John Musker has hit out at Disney for prioritising politics over plot in their live-action remakes. The 70-year-old animator has helmed classic movies such as 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Aladdin' for the studio and has urged film chiefs to put "compelling stories and characters" before political agendas in their current work.John told the Spanish publication El Pais: "We weren't trying to be woke, although I understand the criticism."The classic Disney films didn't start out trying to have a message. They wanted you to get involved in the characters and the story and the world, and I think that's still the heart of it."You don't have to exclude agendas, but you have to first create characters who you sympathise with and who are compelling."I think they need to do a course correction a bit in terms of putting the message secondary, behind entertainment and compelling story and engaging characters.

Steven Spielberg’s 1985 classic that took home 11 Oscar nominations is by no means a feat of mere auteurist filmmaking but one showing exceptional skill and brilliance. Behind the camera, there is none other than Spielberg, even though his inspiration might often come from borrowed sources. As such, the adaptation of Alice Walkerʼs Pulitzer Prize-winning 1982 novel, The Color Purple, couldnʼt have been in better hands than the surgically gifted ones of the venerated director.

After much deliberation and struggle, the musical drama produced by Spielberg and Oprah made it onto the screens in 2023 to widespread acclaim. However, the story behind its production is an award-worthy tale in itself.

Taking cues from The Cosby Show’s iconic spinoff A Different World but updated for some 30 years later, Grown-ish, the Black-ish spawn premiered on Freeform in January 2018 by following Yara Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson, Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) firstborn, to college. Similar to its predecessor, Grown-ish tackled many controversial topics, including university investment in the prison system, drug use, pre-nil exploitation of college athletes, sex, the value of college and more, but did so with a fresh voice and perspective.
Zoey’s college world included her competing love interests — woke Black campus activist Aaron (Trevor Jackson) and ultimate hipster Luca (Luka Sabbat) — as well as Latina Republican Ana (Francia Raìsa), Jewish rebel Nomi (Emily Arlook), first-generation Indian American and all-around hustler Vivek (Jordan Buhat), Olympic-bound South Los Angeles track stars Jazz and Sky (sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey, who perform the show’s theme song) and later,...

The Little Mermaid is one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved fairytales. The story has been made popular by Disney’s 1989 animated feature, which altered a lot of the original story, and which also received a live-action remake in 2023, starring Halle Bailey. But, it seems that this was not the final live-action adaptation of the story, as Msr Media International is bringing us a live-action horror adaptation of Andersen’s story, which recently received its first trailer and poster.
We’re not sure that anyone wanted this, but the horrible slasher Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey opened the door for such endeavors, and based on the information we have, we’re in for a series of (probably bad) low-budget horror adaptations of beloved children’s tales that will satisfy only those with the strongest of stomachs and lowest of expectations.

You might think “The Line” is simply a film about illuminating the bad behavior of college fraternities and their dangerous hazing practices. You’d be wrong. Yes, that is the subject matter in question, but in the hands of first-time feature director Ethan Berger it’s a richly drawn, slow-burn character study that suddenly becomes a breathless thriller.
There’s a pivotal scene that occurs almost two-thirds of the way into the movie that marks the moment that “The Line” becomes one of the great suspense movies in some time. It’s a hazing scene in which the worst possible traits of Greek Life pledging are actually just a cover for a battle of wills between two guys who hate each other: Frat brother Mitch (Bo Mitchell) and pledge Gettys (Austin Abrams). Mitch is all “Animal House” bluster but deeply insecure — with a wealthy businessman father played by an imposing...

Harvard’s South Asian Person of The Year, Avantika Vandanapu, has been in the news lately and, surprisingly, not on a positive note. The Mean Girls star has been facing major backlash after rumor mills churned out news of her screen testing for the role of Rapunzel opposite Milo Manheim in the Disney live-action remake of the movie Tangled. We witnessed a similar uproar in 2023 over the casting of Halle Bailey in The Little Mermaid live-action remake and, more recently, Rachel Ziegler’s casting in the Snow White live-action. Vandanapu is being subject to racist trolling in her Instagram comments section,

Here it is! Our first look at Disney Junior’s Ariel, the latest adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
Not too long ago, some stills from the series appeared online, but I thought the show had been scrapped. Boy, was I wrong… It’s coming to Disney Junior, Disney Junior on Demand, and Disney Now.
Based on the newly released teaser trailer, this show makes several interesting artistic choices. Some characters look familiar, while others look like they were recycled from other Disney Junior shows.
Sebastian’s horrific, ultra-realistic design from the 2023 film is gone. Instead, Disney Junior has decided, in this instance only, that his classic look is better. Of course. It makes sense.
But what of the rest of the cast? Flounder? King Triton? Ursula?

The season of the very first sign of the zodiac is here, and that’s exactly why being a leader comes so easy for Aries folks.
And that’s no joke, Aries really don’t know what else to be but a boss, CEO or innovator, because they’d rather play by their own rules. They march to the beat of their own drum and rarely ever need anyone to play backup instrumentals. Their charm, playful personality and great sense of humor make up for their impulsiveness and sometimes hot-temper, and there’s absolutely no other sign who will keep it all the way real with you like an Aries does, even if it’s something you don’t want to hear. They tell it like it is, as dishonesty goes against their entire m.o.

“Civil War,” the A24 action-thriller about a violently divided United States, isn’t offering up much in the way of escapism. Though it takes place in the dystopian future, it not-so-subtly feeds into the blue-state/red-state rift that’s sure to widen as the race for the White House heats up.

At this year’s NAACP Awards, Usher proved that 2024 is his year. The entertainer, who played the Super Bowl halftime show just last month, took home top honors at the ceremony. He even walked into the ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium on a high note, having picked up awards for Outstanding Male Artist and Outstanding Soul/R&b song in pre-telecast presentations.
His success continued throughout the ceremony, where Oprah Winfrey presented him with the Entertainer of the Year Award. He beat out Halle Bailey, Fantasia Barrino, Coleman Domingo, and Keke Palmer for the prize.
“I guess all great things start from Oprah Winfrey. When I was a kid, I made my start on your show,” Usher said, per BET. “I want to thank each and every person who believed in me.”
