The series starred Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges as Arnold and Willis Jackson, two impoverished kids from Harlem whose mother had recently died. They were adopted by the wealthy Mr. Drummond (Conrad Bain), a Park Avenue millionaire. The series revolved around the relationship Arnold and Willis developed with their adopted father, new sister Kimberly (Dana Plato), and one of three kindly housekeepers. In the 1984 season, Mr. Drummond married a woman named Maggie, and she was played by Dixie Carter for two years before being replaced by Mary Ann Mobley.

It’s been four decades since Samantha Baker bemoaned the fact that everyone had forgotten her 16th birthday amid the chaos caused by her wacky sister’s impending nuptials. On May 4, 1984, “Sixteen Candles” was released, the success of which prompted a string of hits by filmmaker John Hughes, launched the careers of several performers and inspired the glory years of teen movies in the 1980s. Read on for more about the “Sixteen Candles” 40th anniversary.
After the success of two movies based on screenplays he had written, “Mr. Mom” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983), Hughes was given the opportunity to direct one of his scripts. Up to this point, “teen movies” had largely evolved from cautionary “rebellion” films in the 1950s to the beach party films of the 1960s to slasher films of the 1970s to sex comedies in the early 1980s. Double Oscar winner George Clooney has become one of the most successful people in his profession but despite family connections (his aunt was the late singer Rosemary Clooney), he struggled for years to make it as an actor.
After dropping out of college, Clooney would try his hand at acting. He struggled for a few years until finding a part on “E/R” in 1984. This wasn’t the “ER” that would make him a star 10 years later, but instead was a short-lived sitcom with the same name. In the decade between those shows, Clooney became known mostly for his track record of starring in an incredibly large number of pilots that weren’t picked up to be made into series. He would score a few successes with recurring roles on “The Facts of Life,” “Sisters” and “Roseanne,” but he would also suffer brutal humiliations like starring in “Return to Horror High...

There are so many fabulous women wearing so many fabulous ‘60s outfits in Apple TV+’s Palm Royale, it’s like a Ryan Murphy fever dream. A cast that includes Kristen Wiig, Allison Janney, Laura Dern and Carol Burnett is undeniably tantalizing, but Palm Royale — debuting this Wednesday on the streamer; I’ve seen the first three episodes — never lives up to its stellar cast. Campy and overbaked, it manages to fall between the cracks of the dramedy genre: not funny enough to be a comedy and not compelling enough to be a drama. But the clothes do look great,...

Los Angeles, Jan 16 (Ians) Actor-comedian Anthony Anderson took the stage at the top of the Emmys with a musical number paying tribute to hit TV theme songs alongside his mother, Doris Bowman, Blink-182’s Travis Barker and actor Christina Applegate.
The opening segment took place in Anderson’s “living room” set, with the “Black-ish” star entering following a title card for “Mister Anderson’s Neighborhood,” reports variety.com.
Upon his entrance, Anderson got a round of cheers — and another set when he mentioned the Emmys were taking place on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
“We’re going to commemorate the greatest shows of today by paying tribute to some of the iconic series that means so much to us,” Anderson said.
Among the songs included in Anderson’s monologue montage were: “Good Times,” “The Facts of Life,” and “Miami Vice” (that one Barker joined in on). Anderson played the tunes...

The 2023 Emmy Awards have finally arrived after months of delay, and TV’s biggest night will finally celebrate the seasons that aired from June 2022 to May 2023 — with FX/Hulu’s The Bear taking an early lead with five wins.
Fresh off his recent wins at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, Jeremy Allen White won his first Emmy for best actor in a comedy series. “I’m so full of gratitude to be standing in front of you all,” said White. “I love the show so much. It filled me up. It gave me a passion and set a fire in me to match the beautiful work done by [showrunners] Christopher Storer and Joanna Calo.”

After months of delays brought about by the writers’ and actors’ strikes, the 2023 Emmys finally took place … in 2024. Well, who better to poke fun at the agonizing holdup than Anthony Anderson? After four months of delays, the Emmys are here — the historic 75th Emmys, as host Anthony Anderson quickly noted at the top of the show. The evening’s telecast was intended not only as a celebration of the best TV debuting between 2022 and 2023, but of three-quarters of a century of iconic television.
Anderson’s opening was short, sweet, and safe (the ghost of Jo Koy’s attempt to win over the Golden Globes still fresh for many in the room), strolling out onto a sitcom set to start. He expressed his love and gratitude for television and the shows he grew up with, then launched into a series of quick musical interludes with “a small local diverse and inclusive choir from Compton” (featuring a token white guy as a tribute to Kevin Costner’s Compton origins. “Yellowstone!” Anderson cried out).

One of the highlights in the final chapter of Norman Lear’s legendary career were the Live In Front Of a Studio Audience specials recreating episodes from his classic sitcoms. He executive produced them with Jimmy Kimmel, winning an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) together while also developing a close friendship.
On Wednesday night, hours after news broke that Lear had died Tuesday night at the age of 101, Kimmel opened his ABC late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live with a moving tribute to his idol and friend.
“Norman was the genius who brought us some of the greatest television shows and characters of all time,” a visibly emotional Kimmel said, listing some of Lear’s most famous series, including All in the Family, Good Times, The Jeffersons, Maude, The Facts of Life; Diff’Rent Strokes; Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time; Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, and Fernwood Tonight.

Hollywood may have lost a TV legend in Norman Lear, following his death on Tuesday at the age of 101, but fans will be able to spend a little more time with him as he is set to make a cameo appearance in the upcoming animated series Good Times, Deadline has learned exclusively.
The Netflix and Sony Picture Television comedy, which follows a new generation of the Evans family residing in one of the last remaining housing projects in Chicago, has yet to announce a release date but sources reveal they’re targeting a Summer 2024 premiere. Netflix and Spt declined comment.
Good Times is only one of several projects left behind by Lear who, at age 101, remained busy developing and producing new series through his production deal at Sony TV. In May, Netflix greenlighted the Lear EP-ed dramedy series The Corps, starring Vera Farmiga, Miles Heizer and Liam Oh, about a...

I truly think Norman Lear would have appreciated — and perhaps been a bit embarrassed by — The Hollywood Reporter headline acknowledging his passing.
“Norman Lear, Sitcom Genius and Citizen Activist, Dies at 101.”
The “genius” part simply expresses what’s hardest to capture when it comes to Norman Lear, whose roster of mostly broadcast sitcoms encompasses the best and brightest comedies of the past 50 years. These indelible shows stretch across multiple generations. Their very names conjure not individual moments or episodes, but an entire and wide-ranging ethos of laughter and perspective on the world around us. All in the Family. Sanford and Son. The Jeffersons. Maude. Good Times. One Day at a Time, both the original and the Cuban-American Netflix remake.
What’s hardest when it comes to Lear is perhaps finding a word or a set of words that distill the extent of his gifts, and “genius” fits like one of his signature boat hats.

A prolific TV character actor, voiceover artist, and one of the tallest performers in Hollywood has passed away. As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, Richard Moll, known by most as the tall, bald bailiff Aristotle Nostradamus "Bull" Shannon on "Night Court" and the voice of Harvey Dent/Two-Face on "Batman: The Animated Series," died at his home in Big Bear Lake, California. He was 80.
At a towering 6-foot-8-inches tall, Moll often played intimidating figures, like his first television role of "Big Thug" on "Welcome Back, Kotter," Harold the Monster on "Here's Boomer," the abominable snowman in the film "Caveman," the gigantic zombie soldier in "House," Hoagie in "The Flintstones," Mestema in "The Dungeon Master," Hugh Kane in "Scary Movie 2," and even one of the Dementors in "Jingle All the Way."

Richard Moll, the fun-loving actor who portrayed the towering and tenderhearted bailiff Aristotle Nostradamus “Bull” Shannon on all nine seasons of the popular NBC sitcom Night Court during its original run, has died. He was 80.
Moll died peacefully Thursday at his home in Big Bear Lake, California, his publicist announced.
Suitable for his 6-foot-8 frame, Moll played an abominable snowman alongside Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach in the comedy feature Caveman (1981), and he was a scary, decomposing Vietnam veteran in the horror film House (1986).
Moll also did lots of voiceover work, with a regular gig as the immortal bodyguard Norman on the syndicated series Mighty Max and turns as Harvey Dent/Two-Face for three Batman cartoons.
Moll had a shaved head — he did that to play the warrior Hurok in the sci-fi film Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn (1983) — when he auditioned for the role of Shannon on Night Court, created by Reinhold Weege.

I got my nose in around about 4th grade. Before then, I had more of a little button nose. Adorable. But from the time I was 10, the pointy chin I had pretty much since I could crawl was joined by what I think of as a prominent, somewhat regal, nose in the style of what is called a “Roman” nose. (I even saw what looked an awful lot like my exact nose on an ancient statue the first time I went to Rome as a teenager!)
I was an outgoing child who had trouble not talking to other kids during class or flirting with boys. I loved making other kids laugh with jokes and impressions. I didn’t think of myself as unattractive, but I also knew that most boys who I liked didn’t like loud, quirky girls like me who had calluses on their hands from too much time on the monkey bars.
