Both on the awards circuit and in the public consciousness, HBO is widely regarded as among the first Hollywood heavyweights to recognize that television, as a medium, had the power to deliver sprawling, large scale stories on a smaller screen. From HBO’s ascent in the late 1990s through its dragon-aided roar across the 2010s, the network’s original series tackled universal stories, stretching across continents and decades.
The network hasn’t been without controversy, though. HBO faced questions about its lack of diversity in flagship series, including “Game of Thrones” and “Girls,” throughout the 2010s. And, unshackled from the restrictions of broadcast TV, the various steps the network took to push the limit of what’s allowed on screen garnered a fair share of pearl-clutching headlines; see “The Sopranos” in the ’90s and “Euphoria” just a few years back. And since the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger, there’s...

One of the most bizarre TV series to ever air since David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: The Return,” and certainly one of the oddest shows of this decade, is Showtime’s “The Curse,” which could potentially have more in store.
Created by deadpan comedian Nathan Fielder and filmmaker Benny Safdie (“Uncut Gems”) and starring Fielder and Emma Stone (both of them also executive producers along with Safdie), “The Curse,” which premiered last fall on Showtime, is a satirical black comedy thriller.

The Curse began with an actual curse, or at least the threat of one. When Nathan Fielder first moved from Canada to L.A. in 2009, a woman approached him on the street asking for a handout. He told her he had no money. She replied, “I curse you.”
That anecdote, described by Fielder to pal Benny Safdie, was the seed for one of the most startling and innovative shows in recent memory. Fielder, whose spins on reality TV in shows like HBO’s The Rehearsal have earned him a devoted fan base (Christopher Nolan among them), and Safdie (who, with brother and ex-directing partner Josh, made Uncut Gems) cooked up a bitter black comedy that in part skewered HGTV programming. The duo cast themselves as childhood friends — one of them, Asher Siegel (Fielder), a nebbish, budding reality star burdened with a micropenis — making a pilot about a couple trying to...

‘Succession’ has gone out with one final bang: The HBO drama won two Writers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night — the most of any series — for best drama series and also for best drama episode. Creator Jesse Armstrong was on hand in New York to accept the award, while several of the show’s writers were also in LA to accept the honor.
This reps the final major awards show where “Succession” (which ended its run last May) was still eligible. Besides best drama, the show also won the episodic drama prize, for the episode “Living+,” written by Georgia Pritchett and Will Arbery.
The WGA Awards recognized the best of 2023’s television and film via its annual event held this year at the Hollywood Palladium for the West Coast edition and at New York’s Edison Ballroom for the East Coast ceremony.

What a difference one season can make. Stand-up comedy is a public performance that gives the illusion of intimate spontaneity. This is equally true of reality television, so it’s natural that a master at the former would try his hand at the latter. Such is the origin story of “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show,” a self-reflexive — and self-explanatory — HBO project that follows Carmichael’s award-winning special “Rothaniel” with an even more extended look at the comic’s later-in-life coming out and its effect on his closest relationships. Just don’t call the series unfiltered. “This is not truth,” a friend reminds Carmichael, and by extension, us. “This is narrative.”
“Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show” is not the first time a professional jokester has blurred the line between entertainment and actual life. Carmichael himself cites “The Truman Show” as an inspiration; more recently, works like Nathan Fielder’s “The Rehearsal” and Bo Burnham’s “Inside” have called attention to their own artificial nature,...

Niecy Nash-Betts, who recently won an Emmy for her role on Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” has signed on to host the Los Angeles portion of next month’s Writers Guild Awards. The 2024 event, which was pushed back in the wake of the Hollywood strikes, will take place on Saturday, April 14 at the Hollywood Palladium.
“A good writer is an actors’ greatest gift,” Nash-Betts said in a statement. Added L.A. awards exec producer Hugh Fink (“Saturday Night Live”): “Niecy Nash-Betts is the dream host for this year’s WGA Awards. Her brilliant performance in ‘Dahmer’ – as the courageous woman who helped take down a serial killer who ate his victims – is surprisingly a lot like negotiating with the AMPTP.”
Benn Fleishman of Avalon Harbor Entertainment is also a producer for this year’s WGA Awards in Los Angeles. Additional presenters scheduled to appear at this year’s L.

Some solutions to the housing crisis are more creative than others. For a group of artists in Providence, Rhode Island, that idea was put to the test when they infiltrated and inhabited a hidden alcove in their local mall for four years — a symbol of gentrification they repurposed into a decidedly anticapitalist communal space. The aptly named “Secret Mall Apartment,” directed by Jeremy Workman and executive produced by Jesse Eisenberg, is a thoughtful celebration of the DIY artistry behind that experiment, but only a so-so investigation of it.
Like a lot of great plans, this one was barely planned at all. After he and three of his friends decided to see who could pull off living inside Providence Place Mall the longest, Michael Townsend, drawing on a random memory of the building’s construction four years earlier, recalled a “nowhere space” where he and his cohort might find shelter: a...

Alexei Navalny’s sacrifice for democracy is being recognized in the place where the concept of government by the people first flourished.
Greece’s Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival programmed the documentary Navalny in honor of the Russian opposition leader and democratic reformer, who died in an Arctic prison in northern Russia on February 16. The film directed by Daniel Roher won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature almost exactly a year ago.
Navalny examines the anti-corruption crusader’s effort to investigate an incident in 2020 in which he fell grievously ill after being secretly dosed with the neurotoxin Novichok. With help from a Bulgarian investigative journalist, Navalny determined the assassination plot had been implemented by Kremlin agents. After recuperating in Germany, Navalny made the fateful decision to return to Russia in 2021, whereupon he was immediately arrested and later tried and imprisoned.

Fans of Nathan Fielder know how a little bit too good he is at making you feel uncomfortable. The comedic actor has an incredibly dry delivery with the bravery and commitment of someone like Sasha Baron Cohen, whom Fielder has actually worked with on Who is America? Fielder’s Comedy Central show, Nathan For You, brought his illustrious brand of cringe comedy to a grand audience, and HBO’s The Rehearsal took it to a new level. Recently, Fielder has partnered with Benny Safdie to try his hand at more scripted narrative comedy with the abstract Showtime series The Curse, which paired Fielder up with Emma Stone.
The response to The Curse has been naturally divisive. However, one vocal supporter of the show, whom people may not have seen coming is Christopher Nolan. According to Variety, the Academy Award-nominated director of Oppenheimer recently moderated a Q&a for the show...

Christopher Nolan moderated a Q&a with Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie to discuss “The Curse,” the satirical comedy series starring Fielder and Emma Stone from Showtime and Paramount+, following a screening of the first episode. The “Oppenheimer” director said the show is “unlike anything I’ve ever seen on television before.”
“There are so few shows that come along that genuinely have no precedents,” Nolan said. “I mean, you’re going back to things like ‘Twin Peaks’ or ‘The Prisoner’ or Dennis Potter’s ‘Singing Detective’ — things like that. So you’re in an amazing space, and I can’t wait for audiences to catch up with the climax.”
Nolan also praised Fielder’s HBO series “The Rehearsal” and Safdie’s filmography with his brother Josh.

Honor Swinton Byrne (“The Souvenir”) and Greta Bellamacina (“Tell That To The Winter”) are set to star in Jaclyn Bethany’s upcoming feature film “All Five Eyes.”
Co-written by Bethany and Bellamacina, the film tells the story of Marion (Swinton Byrne) and Cecily (Bellamacina) as they care for their disabled younger sister Willa. It is set to shoot in the U.K. in August.
Set in a small English village in 1967, liberated Marion is exploring the new social freedoms enjoyed by women in the late 1960s while conscientious and self-conscious Cecily runs the local girls school and is Willa’s main carer.
“Their differences reach a boiling point over their relationship with Willa, which leads to each sister making their own decision on what it means to have a life worth living,” reads the logline.
The screenplay was informed by Bellamacina’s own experience of caring for a child with autism.

This post contains spoilers for this week’s episode of The Curse, now streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime.
After a few midseason episodes that raised questions of whether this was all going somewhere interesting — or, at least, whether Fielder, Safdie, and company had enough to say to fill 10 hours — the story finally gets moving again with “Self-Exclusion,” as the Seigel marriage starts to crack wide open.
Early on, we see Whitney once again reaching out to Cara. She’s still blind to the fact that Cara plain doesn’t like her.

Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie are the heads behind Showtime and A24’s mind-bending reality TV satire “The Curse,” currently heading into its fifth episode on December 10. But just a few days prior, the creative duo received the Wavelength Award at the IndieWire Honors event at NeueHouse Hollywood on December 6, hosted by Dewayne Perkins.
At the event, they were in characteristic improvisatory, slightly off-kilter (and off-putting) style, with “The Rehearsal” creator Fielder starting off his acceptance speech, in deadpan droll, “It’s very nice. Thank you so much for this. We both are big fans of this website and all the content. It’s such an honor to be given the Wavelength Award because, especially just speaking personally for someone like me, it’s very hard to get on the same wavelength as another person. On December 6, the 2023 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate 11 filmmakers, creators, and actors for their achievements in creative independence. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles event.
“I think murder is illegal. I think you can’t murder people.”
That’s Nathan Fielder, using his signature deadpan delivery to land a joke about the complexities of modern legalese. Sitting in an unadorned room somewhere in Los Angeles, with gray stubble to match the streaks in his dark, disheveled hair, the writer, director, and comedian was just explaining how, exactly, they got away with name-checking HGTV in “The Curse” — a series satirizing, among other targets, the kind of home improvement shows that built the cable channel into a reality TV juggernaut.

“Jury Duty” is a reality show. Or is it a sitcom? A documentary? An elaborate prank?
How about all of the above?
One of 2023’s defining breakouts, the Amazon Freevee series is the crown jewel of an ascendant hybrid genre sometimes referred to as docu-comedy. Even the people who made the show aren’t sure how to classify it. Director Jake Syzmanski and co-creator Lee Eisenberg say they’ve never heard that term. Eisenberg suggested hidden-camera comedy, but that’s not really accurate either, as everyone involved knew they were being filmed. Robyn Adams, a producer, used “outlined improv.” Whatever nomenclature best applies, this increasingly common format has enjoyed a banner year, with “Jury Duty,” Peacock’s “Paul T. Goldman,” BBC and Netflix’s “Cunk on Earth,” and HBO’s “How To with John Wilson” picking up where the likes of Sacha Baron Cohen and Nathan Fielder left off.

Showtime’s new limited series “The Curse,” comes from the inspired, perhaps unlikely, trio of actor/producer Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), comedian/filmmaker Nathan Fielder (“The Rehearsal”), and writer/director Benny Safdie—half of the directing duo The Safdie Brothers, known for “Uncut Gems.” But the true shorthand to understanding the hilarious, odd, sometimes downright bizarre series is its overwhelming sense of cringe-worthy discomfort.

On November 10, 2023, “The Curse” premiered on Paramount+ (and two days later on Showtime) starring Oscar winner Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder as a newlywed couple trying to conceive a child while co-starring on their problematic new HGTV show. The new comedy series was written by Fielder and Benny Safdie, who co-stars as the couple’s HGTV show producer.
With predominantly positive reviews, the series has amassed a score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics consensus reads, “A wickedly uncomfortable marriage of sensibilities between Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, with a masterful Emma Stone tying everything together, ‘The Curse’ will make viewers cackle and squirm in equal measure.”

Throughout his television career, Nathan Fielder has built two separate but overlapping images of himself. The first, his on-screen persona, is that of a stone-faced comedian who constantly places himself and others in uncomfortable situations, flubbing something as basic as a high-five or a polite joke, sometimes chastising a subject over a minor misstep. The second, as a philosopher of modern life, is that of a reality TV genius who uses the medium to comment on the nature of media consumption, what it means to “represent reality” in such shows, and the ethics of putting real people and their troubles in front of an audience.
The experimental HBO series The Rehearsal provided plenty of fuel for debates about whether or not Fielder was exploiting his subjects, regardless of their TV-ready antics and their signing release forms. Of course, such debates were at the heart of the series itself, as Fielder...

The Curse is like a clash of the cringe titans. Nathan Fielder is known for uncomfortably awkward prank comedies like Nathan For You and The Rehearsal, and Benny Safdie, along with his brother Josh, is known for uncomfortably tense crime dramas like Uncut Gems and Good Time. So it makes sense that when Fielder and Safdie team up for Showtime’s new dramedy — premiering this Sunday at 10/9c and streaming this Friday on Paramount+; I’ve seen the first four episodes — the result is almost unbearably uncomfortable. A deeply unsettling fusion of Fielder and Safdie’s distinctive styles, The Curse...

Asher recites the assertion like a mantra, and really, who could blame him? The newly married couple moved to the struggling New Mexico community of Española not just to build a life for themselves, but to better the entire town. Whitney’s passive homes are eco-friendly; she designed them to carry a negligible environmental footprint, and she’s working to tear down old, abandoned houses that will be replaced with her new, dynamic homes. Asher handles the paperwork — buying and selling, construction contracts, etc. — and together, they’re shooting a pilot for HGTV that will spread the word about sustainable living to communities nationwide.

As fall TV starts to feel a little more fall-like, Paramount+ is heading into November as the host of several new series this month, including its own “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” starring David Oyelowo; the genre-bending Showtime series “The Curse”; and the United States debut of the hit Australian comedy “Colin From Accounts,” among plenty of other new titles and library additions.
On the movie side, ’90s kids will get a heap of nostalgia with the premiere of the highly anticipated sequel to “Good Burger,” which will be served up exclusively on the platform on Nov. 22. Paramount+ will add dozens of titles to its film library starting on Nov. 1, including “Ferris Bueller's Day Off,” “Gladiator,” and a large collection of Audrey Hepburn classics like “My Fair Lady,” “Roman Holiday,” and more.

The SAG-AFTRA strike, a wild card throughout the fall festival season, has created a closing stretch of the New York Film Festival unlike many (any?) of its 60 previous editions.
The final NYFF press conference this morning featured Ferrari cast members Adam Driver, Penélope Cruz and Gabriel Leone alongside writer-director Michael Mann discussing the Closing Night selection.
The presence of talent onstage at Walter Reade Theater, thanks to an interim agreement for publicity obtained by distributor Neon before the film’s August 31 world premiere in Venice, offered a welcome dose of the familiar. Not only was the stage picture a recognizable one, but the themes of the conversation all covered well-established terrain. Topics included the film’s production in Italy, Mann’s decades-long quest to get it made and the cast’s exhaustive research.
Cruz said her character, Laura Ferrari, “was even more involved [in the auto company] than we see here.

It’s not often prestigious organizations invite damnation, misfortune, or any kind of bad luck onto themselves — let alone their renowned festival and its thousands of guests — but for Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, exceptions will be made.
“The Curse” held its world premiere at the New York Film Festival Thursday night, with both co-creators in attendance for the first TV series to ever premiere at NYFF. Fielder, Safdie, and Emma Stone (who did not attend) executive produce and co-star in Showtime’s upcoming black comedy — about a trio of creatives behind an aspiring HGTV home-renovation series — which had audiences laughing and gasping throughout the three-hour screening.
Dennis Lim, the festival’s artistic director, did warn the crowd (as best he could) during his opening remarks.
“[‘The Curse’] is as brilliant, wild, perverse, hilarious, uncomfortable, and anxiety-inducing as you’d expect,” he said, alluding to Fielder and Safdie’s previous works.

Nathan Fielder is an off-beat comedian who graduated from one of Canada’s top business schools with really good grades. His former shows, Nathan For You and the recent The Rehearsal from HBO, are masterful at being uncomfortable and cringe-inducing by design as part of the humor. His combined powers with Uncut Gems director Benny Safdie bring us an abstract trailer for The Curse. The Curse is a rare scripted narrative series for Fielder, and it teams him up with the show’s star, Emma Stone. Stone is currently gaining praise in the festival circuit for her new bold Frankenstein-esque film, Poor Things.
The official synopsis from Showtime reads,
“Newly married couple Whitney and Asher are convinced they’re helping to build communities – and save lives – by developing eco-friendly homes for ‘Fliplanthropy,’ their socially conscious new reality show. But behind every on-camera renovation lies a path of off-camera destruction when a hostile makeover,...

Yep, that’s cursed, alright. That idea, a hex, a curse, the concept, the phrase, is explored in delightfully weird ways in “The Curse,” easily one of our most anticipated series of the year that’s almost upon us. From Oscar-winner Emma Stone, comedian Nathan Fielder (“The Rehearsal”), and indie filmmaker/actor Benny Safdie—all of whom star and executive produce—“The Curse” looks exceptionally wild, strange, and funny.

Chip and Joanna Gaines have nothing on these houseflippers. On Thursday, Showtime released the official trailer for The Curse, a dark comedy series that follows an HGTV-esque couple played by Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder. The 10-episode series is set to hit Showtime on Nov. 10.
“This isn’t your typical home-flipping show,” Stone declares as she shows off some of the homes during an interview. “And we’re husband and wife. So, what could go wrong?”
The visual sees Fielder being directed to give a little girl $100 while being filmed on the street.

Just when we were finally fully recovered from the reality-bending games of "The Rehearsal," another Nathan Fielder project is here to mess with our minds. This time it's "The Curse," a new Showtime and Paramount+ series co-created and directed by Fielder and "Uncut Gems" filmmaker Benny Safdie. Emma Stone co-stars, and based on the trailer that just dropped, "The Curse" is poised to be a wild ride.
The series is tough to get a handle on based on its trippy first trailer, in part because it employs the documentary-like cinematic style of past meta projects from Fielder, yet seems poised to tell a fictional story. Still, even when Fielder goes the fiction route, there seem to be dizzying layers to the unreality, as evidenced by an early shot in which Stone's character, one half of a home-flipping reality TV duo, breaks character herself during a Vo recording session. Fielder plays her other half,...

If you like you find humor and horror in the uncomfortable, then I have incredible news for you. Nathan Fielder, the ingenious comedian behind the small business improvement satire "Nathan for You" and the HBO meta-series "The Rehearsal," is teaming up with one of the directors of "Uncut Gems" to deliver the highly-anticipated Showtime series, "The Curse."
Emma Stone and Fielder star in the forthcoming show as Whitney and Asher, a couple that recently landed a home improvement show. Their HGTV-style series "Flipanthropy" is produced by Dougie, a stringy-haired mysterious figure played by Benny Safdie who is "holding onto secrets of his own," per Variety. The couple is simultaneously struggling to conceive — a struggle seemingly augmented by a looming curse.
So when exactly can you expect to see "The Curse" on your screens at home? And is there an opportunity to see it in person? Luckily, /Film found out...

Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder have their sledgehammers ready, but they might not only be breaking down walls in their new Showtime and A24 comedy “The Curse.” The studios have released the first trailer for their genre-defying new series, set to premiere on Nov. 10 on Paramount+ and air Nov. 12 on Showtime.
Stone and Fielder play a married couple, Whitney and Asher, who flip houses on a new show called “Flipanthropy,” seemingly similar to real-life HGTV home renovation shows like “Fixer Upper.” Whitney and Asher’s “Flipanthropy” series is produced by a character named Dougie, played by co-creator Benny Safdie, who harbors some secrets.
Despite the couple’s big break and their hopes to have a child, all is not well for the house-flipping duo. Whitney and Asher, based in Española, N.M., are soon faced with a mysterious curse that will “disturb the relationship.”

Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder are ready to go house-hunting to flip homes in the upcoming A24 series set for Showtime, “The Curse.”
The Oscar-winning “Poor Things” actress and “The Rehearsal” creator play a married couple trying to conceive a child while gentrifying a neighborhood through house-flipping deals. The series, which spoofs an HGTV house-flipping show, is co-created (and co-stars) Benny Safdie, who plays the fictional reality show’s producer.
“The Curse” follows Asher (Fielder) and Whitney (Stone) Siegel who are married entrepreneurs (don’t call them gentrifiers). Their latest plan is to flip houses and convert them into eco-friendly homes for the struggling residents of Española, New Mexico — all for an HGTV-style reality show being overseen by an ingratiating producer (Safdie) with demons of his own. From this premise, which nimbly touches upon inescapable American issues of race, class, and capital, Fielder and Safdie branch out into an increasingly...

Ever wonder what might happen if an HGTV couple flipped a haunted house? HBO’s “Succession” was a critical darling, so it’s probably befitting that the show would end its run with two final lauds from the Television Critics Assn. The 39th Annual TCA Awards — which canceled its in-person event this year due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes — released its list of winners on Monday, with “Succession” grabbing the prizes for program of the year, as well as outstanding achievement in drama (an award it also won in 2022 and 2020).
Other major winners included FX’s “The Bear,” which airs on Hulu. The series’ first season was honored as outstanding new program, as well as outstanding achievement in comedy. The TCA spread the wealth when it comes to individual achievements, honoring “Better Call Saul” star Rhea Seehorn in drama, and “Poker Face” star Natasha Lyonne in comedy.

Even though John Wilson, the titular creator and host of HBO’s “How to With John Wilson,” had several ideas that could have been part of the documentary series’ future, he knew he had to end on Season 3.
“Rather than just having it go on indefinitely, I wanted it to feel like there was a bit of an arc,” Wilson told TheWrap. “I also feel like the best thing that you can do is to just leave people wanting more.”
Thus marks the beginning of the end for one of the most charmingly bizarre series HBO has ever created. In every season of “How to With John Wilson,” the soft-spoken documentarian offers his expertise — and through a series of investigative interviews, the expertise of others — on a variety of topics. How do you make small talk? How do you be spontaneous? How do you throw out your batteries?

Months after “Jury Duty” unexpectedly stole America’s heart, the Amazon Freevee continued bucking its underdog status by landing four primetime Emmy nominations, a success EP Dave Bernad attributes to the show’s uplifting moments of humanity.
“As we went into Covid, we were in a dark time and the idea was trying to make something hopeful, and specifically part funny that had heart and, most importantly, that highlighted the hero’s journey and the wonderful humanity [that’s] out there,” Bernad told TheWrap. “I think maybe that’s what people responded to in the show, especially in this moment.”
The series nabbed two big scores for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for James Marsden, as well as nominations for Outstanding Casting For A Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series, cementing Amazon Freevee as first free AVOD service to receive a major series Primetime Emmy nomination.
