It’s official: There will no longer be an all Law & Order Thursday night on NBC. For its fifth season, Law & Order: Organized Crime is moving to the streaming service, Peacock. That breaks it up from airing Thursday nights after Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU, which also means that chances are there won’t be many (if any) crossovers. And of course, that leads to the inevitable question of what that means for the will they/won’t they slow burn of Detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) and Svu‘s Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay). Organized Crime was created by Dick Wolf, Matt Olmstead, and Ilene Chaiken. It follows the detectives of the Organized Crime Control Bureau as they take on New York City’s most vicious and violent criminal syndicates. It brought Meloni back to the world of Law & Order in 2021, via a two-part crossover with...

[This story contains spoilers from Prime Video’s film The Idea Of You.]
In the new romantic movie The Idea of You, Nicholas Galitzine — playing Hayes Campbell, a One Direction-like lead singer of a boy band — falls hard for Anne Hathaway’s art gallery owner character, Solène.
Over the course of the new couple’s relationship ups and downs, a watch plays a surprisingly prominent role, becoming a major plot point in the film.
Early on, after Solène — a single mom who’s more than a decade older than Hayes — tells him, “I can’t do this. Because you’re you and I’m me and we just don’t fit,” the lovestruck singer surreptitiously leaves the watch he’s wearing on a table in her house before he departs. “We’ll see,” he says.

After mounting a strike threat that was later averted, Sesame Workshop writers have ratified a new five-year labor contract that their union president is touting as “groundbreaking.”
Twenty-eight out of the group of 35 workers voted to support a tentative deal reached on April 19, while the remaining seven abstained from voting. The Writers Guild of America East and West, which represent the workers, who write shows including Sesame Street, Helpsters and The Not Too Late Show With Elmo, announced the results on Friday.
The new agreement expands work that is covered under the union contract to include writing for all projects distributed on SVOD platforms, educational programs, new media videos that are shared on TikTok and YouTube and animated titles.
WGA East president Lisa Takeuchi Cullen said in a statement that the new contract contains “groundbreaking protections.” She added, “Make no mistake — these historic gains mark an important step in organizing animation.

When Kevin Daniels got a call from his agent’s mom that she’d pitched him for the lead role in a film she was producing, it didn’t take much for him to say “yes.”
“We had a zoom meeting and we kind of laughed and told some jokes and they were like, ‘Hey, you want to come down to Savannah?’ and I was like, ‘I like Savannah. That sounds nice,’” Daniels tells The Hollywood Reporter.
The film was Not Another Church Movie, a spoof comedy of Tyler Perry’s Madea series, written, directed and produced by Johnny Mack (Real Husbands of Hollywood), which is set to hit theaters on May 10. In it, Daniels, stars as the hardworking Taylor Pherry, a man given a mission directly from God (Jamie Foxx) to write a story about his dysfunctional family to save billionaire talk show host Hoprah Windfall’s plummeting TV ratings.

There’s a strong chance that FX’s critical darling Shōgun will return for a second season.
Hiroyuki Sanada has signed what sources say is an “if-come” deal that would see the series star and producer return, should FX successfully jump through the multiple hoops required for a second season of the limited series. That means if FX can sort things out behind the scenes and formally greenlight a second season, Sanada would return to the franchise.
Sources stress there are other extenuating circumstances that FX and CEO John Landgraf are attempting to sort through to pave the way for a renewal. Reps for FX declined comment.
Shōgun, billed as a limited series, ranks as the most expensive scripted show FX has done in its history. The network spent years developing the series, which is based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name. It’s the second stab at Shōgun,...

Peak TV may be over, but even in a time of industrywide contraction, another era is forging ahead unabated: Welcome to Peak Franchise TV.

On the broadcast networks alone, the 2023-24 season will feature 21 scripted series that are part of a franchise, defined as a show that has spun off another series set in the same world or is itself a spinoff.

Beach Boys co-founder and virtuoso songwriter-producer Brian Wilson was placed under a conservatorship this week, following a petition from his family after his wife, Melinda Ledbetter, died in January.
Wilson, 81, who was diagnosed with a “major neurocognitive disorder,” was placed under the conservatorship at a Tuesday hearing overseen by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gus T. May. The hearing was the culmination of a series of proceedings initiated by Wilson’s family and friends after Ledbetter, who famously extracted Wilson’s affairs from his former psychologist via a court-ordered separation and then became his manager, died at their Beverly Hills home on Jan. 30.
“I find from clear and convincing evidence that a conservatorship of the person is necessary,” May said at Thursday’s hearing, according to the minutes viewed by The Hollywood Reporter.

The Guardians of the Galaxy could’ve looked a little different.
In an upcoming episode of The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast, Joel Edgerton revealed that he auditioned for the role of Star-Lord, which eventually went to Chris Pratt, in James Gunn’s Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise.
“I, unlike Chris, didn’t quite sort of understand the tone of it the way he did and the way that those guys did,” Edgerton said on the show. “And I wasn’t really sure how I could be a part of that tone. And I truly think that the world is a much better place that I’m not Star-Lord, even if I had the opportunity or I did a good enough audition because it is the way it’s meant to be.”

Comedian and actor Nick Offerman kicked off his Thursday night show at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre with a cheeky song about he was going to “keep it PG-13” for the night. While the sentiment didn’t last too long, the songs sure did.
The show, titled Nick Offerman and Friends vs Climate Crisis, was part of the Netflix is a Joke Fest that has taken over Los Angeles for the last week, and was put on in support of environmental non-profit Natural Resources Defense Council (Nrdc).
A known outdoorsman, Offerman told the crowd he was a “huge fan” of the organization before jumping into his opening song, but not before offering the non-profit a quick suggestion for what the night’s funds should be used towards. “I want to hope they’ll use some of the proceeds from tonight to think tank a flashier name,” Offerman joked with audience.

When USC professor and hip-hop scholar Todd Boyd remembers hearing Tupac Shakur’s scathing diss track “Hit ‘Em Up,” he knew one thing: “This is not going to end well.”
The West Coast anthem was released in June 1996 and Shakur viciously took aim at his East Coast rivals, including the Notorious B.I.G. with claims — through strikingly chosen words — that he slept with Biggie’s wife, R&b singer Faith Evans.
The rap war escalated to new heights, and three months later Shakur was shot to death in Las Vegas, with some wondering (though apparently incorrectly) whether the beef had anything to with it. And a few months after that, Biggie was shot dead in Los Angeles though his killer never apprehended.
Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s current rap beef has Boyd reflecting on the past.

ABC is bringing back a big chunk of its unscripted shows for the 2024-25 TV season.
The network has renewed seven series — American Idol, The Bachelor, Celebrity Jeopardy!, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, Dancing With the Stars, Shark Tank and the ABC News-produced What Would You Do? — for next season. They join The Golden Bachelorette, a spinoff of last fall’s breakout The Golden Bachelor, on the 2024-25 slate. (The Bachelorette is also set for its usual summer run.)
Notably missing from the list of pickups is America’s Funniest Home Videos, ABC’s longest-running entertainment series. A decision hasn’t been made yet on a possible 35th season for the show.
American Idol will air its eighth season on ABC (and 23rd overall) in 2024-25, although it will do so without judge Katy Perry, who is leaving at the end of the current season. Dancing With the Stars (season 33), The Bachelor...

The Conners will get one final run on ABC.
The network has picked up a seventh season of the comedy, which will be its last on the network. It’s also set to be the shortest of any of the show’s seasons, with an episode count likely in the single digits. The shortest previous season of The Conners was its first, which ran 11 episodes; this year’s strikes-shortened edition has 13. The series as a whole will have 106 episodes to its credit after the May 22 season finale.
The Conners premiered in fall 2018, a few months after ABC canceled its highly rated Roseanne revival following racist remarks by star Roseanne Barr. ABC’s Not Dead Yet is no longer living up to its title.
The network has canceled the comedy, which stars Gina Rodriguez, after two seasons. Not Dead Yet drew the smallest audience of ABC’s three half-hour comedies this season, averaging about 3.2 million viewers in Nielsen’s seven-day ratings (which don’t include streaming).
The cancellation leaves ABC with just two comedies on its 2024-25 schedule for the moment — Abbott Elementary, which is going into its fourth season, and The Conners, which is ending with its seventh. The network also has a pair of comedy pilots starring Tim Allen (Shifting Gears) and Ty Burrell (Forgive & Forget) but likely won’t make decisions on either one until after next week’s upfronts.
Created by David Windsor and Casey Johnson, Not Dead Yet stars Rodriguez as Nell Serrano, who takes a job as an obituary writer after her life falls apart.

[This story contains spoilers for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.]
Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is not just an ape story like the Caesar-led Apes trilogy of the 2010s. Kingdom is just as much a human story, and Freya Allan’s Mae is the human in that equation. Centuries after Caesar’s (Andy Serkis) death, Mae first crosses paths with Owen Teague’s young chimpanzee, Noa, as she attempts to survive in the wilderness alone. However, she inadvertently leads Proximus Caesar’s (Kevin Durand) coastal clan of hostile apes to Noa’s village, and the communal home of his Eagle Clan is subsequently destroyed, while many of his fellow apes and family members are either slaughtered or abducted.
Noa narrowly survives the attack and makes the trek to the coast in order to rescue his loved ones, before encountering a wise orangutan named Raka (Peter Macon). Together, they...

If Warner Bros.’ newly announced The Lord of the Rings movie idea The Hunt for Gollum sounded a bit like fan fiction, that’s because it already is.

Beef creator Lee Sung Jin says he’s enjoying the opportunities his Emmy-winning Netflix series has brought him — including his latest project: directing a music video for BTS superstar Rm.
Lee collaborated with Rm on “Come Back to Me,” a beautifully shot six-minute music video that feels like a short film. The song, which begins with an acoustic vibe and includes whistle sounds and guitar riffs, was released Friday and is a departure for the BTS member. The song appears on his upcoming sophomore solo album, Right Place, Wrong Person, out May 24.
