Kathleen Hanna is celebrating her upcoming memoir Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk with a run of book tour dates, scheduled for May 2024.

For an unfinished novel, Edith Wharton's 1938 tome The Buccaneers certainly has enjoyed a healthy life of adaptations through the years since it arrived posthumously. The latest to take a crack is actor/writer Katherine Jakeways, who has overseen this new show version for Apple TV+, and given it a post-modern spin (not just around the dance floor). See the trailer below…
Girls with money, men with power. New money, old secrets. A group of fun-loving young American girls explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition. Sent to secure husbands and titles, the buccaneers’ hearts are set on much more than that, and saying, “I do” is just the beginning…

Apple TV+ is channeling Bridgerton and The Sex Lives of College Girls in the first trailer for its new drama series The Buccaneers, and we're definitely interested in what comes next.
The series has a target audience, and running the trailer to the sound of Olivia Rodrigo's "All-American B----" is a choice.
The series blends 1870s English aristocracy with a modern soundtrack produced by Stella Mozgawa (of the band Warpaint) and packed with songs from today's top female performers that include Taylor Swift, Boygenius, Maggie Rogers, Bikini Kill, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Angel Olsen, Brandi Carlile and more.
Interestingly, original music from Folick, Lucius, Alison Mosshart, Warpaint, Gracie Abrams, Sharon Van Etten, Bully, Danielle Ponder, and more are thrown in for good measure.

Rock royalty Joan Jett joined legendary punks Bikini Kill onstage Tuesday night, for a live performance of their anthemic 1993 single, “Rebel Girl.” Set in Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre, it was the band’s seventh stop on their prodigious reunion tour.

Amy Poehler is going to rock out in her next film, planning to direct “Moxie,” a story about a teenager who discovers the feminist punk rock movement Riot Grrrl and leads a feminist revolution at her high school, an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.
Poehler will direct the film for Netflix, which will be both her second directed-feature and also her second for Netflix following “Wine Country,” which is set to debut on the streamer this May.
Tamara Chestna wrote the screenplay based on Jennifer Mathieu’s novel of the same name. Poehler’s banner Paper Kite acquired the novel last year.
“Moxie” tells the story of Viv Carter, a 16-year-old girl fed up with sexist dress codes, hallway harassment and gross comments from guys and the belief that the football team can do no wrong.

Nearly three decades after they formed, thanks to some hard-drive wizardry and new sessions, they have a debut full-length that doubles as a reminder of how metal-edged punk could get. Johnston’s uncompromising wail is ferocious even when it’s in restrained mode; her brother Dannie’s grimy guitars, Mindy Mapp’s thudding bass,...

Sue Jeiven is a tiny, ebullient woman. That’s probably the first thing you notice about her. She radiates energy, excitement — all of those “e” words. Actually, the tattoos are the first thing you notice about her. She’s quite literally covered; all the standard places, sure, but also her fingers, palms and face — three tiny dots in a triangle by her right eye. It’s likely she’s also wearing Mr. T amounts of gold chains and some leopard print. An astoundingly talented tattoo artist, Sue works at East River Tattoo in Brooklyn and regularly makes the list of...

"The Punk Singer" (2013)Certain to satisfy feminists, music fans and moshers alike, "The Punk Singer" gives the seminal frontwoman of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre her day, chronicling the revolutionary misfit Kathleen Hanna whose musical projects, poetry and activism helped to kickstart the Riot Grrrl movement. Helmed by first-time feature director Sini Anderson, the film features interviews with many popular musicians and feminist figures, including Kim Gordon and Tavi Gevinson, and follows Hanna's career from her beginnings as a spoken word poet to full-blown rock star. From her work with Le Tigre and Bikini Kill to her solo project Julie Ruin, "The Punk Singer" provides an intimate look at Hanna's troubled childhood and medical complications amongst the start of the Riot Grrrl movement. Featuring healthy doses of live performance footage from the vocal powerhouse and insight into Hanna's life beyond her musical works, "The Punk Singer" is an...

In an essay for Vulture, Anika Pyle, front woman of the Brooklyn band Chumped, called 2014 “the year that women tore down the punk-boy clubhouse and erected a big middle finger in its place.” She’s not wrong. 2014 felt like a banner year for women in punk, a genre that has always prided itself on progressive politics and open-mindedness but has often felt closed off to female musicians. Prominent exceptions to the rule like Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney bear a strange burden; they’re the token names trotted out when a music critic has to make sense of a female-led punk band — whether they sound anything like those bands or not. So what’s exciting about the current crop of female-driven punk bands is not just their abundance but the sheer sonic diversity. From the primal fury of White Lung to the singsongy sass of Slutever to the artful experimentations of...

In this weekend’s specialty box-office debuts, IFC Films hopes to replicate the critical and commercial success of Michael Winterbottom’s first amusing little travelogue/talker of a feature, The Trip, with a semi-sequel, The Trip To Italy. The second Trip again stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon; the entertainingly garrulous pair on yet another jaunt across restaurants, countryside and philosophy. The latest Trip will bow in NYC and La this weekend after a successful Australian run earlier this summer (or their winter).
Frank, a British-Irish-American drama from Magnolia Pictures featuring Michael Fassbender that had runs at Sundance and SXSW, bows in only one U.S. theater this weekend. Frank centers on an eccentric band, giving Fassy fans a chance to hear the Oscar-nominated actor sing, albeit from behind a mask (he’s not bad, actually).
Other notable new films include Philippe Garrel‘s Jealousy, which Distrib Films will expand...

★★★★☆"I'm gonna finish my fuckin' symphony." That powerful phrase comes up as Kathleen Hanna recalls a musician friend's defiant reaction to a hideous assault in college. It's also a perfect encapsulation of the spirit of The Punk Singer (2013), Sini Anderson's scrappy, vital documentary on Hanna, the fiery frontwoman of seminal nineties punk band Bikini Kill and, later, Le Tigre. The film positions Hanna as a countercultural linchpin, around whom a new artistic movement formed. Through Anderson's lenses, the singer becomes the urtext of riot grrrl; a perfect embodiment of the faction's rough Diy aesthetics and propulsive feminist rhetoric. Anderson brilliantly captures this delicate balance of disparate drives.

★★★★☆Sini Anderson's The Punk Singer (2013) uncovers the true origins of nineties 'girl power' and the birth of the Riot grrl movement. Kathleen Hanna, co-founder of the movement and frontman of Bikini Kill is the titular singer with the film documenting her career from start to a surprisingly abrupt finish in 2005 when Hanna and her then band, Le Tigre's radio silence made the loudest noise with her fans. Using vintage performance footage and interviews with band members, family, friends and fans, the film sets out to discover the cause that quietly shut the vociferous scream queen down. Hanna's rapid evolution from ambitious spoken word artist to punk icon is told through a series of stories from her youth.

I can’t believe I’d never heard of Kathleen Hanna before, but then again, punk music was never my thing. Now, she’s my new hero. The Punk Singer, the first feature from documentarian Sini Anderson, is a fantastic introduction to Hanna and her groundbreaking work in music, feminism, and all-around kickass awesomeness in which, it seems, she simply cannot help but be a leader and an inspiration even beyond her circle of enthusiastic fans. In the late 1980s in the Pacific Northwest, she smashed frustrating barriers on the pre-grunge punk scene with her band Bikini Kill, which not only raged in their music against all the crap...

"I'm just going to try a bunch of shit on," Carrie Brownstein says. On an icy February afternoon in Manhattan, the co-star of IFC's sketch-comedy series Portlandia has just ducked into a brightly lit Opening Ceremony boutique in search of an outfit for a New York Fashion Week event that night. "I like to go to other cities because I can dress up," she says, eyeing a stylish black blazer with blue and white checks. "I live in a city where fleece is considered an appropriate fabric for any event.

The Punk Singer
Directed by Sini Anderson
USA, 2013
There are an abundance of fascinating stories to be told in the new documentary The Punk Singer: the evolution of feminist punk rock in the 1990s, the inspiration that Bikini Kill lead singer Kathleen Hanna created among her fellow musicians as well as young women looking up to her as a role model, and the dramatic shift in Hanna’s life once she was diagnosed with late-stage Lyme disease. This should be a boon to the film—better to have too many stories to tell in a feature documentary than not enough—but ends up making the venture mildly frustrating for not being able to deeply explore all potential avenues.
Hanna’s career, as detailed by director Sini Anderson, has spanned a couple of decades and many generational shifts. Though hers may not be a household name, she’s arguably a...

1991 was the year punk broke, hurtling Sonic Youth, Nirvana and their contemporaries into the mainstream, but unless you were plugged into the still-vibrant underground—going to house shows, basement gigs or concerts in unlikely venues like bowling alleys—you likely didn't know about Bikini Kill. That same year, the Olympia, Washington-based quartet issued their first Ep, Revolution Girl Style Now!, and it was a shot to the heart of a scene that perhaps wasn't aware it needed waking up. Fronted by Kathleen Hanna, the outspoken group may not have been the most technically proficient musicians or boasted the slickest production, but they were vital in a way few groups could claim. They were about to become the reluctant torch-bearers of a revolution, with Kathleen Hanna at the center of the storm. To understand the world that Bikini Kill were coming into, one has to take the early '90s into context.

For many, Kathleen Hanna — frontwoman for the bands Bikini Kill and later Le Tigre — was the defining protopunk, feminist icon of the Clinton and W. eras. A centrifugal force whose career spans the entire era in which the genre folks used to call Alternative Rock grew and waned in popularity, this riot grrrl mysteriously left the public eye in the mid aughts without any explanation. In The Punk Singer directed by Sini Anderson, a friend of Ms. Hanna’s, and produced by the music video auteur and CB4 director Tamra Davis, she reemerges from the shadows of semi-retirement. The age of the riot grrrls entered like a screaming woman and exited like a cooing teen. The woman was Kathleen Hanna, the Bikini Kill frontwoman who kicked boys out of her mosh pits and insisted, "I'm not going to sit around and be peace and love with somebody's boot on my neck." The teen was Britney Spears, who famously invited her baby to hit her one more time. And the eight years between their eras — 1991 to 1999 — were a glorious time in modern music history for girls who rallied behind Hanna as she dared them to start a revolution.
Still, Hanna and Spears had a few things in common: kiddie barrettes, baby tees, little girl skirts. But as Sini Anderson, director of the Dr. Martens-stomping doc The Punk Singer, points out, third-wave feminists like Hann...

In 1990, Kathleen Hanna, inspired by third-wave feminism and outraged by the violence against women she was witnessing, started the punk band Bikini Kill. Insisting their shows be a safe space for female fans to rock out, Hanna famously asked the boys to move to the back and invited the girls up front near the stage. Bikini Kill were true trailblazers who inspired a great deal of the music that sprang out of the Pacific Northwest in the 1990s, including fellow Olympia, Washington, rockers like Sleater-Kinney and Hanna’s close friend Kurt Cobain. Making its debut in limited theatrical release and VOD on Friday, November 29 is "The Punk Singer," Sini Anderson's film about riot grrrl legend Kathleen Hanna, the front woman of Bikini Kill who went on to make music with Le Tigre and her current band The Julie Ruin. In the nineties, Bikini Kill was one of the brightest stars in the riot grrrl movement, known for their fuck you attitude, vibrant self-made media culture, and criticism of the macho culture that surrounded them. As a film, "The Punk Singer" goes to great lengths to contextualize the movement Hanna was a part of, the influence it had on music and women's culture then and today, and brings us up to date to Kathleen's contemporary every day concerns, including her battle with Lyme Disease. We spoke to Hanna and Anderson in separate interviews about the film. First up, Kathleen Hanna: The...
