named in 14 categories, “Maestro” in 12 and “Saltburn” in 11, with “Saltburn” missing out on a best film slot. Other U.K. films fared well, with “The Zone of Interest” and “All of Us Strangers” named in 10 categories (including best film), “Wonka” in eight,...

The 2010 San Diego Comic-Con was not the biggest gathering in the event's history, but in terms of its importance as a movie marketing event, this was the freakin' year. The gargantuan, hangar-sized Hall H, christened in 2004 as the home for star-studded studio panels, was packed on both peak days as major stars and filmmakers shilled the next two years' most anticipated genre titles. Friday was all about "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which, with all its major stars present, turned into a shriek-filled presentation as deafening as The Beatles' 1964 appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show."
And then there was Saturday.
Warner Bros. kicked off the Hall H festivities with a buzzy panel that could've matched the "Twilight" delirium had the main Harry Potter trio of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint showed up for the "Deathly Hallows: Part I" preview. The day threatened to descend into chaos when a...

In 2023, I wanted to laugh. Perhaps more than I realized, because when I finally calculated my top-rated films that came out this year, a great portion of my selections turned out to be either straight-up comedies or gripping comedy-dramas. 2023 was the year I embraced funny and moving movie coming-of-age stories probably more than any other, but to me, that genre isn’t only limited to what happens when 11-year-old girls experience their period for the first time or when Elvis Presley decides to take a child bride. For example, Paul Giamatti’s acidic classics teacher experiences something like a middle-aged puberty when he’s forced to care for an abandoned prep school kid during Christmas break in The Holdovers. Kelly Fremon Craig, the writer, director and producer of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, opened up about what inspired her to reach out to Judy Blume to adapt the beloved coming-of-age novel into a film.
During Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles event, Craig said that after The Edge of Seventeen, she was thinking about what was next for her and thought about authors who had impacted her life.
“The first person who came to my mind was Judy Blume,” she said during her film’s panel. “I mean, really, she turned me into a reader and a writer. I started to reread all her books with a thought of adapting them.”
Craig said that during that same time, Blume posted on social media that she had been thinking of optioning her books, but the only one she wouldn’t allow to be adapted was Are You There God?...

Back in January, Fox premiered Alert: Missing Persons Unit, a generic missing-person-of-the-week procedural with a ludicrous serialized plot grafted on top. It was inept and apparently successful enough to be renewed for a second season.
Like Alert: Missing Persons Unit, NBC’s new drama Found is a generic missing-person-of-the-week procedural with a ludicrous serialized plot grafted on top.
Both shows struggle to keep their weekly elements consistently interesting, and neither can figure out how to deliver exposition without having characters recite pieces of their biographies to other members of their crime-solving teams. And those serialized plots? So darned ludicrous.
Unlike Alert: Missing Persons Unit, however, Found is generally… Well, it isn’t good, but it has some underlying points that it wants to make about contemporary law enforcement, even if it rarely sticks with those points long enough to say anything persuasive. It has some characters who are complicated, despite the rampaging exposition.

Lana Del Rey and her frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff paid tribute to his wife Margaret Qualley in a sweet way during a recent performance.
The 38-year-old Norman F-cking Rockwell musician took the stage during All Things Go Festival on Sunday (October 1) and welcomed Jack onstage for a couple of numbers.
They used the opportunity to play their duet “Margaret” for the first time live while Margaret (who inspired the number) watched from the audience.

Included on her new album Did you know there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, “Margaret” is a sweet love song that tracks Jack and Margaret‘s romance.

Jack also joined Lana in a performance of her song “Venice B-tch” while onstage.

Bleachers are back with “Modern Girl,” their first new music since 2021’s Take the Sadness Out of Saturday Night.
In the wide canon of songs about modern life, Jack Antonoff and company sound more cheery than wistful, more David Bowie’s “Modern Love” than, say, Sleater-Kinney’s “Modern Girl.” With raucous saxophones and a scream, the singer/super producer kicks off a party jam about going out and shaking ass. The band has an equally fun time performing the track in its music video, directed by Alex Lockett.
“Modern Girl” brings Antonoff back to his own band after another couple of years of dominating pop music as a producer. Last year, for example, he lent a hand to Taylor Swift’s Midnights, The 1975’s Being Funny in a Foreign Language, and Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. Bleachers even appeared on...

Swift’s speech apparently included a joke about how she always thanks Antonoff at awards shows, but doesn’t get the same love back.

Oscar Race Kicks Off as First Screeners Drop: ‘Air,’ ‘Creed III,’ ‘John Wick 4’ and More (Exclusive)
The Academy Screening Room is now open to all eligible AMPAS members, with the first wave of films uploaded for Oscar consideration for the upcoming awards season.
Nine notable titles are among the films, including Ben Affleck’s “Air” from Amazon Studios, Michael B. Jordan’s “Creed III” from MGM, Kelly Fremon Craig’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” and Chad Stahelski’s “John Wick: Chapter 4,” both from Lionsgate.
The Academy performs a heavy vetting process for each film that chooses to submit for consideration. In 2022, nine movies were among the first added to the members’ portal while in 2020, eight films kicked off that season. Historically, over 300 movies are in the running for best picture consideration. Obviously, more films will be added, and in greater batches, over the next several months. Distributors are the ultimate decision makers on when a movie is placed on the Academy Screening Room for viewing.

Exclusive: WME has signed filmmaker Mark Jenkin (Enys Men) for representation in all areas.
A true multi-hyphenate, who has worked as a director, editor, screenwriter, cinematographer and composer over the course of his career, Jenkin most recently wrote and directed the folk horror film Enys Men, which was picked up for distribution in North America by Neon following its Cannes Directors’ Fortnight world premiere.
Starring Mary Woodvine, Edward Rowe, Flo Crowe and John Woodvine, the experimental feature shot on 16mm follows a wildlife volunteer living on an otherwise uninhabited island off the Cornish coast in 1973, as her daily observations of a rare flower turn into a metaphysical journey that forces her as well as the viewer to question what is real and what is nightmare.
Jenkin previously broke out with his debut feature Bait, which won the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer in...

After “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” suffered the worst second-weekend drop in franchise history, Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is doing the exact opposite, posting the best second-weekend hold of any MCU film since theaters reopened with $60.5 million.
While some other recent Marvel films like “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” have posted better raw totals in their second weekend, “Guardians Vol. 3” has the lowest percentage drop of any Marvel film in the last two years, dropping just 48% from its $118 million opening weekend.
Globally, “Guardians Vol. 3” has already passed the theatrical run of “Quantumania” in less than 10 days, dropping just 40% in overseas weekend grosses with $91.9 million in its second frame to push its worldwide total to $528 million.

Lana Del Rey has shared a new music video for “Candy Necklace,” a collaboration with Jon Batiste from her latest album, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd.
Directed by Rich Lee, the 10-minute, black-and-white clip goes behind the scenes as Del Rey channels past Hollywood starlets including Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Short (better known as the Black Dahlia). “I just don’t know how to not be like a robot,” Del Rey says while wearing a Monroe-like wig. “I just need to shoot, shoot, shoot. It’s not working anymore for me.”
The dialogue flows right into Del Rey’s lyrics: “Sittin’ on the sofa, feelin’ super suicidal/ Hate to say the word, but, baby, hand on the Bible, I do/ Feel like it’s you the one who’s bringin’ me down.” Watch the video below.

Now in her eighties, legendary children’s author Judy Blume only recently became keen to the idea of adapting her books for the screen. But when it came to “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” — arguably Blume’s most famous title — her arms were crossed. She didn’t want any filmmaker to touch it.
“And then I got this letter from Kelly,” Blume told Variety, smiling, in a cover story for March’s Power of Women issue. She’s referring to “The Edge of Seventeen” writer-director Kelly Fremon Craig, to whom she eventually granted the screen rights. Blume was convinced for three reasons: the beauty of the letter that Fremon Craig wrote her, the fact that James L. Brooks mentored Fremon Craig and would serve as a producer on the film, and most importantly, the fact that Fremon Craig was the first person to pursue the rights whose work Blume had previously seen.

Universal/Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has lapped the box office competition, becoming the first animated film of the 2020s to gross $1 billion worldwide while competitors search for vastly smaller opening weekends among niche audiences.
Another strong hold of just a 33% drop has given the film a fourth weekend total of $40 million domestic and $108 million worldwide, pushing the film’s overall totals to $490 million domestic and $1.02 billion global. In the coming week, “Mario” will join “The Incredibles 2” and the 2019 “Lion King” remake as just the third animated film to gross over $500 million domestic. With approximately $130 million more, it will pass the $1.15 billion of “Minions” to become Illumination’s highest grossing film ever.
In second is Warner Bros./New Line’s “Evil Dead Rise,” which is holding respectably with a $12.2 million second weekend to give the horror film a 10-day total of $44.4 million. With a $15 million budget, the...

In North America, Super Mario’s projected weekend gross is $40 million from 4,204 theaters for a domestic tally of $490 million through Sunday. Its projected weekend overseas haul is $68.3 million for a foreign cume of $532.5 million.
The movie has shattered any number of records, including ranking as the highest-grossing animated film in Universal history at the domestic box office after besting Minions: The Rise of Gru ($369.7 million) and the third-highest of any Universal movie behind Jurassic World and E.T. The Extraterrestrial, not adjusted for inflation.

Now that's beyond a spicy meatball. A whole spicy meatloaf. Meatmountain, even. According to a recent report from Variety, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is expected to cross the $1 billion threshold at the global box office by weekend's end. Two weeks ago, we covered the fact that Nintendo, Illumination Entertainment (the animators behind the "Despicable Me" franchise), and Universal Pictures' adaptation of the iconic video game hit $500 million in a single week, becoming the most profitable video game movie of all time. Just a few days after, we brought you the news that it had already become the biggest movie of the year at the box office. And the hits keep coming -- "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" will soon join the semi-exclusive Billion Dollar Club alongside films like "Top Gun: Maverick," "Black Panther," and virtually anything made by James Cameron.
It's possible that next week's release of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3...

Are you there box office? It’s-a me, “Mario.”
Now in its fourth weekend of release, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is still dominating the competition on domestic charts, fending off theatrical newcomers “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” “Sisu” and “Big George Foreman.”
The adaptation of Judy Blume’s best-selling 1970 novel is faring the best among new releases. Opening in 3,343 locations, the coming-of-age film earned $2.25 million on Friday, a figure that includes roughly $600,000 in Thursday previews. That may be enough for the Lionsgate release to project a third place finish for the weekend, but it’s ultimately an underwhelming result for a crowdpleaser based on a literary mainstay that carries a $30 million production budget.
That’s not to say support isn’t there for “Margaret.” The film has earned glowing reviews, landing a 98% approval rating from top critics on aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences are also a big thumbs-up,...

Rachel McAdams as Barbara Simon and Abby Ryder Fortson as Margaret Simon in Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Photo Credit: Dana Hawley Judy Blume was in her early thirties when she wrote her bestselling book, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Now, she’s 85 years old, but that didn’t stop her from taking an active interest in the film adaptation of her book. As one of the film’s producers, she could often be found on the set during shoots, something that didn’t go unnoticed by the film’s stars. Rachel McAdams, who plays Margaret’s mother in the movie, told us that seeing Blume gave her and her castmates additional inspiration and incentive to do their best work. Plot: A young girl finds herself struggling after her family moves away from the city. Based on the popular novel of the same name, by Judy Blume.
Review: My recollection of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret is very vague. I knew Judy Blume and had perhaps read some of her books, but not this tale of a preteen girl. So even with the talent involved, I wasn’t excited about the movie. And then, I sat down for a screening. Perhaps it was the charms of the lovely and vibrant Rachel McAdams as Margaret’s mom? Sure. How about the excellent work of Kathy Bates as Margaret’s loving grandmother? Yes, yes, yes. And then there is the terrific Abby Ryder Fortson as Margaret. Yet, the superstar here is writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig. Let’s dig in and see if Margaret’s prayers get answered.

It seems a little bizarre to talk about how great it is to see Judy Blume back in the public eye again. For some of us she never left. Her books have remained in our hearts and on our shelves, passed down to our kids,...

Director Kelly Fremon Craig is no stranger to awkward teen experiences. Her 2016 feature film “The Edge of Seventeen” leaned heavily on the story of a teenage girl, played by Hailee Steinfeld, coming into her own with all the embarrassment that accompanies that age. But Fremon Craig’s follow-up was a challenge: adapting a well-loved and iconic piece of literature for the big screen, Judy Blume’s 1970 novel “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.”
The story of 11-year-old Margaret Simon (Abby Ryder Fortson) and her blossoming into adulthood has inspired a litany of teen girls for decades, especially as the novel is frank in its discussions of puberty and the m-word: menstruation. For Fremon Craig, before she could even pen word one of the script she had to secure the permission of author Blume, who was notoriously protective of “Margaret” specifically. “I reached out to her and really poured my...
