Pat Sajak — whose final episode after 41 seasons as host of “Wheel of Fortune” airs this Friday — has already lined up his first post-game show gig. Sajak is set to reunite with longtime buddy Joe Moore, the Khon-tv Hawai’i newscaster and actor, back on stage in a new take on the play “Prescription: Murder.”
Sajak and Moore will star opposite each other in the play at downtown Honolulu’s Hawaii Theatre next summer, from July 31 to Aug. 10, 2025. The Hawaii Theatre is set to reveal the news on Friday, via a commercial that will run on Khon-tv during Sajak’s final “Wheel” episode.
The 1962 mystery-thriller “Prescription: Murder” was written by William Link and Richard Levinson, who turned the play into the TV series “Columbo.” The plot to “Prescription: Murder” was adapted for the “Columbo” first episode.

By the mid-1950s, Alfred Hitchcock had firmly established himself as the master director of suspense films, but he still enjoyed experimenting with new technology (including 3-D) and collaborating with novice actresses. On May 29, 1954, he released “Dial M for Murder,” in which he incorporated some filmmaking fads of the day and made a star out of an actress whose short career begat a long-lasting legacy. Read on for more about the “Dial M for Murder” 70th anniversary.
The thriller was written by British playwright Frederick Knott, based on his successful stage play two years prior. When retired pro-tennis player Tony Wendice (Ray Milland) discovers his wealthy socialite wife Margot (Grace Kelly) is having an affair with their friend Mark Halliday (Robert Cummings), he decides her death would be much more profitable than a divorce. He blackmails old acquaintance Charles Swann (Anthony Dawson) to stage a break-in and murder his wife,...

First things first: Yes, Francis Galluppi is going to be directing a new movie in the “Evil Dead” franchise. And no, he can’t tell you anything about it. He can, however, prove his bona fides as a horror and suspense fan in our Zoom interview by pointing to the “Evil Dead” poster in his office and the “three Necronomicons on my desk.”
Galluppi landed the coveted gig after Sam Raimi saw Galluppi’s feature film debut, “The Last Stop in Yuma County,” the acclaimed thriller that arrives in theaters and on digital this week. Shot in 20 days on a budget of “about a million” dollars, the film is set almost entirely at road stop diner in an unspecified past era where traveling salesmen and rotary phones are still prevalent. As patrons await the arrival of a gas truck, the establishment soon becomes populated with an ensemble of independent film legends,...

There's a piece of advice that every writer gets at some point in their career, and it goes like this: "Write what you know."
It's not bad advice if you don't take it too literally. "Write what you know" doesn't mean that you should only write about your own autobiographical experiences, it means that when you do write from experience you'll probably be able to write more truthfully, more meaningfully, and in more detail than if you had to make it all up from scratch. Even if you write about strange new planets filled with creatures totally unlike anything found on Earth, you're probably better off finding an angle that speaks somehow to your personal interests, your beliefs, or your memories.
The irony of course is that as writers keep on writing, eventually "what they know" the most about is being a writer. You may have noticed that a whole...

There’s a lot riding on Avatar: The Way of Water. It may sound ridiculous to suggest that a sequel to the highest-grossing film ever made could possibly be a gamble – but it is. Thirteen years have passed since Avatar first hit screens. The cinematic landscape has been stripped bare in the interim by declining audiences, bullish competition from streaming services, and ever-dwindling investment in original ideas. James Cameron has kept the budget for The Way of Water under wraps, though has conceded that it was “very f***ing expensive”: according to the veteran filmmaker, The Way of Water needs to become the “third or fourth” highest-grossing film ever made just to break even. Beneath this game of precarious balance sheets and capitalist folly, however, there could be something else at stake: the future of 3D.

The 1984 slasher "Body Double" is one of director Brian De Palma's most blatant Hitchcock homages. If "Obsession" is "Vertigo" and "Dressed to Kill" is "Psycho," then "Body Double" is "Rear Window," as both are murder mysteries sparked by voyeurism. Struggling actor Jake Scully (Craig Wasson) is house-sitting for an acquaintance and spends his nights spying on his new neighbor Gloria (Deborah Shelton) via telescope. After a brief tryst, Jake witnesses her murder and sets about unraveling the foul play.
A key difference is how the murders unfold. In "Rear Window," Jeff (James Stewart) has been observing his neighbors while he heals from a broken leg. He falls asleep by the window one night and hears a scream. He then notices Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr) leaving his apartment throughout the night and, over the next day, realizes Thorwald's wife Anna (Irene Winston) is missing. Alfred Hitchcock will forever be remembered for his horror, but every good Hitch fan knows that the world-famous director also had a wicked sense of humor. The Italian filmmaker Dario Argento was inspired by Hitch's talent for hilarity as well as suspense. Because of Hitchcock, Argento understood that every good horror film has a healthy dose of humor in it as well. The director adopted Hitchcock's style so well that he even earned the nickname "the Italian Hitchcock" from the New York Times.
Just like Hitchcock, Argento's comedic sensibility is very twisted and singular. They both found comedy in the macabre, and their work strikes a very particular tone. Both filmmakers handled incredibly dark subjects, like murder, with levity. Take for example Hitchcock's "Rope," which centers around a murderous duo often in the throes of comedic bickering. Argento, too, sprinkles lots of unsettling yet hilarious moments in his 1975 film "Deep Red.

The Oscars don’t always get it right. There have been many notable injustices since the first ceremony took place in 1929, but surely none more surprising than the absence of Alfred Hitchcock’s name from the list of winners.
The man responsible for some of the greatest films ever made, and who committed many of cinema’s most deathless images to celluloid, never won an Academy Award despite being nominated for best director on five occasions: Rebecca in 1940, Lifeboat in 1944, Spellbound in 1945, Rear Window in 1954 and Psycho in 1960.
However, these five movies represent just a small percentage of Hitchcock’s magnificent oeuvre of 52 films. To counteract this injustice, here is my selection of his 20 greatest.
20. Blackmail (1929)
A young woman kills a man who tries to rape her and then finds herself caught between the investigating policeman, who happens to be her fiance, and a blackmailer. Generally considered to be the first British talkie,...

Alfred Hitchcock is behind several decades' worth of celebrated films, but some of the English director's best works were adaptations of stage plays. "Dial M For Murder" was one such adaptation, based on Frederick Knott's Broadway hit concerning an affair, a murder plot, and the trial that followed. Meticulously plotted and visually sparse, the thriller has one of the most satisfying endings of any of Hitchcock's films.
"Dial M For Murder" came to him from one of his previous players. "Notorious" star Cary Grant brought the project to the filmmaker with ambitions to play a hired killer, an appealing role after the suave menace he showed years earlier in Hitchcock's "Suspicion." At the time, Hitchcock was with Warner Bros., who paid thousands of British pounds for the film rights from filmmaker Alexander Korda (who had previously acquired the rights for much cheaper). After previously scrapping a feature adaptation...

Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 film "Dial M for Murder" is one of the filmmakers' delightfully nasty little thrillers wherein the audience is asked to sympathize — and ultimately kind of care for -- a horrendous villain. Ray Milland plays Tony, a retired tennis player who has learned that his wife Margot (Grace Kelly) has been having an affair with an American named Mark (Robert Cummings). Rather than merely divorce, Tony elects to have Margot murdered. He colludes with an old criminal buddy named Charles (Anthony Dawson) to commit the murder for him. Charles, being blackmailed, agrees.
What follows is a hotbox procedural tracing Tony's plan for the murder, the elements that go right, and the elements that go horribly, horribly wrong. Most notably: When Charles attacks Margot, she fights back and kills him with a pair of scissors. Oops.
"Dial M for Murder" was filmed in 3D, and it's difficult to understand why.

1982 was a watershed year in terms of theatrical exhibition. The hit-cluttered summer release schedule -- which included all-timers like "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," "Poltergeist" and "An Officer and a Gentleman" -- firmly established the season as a commercial goldmine. Tucked in between the blockbusters and bombs was the modest sensation of "Friday the 13th Part 3." Directed by steady studio hand Steve Miner, the second sequel in the Paramount franchise sought to spice up its slasher formula by shooting in native 3D.
The format gamble worked. "Friday the 13th Part 3" opened to a then massive 9.3 million over the August 13 weekend, outgrossing "E.T." and compelling studios to consider wringing a few extra drops out of their flagging franchises by embracing the outmoded optical gimmickry. It worked -- for a couple of years, at least.

Jimmy Stewart starred in four Alfred Hitchcock films. The first was the most difficult to shoot, and it almost proved to be a hurdle to the classics that would follow. In Hitchcock's 1948 thriller "Rope," the director continued his experiments in filming the action in a single setting — something he had begun in 1944 with "Lifeboat" and would carry further in 1954 with the one-two punch of "Dial 'M' for Murder" and "Rear Window." The plot of "Rope" involves two murder accomplices, played by John Gall and Farley Granger, who host a dinner party in a room with a dead body hidden in a...

In the first episode of “Ragdoll,” the new cat-and-mouse cop show from “Killing Eve” creators Sid Gentle, the lead trio of detectives played by Lucy Hale, Henry Lloyd-Hughes and Thalissa Teixeira encounter a cadaver (the titular Ragdoll) stitched together from the limbs, torso and head of six separate murder victims, strung up from the ceiling.
Even Hale, a self-confessed true-crime fan, was disturbed by the gruesome sight. “I’m pretty good at compartmentalizing, obviously, what I do for a living [and] who I am, what’s real, what’s not real,” the “Pretty Little Liars” alum tells Variety.
“But this day in particular was so strange because the three of us decided not to see the Ragdoll before we shot that scene. And when we saw it, I mean, you’re kind of speechless,” she says. “It looks like a real human: the detail, the skin colour, the hair. It was dripping,...

HBO has ordered a limited series based on Olivier Assayas’ 1996 feature film Irma Vep, with Alicia Vikander on board to star and exec produce.
Vikander, who won the Oscar for best supporting actress for The Danish Girl, will play Mira, an American movie star disillusioned by her career and a recent breakup, who moves to France to star as Irma Vep in a remake of the French silent film classic Les Vampires.
The series, loosely based on the film, will be written and directed by Assayas, who revealed he was working on the adaptation back in May. It will be produced by the team behind HBO’s Euphoria: A24, Sam Levinson and Kevin Turen.
Feature film Irma Vep starred Maggie Cheung as herself and Jean-Pierre Leaud as the middle-aged French film director. It screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the 1996 Cannes Film Festival.

Alicia Vikander is teaming with French indie director Olivier Assayas for an HBO show.
The cabler has ordered “Irma Vep,” a limited series loosely based on on Assayas’ 1996 film of the same name, with Vikander in the lead role.
Assayas will write and direct the project which revolves around Mira (Vikander), an American movie star disillusioned by her career and a recent breakup, who comes to France to star as “Irma Vep” in a remake of the French silent film classic, “Les Vampires.” Set against the backdrop of a lurid crime thriller, Mira struggles as the distinctions between herself and the character she plays begin to blur and merge.
The original film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival and starred Maggie Cheung as a fictionalized version of herself.
“When the opportunity arose to partner with Alicia and Olivier we jumped at the chance,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO programming in a statement.

HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television are going to have to find someone else to preside over Gotham P.D.
Terence Winter, who was in line to write and showrun the forthcoming spinoff series of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” feature, has exited the project over creative differences, Variety has confirmed.
News of his departure comes five months after the show was handed a straight-to-series order at HBO Max. It also comes less than 24 hours after another Winter project came out of the woodwork in the form of a “Dial M For Murder” anthology series starring Alicia Vikander.
The untitled Gotham P.D. show will be set in the world Reeves is creating for the feature film, with the intent being to launch a new Batman universe across WarnerMedia multiple platforms. It is said to build on the film’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City. It is...

I once suggested that Hollywood should remake Dial M For Murder, playwright Frederick Knott’s dynamite stage play which was famously adapted into a movie by Alfred Hitchcock in 1954. Three years later, my suggestion is finally being heeded: a remake is being developed for television, with Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander executive producing and potentially starring in the […]

A “Dial M for Murder” anthology series from Alicia Vikander and Terence Winter is in development at MGM/UA Television, TheWrap has learned.
Winter will executive produce the series, based on the 1952 Frederick Knott play and subsequent Alfred Hitchcock film adaptation. The series is said to retell the crime drama from a female perspective, with Vikander eyed to star.
“Vinyl” alum Michael Mitnick is writer and creator on the series, with Winter overseeing.
Charles Collier of Vikander’s Vikarious Film banner will also executive produce alongside Andrew Mittman of 1.21 and Lloyd Braun.
Knott previously adapted his own play for Hitchcock’s 1954 film adaptation, which starred Ray Milland, Grace Kelly, Robert Cummings, Anthony Dawson, and John Williams. NBC previously aired a feature adaptation starring the original Broadway cast in 1958, and ABC produced its own version in 1968. No network is attached to the new anthology.

Normally, we’d look at a remake of “Dial M For Murder” and ask, “Why?” The original play and subsequent film directed by Alfred Hitchcock are classics. So, why mess with a good thing? Well, when you have talent like Terence Winter and Alicia Vikander on board, that makes the justification a bit easier to understand.
