Year 2023 will be remembered in Hollywood for various phenomena — the strikes, Barbenheimer — but for Latinos, 2023 was the year that saw a relatively significant number of movies and TV releases from and about their community, in a variety of genres. With actors and writers spending about half of last year unable to promote their projects, the atmosphere at Neuehouse in Hollywood was all the more electric last Friday evening as a who’s who of Latin entertainment, media, sports and politics came together to toast the excellence they saw on the big and small screens.
The event, La Cena Los Angeles, was an expansion of the intimate multi-city La Cena dinner series started last year by culture and impact consultant Ruben Garcia, formerly co-head of cultural business strategy at CAA, to cultivate community among impactful Latino figures across disciplines.

Madrid, Aug 14 (Ians) Fc Barcelona were held to a goalless draw by Getafe in their La Liga debut on Sunday evening.
Both sides finished with 10 players, after Raphinha’s dismissal for elbowing Getafe defender Gaston Alvarez in the first half, while Getafe’s Jaime Mata received a red card after the interval, reports Xinhua.
Barca’s coach, Xavi Hernandez, was also shown the red card due to his apparent discontent with Getafe’s fouling and time-wasting tactics. This frustration was evident as the referee added a whopping 10 minutes of added time in the first half and over 15 in the second. That period culminated with Var dismissing what seemed a valid Barcelona penalty appeal.
Real Madrid secured a 2-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, thanks to first-half goals from Rodrygo and debutant Jude Bellingham. Rodrygo utilized open space to score in the 28th minute, followed by Bellingham’s goal from a corner,...

Madrid, April 26 (Ians) Valentin Castellano had a night he will never forget as he scored four goals in Girona’s 4-2 humiliation of Real Madrid in La Liga.
The striker put Girona ahead with a powerful header in the 12th minute, after a fine cross from Miguel Gutierrez, whom Madrid sold to the Catalan club in the summer, reports Xinhua.
His second goal came 12 minutes later after he beat Eder Militao to a long ball and fired past Andriy Lunin, who played in goal for Madrid after Thibaut Courtois was affected by a stomach bug.
Vinicius Jr pulled a goal back for Real Madrid, which was at close to full strength, in the 34th minute, but Castellanos completed his hat-trick early in the second half after a cross from Ivan Martin, and he netted his fourth of the game in the 62nd minute with another unstoppable header.

Pamplona, Spain, Jan 26 (Ians) Osasuna qualified for the semifinals of the Copa del Rey with a 2-1 win at home to Sevilla on Wednesday night.
Chimy Avila opened the scoring after a knockdown from substitute Ruben Garcia in the 70th minute of a tight game in which Sevilla controlled the first half, and Osasuna was the better side after the break, reports Xinhua news agency.
However, just when it looked as if the side from Pamplona had booked their place in the last four, Sevilla striker Youssef En-Nesyri forced extra time with a 95th-minute equalizer as he finished Suso’s cross from close range.
Sevilla started extra time strongly, but Osasuna won the game when Jon Moncayola’s ball from the back found Ez Abde and the winger turned Loric Bade before beating Bono with a low shot to send the home fans wild.

Bilbao (Spain), Jan 19 (Ians) Athletic Club Bilbao continued their good form in the Copa del Rey knockout competition by qualifying for the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win at home to Espanyol.
The win on Wednesday night means the team from the Basque Region have now reached the last eight of the tournament for four consecutive seasons.
Oscar de Marcos scored the only goal of the game in the 26th minute after the full-back ran onto a smart backheel from midfielder Oihan Sancet, who had been fed by an intelligent pass from the impressive Oier Zarraga.
Athletic completely dominated the first half, which was played almost entirely in the Espanyol half, with the visitors sitting deep with a five-man defense.
The second half saw visiting coach Diego Martinez make an attacking change, bringing on winger Aleix Vidal, but although Espanyol looked to push forward more, Athletic continued to control the majority of the ball.

Lúcia Moniz is a Portuguese mother pitted against social services in this deeply moving piece of social-realist cinema
The Portuguese actor Lúcia Moniz is maybe still best known as the woman Colin Firth falls for in Love Actually. Now she stars in this sombre, angry social-realist drama from the Portuguese film-maker Ana Rocha (a London Film School graduate), which sees Brexit Britain through European eyes. There are some implausibilities and untied plot strands, but also something scary and overwhelmingly sad.
Moniz and Ruben Garcia play Bela and Jota, a Portuguese couple with three children in a London council flat who have fallen on hard times. Bela makes some money cleaning houses but Jota is angry and depressed at not having been paid for timber-yard work. Movies can earn better reviews and millions more at the box office, if their cultural depictions are authentic and free from stereotypes, a new report from the University of California, Los Angeles and Creative Artists Agency found.
The joint study, helmed by UCLA’s Center for Scholars and Storytellers and the Full Story Initiative at CAA, researched the impact of authentic inclusive representation (quantified as Air scores) on box office performance and critical and audience reception. The study found that each Air point increase meant a 18.8 million revenue bump for films with a budget of 159 million and more. All told, high-budget films could earn an additional 75.2 million by increasing their Air scores, and audiences and critics responded more favorably to studio films with higher Air scores.
“These findings are consistent with what our industry has known for years – authentic, inclusive representation drives our communities and business forward,” said Ruben Garcia,...

The CW has given a straight-to-series order to Tom Swift, based on the classic book series Tom Swift, with a twist, for the 2021-22 season. Tom Swift comes from Nancy Drew co-creators/executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, their Fake Empire banner and CBS Studios.
Tom Swift, a spinoff of Nancy Drew, was one of two projects that had remained in contention after the network had made decisions on the bulk of its six 2021 pilots, handing series orders only to Naomi and All American: Homecoming in May.
The CBS Studios/Fake Empire-produced project did not do a traditional backdoor pilot; instead the character Tom Swift, played by Tian Richards, appeared in a Nancy Drew episode titled “The Celestial Visitor,” which was directed by Ruben Garcia, and the network also ordered a pilot script.

The show is a spinoff of the CW series “Nancy Drew.” Tian Richards made his first appearance as the character in the “Nancy Drew” episode “The Celestial Visitor” during that show’s second season. It served as a backdoor pilot to the “Tom Swift” standalone series. The new show will debut during the 2021-2022 broadcast season, but no official premiere date has been set at this time.
“Tom Swift” follows the serialized adventures of the titular Black, gay, billionaire inventor, who is thrust into a world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the shocking disappearance of his father. Tom takes to the road on a quest to unravel the truth, leaving behind the comforts of his usual moneyed lifestyle, all while fighting to stay one step ahead of an Illuminati-scale group hell-bent on stopping him.

Power agency CAA and its eponymous foundation have launched a new program to help storytellers accurately portray marginalized communities and sensitive social issues.
The Full Story Initiative, announced Tuesday, will offer an industry-wide resource to “generate authentic narratives in television and film for a more equitable future,” a mission statement said.
As an agency, CAA has influence at every level of storytelling, from scripts to financing to (of course) star talent. In partnership with the CAA Foundation, their hope is to connect studios, networks and producers with a non-profit advisory committee that can identify blind spots and offer rounder representation on screen. Full Story will not only target projects at nascent stages and connect them with appropriate experts and advocates, but also offer tools for Hollywood at large. The agency will also develop special internal coverage systems to identify these projects.

Madrid, March 8 (Ians) Karim Benzema's 88th minute goal kept Real Madrid in the race for the La Liga title on Sunday as he canceled out Luis Suarez's opener for Atletico Madrid in a 1-1 draw in the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
Suarez's 14th minute goal, following excellent work from Marco Llorente, looked as if it was going to allow Atletico to open up an eight-point gap over their neighbours in the table, and Atletico were good value for their lead for much of the game on Sunday.
However, after being aggressive for much of the game, they sat deep in the last 15 minutes and allowed Real Madrid to attack them, with Benzema's goal after an exchange of passes with Casemiro punishing that decision, Xinhua news reports.

Madrid, March 7 (Ians) Fc Barcelona moved to within two points of Atletico Madrid to increase the pressure at the top of La Liga less than 24 hours before Sunday's derby between Atletico and Real Madrid, thanks to a 2-0 win away to Osasuna.
Goals from Jordi Alba and Illax Moriba gave Barca a hard-fought win against a rival that caused them lots of problems, especially in the first half in the El Sadar Stadium on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported.
Osasuna started the brighter of the two sides and Jonathan Calleri almost opened the scoring from the halfway line in just the second minute with Marc-Andre Ter Stegen chasing back.
The Barca keeper then saved well from Kike Barja as the home side continued to defend well and move the ball confidently.

Before she moved to the U.K. to take an M.A. in filmmaking in 2010, Ana Rocha left behind a long and respectable acting career in her native Portugal. This year sees the first fruits of that career change with her directorial debut “Listen,” which premieres Tuesday at the Venice Film Festival, competing in the Horizons section. Shot last summer in London’s East End, the film deals with the little-known issue of forced adoptions and tells the story an immigrant couple, played by Lúcia Moniz and Ruben Garcia, whose deaf daughter (newcomer Maisie Sly) comes to the attentions of social services after a misunderstanding at school.
