For the next solid three years, the studio has multiple sequel projects slated to drop — ranging anywhere between the second and fifth film of a franchise. While it can be nice to revisit fan-favorite universes like ‘Avatar’ and ‘Toy Story,’ there’s also a major demand for Disney to return to their original storytelling roots. Walt Disney himself was incredibly opposed to sequels, saying he always had...

In the past few years, Disney projects haven’t had the best box-office performances. In these difficult times, many fans have turned to the CEO of the company, Bob Iger, seeking answers about why one of the biggest companies of all time is having such a grand, yet difficult-to-watch, fall from grace.
Moana (2016)
Their wishes seem to have come true, as the executive has recently spoken about the company’s new strategies. He revealed that they would be taking an approach that did not favor sequels. This could be very bad news for Dwayne Johnson’s Moana.

“The reason I’m successful is because I’m passing, straight up,” said producer Naomi Scott, who is Chamorro (Indigenous people of the Mariana Islands), during the Pasifika Entertainment Advancement Komiti (Peak)’s second annual Peak Conversations panel. It was held on the first day of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month last Wednesday night.
“I’m married to a white man who’s famous. I don’t want to sugarcoat it,” added Scott, who is married to actor Adam Scott. “But now that I’m here, I have a responsibility to keep the door open.”
The experience of Pasifika women in Hollywood was at the center of the discussion in West Hollywood, created to celebrate Pacific Islander filmmaking, entertainment and community.
Scott was joined on the panel by Moana and Mean Girls star Auli’i Cravalho and RuPaul‘s Drag Race season 15 winner Sasha Colby, who are both Hawaiian. “There’s...

Released back in 2016, Moana was a proper hit for Disney and became one of the company’s most beloved new movies. Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson did an amazing job voicing Moana and Maui, respectively, which is why the announcement of a sequel did not really surprise us. And while we know that the sequel is coming out on November 27, 2024, Disney has been scarce when it comes to footage from the upcoming sequel, so we don’t really have much for you.
But, those who were lucky enough to attend this year’s CinemaCon got the opportunity to see the first teaser for Moana 2. This exclusive video was shown only to CinemaCon attendees and while it has not been released online, although we assume it is going to be released relatively soon, we know that it showed us and we are going to reveal this to you here.

What can Disney say to cinema owners except “you’re welcome“? After all, the studio is revisiting the island of Montunui, where “Moana” takes place, a lot sooner than movie theaters were expecting.
Earlier this year, the studio announced a surprise sequel to the 2016 animated feature for release on Nov. 27. The follow-up was initially commissioned as a television series for Disney+ but it was retooled into a feature film after executives were reportedly impressed by the footage.
Disney shared the first look at the scenes that wowed those Magic Kingdom creatives during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on Thursday. In the music-heavy clip, Moana returns to her home island of Montunui and is greeted with a hero’s welcome. The clip offered a taste of one new song, which appears to be about the wayfinding natives eager to be “back to who we’re meant to be.” Although the...

Two months after Disney CEO Bob Iger’s surprise announcement that Moana 2 was in the works at the studio and scheduled to hit theaters Nov. 27, the animated sequel took center stage at CinemaCon.
Disney debuted an exclusive sneak peek of footage of the David Derrick Jr.-directed film in front of theater owners with the help of its superstar voice talent, Dwayne Johnson. He arrived to the stage after a mini-performance from Polynesian dancers. Johnson is back for the new installment alongside actors from the original, including Auli’i Cravalho and others.
“As we say on the island, aloha,” Johnson said, dressed for the occasion in trousers and a white tank top. “Playing the character of Maui is one of the most life-changing life experiences for me and life changing roles.”
He added that the character is more meaningful to him than just a gig. “It’s my culture, you...

The Pasifika Entertainment Advancement Komiti (Peak) announced their Peak Conversations panel, sponsored by Amazon MGM Studios, will take place in Los Angeles on May 1.
The first celebration of Pasifika women in Hollywood will feature and highlight the achievements Moana and Mean Girls actress Auli’i Cravalho, RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Sasha Colby, and Great Scott Productions founder Naomi Scott with moderation by Moana 2, and Thai Cave Rescue screenwriter Dana Ledoux Miller. The talanoa (or discussion) will focus on issues specific to Pasifika women and their journeys in the entertainment industry.
“May is Aapi Heritage Month yet you’ll find Pasifika (or Pacific Islander) people are rarely prioritized and often erased in celebrations despite us being named in them. What have we here? It's a sparkly, shiny... new look at Disney's upcoming surprise sequel Moana 2! Yes, during the House of Mouse's 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders yesterday, the company shared some more info on the hotly anticipated follow-up to their smash-hit 2016 animated movie musical. Make way, make way — new image inbound. Check it out above.
Yes, this may be just a single frame from Disney's seafaring sequel, but there's already plenty to catch the eye here. Moana looks older and more confident here, her oar (rocking Maui's fish hook and heart engraving) leading the way. And the animation looks luscious — consider the hair texture and lighting, the oak and the seas. And also – holy mother of Tamatoa, is that a sea monster behind her? It certainly looks like it, tentacles, beady blue eyes and all.
And sea monster sightings certainly track with the synopsis The Walt Disney Company...

Shortly after denying Nelson Peltz a seat on the Disney board, the House of Mouse is sharing first looks at two of their upcoming films, Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King. The Hollywood Handle was the first to share the Mufasa image, which Disney debuted as part of the studio’s 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders. The picture for Mufasa: The Lion King depicts a young Mufasa standing at the edge of a cliff while staring out at a desaturated Pride Land. The Barry Jenkins-directed sequel to Jon Favreau’s 2019 live-action hybrid focuses on Simba, having become king of the Pride Lands, and is determined for his cub to follow in his paw prints while the origins of his late father Mufasa are explored.

It's a testament to Disney's branding that mainstream audiences don't necessarily know who directed or starred in some of their better-known movies. Although many have seen the studio's 1950 animated feature "Cinderella," most audiences wouldn't be able to tell you that Ilene Woods played the title character, or that Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi directed the film. Disney's "Aladdin" changed that with the casting of Robin Williams as the Genie. And the trend of hiring known screen celebrities, often not voice actors, to sell an animated feature to a broad audience went to a whole other level in the wake of DreamWorks' "Shrek." The advent of the internet also helped certain actresses become known among Disney fans. Nowadays, many adults know the names of the actresses who played characters like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Ariel the Mermaid.

Exclusive: Auli’i Cravalho is coming back to reprise the voice of Moana in Moana 2.
We last heard that she was in talks, however it’s clear that she was bound to reteam with Dwayne Johnson, who clearly is coming back as demigod Maui.
In a CNBC interview ahead of Disney’s last earnings call, CEO Bob Iger sprung the news that Moana 2 was opening of November 27, during the Thanksgiving stretch. Disney essentially was over the moon with a Moana Disney+ series that it turned into a big-screen movie.
The sequel is directed by Dave Derrick Jr., with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.

Dwayne Johnson’s career in both Hollywood as well as WWE seems to be going as on point as ever, and now he has yet another remarkable movie project on his plate. But what has set another exciting edge to this are the newly fetched reports that Johnson just might finally reunite with Emily Blunt for this film. Zoe Lister-Jones was proud to attend Sunday’s Spirit Awards, and the reason is twofold. First, the multihyphenate talent turned up in Santa Monica to support a pair of nominations for Roku’s Slip, the original series she created, starred in and executive produced alongside a team that includes Dakota Johnson. Reason No. 2: She did so by walking into the event hand-in-hand with a new love in her life.
When the subject of her plus-one came up during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 41-year-old Lister-Jones responded with a big reveal: “I’m here, I’m queer, I have some fear but I’m working through it.” Lister-Jones is in a new relationship with a fellow filmmaker, Sammi Cohen, who most recently directed Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, the teen comedy starring Adam Sandler and family including wife Jackie and their daughters Sadie and Sunny.

The 2024 Mean Girls remake faced a torrent of criticism since the trailer dropped in November 2023. Now that it finally hit theaters last month, it hasn’t fared very well.
The new Mean Girls movie is a musical remake, not just a regular one. It’s based on the 2018 Broadway musical, which itself was based on the 2004 film. The movie introduces a new generation of the Plastics to audiences.
Mean Girls
Although the remake failed to capture the original essence of the first flick—Tina Fey strived to make this adaptation of Mean Girls fun, by bringing beloved characters to the screen with a whole new generation.
The Sisters’ star is one of the influential female voices in the industry. With her quirky, comic-genius glory and wit, it’s no wonder why many love her.
That’s why even Auliʻi Cravalho stepped forward to defend her and had something to say to Mean Girls detractors.

One mega big piece of information that Disney CEO Bob Iger forgot to mention in his announcement of Moana 2 earlier this week was whether Dwayne Johnson was coming back to reprise his iconic role as the demigod Maui. Deadline has learned that the action star in fact is in talks, and it’s looking good. And as Maui says, “You’re welcome.”
The jury is still out on whether Auli’i Cravalho comes back as the voice of Moana. We hear that the actress is in talks, but they aren’t as close as Johnson’s. Cravalho already said in May on social that she won’t be reprising Moana in the live-action version of the movie.
“I’m truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent, to honor our incredible Pacific people’s cultures and communities that help inspire her story. And I...

Make way! Make way! Yes, after sailing into audiences' hearts back in 2016, Moana will return. And sooner than you think. Even with the planned live-action version still in the works, Disney has opted to turn what had been developed as a series set in the world of the film into an animated sequel — and it'll be out later this year.
In an interview ahead of an investors' call, where Disney took the chance to also send word of Zootopia 2 (likely to once more be called Zootropolis 2 here because of that pesky copyright conflict with a European zoo) landing in 2025 and the imminent arrival of the T-Swift concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (now with five extra songs and the added subtitle Taylor's Version) at its exclusive streaming home of Disney+ on 15 March, company boss Bob Iger confirmed the upgrade for Moana: The Series.

See the line where the sky meets the sea? It calls on Disney to bring '90s nostalgia back — specifically nostalgia for quickly-made sequels to their popular movies. After announcing plans to have as many "Frozen" movies as there are seasons in the year, the 100-year-old studio that had a pretty rough 2023 decided the solution to all its problems lies in announcing "Moana 2," which not only got a surprise announcement, but a surprise teaser trailer and a surprise 2024 release date. Talk about efficiency!
This move feels like Disney turning what would have been a cheap direct-to-vhs movie back in the '90s and '00s and releasing it in theaters with the hope of it making a billion dollars. According to Variety, the movie was originally planned as a TV series, before the company decided to produce a second film instead. In a press release, Bob Iger said "Moana remains...
