The history of television is fascinating because you can trace lines between almost any modern show and one of the classics, as crews move from one show to another, bringing their past work and their influences with them. This applies to both live-action and animation. In the latter, many animators who start as writers or storyboard artists in one show end up creating their own series years later, bringing colleagues along with them, who then go on to create their own shows in return. Take "Dexter's Laboratory" launching the career of not just Genndy Tartakovsky, but also Craig McCracken, Rob Renzetti, Butch Hartman, and Seth MacFarlane, each going on to make a popular show.
What "Dexter's Laboratory" did in the '90s, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" did in the late 2000s. This is a show that helped launch several animation careers, with plenty of writers and storyboard artists...

Released back in 2018 as a mobile game, Among Us became a global hit and one of the most popular games ever. There aren’t many people who can say that they’ve hadn’t played Among Us, as it was a truly global hit and a game that was intriguing on many levels. Windows and platform versions of the game have also been released, thus expanding the franchise and making the game available to more people.
The series became so popular that a one-shot manga based on it was released, and later on – in June 2023 – it was confirmed that the video game would also be getting an animated series adaptation, which will follow the characters from the game in a new adventure while staying true to the spirit of the original video game. This October, in addition to the expected host of horror films and ritual “Over The Garden Wall” rewatches (you know who you are), there are some breakout performances on the horizon. Maybe the best cinematic reaction in “Lessons in Chemistry” (starting on Apple TV+ October 13) comes from Lewis Pullman, while Caelie Spaeny more than holds her own against Jacob Elordi’s Elvis in “Priscilla.” Pullman and Spaeny share a credit in common, in fact: a film celebrating its five-year anniversary on October 12 and one that, in many ways, created a blueprint for some of the most inventive storytelling we’ve seen in the years since.

At long last we seem to be clawing our way out of the sticky summer months into the crisp embrace of fall. And with the change in seasons comes my favorite autumn tradition, a viewing of Over the Garden Wall! This mini-series (originally aired on Cartoon Network in 2014) is the perfect way to get into the spooky season mood, and I’d love to have you join me and Derek Anderson as we host a Twitch Watch Party on Monday, October 2nd at 8pm Est.
For those unfamiliar with the series, Over the Garden Wall follows young Wirt (Elijah Wood) and his younger brother Greg (Collin Dean) as they find themselves lost in a mysterious forest. To get out they’re going to need to get through encounters with anthropomorphic jack o’lanterns, haunted houses, mysterious witches, and a dark beast with malevolent intentions, all while figuring out how they...

There is an intricate balance when it comes to animated performances, with animators and voice actors working together to create memorable characters. Remove one of the two elements, and you get a completely different character. Look at Mark Hamill as Joker in "Batman: The Animated Series," Dante Basco as Zuko in "Avatar: The Last Airbender," or Robin Williams as Genie in "Aladdin": These characters work because of the team of animators infusing the characters with life, and because of the unique personality the actors bring to the roles (even if Williams' casting ended up causing a whole lot of problems).

If you’re a fan of Mel Gibson’s classic action flicks, be sure to stream them before they leave Max at the end of August.
All four “Lethal Weapon” movies and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” starring the late, great Tina Turner, will be leaving the streaming service. Luckily, you’ll have all month to watch them.
Watching the new “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” animated movie in theaters? Max has several films featuring the radical reptilians: the live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” (1991)
and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III” (1993), as well as the animated “Tmnt” (2007).
Kaiju fans will want to check out “Godzilla” (2014), “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (2019), “King Kong” (1933) and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” (2012).
Finally, if horror is your thing, six “Hellraiser” films and “The Ring Two” make great summer scares.

It’s not hard to see how reality is often stranger than fiction on this big blue marble we live on. On social media, on new sites, and on communal forums, it’s merely a stone’s throw to the next unbelievably real story that’s happened in the world of today’s culture. The people who have already brought the hyper realities of shows like Rick and Morty and Community now present an AppleTV+ animated series that challenges our strange world. The new trailer for Strange Planet is unleashed and gives us a look at the new show that is set to debut globally with the first three episodes on Wednesday, August 9, 2023.
The official synopsis from AppleTV+ reads,

With its 11 Best Animated Program wins and 24 Emmy victories elsewhere, “The Simpsons” certainly isn’t hurting for attention from the TV academy. Nevertheless, the clear consensus among Gold Derby users is that it’s time for the Fox staple to triumph in the top animation category once more. Its dozenth animated program win would specifically be for its 33rd annual “Treehouse of Horror” episode, which would only be the fourth one ever nominated there. At this point, the series’ Halloween specials have brought it no competitive Emmys at all, but that will finally change if our odds prove correct.
The newest special, “Treehouse of Horror Xxxiii,” aired one day before Halloween 2022 and, as usual, consists of three unrelated segments. It is the first without an opening scene and the second (after Season 27’s) to have been directly preceded by a non-“Treehouse of Horror” Halloween episode (“Not It”). This article contains spoilers for Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio."
Guillermo del Toro made something truly magical with his adaptation of the classic children's tale, "Pinocchio." The stop-motion film is a loving interpretation of Carlo Collodi's original novel from 1883, based largely on the original source material rather than the Disney animated feature from 1940 that has dominated the public's consciousness of what a "Pinocchio" story looks like. Del Toro spent over a decade trying to bring his vision to life, with the streaming juggernaut Netflix helping push the film across the finish line, with the final product becoming the best Netflix original release of 2022. "Pinocchio" is a stunning, inventive, and heartwarming story about a wooden puppet who magically comes to life, but del Toro made one major, and welcome change to the beloved tale.

This post contains spoilers for "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio."
"Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio" cobbles together the best elements of del Toro's work into a moving, bittersweet stop-motion animated film about the preciousness of life. Fans of the horror maestro's work will find his familiar themes — outsiders, existentialism, anti-war, anti-fascism — take center stage in this magical tale about a wooden puppet (Gregory Mann) destined to heal the broken heart of a grieving man named Geppetto (David Bradley). But unlike previous adaptations, Pinocchio's origin story has more of a Frankenstein's monster feel to him. As Pinocchio learns what it means to be human, the audience becomes tasked with unraveling how humane we are or could be -- a compelling premise for all ages.
Co-directed by del Toro and Mark Gustafson and co-written by del Toro and Patrick McHale ("Over the Garden Wall"), "Pinocchio" wastes no time setting up its dark opening.

Horror fans have to start somewhere. You don’t just watch a VHS copy of Cannibal Holocaust and immediately start loving the genre (or at least I hope not), and that’s why Gateway Horror is so important. Like training wheels for spooky media, these stories are meant to introduce audiences to the recurring tropes and iconography of the genre without necessarily resulting in nightmare fuel. That being said, a lot of horror fans mistake that sentiment for Gateway Horror not being allowed to be scary, which simply isn’t true.
The ideal Gateway Horror story works on multiple levels, with creepy elements light enough to avoid traumatizing the casual viewer but ideas scary enough to entertain even the most jaded of horror hounds. To me, the perfect example of this exceedingly difficult balance is Cartoon Network’s Over the Garden Wall, a 2014 mini-series that explores the horrors of the Unknown through innocent eyes.

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” reimagines the classic fantasy tale through the most beautifully-made stop-motion animation in years, a powerful and life-affirming father-and-son story about acceptance and love in the face of pain, misery, and fascism, and the filmmaker’s love of monsters in what is .
The film is set in 1930s Italy, as fascism is sweeping the nation. It’s not easy to break into the Emmy race for Best Animated Program for a show’s first season. Just ask the people behind “Family Guy,” “Archer” and “BoJack Horseman.” But this year, Netflix’s “Arcane” was able to do it and could very well win the prize for its first year of eligibility, becoming the first one to do so since “Over the Garden Wall” in 2015. In order to claim victory, the show will have to beat back three other programs with multiple wins in the category and another freshman series that’s based on the biggest property in cinema.

There's a strange thing that happens in Hollywood more often than one might imagine. Two projects get greenlit that aren't just similar, but pull from nearly the same source material. Though this often happens in early stages of projects, like when a wild story suddenly becomes a hot commodity, it's rare that both versions actually end up being born into the world at the same time.
Yet there are times when years of brainstorming, production, and post-production somehow ultimately align, leading to near-simultaneous releases that look intentionally competitive, even if they're not. This is what seems to be happening with "Pinocchio," a classic story that's somehow receiving two very distinct adaptations this fall. While one will debut in September and remake a family film we know and love, the other hits theaters in November and pull inspiration from the darker Italian novel of the same name. Elijah Wood, best known for his turn as Frodo in Peter Jackson‘s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, has been working as an actor now for nearly 20 years, and his work has grown increasingly eclectic over the past decade. From his performances in shows such as the bizarrely funny “Wilfred”, horror films like “Maniac” and voice work for the charmingly offbeat animated series “Over the Garden Wall,” he’s had no shortage of interesting career turns.

Last Year’s Winner: “Rick and Morty”
Still Eligible: No.
Hot Streak: The Best Animated Program category hasn’t seen a repeat winner since the category was divided into “One Hour or Less” and “More Than One Hour” divisions, and “South Park” took home the latter prize in 2008 (for its “Imaginationland” episodes) and the former in 2009 (for “Margaritaville”). That being said, “Rick and Morty” has won both times it was nominated (in 2018 and 2020), so one could argue it’s a dominant force whenever it’s eligible.
Fun Fact: “The Simpsons” and “South Park” are the only two programs to win more than two trophies in this category. The iconic Fox series has 11 wins (most recently in 2019) while Comedy Central’s landmark program has five wins (with the last coming in 2013). With one more win, still-active shows like “Bob’s Burgers” and “Rick and Morty” could become the third to join these elite ranks.

Brian Jacques’ beloved “Redwall” books are being adapted into a feature film and TV series thanks to a new rights deal between Netflix and Penguin Random House Children. The fantasy novels have sold 30 million copies globally and have attracted an avid following with their tales of heroism, villainy and derring do all played out by mice, moles, hares and badgers. Think J.R.R. Tolkien with cuddlier protagonists.
Netflix announced it has enlisted Patrick McHale, creator of Cartoon Network’s “Over the Garden Wall,” to write the feature film. That film will be based on Jacques’ first book in the series, “Redwall”. Netflix is also developing an event series based on the character of Martin the Warrior.
The deal marks the first time that the film rights to the entire book series have been held by the same company and the first time a feature film of any of Jacques’ works will be made.

Netflix has snapped up the rights to Brian Jacques’ entire series of Redwall books and is plotting an animated feature film and TV series based on the animal adventure franchise.
Netflix inked a deal with Penguin Random House Children for the rights to the books, which have sold 30 million copies worldwide and chronicle the adventures of the heroic animals that inhabit the forest haven of Redwall Abbey.
It is the first time that the film rights to the entire series of books have been held by one company and Netflix has already set to work adapting the stories, signing up Patrick McHale to write a feature. McHale created Cartoon Network’s Over the Garden Wall and is working on Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.
Netflix is also plotting a TV series based on the character of Martin the Warrior, a wise and ferocious mouse who co-founded Redwall Abbey along with Abbess Germaine.

Although it still has a long way to go to catch up to Netflix, HBO Max is gradually building a reputation for both an impressive library of content and its own original programming. As well as reportedly working on a number of Batman-focused series, the WarnerMedia streamer is also absorbing shows from DC Universe, and funding the Snyder Cut of Justice League. We now know what’s coming to HBO Max in September, and there’s plenty there for subscribers to sink their teeth into.
The big original series highlight next month is the Ridley Scott-produced Raised by Wolves, which explores two androids raising human children. Created by Adam Guzikowski, the program could be one of HBO Max’s first big hits with critics and audiences, and is set to arrive on September 3rd. Elijah Wood is such a delightfully odd ambassador of the horror genre. Of course most people know that he’s been in show business for decades, from starting out as a child actor to his minor hit about some short fellows trying to toss some jewelry into a volcano. As he’s gotten older, though, his love of the horror genre has blossomed professionally, both as an actor as well as through his very horror-friendly production company, SpectreVison. And through his whole career he’s maintained a warm, genuine personality that we in the horror community keep trying to tell mainstream pop culture is more the rule than the exception.
Wood’s boyish charm is complemented by a face that looks virtually unchanged from his childhood, and he uses both elements to terrific effect in his horror roles, either leveraging it to evoke sympathy as the hero in movies like...

Fresh off his Oscar win for “The Shape of Water,” Guillermo del Toro is set to make his animated feature film directing debut. Del Toro has received the green light from Netflix to film “Pinocchio,” a stop motion musical version of the classic children’s tale about a puppet who wants to be a real live boy. He will write and produce the film in addition to directing it.
The film will be set in Italy during the 1930s, a particularly fraught historical moment and a time when fascism was on the rise and Benito Mussolini was consolidating control of the country. Production on “Pinocchio” will begin this fall. Del Toro previously set “The Devil’s Backbone” and “Pan’s Labyrinth” against a totalitarian backdrop, although he placed those stories in Franco’s Spain.
