Are you ready to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Actor? Before you do, be sure to scroll through our photo gallery showcasing the men who are most likely to earn slots in the 76th annual lineup. Naturally, “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White is widely expected to achieve a second consecutive victory and thereby maintain his perfect Emmys record.
White would be the fourth actor in 10 years to earn this specific award for both of his show’s first two seasons, following Jeffrey Tambor, Bill Hader, and Jason Sudeikis.
The only other 2023 comedy actor nominee in the running again this year is Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”). His costar and 2022 opponent, Steve Martin, is looking to make a comeback, as are six-time contender Larry David (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Jon Cryer, who won in 2012 for “Two and a Half Men” and now headlines “Extended Family.”

Exclusive: Justin Calen-Chenn, a staff writer on Netflix’s recent crime action series The Brothers Sun from creators Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu, has signed with M88 for management.
Starring Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, Justin Chien and Sam Song Li, the show watched as Charles Sun (Chien), a Taipei gangster who’d settled into his life as a ruthless killer, headed to L.A. to protect his mother and younger brother after his father was shot by a mysterious assassin.
Calen-Chenn drew on much of his own personal life experience in the writers’ room, having been homeless as a teenager and fallen into a life of crime before departing that life many years later after a severe tragedy occurred.
Previously serving as an executive story editor on the second season of Peacock’s Bel-Air, from EPs including Will Smith and Malcolm Spellman, the Taiwanese-American creative is a writer and co-producer on the forthcoming third season.

The Brothers Sun may not get another season on Netflix, but there’s plenty more to enjoy from the stars Justin Chien and Sam Song Li, who played the titular siblings, Charles and Bruce. The performers stopped by TV Insider’s New York City offices for a round of Knock Your Blocks Off, where they had a chance to share their own TV interests, reveal interesting behind-the-scenes facts, and much more. As they dig into the stack of question-covered blocks, Chien is the first one up, pulling a block posing the question of which fictional character he’d like to fight. (Credit: Courtesy of Netflix) The prompt fitting for the star of a show that features plenty of action leads Chien to answer, “I’d want to fight Kendall Roy in Succession,” in reference to Jeremy Strong‘s character in the former HBO hit. “Because you’d be the eldest boy,...

The Brothers Sun premiered on Netflix on January 4 and just a few days ago, the show was revealed to be cancelled after one season by the streaming giant. The show offered a darkly comedic unraveling of a secret turf war between crime factions experienced through a naive son in one of the families. The series received a fresh critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes as well as a high viewer score. In the review from our own Alex Maidy, he said, “The Brothers Sun could be the first solid binge of 2024. With a good amount of action, a great amount of heart, and characters worth investing in, this series manages to blend elements of the series Netflix has been importing for years with an original story rooted in Hollywood storytelling.”

What ensues is an action-packed adventure that tests their family bonds as they band together against countless enemies. Unfortunately, loose threads remain hanging after the show’s cancellation on Netflix,...

The sun sets on yet another Netflix production, as it has been announced that The Brothers Sun has been canceled after just one season.
The Brothers Sun received high praise for its handling of material both intense and sweet, but as we all know that is hardly ever enough to ensure a series gets a second season. And so those that watched the series will only ever have those eight episodes, which all hit Netflix at the beginning of the year.
Co-created by Byron Wu and frequent Ryan Murphy collaborator Brad Falchuk, The Brothers Sun was a perfect follow-up to Everything Everywhere All at Once for Michelle Yeoh, as it also meshed genres (though not as wildly) and gave the star a space to expand her Western audience base. The show spent five weeks in the Netflix Top 10 for English-language series, peaking at No. 2, but it couldn’t find a large audience. Its performance was modest by Netflix standards, with its number of weekly views staying below 7 million and slipping under 2 million for its last two weeks in the Top 10.
Described as a dark comedic drama and family soap, The Brothers Sun follows a Taipei gangster, Charles Sun (Chien), who’s settled...

Netflix’s The Brothers Sun had a solid opening on Nielsen’s streaming charts, but the show took a sizable leap forward in its second week of release.
The series, starring Michelle Yeoh, Sam Song Li and Justin Chien, grew by 38 percent over its debut week to record 960 million minutes of viewing for Jan. 8-14. That was good for third place among original series, behind Fool Me Once (2.4 billion minutes of viewing) — which was also the No. 1 overall title for the second straight week — and Reacher (1.06 billion), which recorded its fifth straight week over the billion-minute mark.
Disney+ and Hulu also saw a good start for Echo, its first binge-released Marvel series and the first Marvel show in the Disney+ era to receive a TV-ma rating. The five-episode show drew 731 million minutes of viewing for the week. That’s above recent premieres for shows like Loki and Secret Invasion, but...

“Have you eaten?”
It’s a simple yes or no question, but as Mama Sun (Michelle Yeoh) demonstrates in The Brothers Sun, food is a love language in many Asian cultures. Creators Byron Wu and Brad Falchuk’s series follows a Taiwanese matriarch and her sons Charles (Justin Chien) and Bruce (Sam Song Li), who lead a not-so-normal life in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley. Despite their differences, the family usually finds time to share a meal together — in between all the dangerous gang affairs they’re embroiled in.
“You can’t tell an Asian story without food being involved, especially with family. There’s just no way to separate the two,” Wu told Netflix.
As Charles arrives from Taiwan and reacquaints himself with his family, food becomes that bridge. “They haven’t seen each other in such a long time, but over the meals it seems like that...

If there is something positive about the existence of streaming platforms in recent times, it's the explosion of quality television series that we haven't experienced for several decades. There is something for everyone, even for TV sceptics who are not easily convinced to step out of the cinema or from what they concern as a serious screening content. Almost four years ago, during the Mastercard event at the Venice Film Festival, Brian de Palma confessed that he was hooked to the comedy-drama series “Dead To Me” starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, admitting that he was watching television more than ever before due to a big improvement in quality of productions. Liz Feldman wasn't in the audience, but I was, glad to hear that such a legend and I are sharing the same passion for the show.

Actor Justin Chien, who plays Charles Sun on Netflix’s The Brothers Sun, is one of the series’ most notable faces (for obvious reasons). Although The Brothers Sun is far from Chien’s on-screen acting debut, playing the older Sun brother will be a career-defining role for the actor. With its premiere in early 2024, The Brother Sun raised the standard for the year’s upcoming action comedy-drama series. Introduced in the opening scene of the pilot episode of The Brothers Sun, Justin Chien’s character fight scenes quickly helped set the tone of the series. Alongside the character’s humor, Chien’s performance has received...

In Netflix’s San Gabriel-based crime action–comedy The Brothers Sun, actor Sam Song Li plays Bruce Sun, a kind-hearted college student who dreams of being a master of improv despite his mother’s wishes for him to be a doctor. However, his life gets turned upside down upon the arrival of his long-estranged brother, Charles (Justin Chien), a cutthroat assassin who enlists the help of their mother, Mama Sun (Michelle Yeoh), to take down a dangerous crime syndicate. Throughout the eight-episode series, co-created by Byron Wu and Brad Falchuk, Bruce has to contend with learning that his family, unbeknownst to him, are major players in one of the most lucrative and dangerous gangster businesses in Taiwan.
Here, Li speaks with Deadline about reconciling his own desires against family expectations as an actor, his inspirations and similarities to his character, working with Michelle Yeoh and the importance of Asian American representation on screen.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains mild spoilers for “The Brothers Sun,” available to watch on Netflix now.
On May 22, 1992, three men brutally stabbed Japanese filmmaker Juzo Itami outside his Tokyo home, just days after the release of his satire “Minbo no Onna,” or “Mob Woman.”
The director of “Tampopo” and “A Taxing Woman” suffered slash wounds across the face, neck and shoulder, but ultimately survived. Police suspected the attack may have been the yakuza’s retaliation for Itami’s “Mob Woman,” which portrays Japanese gangsters as crude bullies who are outsmarted by lawyer Mahiru Inoue (played by Itami’s wife Nobuko Miyamoto).
This assault inspired writer-producer Byron Wu to develop “The Brothers Sun,” the crime family dramedy starring Michelle Yeoh as matriarch Eileen “Mama” Sun, which premiered on Netflix early this year.

New year, old grudges: The bold new crime drama The Brothers Sun has arrived on Netflix, telling a thrilling tale of a Taiwanese American family who, unable to outrun their past, get caught in the middle of a transpacific gang war.
From creators Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu, the dynamic eight-part action series stars Oscar winner and action icon Michelle Yeoh as Eileen Sun, the wife of a Taiwanese triad kingpin (Johnny Kou), who escaped her home for Los Angeles after provoking the ire of some of the most vicious gangsters in Taipei.
When an attempt is made on her husband’s life years later, however, Eileen knows she’s in danger again, too. Her older son, Charles (Justin Chien), who’s followed in his father’s footsteps, joins her in California to protect her and his younger brother, Bruce (Sam Song Li), who’s grown up blissfully ignorant about his family’s shocking business.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Brothers Sun Season 1.] Netflix‘s new series The Brothers Sun is a non-stop action ride from beginning to end, but as the 10-episode first season came to a close, a major question is raised: Should the show return for Season 2? Created by Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu, The Brothers Sun tells the story of Charles “Chairleg” Sun (Justin Chien), the eldest son of a powerful Taiwanese triad who is shot by a mystery assassin. Following his father’s life-threatening ordeal, Charles takes off for Los Angeles to protect his mother Eileen (Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh) and his young brother Bruce (Sam Song Li). (Credit: Courtesy of Netflix) The catch? Bruce has been kept in the dark about his family’s criminal exploits, having been sheltered his whole life by living in America. Violence and danger come crashing into their front door though when Charles returns, and as Taipei’s deadliest...

A Mandarin cover of Cat Stevens’ “The First Cut Is the Deepest” isn’t the first song you’d expect to hear during a karate brawl.
In Episode 6 of The Brothers Sun, eldest son Charles (Justin Chien) arrives at a golfing range after learning that his friend is being held hostage by rival gangsters. Filled with rage and heartbreak, he fights anyone standing in his path, swinging golf clubs at his enemies. As the steel handles clash and gang members grunt in pain, Bo Wang’s Chinese cover of Stevens’ melancholic classic accompanies the violent sound effects.
“I think it does such a great job of underscoring how this is an emotional thing for Charles. We’re having a great time, and we’re watching him beat the piss out of a bunch of people,” co-creator and writer Brad Falchuk told Netflix.

Of the many dangers of the martial arts madness of The Brothers Sun, one particular hazard stands alone: churro dust.
In an exclusive behind-the-scenes blooper reel, Justin Chien — who plays eldest Sun brother, Charles — cracks open a crispy delicious churro only to be reverse Salt Bae-d with a scattershot of sugar and cinnamon straight to the eyes. Don’t worry, Chien survived… barely.
But that’s not the only on-set calamity revealed in the blooper reel. Sam Song Li, who plays Bruce, the younger Sun, becomes engorged with an internal burp cloud and then releases a noxious waft that resounds within his Nissan.
Then there’s Li trying to smash a childproof plastic chair — perhaps an attempt to re-create his brother’s murderous moniker “Chairleg” — but the chair fights back, nearly impaling him with its bouncy aquamarine safety plastic body. It’s terrifying. And adorable.

There’s a moment early in Episode 2 of “The Brothers Sun” that goes way harder than it needs to. It’s not any of the bodily dismemberment as gangster Charlie (Justin Chien) breaks up the pieces of an assassin with the calm help of his mother, Eileen (Michelle Yeoh), while his estranged younger brother Bruce (Sam Song Li) looks on in horror. It’s not the ambush where Charlie and Bruce need to escape hitmen wearing inflatable dinosaur costumes. It’s not any of the machinations of the Taipei gangsters now gunning for the Sun family. It’s just this little beat of Yeoh sitting at a vanity, taking a moment amid the massive disruption to her life brought by Charlie’s arrival from Taipei and the failed hit on her husband Big Sun (Johnny Kou).

Bǎohù jiārén. Protect the family.
Not only is that the title of the Season 1 finale of The Brothers Sun, but it’s also the mantra of Byron Wu and Brad Falchuk’s action-drama series. And after spending 15 years torn apart by patriarch Big Sun (Johnny Kou), who only wanted to protect his crime family, “Mama” Eileen (Michelle Yeoh), Charles (Justin Chien), and Bruce Sun (Sam Song Li) have had enough.
In Episode 8, they decide to finally step out of Big Sun’s shadow to redefine what family means. For once in their lives, they choose their own path — to each other. “This is a fractured family story about picking each other back up and bringing love back together into the family,” executive producer and director Kevin Tancharoen told Netflix.

In Netflix's new action-packed drama series, Bruce's life is upended when his older brother, Charles (Justin Chien), who turns out to be a Taiwanese gangster, comes to LA to protect their mom, Eileen (Michelle Yeoh). When Li first read the script, he quickly learned he shared a number of "shockingly close" similarities with his onscreen counterpart. Like Bruce, the 27-year-old actor and content creator was raised by a single mom in the San Gabriel Valley, CA, a predominantly Asian American community where the series partially takes place. What do barbecue tongs, a pineapple, and an electric mosquito racket all have in common? In The Brothers Sun, these ordinary objects become implements of destruction in the deadly hands of Taiwanese triad gang killer Charles Sun, played by Justin Chien.
His impromptu arsenal includes rolling pins, golf clubs, and a rusty wrench — unsurprising for a man whose proclivity for creative violence earned him the name Chairleg. (Spoiler alert: That name is Not related to his carpentry skills.)
The stone-faced assassin can fight anyone, anywhere, whether it’s masked ninjas in a Korean spa or dinosaur-suited brawlers at a children’s birthday party. But behind these on-screen antics, there’s a team that brings the action to life.

Crime stories, action series, and comedies rarely converge satisfactorily. In recent years, Netflix has taken stock in presenting shows and films from Japan, Korea, China, and India that embrace this blend of genres and techniques. Like the recent show Obliterated, Netflix is banking on the star power of Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh and superproducer Brad Falchuk. Co-created with Byron Wu, The Brothers Sun is an international production between Taiwan and Los Angeles that brings new talent to the forefront in Sam Song Li and Justin Chien.
Here’s the plot of The Brothers Sun:
“When the head of a powerful Taiwanese triad is shot by a mysterious assassin, his eldest son, legendary killer Charles “Chairleg” Sun (Justin Chien) heads to Los Angeles to protect his mother, Eileen (Michelle Yeoh), and his naive younger brother, Bruce (Sam Song Li) — who’s been completely sheltered from the truth of his family until now.

Acclaimed actress Michelle Yeoh doesn’t want her newborn grandchild to see ‘Wicked’.
On the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of her Netflix series ‘The Brothers Sun’, she asked Yeoh what film of hers she would want her grandson, Maxime, to see first.
Yeoh mused for a while, bringing up her upcoming project, Jon M. Chu’s ‘Wicked’, in which she plays school headmistress Madame Morrible, before ultimately deciding against it, reports Variety.

“What is not going to traumatise them?” She concluded: “Maybe not one of my movies. Until they’re older.”

What would you do if you discovered that your once-ordinary life was built on the foundation of one of Taiwan’s largest (and successful) organized crime families? Netflix’s crime comedy The Brothers Sun runs the gamut and the streets of the San Gabriel Valley for answers. Co-created by Byron Wu and Brad Falchuk, the eight-episode series follows the Sun family matriarch, Eileen Sun (Michelle Yeoh), who, after falling in love with a “country boy,” became second in command to one of the most lucrative and dangerous gangster businesses in Taiwan. Because of the potential threats on her family, she decides to spare her youngest son, Bruce (Sam Song Li), from the violent family business and moves with him to Los Angeles while leaving her older son, Charles (Justin Chien), back in Taiwan with his father (Johnny Kou) who turned him into a cutthroat assassin.
