As everyone knows, Tom Cruise leads an action-packed life akin to that of a movie star. The actor enjoys a good thrill, and he performs almost all of his own stunts. And it was his dedication that led him to accept one of his most prominent roles, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, in the 1986 action flick Top Gun.
So, in the case of this Paramount Pictures film, the actor had an unusual demand that ultimately saved the film from disaster. Well, after a less-than-ideal experience working with director Ridley Scott on the movie Legend, Cruise was understandably cautious about committing to a new project.
When producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer approached him with the script for Top Gun, Cruise liked it but felt that it “needed some work”.

For the past three years, the American Cinematheque has presented “Bleak Week,” an annual festival devoted to the greatest films ever made about the darkest side of humanity. This year, the festival will not only be unspooling in Los Angeles June 1 – 7 — with special guests including Al Pacino, Lynne Ramsay, Charlie Kaufman, and Karyn Kusama — but will travel to New York for the first time with a week of screenings at the historic Paris Theater starting June 9.
“We are honored to co-present ‘Bleak Week: New York’ in partnership with one of the most beautiful movie palaces in the world,” Cinematheque artistic director Grant Moninger told IndieWire. “This year, over 10,000 people will attend ‘Bleak Week: Year 3’ in Los Angeles, proving that audiences are hungry for such powerful and confrontational cinema. Many people thought they were alone in their desire to explore films with uncomfortable truths, but the truth is that they are part of a large community,...

Director Stanley Kubrick is known for his perfectionist tendencies while on set. His commitment to getting the shot technically and artistically right has resulted in some of the best films of all time such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Barry Lyndon, Paths of Glory, Full Metal Jacket, and The Shining among others.
Kubrick passed away before the release of his final film Eyes Wide Shut, which starred Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who were then married. While the psychological thriller drama has been regarded as one of Kubrick’s best and is considered to be one of the greats, the filmmaker himself reportedly did not like the film and especially hated working with Cruise and Kidman.

Stanley Kubrick was a peculiar man and so it’s really no wonder that his list of favorite films is so diverse. There are works by Welles and Chaplin and Bergman, but he also dug White Men Can’t Jump and The Jerk. Kubrick, too, apparently took to True Lies – so much so that he sat director James Cameron down and asked just how he pulled it off.
Back in the ‘90s, James Cameron decided to give himself a special 40th birthday present: the chance to meet Stanley Kubrick. And so after he gave him a call, he finally did so, encountering the legendary director between Full Metal Jacket and what would be his final film a few years later, Eyes Wide Shut. But Cameron was in for a surprise, as Kubrick was less interested in expounding on the depths of 2001: A Space Odyssey or playing chess but rather...

Chicago – The journey of a thousand miles begins … in the case of “Hard Miles” starring Matthew Modine … with a single pedal. “Hard Miles” joins the pantheon of cycling movies, in this case with Modine portraying a social worker who teaches his life lessons through a bicycling journey with his youthful charges.
The based-on-truth story features Greg (Modine) as a beleaguered social worker at a Colorado juvenile correctional cente, with a passion for bicycle challenges and a revelatory idea for rehabilitation … rounding up an unlikely crew of incarcerated students to complete a transformative 762 mile ride from Denver to the Grand Canyon. To achieve their goal, this determined mentor and his disgruntled teenage squad will battle heat stroke, speed wobbles, mountainous inclines, and most of all each other to come together as a unified team.

Beyoncé recently sampled Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made for Walkin'” in her new track “Ya Ya.” Sinatra revealed she once begged an icon from a different medium to use that song. He made Sinatra’s dream come true, but in the process, he created a scene with a troubling undercurrent.

Sinatra’s cover of Cher’s “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” was used quite literally in a sequence in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. During a 2004 interview with Hot Press, Sinatra discussed this scene. “I’m a huge Tarantino fan, so him choosing me over Sonny & Cher was very humbling,” she opined. “I had a similar experience when a year before Full Metal Jacket came out I got word that Stanley Kubrick wanted ‘Boots’ for the soundtrack. There had been drill sergeants in movies before Louis Gossett Jr. played one in “An Officer and a Gentleman” in 1982. There would be a lot of them afterwards. But it’s a role that Gossett made his own, and the movie role that, more than any other, came to define him. Gossett, who died on March 29 at the age of 87, was a great actor who imposed his presence; just watch the ferocious way he plays an alien soldier, under a mask of beaded make-up, in “Enemy Mine.” But in “An Officer and a Gentleman,” Gossett took the showpiece role of a tough-nut drill sergeant and invested it with such flourish that he made it mythological. He took possession of the role, infusing the very idea of the drill sergeant with a richness, a soul and wit, and a touch of something that no other actor ever brought to it — a quality of mystery.

Earlier today, we were sad to hear that veteran character actor Louis Gossett Jr had passed away at 87. While we have to get used to the fact that our favorite actors are all human, and like all of us, eventually pass away, it can’t help but hurt anytime we lose a legend like this. But he leaves behind a rich legacy, so let’s look back at five of his coolest roles.
An Officer and a Gentleman:
Louis Gossett Jr. won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in this, and next to R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket, he’s likely the guy everyone pictures when they think of a drill sergeant. While folks usually think of this as a romance due to stars Richard Gere and Debra Winger and the famous Joe Cocker song, “Up Where We Belong,” the R-rated movie is a lot harder than you remember.

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown and fiancé Jake Bongiovi, son of musician Jon Bon Jovi, are tying the knot with Brown’s costar, Matthew Modine, officiating.
Modine, known for his roles in Full Metal Jacket and Vision Quest, plays Brown’s father figure in the Netflix hit series Stranger Things. While Modine’s character, known as “Papa” by Eleven or Dr. Martin Brenner, isn’t the kindest in the show, there was nothing but love from Modine when he announced he will officiate the young couple’s marriage.
Modine told Access Daily, “I have one of those licenses to get people married and Millie thought it’d be great, and then Jake said it would be a great idea, so I wrote the wedding vows and they loved what I wrote for them to join hands and to become husband and wife.”

Curb Your Enthusiasm returns to Max this month in what’s being called the show’s final season (for now). If you’re not ready for the Larry David-centric comedy series to end, you can binge all eleven of the show’s previous seasons on Max right now before hitting the new episodes.
Tokyo Vice will also be back in February for season 2. Stars Ansel Elgort, Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Show Kasamatsu, and Ayumi Ito are joined by Kubozuka and Miki Maya this time around, as Jake Adelstein feels the danger closing in on him. Max also welcomes you to the premiere of the highly acclaimed (and highly depraved) Dicks: The Musical this month, as a couple of self-obsessed businessmen discover they’re identical twins and decided to bring their divorced parents back together.

In 2017, Kevin Nealon and his friend Matthew Modine were huffing and puffing their way up a steep grade in Temescal Canyon, a tranquil trail that’s a kind of unofficial backyard for many industry figures on L.A.’s Westside. Their breathless conversation amused Nealon, so he whipped out his iPhone and started recording. Among the oaks and sycamores, with birdsong in the background, Nealon asked Modine, who first rose to prominence in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket in 1987, which acting roles he had turned down in his career. “He goes, ‘Oh, man. Back to the Future, the Michael J. Fox part. Big, the Tom Hanks part. Wall Street, the Charlie Sheen part.’ I said, ‘You idiot.’ He laughed.” Nealon posted some clips from their conversation on his Twitter feed, and the videos started taking off.

Julian Senior, the veteran Warner Bros. marketing and publicity executive in Europe who enjoyed close relationships with filmmakers including Oscar winners Stanley Kubrick, Clint Eastwood, David Puttnam and Neil Jordan, has died. He was 85.
Senior died Jan. 1 of pneumonia and heart failure in a hospital near his home in Borehamwood, England, Conor Nolan, his friend and onetime Warner Bros. colleague, told The Hollywood Reporter.
A native of South Africa, Senior joined Warner Bros. in 1970 after an eight-year run at MGM, where he was an advertising and publicity consultant in its European Regional Office, and he stuck with the studio through 2000.
At the start, Senior helped mastermind the advertising and publicity campaign for the landmark Kubrick film A Clockwork Orange (1971), and he also worked with the famed director on The Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999).
“He taught me how publicity, advertising and marketing operates,” Senior once said of Kubrick.

“Head South” director Jonathan Ogilvie is all about underdogs.
“It’s not a story about winners. It’s a story about also-rans, to use this racing term, because there is nothing to win,” he tells Variety about the International Film Festival Rotterdam opener, which sees schoolboy Angus (Ed Oxenbould) falling for a girl and for post-punk music in 1979’s New Zealand.
“There wasn’t a real music industry, so you couldn’t become a rock star. Back in those days, we often talked about ‘the tyranny of distance.’ We felt so removed from everything. But it was the triumph of distance, because it allowed people to interpret things in a new way. It’s a film about music, yes, but also about art and creative expression.”
Praising Oxenbould, he adds: “On the page, Angus could seem like a nasty little brat. But Ed was also in a band; his brother was also living in London.

The past year posed challenges for the much-anticipated ‘Daredevil: Born Again.’ Despite high expectations, the show’s development faced hurdles, including the impact of the historic SAG-AFTRA strike and creative differences between the studio’s vision and the writers’ delivery. This led to a major overhaul of the first season in late September 2023, with head writers Corman and Ord, as well as the initial directors, being replaced.
Dissatisfaction with the direction, particularly a departure from the Netflix version and delays in featuring Daredevil in costume prompted the studio’s decision. The new direction aimed to incorporate existing footage, introduce new serialized elements, and align more closely with the tone of the Netflix series. Corman and Ord retained executive producer credits, while Dario Scardapane, known for his involvement in Netflix’s ‘The Punisher,’ became the new showrunner in October 2023. Vincent D’Onofrio Shares Updates Regarding ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Filming: “We’re Gonna Start Soon”
The past year has been difficult for the upcoming ‘Daredevil: Born again’. Despite ‘Born Again’ being highly awaited, the development of the show was not without problems. Like most projects, it was also affected by the historic SAG-AFTRA strike, and, at some point, the creative differences between what the studio wanted and what the writers delivered grew to be too big, and ‘Daredevil’ was once again in development.
In late September 2023, Marvel Studios decided to overhaul the first season of the series after filming fewer than half of its episodes. Heaping praise on Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Vincent D’Onofrio said: “Through the movies I have seen, I have always been interested in Bollywood and I have gotten along very well with Vinod...

The heat is back on in this episode of Revisited, as we follow up our last outing with Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop with the inevitable sequel. Part one proved to be such a mammoth hit that not only helped send Eddie Murphy’s career into the stratosphere but it guaranteed that part two wouldn’t be too far away.
If you take a look back at the 1980s, which is something we love to do here at JoBlo, there are many franchises that started in the era and still have longevity or an influence in modern Hollywood. However, when you have a movie as popular as Beverly Hills Cop, that doesn’t necessarily mean that a sequel will match the quality of the first, and it’s been a problem that Hollywood has faced over the years. Just how, exactly, do you keep your inbuilt audience happy while...

If we’re talking about the holy trinity of Vietnam War movies, there’s no doubt about which ones reign supreme. Indeed, Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, Oliver Stone’s Platoon, and Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket will forever be regarded as the most viscerally harrowing glimpses into the physical and psychological toll that the Vietnam War had on a generation of young American men. Yet, despite the popularity of Full Metal Jacket, one can’t help but wonder how much more successful the movie would have been if weren’t released in the shadow of Platoon’s smashing success. Remember, not only did Platoon win four Oscars in 1987, including Best Picture, but it was released in theaters just five months before Full Metal Jacket. As a result, Kubrick’s undeniable classic sort of got lost in the shuffle and never received the contemporaneous accolades and attention it deserved.

Actor Denzel Washington, considered a leading man, normally doesn’t have to audition for film projects. And it’s a privilege the actor appreciates, seeing as he really doesn’t like fighting other stars for movies.

Washington, like most A-list stars, has built up enough good will that he no longer has to audition for film roles. According to the actor’s own memory, he hasn’t auditioned since the 80s.
“The last time I auditioned for a role was the 1980s,” Washington once said according to The Grio. “I did a little screen test for Cry Freedom in 1986, that’s the last time I remember.”

Chicago – The stature and talent of actor Matthew Modine has loomed large for nearly two generations. He began his career in his early twenties, and continues to make an impact as he takes on new roles … for instance, that of a social worker in “Hard Miles,” which screened at the 59th Chicago International Film Festival (Ciff).

Greg (Modine) is a beleaguered social worker at a Colorado juvenile correctional center with a passion for bicycle racing and a revelatory idea for rehabilitation …rounding up an unlikely crew of incarcerated students to complete a transformative 1000-mile ride from Denver to the Grand Canyon. To achieve their goal, this determined coach and his disgruntled teenage squad will battle heat stroke, speed wobbles, mountainous inclines, and most of all each other to come together as a unified team.

I don't know about you, but to me, nothing is more disturbing than someone claiming to care for you while doing nefarious things that mess with your life. It's why Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine), the man behind the mind experiments from the Netflix series "Stranger Things" is so horrifying. Dr. Brenner, aka the Papa that Eleven is supposed to love while he messes with her brain is scarier than Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and all the Demogorgons combined. In-your-face evil is one thing, but when you're brainwashed into thinking someone cares about you, and then realize that they're working for their own selfish and cruel ends, it's gut-wrenching. It's rough to watch, and, according to a 2022 interview Modine did with Men's Health, it's hard to play as well.

"Jaws" might have been the first blockbuster in 1975, but nearly 15 years later, 1989's "Batman" changed the definition of the term. Tim Burton's third studio movie not only proved a financial success, bringing in $411 million worldwide on a $35 million budget, it kicked off a summer of so-called "Bat-mania," becoming a bonafide phenomenon as Warner Bros. bombarded every facet of popular culture with Bat-themed merchandise. The "Batman" breakfast cereal commercial remains a personal favorite for the grandiose introduction of the product as "Batman, the cereal."
"Batman" becoming such a mega-hit was somewhat surprising, if only because the production itself had faced its share of challenges. Listing everything that was working against the film would take an entire article in and of itself, suffice it to say that Burton described bringing his vision to life as "torture." But despite the various struggles the director had to overcome, the film did have a lot working in its favor.

Welp! That old gray mare, she ain’t what she used to be. Kevin Hart recently learned a harsh lesson in the art of aging after challenging former NFL player Stevan Ridley to a 40-yard dash. During his attempt to do “young stuff,” Hart tore his lower abdomen and abductors. Calling himself the Dumbest Man Alive, Hart is recovering in a wheelchair after the incident. To control the narrative and perhaps warn his fans to respect their aging bodies, Hart posted a message to social media detailing his injury.
In the video, Hart says he argued with Ridley about who is faster. The duo agreed to engage in a 40-yard dash, and that’s where it all went south.
“We get out there, we go run the 40-yard dash,” Hart said. “40-yard dash. Guys, I blew all my s–t. Tore my lower abdomen, my abductors. I don’t even know what that is,...

As Donald Trump’s mug shot from his arrest in Fulton County, Georgia, took off online Thursday night, spawning memes of every shape, stripe and color, one compilation stood out among the rest.
And while the rousing meme sent Trump up in appropriate fashion — and certainly wasn’t alone in that regard — it served a dual function, proving that while the legendary director Stanley Kubrick is no longer with us (he died in 1999), his legacy has stood the test of time.
In the meme, Trump as jail bird joins a photo montage of villains from three of Kubrick’s Warner Bros. classics — Malcolm McDowell as Alex in 1971’s “A Clockwork Orange,” Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance in 1980’s “The Shining” and Vincent D’Onofrio as Private Pyle in 1987’s “Full Metal Jacket.”

Known for his towering height and slim physique, Matthew Modine rose to fame on the wings of Stanley Kubrick‘s Full Metal Jacket (1987). He began acting professionally in the early 1980s and it wasn’t long before he scored his first main role in a feature film. In addition to Full Metal Jacket, Modine also gained early recognition in his career for his performance in movies such as Birdy (1984), Vision Quest (1985), Pacific Heights (1990), Short Cuts (1993), and Cutthroat Island (1995). On the other hand, Stranger Things, The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Bedford Diaries, Weeds, and Proof...

Until the 1980’s, Hollywood had a strange relationship with the Vietnam War. While the war was actually being fought, movies, typically, did not depict the war unless they were something like John Wayne’s The Green Berets. If the war was dealt with, usually it was done metaphorically, or by using another war as a stand-in, such as what happened with 1970’s Mash. This started to change after the war finally ended, with the late seventies seeing the release of three major films – The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now and Coming Home, Despite their popularity, during the first half of the eighties, when the war was dealt with on-screen it was typically as wish fulfillment, where action stars such as Chuck Norris and Sylvester Stallone single-handedly refought the war, and won, to the delight of audiences.
That all changed when Oliver Stone made Platoon. For the first time, a Vietnam War...

Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy is nearly perfect, and it’s impossible to imagine anyone doing it better. However, The Beatles were fans of J. R. R. Tolkien’s work and wanted to star in a film adaptation. The plans ultimately fell through when director Stanley Kubrick turned it down, and Tolkien refused to allow The Beatles to make it.

Though he's known for his symmetrical compositions and that infamous stare, Stanley Kubrick was always chiefly concerned with story. If it wasn't for good stories there would be no great Kubrick films — as evidenced by the fact the celebrated auteur never made a movie that he hadn't adapted from someone else's work (barring an early noir effort he co-wrote). From "Lolita" to "Eyes Wide Shut," Kubrick would scour the cultural landscape for stories worth adapting, usually finding them in novels. And in the case of 1971's "A Clockwork Orange," the director would adhere to Anthony Burgess's 1962 work of fiction arguably more closely than with any of his later films.
Kubrick respected Burgess' novel greatly, calling it "brilliant and original." That's not to say he didn't feel similarly about other source material he worked with, but the director also had a knack for disappointing the originators of that material. Gus Hasford,...

Warner Bros. will be top of the world on TCM in April when the network devotes the entire month to films and more from the studio that is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, it was announced Wednesday.
TCM will shower viewers with scores of Warners movies, from every decade of its sister studio’s history, plus interstitials, documentaries, trailers, archival interviews, shorts and Looney Tunes cartoons.
“Warner Bros.’ history is TCM history. Where would this network be without films like Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon or A Star Is Born? We are thrilled to be honoring the studio that has given us so many iconic films since 1923,” Pola Changnon, general manager of TCM, said in a statement.

Blumhouse is a household name among horror fans. The studio, founded by the eponymous Jason Blum, is a frequent producing partner of James Wan and helped launch the directing career of Jordan Peele by producing "Get Out." The studio has a track record of both reviving dormant horror staples, whether it be "Halloween" or "The Invisible Man," and creating new ones, such as this year's "M3GAN."
The Blumhouse catalog is not entirely horror, though. In 2014, the studio produced "Whiplash" alongside "Paranormal Activity" and "The Purge" sequels. Some might argue that the former film, about an aspiring drummer Andrew Neiman (Miles Teller) enduring "Full Metal Jacket" style abuse from his instructor Terence Fletcher (Jk Simmons) is a flavor of psychological horror. Still, compared to Blumhouse's usual output, it's a grounded drama.

Julia Garner, Florence Pugh and Odessa Young were put through the musical equivalent of the first half hour of Full Metal Jacket for a now cancelled auto-biopic of the singer
It’s a sad day to be Julia Garner. For years, Garner has been slowly carving out a niche for herself as one of Hollywood’s most promising leading actors. She was the best thing about Ozark, the best thing about The Assistant, the best thing about Dirty John, and she was also in Inventing Anna. And this unstoppable rise was meant to be capped with a showy turn as one of the biggest icons the world has ever seen: Madonna.
Of course, that’s all in the bin now. The long-gestating Madonna biopic – about Madonna, co-written by Madonna and directed by Madonna – has been canned. News of the film’s cancellation came after Madonna announced a huge world tour,...

An admission: I’m not a giant fan of war movies. I loved “Platoon,” “Full Metal Jacket,” “Apocalypse Now,” “The Thin Red Line,” “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan,” to name a half-dozen. But too often, I’ve found the violence gratuitous, the point about the pointlessness of war driven home too hard and transparently. But my fellow editors at Gold Derby have been insisting for weeks that the German remake of “All Quiet on the Western Front” on Netflix was a harrowing masterpiece that needed to be taken more seriously in the Oscar race – and not just for Best International Feature but picture, director (Edward Berger), adapted screenplay, cinematography and a slew of crafts categories, too. I finally caved and watched it over the weekend, and I’m happy to report they were right.

Who doesn't love a good war movie — the romance, the spectacle, the exhilaration, the drama, the heartbreak? Well, as it turns out, most critics seem to hate a majority of war films and save their positive reviews for a select few, such as "Apocalypse Now," "Full Metal Jacket," and "Saving Private Ryan." Granted, the genre has produced some real stinkers over the years, but plenty of war epics also endured unwarranted critical disdain; many of these pictures provided rock-solid entertainment but were labeled cliché, sentimental, or too noble for their own good.
Imagine calling a film set in World War II too earnest or berating a romantic epic for its love story.
Look, I'm just as enamored with and respectful of a critic's opinion as the next person, but we can all agree they get it wrong sometimes. As proof, I've compiled a list of war epics I believe were...

It's not really surprising that Stanley Kubrick never really got along with the whole American studio system of filmmaking. A notorious perfectionist, the director was at his best when retaining all creative control, and he knew it. Hence why he spent a large part of his career holed up in his Hertfordshire manor house. Childwickbury Manor has since become famous among fans of the auteur for being where he planned, wrote, and even edited some of his most famous movies, including the war epic "Full Metal Jacket."
But Kubrick actually made the move to the U.K. long before he took up residence in Childickbury in 1978. Back in 1960, he and his wife Christiane crossed the Atlantic to live just north of London while Kubrick worked on an adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov's now-classic novel "Lolita." The project was to be the director's triumphant escape from the rigidities of the Hollywood system,...

An ill-advised tour of the snow-bound Overlook Hotel, as seen in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror classic "The Shining," can find menace in several of its nooks and crannies. The grim history of the hotel would leave supernatural traces behind –- Scatman Crothers' chef and telepath Dick Hallorann would liken the old hotel's malevolent presence to the scent of burnt toast –- in bloody elevators and time-warped ballrooms. However, one of the most intimidating places on the hotel grounds is a time-honored obstacle for fictional heroes: a towering labyrinthian maze, complete with its own axe-swinging monster.
Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) emerges as the Overlook's greatest weapon, prompting him to attack his family and chase his terrified child Danny (Danny Lloyd) into a nearby snow-flecked hedge maze in the film's climax (read more about the ending from /Film's Max Evry). An early scene in the film gives dimension to the maze without spoilers:

By the time Stanley Kubrick came to direct "Full Metal Jacket" in the mid-1980s, his legendary status had been well and truly established. At that point, most of his filmography was behind him. "Full Metal Jacket," released in 1987, would be his penultimate film, followed by "Eyes Wide Shut" in 1999 — the same year the director passed away. But Kubrick had long since ascended to a status in Hollywood that few other directors ever had or would reach. Naturally, actors were eager to be a part of his Vietnam War epic.
Kubrick, ever the informed and calculating artist, was well-aware of his reputation and took a characteristically unique approach to casting "Full Metal Jacket" by playing on that reputation. The director had always put the story first on whatever project he was working on, and as such was diligent about getting the right actors for his roles. As "Full Metal Jacket...

Stanley Kubrick's 1999 film "Eyes Wide Shut" was based on a 1926 novella by Arthur Schnitzler called "Traumnovelle" or "Dream Story." True to the title, Kubrick's film plays out like a dream. Dr. Bill Harford (Tom Cruise), upon learning that his wife Alice (Nicole Kidman) had an aggressively detailed sexual fantasy about a soldier she saw in a hotel, drifts out into the world in a sexual haze. He experiences an episodic phantasmagoria seemingly constructed of half-memories and surreal, self-contained scenarios, each of which is marked by a sexual element. Bill is tempted to have sex with other women, but doesn't ever complete an affair. In dream-like fashion, sexual encounters are persistently denied.
"Eyes Wide Shut" is about, among many other things, an adult coming to realize that he lives in a sexual world. Bill has sexual desires -- he and Alice are intimate early in the movie -- but his sexuality seems weirdly tamped down,...

This post contains mild spoilers for "Babylon."
Damien Chazelle's "Babylon," an exciting, raunchy, expressionistic tale of debauchery in late '20s Hollywood, is currently — and quite unfortunately — bombing at the box office. This is a pity, as large-scale, R-rated Hollywood art epics are rare animals in the film marketplace of 2022, and audiences might find something striking and fun and even a little bit naughty at their local multiplex. "Babylon" tells the tale of three hopefuls, each trying to break into, or break back into, the film industry during its wild, lawless days. There is the film's Dickensian narrator Manuel (Diego Calva) who aims to work in a technical capacity. There is the ambitious would-be actress Nellie (Margot Robbie), a wild ball of madness who fights a snake. And, on the way down, is Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt) a man whose career will definitely not recover from its current doldrums.
