- Considered one of the greatest drummers in music history.
- He died of an heart attack, caused by an allergic reaction to an insecticide he was spraying in the yard of his Hidden Hills home. On August 5, 1992, Porcaro fell ill while doing the yard work and then went into full cardiac arrest. The paramedics managed to briefly revive him and he was taken by helicopter to Humana Hospital-West Hills in Canoga Park, Los Angeles. He was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m. Porcaro is interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles.

- There is an inscription of his tombstone which reads: "Our love doesn't end here; it lives forever, on the wings of time".
- Co-wrote a number of memorable songs for TOTO, including their major hit "Africa" (a collaboration with keyboardist David Paich).
- Didn't like to play drum solos.
- After his death in 1992, a memorial concert took place at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles on December 14th 1992, with an all-star line up that included Boz Scaggs, Donald Fagen, Don Henley, Michael McDonald, Edward Van Halen and, of course, TOTO.
- He and Susan Norris had three sons: Christopher Joseph Porcaro (born 1984); Miles Edwin Crawford Porcaro (born 1986); and Nico Hendrix Porcaro (born 1991). Miles died in 2017, at the age of 31.
