- He was romantically involved with fellow New York City Ballet dancer Suzanne Farrell while she was in a romantic relationship with George Balanchine. When their relationship got especially serious, the relationship with Balanchine became horribly strained and both Meja and Farrell left the City Ballet.

- I had to sit through my sister's classes. I figured, It soon became addictive. Twice at draft physicals I was told to see a shrink when I said my occupation was ballet. It's awful, being a ballet dancer-homosexual or not-to be insulted like that. Ballet attracts its 'wrong types,' who just want to be in tights, but it's not prissy. You must have tremendous power and stamina. It's quite manly.
