Director David Slade (30 Days of Night) dishes up a devilishly delicious Halloween treat with MGM’s Dark Harvest. Slade and screenwriter Michael Gilio deliver plenty of gore and gruesome deaths, and the R-rating is not only justified but embraced.
It’s made clear straight away that there’s something wrong with the small town of Bastion, something that only the death of a terrifying creature known as Sawtooth Jack (think Slenderman with a pumpkin head) can fix. However, it’s also clear that killing this supernatural beast isn’t a once-and-done event.
Each Halloween, Sawtooth Jack rises from the cornfields and makes his way into town. If Sawtooth Jack survives and reaches the church before the bell tolls midnight, then the town will be destroyed. If he’s slaughtered – and the candy and treats stuffed inside him...

My heart belongs to Halloween. Pumpkins, cornfields, bright orange sunsets, chilly air, masks, dead leaves on the dirty ground — the whole shebang. As long as I can I remember, I've been obsessed with all things Halloween; to me, it's the most wonderful time of the year. So I'm kind of already in the tank for David Slade's stylish little Halloween treat "Dark Harvest." Adapted from the novel by Norman Partridge, "Dark Harvest" is bloody fun; a treat bag full of Halloween imagery tailor-made to trick people like me into loving it almost unconditionally. However, the closer you look, the more flaws appear — Michael Gilio's script is underbaked, and the film feels like it just sort of runs out of steam instead of actually ending.
But oh, the atmosphere is a delight, and the Halloween vibes are off the charts. Slade and cinematographer Larry Smith overload the movie with...

Norman Partridge’s 2006 Bram Stoker Award-winning novel Dark Harvest introduced a grim Halloween hunt set in a scenic 1963 hamlet. Like a campfire tale, the brisk novel embraced Halloween iconography and small-town rot, told with an almost poetic prose and simplicity befitting of a Twilight Zone episode. Director David Slade (30 Days of Night) and screenwriter Michael Gilio (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) adhere to the novel’s essence, unleashing Halloween carnage that upstages the barebones story.
Dark Harvest reveals the ominous origins of its title straightaway with an introduction to the annual Halloween hunt that takes place in a picturesque but cursed rural town. Every Halloween, the legendary Sawtooth Jack rises from the cornfields, where he must fight through a gauntlet of murderous teen boys, all eager to snuff him out lest he make his way to the town’s church by midnight. A new urban legend comes to life in the new trailer for Dark Harvest. The trailer starts with the ominous, almost Grimm fairy tale-esque narration that says, “It’s Halloween. You know what that means. Old Sawtooth Jack is gonna rise from the cornfields. It’s gotta be stopped. Kill or be killed.” David Slade returns to a grittier tone after the Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night director took on one of the chapters in the Twilight franchise, helming The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. The director also returns to features after Slade tried his hand at television with Breaking Bad and Black Mirror. He also once set to make a series, Red Bird Lane, with Crispin Glover and Susan Sarandon until Max (HBO Max at the time) opted not to continue with it.

With just the CW left tomorrow, the near-talent-free upfronts are winding down, and shows are still being shuttered in New York City, while on the picket lines in LA there was Mariachism, tacos, tunes and some Mandalorians to galvanize the troops.
On the 16th day of the Writers Guild strike, picket signs were up near Madison Square Garden this morning as Warner Bros Discovery kicked off its muted pitch to advertisers a week before the company’ streamer officially becomes Max. As HBO chief Casey Bloys offered support on-stage at the Msg Theatre for a “fair resolution” for the WGA, outside picketers were moved almost out of view of entering attendees due to nearly construction.
Slated to be between 32nd and 31st streets on 8th avenue, the picket line this morning was moved to 31st and 7th in front of building Penn 11.

Paramount Picture and eOne’s “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” will be available to stream on Paramount+ on Tuesday, May 16. This comes 47 days after its March 31 domestic theatrical debut, continuing Paramount’s mostly-firm 45-day window — most movies arrive on home video on a Tuesday — between theatrical and streaming which began in July 2021 with “A Quiet Place Part II.” The film has been available to rent on PVOD for $20 or buy digitally for $25 since May 2, with a DVD, Blu-ray and 4K release arriving May 30.
The film received solid reviews and excellent word of mouth, but the $150 million franchise starter barely topped $205 million worldwide in theatrical earnings. The Dungeons and Dragons brand was a prime example of “IP for the sake of IP.” None of its admittedly impressive cast qualified as a butts-in-seats draw. Moreover, the film was initially slated for March 10 before being moved to March 31.

Dungeons & Dragons series: Drew Crevello joins the party as showrunner of the live-action adaptation
The Dungeons & Dragons series is gaining another party member in Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) as the showrunner of the live-action adaptation for Paramount+. Crevello will work closely with Rawson Marshall Thurber, who wrote the pilot script and will direct the first episode. The eight-episode series is a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures, with eOne leading the charge.
According to Deadline’s previous report, “Adapting Dungeons & Dragons for television has been a major focus for eOne under President of Global Television Michael Lombardo following the company’s 2019 acquisition by Hasbro. The live-action series has been tipped to be the studio’s largest-scope TV project ever, potentially launching a Dungeons & Dragons universe spanning multiple scripted and unscripted shows.”
Deadline would also like to remind us that Dungeons & Dragons is “a fantasy role-playing game franchise. Featuring humans, elves, orcs, and other fantastical creatures engaging in wars, treasure hunts, and campaigns,...

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves should not work nearly as well as it does. It’s an adaptation of a game whose heyday was forty years ago, in a genre that spits out three flops for every success – lest we forget, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings was preceded by a Dungeons and Dragons adaptation that even hardcore fans of the game are loathe to revisit.
And yet, this new D&d adventure is a hoot, an imaginative and fun yarn that will please longtime Dungeon Masters while keeping the unfamiliar engaged. It has enough wit and charm to be mentioned in the same sentence as The Princess Bride, even if it can’t quite capture the epic highs of Rob Reiner’s classic.
The film opens with thieves Edgin (Chris Pine) and Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) in an icy prison, appealing for pardon. There’s just enough time...

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves opened to an honorable enough $38.5 million at the domestic box office, enough to take out John Wick: Chapter 4 and top the chart.
The big-budget movie — based on Hasbro’s fantasy tabletop game — came in ahead of expectations but will still need strong legs throughout April and into May in order to launch a new movie franchise for Paramount and eOne after costing $150 million to produce before marketing.
Dungeons & Dragons certainly has that chance: it earned stellar reviews and an A- CinemaScore from audiences. Upcoming spring breaks and the Easter holiday will be another advantage. But adapting games has always been tricky business. Last year, Sony’s Uncharted debuted to $44 million domestically on its way to ultimately being considered a success.

In recent years, the fantasy genre has become quite the fad and is gaining unprecedented traction, especially on the small screen, be it the grandiosity of “Rings of Power,” the spin-off series of the most revered high fantasy “Lord of the Rings,” or the political intrigue of “House of the Dragon,” the prequel series of fan-favorite low fantasy “Game of Thrones.” With every major studio aiming to create a franchise using popular IPs, the choicest among them being superhero fiction, space sci-fi, and fantasy, it was about time that the legendary tabletop role-playing high fantasy game “Dungeons & Dragons” got their chance to shine in a new live-action adaptation. Wiping the slate clean by totally disconnecting from any of the former forgettable entries of the franchise, the quartet—directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein and writers Michael Gilio and Chris McKay—opted for an innovative, comedic approach to present...

Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez headline this fantasy action adventure thriller based on the titular Role Playing Game. Co-directed by Game Night duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves ticks all the right blockbuster boxes and could find its way to a successful franchise, with a prevailing role of a D-20.
Set in the Middle Ages of what might as well be called Fantasyland, the story begins with best buddies Edgin the thief (Pine) and Holga the barbarian (Rodriguez) escaping from prison in highly entertaining fashion, while simultaneously filling us in on some backstory as they’re recanting their deeds for the parole board. We learn that Edgin’s...

This weekend’s box office race sees Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves taking on John Wick: Chapter 4 in what’s bound to be an interesting contest.
Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, Dungeons & Dragons is based on Hasbro’s influential role-playing game and features a star-packed cast led by Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head and Hugh Grant.
Tracking suggests the movie will open to a somewhat subdued $30 million domestically, but many box office analysts believe that number will come in higher thanks to strong early audience reaction and stellar reviews commending the movie’s smart sense of adventure and jovial spirit.
Paramount and eOne, which is owned by Hasbro, co-produced and co-financed the big-budget fantasy pic, which cost a reported $150 million to make before marketing. The film also launches in more than 50 markets overseas, including the U.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” seems like an absolutely delightful movie, and we can’t wait to see it. And helping us with that assessment considerably is an absolutely delightful new ad for the film that debuted earlier today.
The ad doesn’t actually contain any footage from the movie — you can watch one of those here, in case you need to see it again (you do). Instead, it hilariously reunites three of the stars of “Freaks and Geeks” to finally finish up that game of “Dungeons & Dragons” they played all the way back in the show’s final episode.
Now, we assume if you’re reading this you know what the previous paragraph is talking about, but just in case, “Freaks and Geeks” was a hugely influential single camera comedy-drama that ran for a single season from 1999-2000. Created by future “Bridesmaids” director Paul Feig and executive produced by Judd Apatow,...

We’re just one week away from the March 31st theatrical release date of Paramount Pictures’ Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is based on the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game franchise – and just in case the positive reviews (there’s a bunch of them quoted in the final trailer) haven’t convinced someone to see the movie, Paramount is now using the Freaks and Geeks connection to try to lure in viewers. In the new ad that you can check out in the Twitter embed below, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves director John Francis Daley is reunited with Samm Levine and Martin Starr, his co-stars from the short-lived but beloved TV series Freaks and Geeks, which went off the air twenty-three years ago after just one season.

For Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves star Chris Pine, it all started with the story.
“I have to like the script,” Pine told The Hollywood Reporter Sunday evening at the film’s Los Angeles premiere about what made him say yes to his role as the lovable, lute-playing bard Edgin. “For me, it was the fact that [Dungeons & Dragons] felt earnest and heartfelt and grounded. It didn’t feel jaded or cynical or meta or postmodern. It just was big-budget, old fashioned moviemaking. The kind of feeling of The Princess Bride and Willow and The NeverEnding Story, and all the stuff that I watched as a kid.”
With a screenplay by Michael Gilio and director duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein — and story by Gilio and Chris McKay — Honor Among Thieves is rooted in comedy, unlike some of the darker, more serious fantasy films in recent years. The...

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves pulls from the camaraderie of the roleplaying game from which it’s based to deliver on a fantastical adventure. Game adaptations on the silver screen get a bad rap, as they’re often dismissed as poor storytelling right out of the gate. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is an enjoyable adventure with the potential for a charming franchise.

It’s hard to believe, but it took almost a decade to bring Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves to movie screens. The film has been in development hell since 2013, with Warner Bros. initially expressing interest in bringing the tabletop role-playing game to life.
However, the film later moved to Paramount Pictures. Chris McKay and Michael Gilio were originally tapped to write and direct the movie, but were replaced in 2019 with Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who used elements from McKay and Gilio’s script.
And though there are plenty of references to the Dungeons & Dragons game, the film’s directors said they “definitely took some liberties” when making the movie.

Look, Paramount really wants you to check out "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." The studio is banking hard on turning the pater familias of tabletop fantasy role-playing games into a lucrative multimedia property with this film, complete with potential sequels and multiple streaming series (both scripted and unscripted). Luckily for them, the early word of mouth is "Honor Among Thieves" is actually quite excellent. As in, so much so I might even be okay with it spawning an entire multiverse of "D&d" projects, as exhausted as I imagine we are all of every franchise being turned into a cinematic multiverse these days.

Paramount Pictures has been releasing a steady stream of clips and featurettes to promote their upcoming release Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which is based on the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game franchise and is set to reach theatres on March 31st. (And got solid reviews from those in attendance at its SXSW film festival screening.) Today we have both a clip and a featurette to share with you, and they can be seen at the bottom of this article.
The clip shows off a 3 minute stretch of the film, with the lead characters and some disposable side characters getting chased through a maze by a tricky beast. The featurette discusses the fact that the story of the film pits our heroes against the forces of evil.

The appeal of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign is in creating weird, wonderful characters of your own and throwing them into a wide array of quests: no two games can ever be the same. This is what I’m assured by friends who are into D&d, anyway, as playing any tabletop game with a convoluted set of instructions causes me to glaze over mentally––yes, dear reader, the following review isn’t written from an authoritative perspective as a member of the franchise’s enduring fandom. I have been informed by those more in the know than myself that the latest role-playing, game-themed effort from director duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (who previously gave us the appreciably greater Game Night) contains a treasure trove of Easter Eggs and winking references only the faithful will latch onto.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein opened up about their introductions to the game while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in its SXSW Studio at South by Southwest on Saturday.
Based on the role-playing game, the film follows a group of thieves who steal a relic for an evil Red Wizard who uses it to create an army of the undead. The unlikely group teams up to stop the Red Wizard and save the world.
“I was first introduced to the game when I was an actor on Freaks and Geeks. I was 14 years old,” Daley told THR at the Austin festival. “My character is supposed to be a huge Dungeons & Dragons fan, so we did a small campaign with the cast then and it kind of opened my eyes to what made it so special and different.”

Have you ever played Dungeons and Dragons? If not, odds are you know someone who has, and even stronger odds that you know someone who adores it. The beloved table-top game, which was introduced nearly 50 years ago, is just that: beloved — which is why it might be puzzling that it took so many years for the property to be adapted for the screen. After the bomb that was the 2000 adaptation, it seemed like we might never explore the worlds of D&d in cinemas again. But good things take time, and that adage has never seemed more true than in the face of “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” the fantasy-comedy that brings the world of the game (at least one version of it) to audiences in a way they’ve never experienced before.

Breathing life into the beloved board game Dungeons & Dragons was no easy feat, as it took the roleplaying tabletop game’s long-gestating feature film adaptation four years to reach the silver screen on the opening night of this year’s SXSW. But patience, passion, and perseverance prevailed — and, incidentally, those aren’t just traits necessary for making any film, they’re also the exact mix one needs to succeed in the playing of the beloved RPG itself.
Drawing inspiration from the game’s unique improvisation and communal creativity, directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein successfully construct with “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”
The story follows the heartbroken and comically calculated Edgin (played by the charming Chris Pine), an ex-Harper who has turned to petty thievery. He escapes prison with his barbarian best friend Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), who has spent years helping him raise his daughter Kira...

We start with a dungeon buried under layers of snow. The camera takes in the frosty landscape; a blizzard blurs our vision. We hear the clank of metal chains meeting concrete floors before seeing the dour-looking figure being ushered into a cell. He is confident — cocky, even — about his new mates. A smooth-faced man with searching blue eyes knits a sweater in one corner. A scruffy woman, wearing a perpetual frown, inhales a potato in the other. Arrogance and unfamiliarity make for a deadly combo. When the new cellmate says the wrong thing, his head swiftly hits the concrete. Quite the brutal opening for a film that’s ultimately such a jovial adventure.

I have friends who’ve played the table-top, role-playing fantasy game Dungeons and Dragons (D&d), but I haven’t played ever. My friends tell me I’m missing out, but none of them will explain and teach me how to play, and all I know is that players can create their own characters and adventures. Whether Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves keeps true to the spirit of the game, I can’t say. However, as a film, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s execution pays off in a major way. Written by Daley, Goldstein and Michael Gilio, the movie that just opened SXSW has an all-star cast including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Daisy Head.

Introducing “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” the lavish hyperkinetic popcorn fairy tale that kicked off SXSW this evening, the film’s co-directors, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, told the audience that they had designed the movie to appeal to hardcore D&d players — and also to those who know absolutely nothing about the game. This came as a relief to me, since what I know about Dungeons & Dragons you could put on the head of a…well, I know so little that I can’t even come up with a proper D&d reference with which to spin that cliché.
The filmmakers were being honest. “Honor Among Thieves” is built on the edifice of D&d lore, packed with totems and characters and Easter eggs that fans of the legendary role-playing game will drink in with a connoisseur’s delight. But for those, like me, who have...

Dungeons & Dragons is, by its very nature, undefinable. The world's most popular tabletop roleplaying game is a sandbox built on a never-ending pile of options, an opportunity for creative gamers to immerse themselves in fantasy fiction and tell a story together. There is no defined tone, no set-in-stone canon, no rules beyond the mechanics that allow a roll of the dice to determine disaster or triumph. There is no right way to play Dungeons & Dragons. Every group will be different. Every dungeon master will craft a tone unique to their table.
"Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein probably run one hell of a D&d session. Their interpretation of the game's infinite pool of fantastical options and monsters and adventures is powered by humor and heart, a take that is more "Princess Bride" with big action than grim 'n' gritty dark fantasy.
