Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez still feels the pressure of being a one-man army when it comes to promoting the crown jewel of Somos Arte, his independent creative studio. Since 2016 he's been at the forefront of every campaign surrounding his creation La Borinqueña. The Puerto Rican superheroine has been the star of a series of self-titled graphic novels that have directly tackled cultural topics and current events at the forefront of the island, all through the lens of a superhero yarn. It's an effort that's earned him a humanitarian award at the 2019 Eisner Awards (the comics industry's Academy Awards), collaborations with Hollywood stars such as Rosario Dawson, and crossovers with DC Comics's biggest characters like Wonder Woman. But even with all the accolades, he makes it clear, it's always been an uphill battle.

This post contains mild spoilers for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."
The character of Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), while finding his print origins in the Marvel Comics of 1960, was first introduced to film audiences in James Gunn's 2014 film "Guardians of the Galaxy." Groot was an intelligent, eight-foot humanoid tree, able to rapidly grow roots and branches from his body in the heat of battle. His only line of dialogue, repeated in all situations was "I am Groot," a phrase that those close to him could easily decipher (very much the way human characters respond to R2-D2's beeping in the "Star Wars" movies). The apparently elderly Groot served as the titular team's "muscle" character, while his best friend Rocket Raccoon (voice of Bradley Cooper) served as the brains.
During the climax of the first "Guardians" movie, Groot and several other members of the team found themselves near an explosion.

Edgardo Miranda-Rodríguez cares a lot — about his family, his homeland, and yes, about superheroes, too.
Born in New Jersey but raised between the Bronx and Puerto Rico, Miranda-Rodríguez saw firsthand the discrimination that Nuyoricans were subjected to in the Seventies and Eighties. He often turned to the escapism of comic books, which weren’t just a distraction from the inequity around him — they also provided a model of justice. ”’Superhero storytelling, from a very very traditional standpoint, are narratives centered around hope, centered around the best parts of our humanity...

In the coming days, Bad Bunny is set to appear opposite Brad Pitt in the summer blockbuster "Bullet Train," but don't call it a crossover. We're talking about a Puerto Rican reggaetonero who is undeniably the biggest pop music artist in the world right now and is still committed to only putting out music in Spanish.
"I never made a song thinking, Man, this is for the world. This is to capture the gringo audience. Never. On the contrary, I make songs as if only Puerto Ricans were going to listen to them. I still think I'm there making music, and it's for Puerto Ricans. I forget the entire world listens to me," he said in an interview with GQ earlier this year. Benito expressed a similar sentiment in an interview with El País last year. "Hay que romper eso de que los gringos son dioses . . . No,...

Netflix's episode of "Love, Death + Robots" Vol. 3 titled "Jibaro" was recently nominated for an Emmy for outstanding short form animated program. The short was directed by Spanish director Alberto Mielgo, who won an Oscar earlier this year for his short animated film "The Windshield Wiper." For those unfamiliar with Netflix's "Love, Death + Robots," the series consists of a collection of animated shorts that all center on three core themes: love, death, and robots. Sounds simple enough, right? But there's a lot more abstraction, complexity, and depth than one would imagine. While the short was created with the intention to leave room for many different interpretations, one thing that's not clear - particularly for Latinx viewers - is why it was named "Jibaro."
