Lionsgate has unveiled plans for a new Hunger Games movie, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, based on franchise writer Suzanne Collins’ just-announced new novel.
The screen adaptation, unveiled on Thursday by Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, has Francis Lawrence in talks to direct the adaptation for Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson’s Color Force banner. Lawrence, screenwriter Michael Arndt and producer Jacobson earlier teamed with Lionsgate on four film adaptations of earlier Collins books — The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay — that took in $3.3 billion in box office.
Collins and her publisher Scholastic announced the fifth book in the series Thursday. Scholastic will publish Sunrise on the Reaping simultaneously in print, digital and audio formats in North America and other English-speaking territories on March 18, 2025.
There’s no word yet on casting for the film, but Lionsgate has set a wide theatrical release on Nov.

The Divergent movies have arrived on Netflix, and fans can finally watch the journey of Shailene Woodley’s Tris Prior as she navigates the dystopian world where people are divided into factions. The first installment hit the big screen in 2014 and was followed by two more sequels.
Theo James, Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley in Insurgent / Lionsgate Films
Apparently, one actor who auditioned for the role of Tobias Eaton, aka Four, was initially rejected before joining the franchise for another part. In the end, he enjoyed being the antagonist rather than leading a failed franchise.
Miles Teller Shares Audition Story For Divergent
During his interview with Vulture, actor Miles Teller shared how he joined the Divergent movies. He revealed originally going for Four, but he failed to win the part.
I auditioned for Four originally and maybe, yeah, that would have been cool to do. But it’s nice to play against type.

After the Harry Potter franchise concluded in 2011, the filmmakers attempted to fill the young adult movie niche. The new fashion of the 2010s became a series of teen dystopian movies, headed by The Hunger Games that was a huge success back in 2012.
Based on Suzanne Collins’ novels, it set the bar quite high for similar movie adaptations, however, the subsequent big screen versions of the hyped bestsellers clearly lacked its wholesomeness. These include the 2014 sci-fi action flick that followed in Thg’s footsteps.
Set in post-apocalyptic America, the movie centers on Tris, a 16-year-old girl whose fate is about to be decided. The point is the new dystopian society is divided into four factions based on human virtues: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite.
Born and raised as a member of Abnegation, Tris should choose which faction is going to be her new home, but before that she is warned...

In 2014, Naomi Watts voiced an animated version of herself in the “BoJack Horseman” episode “One Trick Pony.” The Watts in Hollywoo — the “BoJack” stand-in for the entertainment industry’s epicenter, inhabited mostly by anthropomorphic animals — is starring opposite BoJack in a biopic about his frenemy, Mr. Peanutbutter. She appears on set preparing to play Diane, a burgeoning writer. The meta joke is the actress accepted the part to get a break from emotionally draining, praiseworthy performances.
“I just keep getting pigeonholed as these complex characters in highly acclaimed movies,” the animated Watts bemoans to a character who is a parody of host Ryan Seacrest (A Ryan Seacrest Type). “For once, I would just love to phone it in and play a two-dimensional girl in a rom-com with no inner life of her own. That’s kind of the reason I got into this business.”
Ten years later, that tongue-in-cheek guest appearance now feels almost prophetic.

Divergent star Shailene Woodley has some dietary and beauty habits that would seem extremely weird to others. Her unusual diet includes eating one thing that, well, humans don’t consume in general. However, she took up the practice of eating clay after hearing about it from an African cab driver. This man told The Spectacular Now actress that even the pregnant woman in his culture would eat the clay and acquire great benefits from it.

"This isn't your territory. It's their territory." Another international remake of a Hollywood classic! China has already remade the 1997 action-horror film about giant snakes called Anaconda, which was a huge hit when it debuted in the 90s. This new version is similar but follows a group of circus performers stranded in a rainforest. They must figure out how to survive when they discover they're marked as bait for the snakes. This Chinese remake stars Terence Yin, Nita Xia, Paul Che, Jiu Kong, Ken Lok, Wang Xing Chen, Wang Gang, Wang Zi Run, Xu Shao Hang, and Wu Hao. The original movie ended up with a few bad direct-to-video sequels (including Lake Placid vs. Anaconda in 2015) and Hollywood has also been trying to reboot it with screenwriter Evan Daugherty hired to write a new script. Until then, this Chinese version might be just as ridiculously entertaining as the original, which infamously...

If you grew up in the '90s, there's no way you could have escaped the cultural impact of "X-Men: The Animated Series." Alongside fellow Fox Kids superhero shows "Batman: The Animated Series" and "Spider-Man," the X-Men's animated adventures represented a true high point for superhero animation at the close of the century. Of course, it helped that the mutant team came armed with one of the most undeniably cool theme songs of all time. But the show itself was, much like the aforementioned Batman and the Spidey cartoons, memorable for not treating kids like dummies and including some pretty mature storylines and themes. As such, "X-Men: The Animated Series" left an indelible mark on kids around the globe with its 1992-'97 run.
Now, Disney is capitalizing on that popularity with "X-Men '97," which is set to debut on the Disney+ streaming service on March 20, 2024. Ahead of the release...

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

Shailene Woodley once led her own blockbuster franchise in the Divergent series. But despite the movies belonging to the sci-fi action genre, Woodley was hesitant to label her character an action hero.

Woodley joined the ranks of many female action stars when she was cast in the Divergent series. It was an opportunity that she was well aware of when she climbed on board the young adult series. But she also believed Divergent could help make female action heroes more relevant in the film industry again.
“I feel like we’ve skipped a generation,” Woodley once told Bust. “We had, like, the Ashley Judds, the Sigourney Weavers, the Demi Moores, and then it sort of faded and went into [a period of] making women appear dumb, like they had no worth in the intelligence arena.

YA is dead — at least, that was one prevailing thought after a string of popular young adult books failed to garner success on screens in 2016. Studio executives blamed the slew of unsuccessful adaptations on a new generation of readers no longer interested in coming-of-age stories. But as YA film and TV once again take top billing and viewership for the first time in nearly a decade, several YA authors who dominated the category tell Rolling Stone interest in young people’s stories never waned — filmmakers and executives finally realized they...

Recently, it was announced that Dave Filoni would step into the role of chief creative officer at Lucasfilm, indicating a more hands-on approach to shaping upcoming Star Wars projects. Despite numerous projects in the pipeline, one that remains unconfirmed officially is the second season of ‘Ahsoka.’ Given that Filoni penned the first season, he’s the go-to person for insights into the future narrative.
In an episode of EW’s ‘Dagobah Dispatch’ podcast, Filoni not only addressed the potential second season but also delved into the late Ray Stevenson’s role and the challenges arising from his passing, considering his significant part in the story. As a quick recap, Stevenson’s character, Baylan Skoll, left his intentions ambiguous in the first season’s finale, leaving fans speculating about his plans as he stood before the statues of Mortis Gods on Peridea. Filoni characterized Baylan Skoll as a character driven by dangerous ambition.

A few days ago, massive news landed that Dave Filoni was selected as a chief creative officer for Lucasfilm, meaning that he would take a more active role in the development of upcoming Star Wars projects, and we know that there are plenty of projects in the works. However, one project that still hasn’t been confirmed in an official sense is ‘Ahsoka’ season 2, as the first season was successful and ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger.
Filoni himself wrote ‘Ahsoka,’ so he is the best person to ask what’s going to happen in the future and how the story will move forward. In EW’s Dagobah Dipatch podcast, Filoni commented on the potential second season of the show, as well as the late Ray Stevenson and the potential problems that will now arise with his passing, as he was always intended to be a massive part of the story.

[This story contains spoilers for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.]
Prequels are tough to get right. For every Better Call Saul, there are ten more stories that failed to enrich the works that came before them. However, Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes manages to not only stand on its own, but as a prequel, it also deepens the text of the Hunger Games films starring Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen.
The filmmaker chalks it up to the strength of author Suzanne Collins’ source material, as well as the performances of his two leads, Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler. In one of the climactic scenes of the film, Blyth has to sell Coriolanus Snow’s transformation that would later define Donald Sutherland’s tyrannical version of the character, and Lawrence remains in awe of what the young actor accomplished with minimal dialogue.

“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” began its domestic box office sprint with $5.75 million in Thursday preview showings. That’s well below, understandably, the $16 million earned via preview showings of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II” in November of 2015. However, it’s on par with the first two “Divergent” films earned in their respective Thursday preview showings, $4.9 million in 2014 and $4.1 million in 2015. Both Shailene Woodley-starring sci-fi fantasies opened above $50 million in their respective opening weekends. That’s the hope for this Rachel Zegler and Tom Blyth-starring prequel to the blockbuster Jennifer Lawrence-starring “Hunger Games” quadrilogy.
The film deals with the backstory of how eventual President Snow (played by Tom Blyth) tried to follow the side of righteousness amid an authoritarian regime that had smashed the hopes of his once powerful family. Snow finds himself as a mentor to District 12 contestant Lucy Grey (Rachel Zegler...

After nearly a decade, one of the biggest YA franchises is making its return to the big screen. Lionsgate couldn't have jumped faster when author Suzanne Collins announced a prequel novel to her smash hit "Hunger Games" series, with the studio cutting a deal to turn the book into a movie in the blink of an eye. That movie is now upon us in the form of "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes." Taking place decades before the original films, the prequel is focused on a young Coriolanus Snow. The question is, do audiences care as much without Katniss Everdeen out front and center? Can this movie recapture some of that box office magic from years past?

After a terrific October, things settled down for the first weekend of November, as few major studios wanted to open the holiday movie season, and no new movies opened in more than 1,500 theaters. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Some might remember that this weekend was when Warner Bros had planned to release “Dune Part II” until the decision was made a few months back to move it to 2024. So far, that move hasn’t benefitted anyone much, at least not in terms of box office.
After setting a number of records last weekend, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” took a massive plunge in its second weekend, probably not helped by the fact that it was already streaming on Peacock. Still, it was able to remain #1 with an estimated $19.4 million, down 76% from its opening weekend, to bring its North American total to $113.6 million. The PG-13 horror movie added another...

Helena (Daisy Ridley), the title character of “The Marsh King’s Daughter,” is a woman living what she thinks is a safe, comfortable middle-class existence — just like the heroes of “Cape Fear” or “Straw Dogs.” And like those characters, she’s ripped out of her cocoon by a man with a vengeful agenda. In this case, the self-righteous stalker-invader is her father, Jacob (Ben Mendelsohn), who raised her in a cabin in the marshland wilderness of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, teaching her how to hunt and survive. In the film’s early scenes, we might almost be watching some off-the-grid version of the Laura Ingalls Wilder story, as Helena drinks in the woodland skills taught by Jacob, with each lesson marked by a homemade tattoo (he inks a deer on her neck when she gets her first kill).

In 2018, Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie starred in a wilderness drama called Leave No Trace in which a father taught his daughter to live off the grid well out of view of “civilization.” I thought of that as I viewed the new thriller The Marsh King’s Daughter, but for some reason this story kept reminding me more of 1962’s terrifying suspense drama Cape Fear, as well as its Martin Scorsese-directed 1991 remake. Maybe it is just because of the remote setting and a key character who comes back and sparks terror in the hearts of a family that didn’t know what they were in for.
Jacob (Ben Mendelsohn) is known as the elusive Marsh King, a man who kidnaps a young woman named Beth (Caren Pistorius) and takes her to the remote marshlands of Michigan, where he torments her and becomes father to their daughter Helena (Brooklynn Prince...

Hollywood moviemaking has always been a numbers game, and right now the winning number appears to be two.
Zack Snyder is locking picture on part one of December’s Rebel Moon, his two-part space opera for Netflix. Christopher McQuarrie, the filmmaker behind Paramount and Skydance’s Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One, retreated to a house in the northeast in recent months to edit what he’s shot so far of his follow-up. And once the SAG-AFTRA strike ends, Wicked filmmaker Jon M. Chu has just a few days left of principal photography on the first of his two Broadway adaptations. Then there’s Dune: Part Two (delayed by the strike until March), a sequel to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (no release date in sight) and Kevin Costner’s two-part western Horizon, hitting theaters six weeks apart next summer.
These two-parters can serve both art and commerce, say those who work on them.

The final book “Allegiant” was set to be split into two films, with the first releasing in 2016; the second part, however, never made it to the big screen. Roth said she that she has accepted this fact, given that she felt the films were going in a different direction than her novels.
“I mean, breaking things in two was all the rage at the time. That was why that decision was made,” Roth said. “But at that point, I think I always felt peace about it just because I knew the movies were taking a different track than the books, and if you change the lead up, you change the ending. So I kind of felt...

Of all the film series to come out of the young adult fad, "The Hunger Games" is the best. "The Maze Runner" might have better action and set pieces, but "The Hunger Games" is narratively richer. It's also an excellent beginner's guide to how rebellions are formed in the real world, which has kept the franchise feeling uncomfortably topical in the years since it last graced the big screen. There's a reason why a "Hunger Games" revival in 2023 makes loads more sense than rebooting "Twilight" or redoing any of the myriad of failed sci-fi YA novel adaptations that followed in its wake.
There was, however, one unfortunate YA trend that "The Hunger Games" fell victim to, and that was dividing its finale into two parts. Even then, the series fared better than others. Splitting "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay" in two allowed "Part 1" to dig deeper into the revolution against the...

Winslet was more than intrigued by the role she was offered in Divergent. Her character Jeanine being so vile was one of the main reasons she decided to contribute to the sci-fi franchise.
“The novelty of that was definitely the most thrilling, really, but also playing a character who could be many versions of nasty — there is lot that is sinister about her. That, as an actor, provided me with a platform to have a lot of fun and try lots of different things,” she once told Time.
But at the same time, the Titanic star found something alluring about playing a character that powerful.
