A few weeks ago, in the build-up to the release of the Mattel Films production Barbie (read our review Here), The New Yorker published an article about the fact that Mattel is “raiding its entire toybox” to find products to turn into movies – for example, J.J. Abrams is working on Hot Wheels, Vin Diesel is plotting Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Daniel Kaluuya is making a Barney movie, Tom Hanks will star in Major Matt Mason (author Michael Chabon has written the treatment), a script is being written for American Girl, etc. From that article, we learned that Cocaine Bear screenwriter Jimmy Warden has been writing a horror comedy inspired by Mattel’s toy Magic 8 Ball. Yes, the ball that you ask questions and then turn over to see which of twenty possible answers you might get. Now Variety has put together an article where Mattel gives information on their...

Four years ago, it was announced that Blumhouse Productions and director Jeff Wadlow were teaming up again for a movie based on the Mattel toy Magic 8 Ball. Yes, the ball that you ask questions and then turn over to see which of twenty possible answers you might get. Since so much time has passed since that announcement was made, it’s not clear if Blumhouse or Wadlow are still involved with the project – but The New Yorker has revealed that Magic 8 Ball is still in the works, and Cocaine Bear screenwriter Jimmy Warden is writing the horror comedy.

The latest venture from genre specialists Blumhouse Productions is this horror adaptation of the popular 1977 TV series that starred Ricardo Montalban and Hervé Villechaize. However, while that sounds like a good idea in theory, it leaves a little to be desired in practice.
The set-up is almost identical to the TV show. A plane full of good-looking competition winners arrives at a remote island and their mysterious, white-suited host Mr Roarke (Michael Peña) informs them that the island will fulfil their every fantasy. The only catches are that it’s one fantasy per person and they have to see it out till the end, come what may.

As someone who was a fan of Jeff Wadlow’s efforts on Truth or Dare, it brings me no pleasure in saying that his latest project, Fantasy Island (2020), is a bit of a misfire. Not only is it about 20 minutes too long, but the film’s various storylines meander and never quite come together in a satisfactory way, and some of Fantasy Island’s feel-good moments come off cheesy and unearned as well. That being said, this amped up remake of the popular TV series has two saving graces: Michael Peña and Lucy Hale, and they do their very best to keep things afloat here with their respective performances.
The premise of Fantasy Island (2020) is pretty straightforward if you’ve ever seen the hit series—strangers come to the island for the purpose of living out their wildest fantasies, ultimately fulfilling some aspect of their lives that they feel is lacking.

Exclusive: Mattel said Monday that the live-action feature film version based on their popular toy Magic 8 Ball is finally happening, with Oscar-winning studio Blumhouse and Truth or Dare and Fantasy Island director Jeff Wadlow attached.
Wadlow will also write the script with his collaborators, Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach. This marks Mattel Films’ first partnership with an independent studio.
“Since the 1950s, Magic 8 Ball has inspired imagination, suspense and intrigue across generations. This iconic toy has a built-in connection with fans and untapped potential for storytelling,” said Robbie Brenner of Mattel Films. “There are no partners better suited to tell the Magic 8 Ball story in collaboration with Mattel Films than Jeff Wadlow and Blumhouse Productions, whose unique approach to the thriller genre has captivated audiences worldwide and has gained widespread accolades.”

Lucy Hale is not opposed to indulging in a game or three on the small screen. Across seven seasons of hit mystery-thriller Pretty Little Liars, the actress wormed her way into our hearts and minds as Aria Montgomery, the sharp-suited chameleon of Rosewood who went on to tie the knot with Ezra.
The Pll faithful are currently bracing themselves for the show’s seventh and final season, which is expected to air later in 2017, but we now have word that Lucy Hale has landed a gig beyond the realm of Pennsylvania. Per Variety, the actress has sealed a deal to headline Truth or Dare, a supernatural thriller in the works from Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow.
Hale, meanwhile, is expected to take point as “a college student in Mexico who is conned into playing a supernatural version of Truth or Dare. The game doesn’t stop and follows her back home.

If you have some ghosts that need to be exorcised — metaphorically speaking, that is, such as, say, the cultural ghosts of 9/11 — and you want them to stay exorcised, you could do worse than to call on Liam Neeson. He has a very particular set of skills, you see, skills acquired over a very long career as an actor. He can be machinelike badass and lip-quiveringly flawed human at the same time. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra
USA, 2014
Liam Neeson’s face has become a world-weary, pock-marked road map over the years, detailing a wholesome leading man’s travails into cinematic battle. In the last 6 years, he’s revitalized himself as a no-nonsense action hero, an unstoppably tough Good Guy With A Dark Past, starting with the outrageous Taken all the way up to his new film, Non-Stop. Gone is the soulful dramatic lead of the early 1990s; in his place is a take-no-guff sort who better like you or else he’ll probably put a choke hold on you in about eight seconds. (His recent detour into voiceover work, in The Lego Movie, was a pitch-perfect parody of the stereotype he’s otherwise embodied in his recent films.) Non-Stop is, as would be expected, an enormously silly film that either squanders...

Is the airplane becoming the modern equivalent of the snowed-in country house? Apparently so, as Liam Neeson manages a fuselage full of trouble in this enjoyable silly thriller
An airborne thriller that mashes up the plot of United 93 and Agatha Christie's Death in the Clouds? Surely you can't be serious!
Liam Neeson is the grizzled ex-cop turned air marshal on an ordinary flight from New York to London, secretly packing a badge, a gun and a whole mess of personal demons that might yet be exorcised by an act of redemptive heroism. Out of the blue, in mid-flight, he gets a chilling anonymous message on his special air‑marshal instant-message device. Every 20 minutes, a passenger on his plane is going to be killed, unless $150m is paid into a certain numbered account. Liam's bloodshot eyes flicker tensely around the plane – which one of this cross-section of humanity is sending the messages?...

For what it is, Non-Stop is a satisfying thriller, but it's a standard whodunnit with a slight psychological bend that, had it been pursued to the end, would have actually made it the Hitchcockian thrill ride some are going to attempt to peg it as being. However, to do that would have taken a lot more nerve than a director of Jaume Collet-Serra's standing has shown to possess, though you could argue Orphan (which went all the way to the other side) was more ballsy than most films we get today, even if I wasn't much of a fan, though more as a result of the filmmaking not the actual narrative. This time Collet-Serra is working with a screenplay from unproven screenwriters John W. Richardson, Chris Roach and Ryan Engle, all first-time feature writers with Roach being a regular writer for the WWE. Given their credits, or lack-of, I would have expected much worse,...

It's Liam Neeson versus a mysterious texting hijacker in Non-Stop. Here's Ryan's review of an enjoyably daft thriller...
Whether it’s rescuing kidnapped daughters in Paris or punching wolves in the middle of nowhere, screenwriters have been diligently coming up with new reasons for Liam Neeson to clench his fists in a succession of action movies and thrillers. Along with Jason Statham, Neeson’s become a true 21st century action hero, in the sense that he assumes different names in each film, but really, we all know he’s good old Liam Neeson.
In Non-Stop, he plays Bill Marks, a depressive United States air marshal who drinks and smokes a lot. During a routine overnight flight from New York to London, he begins to receive a series of menacing texts from an anonymous passenger. “Are you ready to do your duty?” asks one. Another...

"Unknown," "Orphan," and "House Of Wax" are all various degrees of fun, depending on how seriously you take them, and director Jaume Collet-Serra is certainly slick. Part of me wonders if he can read, though, because he seems to have made a habit of picking ridiculous scripts with ridiculous ideas at the heart of them, and then he directs them as if they are the most serious things in the world. In theory, I have no problem with that. As I said, I think those three films manage to be silly pulpy fun, and that's exactly what I expected from "Non-Stop." For a good chunk of its running time, it is indeed a silly but well-made ride in which Liam Neeson plays his popular character John Taken, but on a plane this time and without a daughter. There is a point in the film, though, where the bad guy (whose...

When a fictional news reporter says, retrospectively and entirely earnestly, at the end of a film that the set of events we’ve just witnessed took an “unbelievable twist”, you can’t help but feel that the filmmaker is blowing his own trumpet somewhat. Either that or they’re just not taking themselves at all seriously. In the case of Jaume Collet-Serra’s Non-Stop, it can only be the latter.
During a transatlantic flight from America to London, air marshal Bill Marks (Liam Neeson), alongside his colleague Jack Hammond (Anson Mount), are called into action when the former receives several text messages from somebody onboard the plane, threatening to kill a passenger every 20 minutes unless 150 million dollars is credited to his account. On February 28th, have a safe flight.
Global action star Liam Neeson (Taken series, Unknown) is U.S. Air Marshal Bill Marks in Non-stop, a suspense thriller played out at 40,000 feet in the air. During a transatlantic flight from New York City to London, Marks receives a series of cryptic text messages demanding that he instruct the airline to transfer $150 million into a numbered account. Until he secures the money, a passenger on his flight will be killed every 20 minutes.
Struggling with his personal demons has drained Marks of any passion for the heroic calling of his profession. He has come to view his important assignment as merely a desk job in the sky. However, another day at the office becomes a high-stakes crisis when shortly into a routine transatlantic flight, Marks’ world is upended.
Surrounded by only a couple of people he initially believes are trustworthy—including his fellow passenger,...

If you still haven't caught up on the antics of Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele on their Comedy Central sketch show "Key & Peele," then you're missing out on some great comedy. Last time we highlighted the comedy duo was when their excitable valet employees were excited about A Good Day to Die Hard, reprising characters who made a splash by talking enthusiastically about "Liam Neesons." Yes, that's what the two call the star of Taken, and now they have their dreams come true when they encounter the actor himself whilst in the midst of hyping up Neeson's latest film Non-Stop. This might be the best thing to come from the existence of the mile-high thriller, since the film doesn't look like anything special. Here's Key & Peele meeting "Liam Neesons" in a sketch promoting Non-Stop (via Comedy Central): Non-Stop is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) and produced by Joel Silver,...

After working together on 2011’s very successful Unknown, director Jaume Collet-Serra and Liam Neeson have reteamed to bring us yet another anticipated action blockbuster, Non-Stop.
Due to hit cinemas early next year, the film sees Neeson star as an air marshal whose flight is attacked 40,000 feet in the air. And whilst things have been quiet on the project up until now, with the first and only image surfacing way back in January, Universal has now launched the first trailer and poster over on Apple.

Following collaboration on the action thriller Unknown, surprise action star Liam Neeson reunites with director Jaume Collet-Serra for Non-Stop. But this time the danger lies 40,000 feet in the air as Neeson plays a U.S. Marshal tasked with negotiating a mutli-million dollar payment to an unknown terrorist or the passengers on his flight will be killed one by one every 20 minutes. It's a simple plot, and this could just as easily be called Taken on a Plane, but there might be enough originality here to make it a fun February release. We're mostly curious as to how this bad guy is killing people on the plane with nobody noticing. Here's the first trailer for Jaume Collet-Serra's Non-Stop, originally from Apple: Non-Stop is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) and produced by Joel Silver, with a script from Christopher Roach and John W. Richardson ("Big Brother" co-executive producer and editor respectively). Liam Neeson plays U.

Here’s the first (and once again – official) look at Liam Neeson, who stars as the lead in the upcoming action thriller Non-Stop. As you already know, this movie comes from director Jaume Collet-Serra, and follows an air marshall who must spring into action aboard an international flight.
Beside Neeson, Non-Stop also stars Julianne Moore, Nate Parker, Michelle Dockery and Scoot McNairy, and the movie is still without an official release date.
Collet-Serra directs the movie from a script written by Christopher Roach and John W. Richardson which centers on:
Bill Marks, a burned-out veteran of the Air Marshals service. He views the assignment not as a life-saving duty, but as a desk job in the sky. However, today’s flight will be no routine trip. Shortly into the transatlantic journey from New York to London, he receives a series of mysterious text messages ordering him to have the government...

Liam Neeson has always been a hard-working actor, but in the past few years he has proven tirelessly prolific, appearing in three to four films a year. Fitting then that he's now shooting an action-thriller called Non-Stop. The feature penned by Christopher Roach and John W. Richardson reunites Neeson with his Unknown director, Jaume Collet-Serra. Despite its lackluster title, that $30 million mystery movie went on to earn more than $130 million worldwide. So it's easy to see why Unknown's producer Joel Silver would be eager to reteam its star and helmer for this thriller. In Non-Stop, Neeson plays Bill Marks, a long-time Air Marshall who has lost site of the importance of his work, viewing it as the world's highest altitude desk job. But his viewpoint changes completely on an international flight from New York to London, where terrorists demand $150 million from the government, threatening one of the plane's 200 passengers...

Austin, Texas — Music festivals are booming, and so is one alternative to paying soaring ticket prices to spend a long weekend packed among 50,000 or more typically sweaty concertgoers: watching the performances online for free.
At the Austin City Limits Music Festival, about a third of the nearly 130 bands on a lineup that includes the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Black Keys and Jack White will have their sets broadcast on YouTube. That's a record for the three-day festival that starts Friday. Just six years ago organizers began webcasting with a single feed and struggled to persuade artists to even participate.
The same was once true at trendsetters like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. But as Austin City Limits marks the unofficial end of the big-festival calendar in the U.S. for 2012, this year might also go down as the year when live-streams started crossing into mainstream.
Take the year's most talked-about performance:...
