Matthew Vaughn is a savvy filmmaker who should know his films, particularly when they go sailing over the top narratively and tonally — which describes pretty much all of them save for his 2004 debut directorial effort, "Layer Cake" and the open-hearted whimsy of "Stardust" — tend to divide critics. You either go with the rousingly ultraviolent superhero satire of "Kick-Ass," or you rage against its vile excesses, chief among them being the transformation of an 11-year-old into a gun-wielding, slicing-and-dicing whirlwind of death known as Hit Girl. He specializes in juvenile subversion, but if you can get past the giddy excess of his films, they occasionally contain a surprising degree of thematic depth.

The espionage thriller Argylle, helmed by Matthew Vaughn, has sparked strong reactions since its January 2024 release. Despite its star-studded cast, including Bryce Dallas Howard, Henry Cavill, and Dua Lipa, the film faced harsh critical reviews. Director Shocked by Negative Feedback Vaughn expressed his surprise at the vitriolic reception: We didn't make 'Citizen Kane', but then the reviews came out, and I'm like, 'Wait, what have I done to offend these people?’ Unexpected Downturn Despite Positive Test Screenings Before its release, Argylle received positive feedback in test screenings. Vaughn shared: We had done test screenings that had gone fantastically well.

Sometime in 1984, when E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg saw a bunch of potential covers for Bruce Springsteen’s next album, he instantly noticed the Annie Leibovitz shot of the singer’s jeans-clad rear end. “My comment, jokingly, was ‘I like that one because that’s the view I always have,'” Weinberg says in the new episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. “Everybody laughed, and then they picked that shot. And it was a steamroller after that.”

Henry Cavill’s biggest flop of the year surprised director Matthew Vaughn in ways he did not expect. The filmmaker, who also helmed the successful Kingsman franchise, thought the 2024 spy thriller film would be a nice feel-good show for everyone, but what happened was the complete opposite.
Henry Cavill in Argylle / Universal Pictures
Argylle was peppered with harsh criticism from fans and reviewers. Over the past years, there has been an oversaturation of espionage-themed movies in the market, but the root cause of its failure was the early negative reviews that discouraged fans from giving it a chance.
Matthew Vaughn Addressed The Failure Of Argylle
During an interview with Empire, director Matthew Vaughn confessed he initially had a great feeling about Argylle.
We had done test screenings that had gone fantastically well. The premiere was a really fun night, and it was like going back to the ‘Snatch’ days where there was such excitement.

'Argylle' director Matthew Vaughn was hurt by the "vitriolic" reaction to his movie. The 53-year-old filmmaker was at the helm of the star studded spy comedy - which featured the likes of Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena and Samuel L. Jackson - and he admitted the poor reaction from critics and many fans left him disappointed and "rattled".He told Empire magazine: “My guard came down on 'Argylle'. With a track record of turning stories into sensational films, Matthew Vaughn has already astonished us with his directorial finesse. Unfortunately, in addition to creating critically acclaimed flicks like Layer Cake, Stardust, X-Men: First Class, and Kingsman: The Secret Service, he has also directed films that fell flat with critics. That being said, his recent release—Argylle—starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, and Henry Cavill—has failed to capture the hearts of theatergoers.
Despite not breaking even at the box office, the film performed well on streaming platforms. While the box office numbers are still rolling in, with Vaughn at the helm and the film gaining traction, Argylle appears to be ripe for expansion.

Matthew Vaughn has managed to establish himself as a brand name when action comedies are concerned. He managed to achieve success with the Kingsman series, but his filmography includes other interesting titles such as Stardust (2007), Kick-Ass (2010), and X-Men: First Class (2011). Vaughn is definitely a director who is interesting and who knows his trade, but his most recent feature, Argylle, was a complete flop, despite a potentially intriguing premise and a star-filled cast. The critics have panned the Kingsman spin-off, and it was a disaster at the box office, earning less than $100 million against a $200 million budget.
In a recent talk with Empire magazine, Vaughn discussed the reception of Argylle, and the director was not shy about expressing his disappointment with how it all turned out for the movie. He believes firmly that the movie was not that bad and that the reactions were simply too harsh.

Those Taylor Swift Easter-egg rumors didn’t help “Argylle” any at the box office, but director Matthew Vaughn felt more dismayed by the film’s “vitriolic” reviews than he did the ticket sales, according to a new interview with Empire.

Before the release of “Argylle,” there was a lot of discussion about Matthew Vaughn’s spy film. First, it was purchased by Apple for a reported sum of $200 million. That’s a huge number, obviously. Then, the discussion went on about the all-star cast– Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, and even pop star Dua Lipa.

The 59th Academy of Country Music Awards are behind us. The show featured some surprise winners amidst expected victories for artists like Lainey Wilson and Luke Combs. As the first major country awards precursor of the year, some of the winners might strike a chord with Grammy voters.

Chris Stapleton’s “Higher” might be coming
One of the show’s biggest wins was “Higher” claiming Album of the Year. The record faced off against Morgan Wallen’s ginormous hit “One Thing at a Time,” the follow-up to his also-huge “Dangerous: The Double Album.” Wallen looked like a strong contender, not only due to his commercial numbers, but because “Dangerous” had previously taken the award home, which was significant considering that it came amidst Morgan’s industry backlash for using a racial slur. Back in 1997, Disney’s Hercules became a massive hit, earning a total of $252.7 million on an $85 million budget, which was an exceptional amount of money at the time. It also became a part of history as one of Disney’s most beloved animated features. The original movie featured the voice talents of Tate Donovan (as Hercules), Danny DeVito (as Philoctetes), James Woods (as Hades), and Susan Egan (as Megara), but the House of the Mouse thinks it is time for a remake and so a live-action version is coming along. Guy Ritchie has signed on to direct and while we don’t have any known cast members for you, we have some interesting rumors.

Saturday Night Live remains a hit with the youth.
The long-running NBC show, which just finished up Season 49, remained the number one entertainment series across ad-supported broadcast and cable in the 18-49 demo for the 2023-24 season.
It earned a 1.13 in the demo, beating out series such as Fox’s Krapopolis, which got a 1.1, and CBS’ Survivor and Tracker, which both got a 1.0.
This meant that the show was the number one comedy in the demo for the fifth season in a row.
This was, however, down from numbers posted over the last few years. For instance, in 2021, the show got a 2.06 in the demo. That year it drew 9 million total viewers overall in Live+7 numbers.
In the 2023/24 broadcast season, the show averaged 7.2 million viewers, per Nielsen. This was up 3% from last year.
These numbers, particularly among younger viewers, were presumably helped by hosts such as Pete Davidson, Bad Bunny,...

The alternative music scene is having a great 2024. This year has given us a great array of albums in the genre, including the return of many iconic artists from the past 15 years. With that said, all eyes so far are on what seems to be a three-way race for the Best Alternative Music Album Grammy, which is led by three previous winners looking to repeat.
The first of the three is Brittany Howard, who is sure to be nominated for her sophomore solo project, “What Now.” She previously swept the alternative and rock categories with her band Alabama Shakes back in 2016. Her debut solo album, “Jaime,” was also a success at the Grammys, earning five nominations including a win for Best Rock Song (“Stay High”). Could Michael B. Jordan be out as the hero of Olympus? Could a Kingsman alumni be scooping up the role instead?
In a recent discussion on Disney rumors, The DisInsider‘s Skyler Shuler and Boardwalk Times‘ Zach Perilstein had some exciting news regarding the casting of upcoming movies. We’ve known for sometime that both actors were being eyed by Disney for the lead, but something may have recently changed.

In 1997, Disney released its animated film Hercules, which became a major hit globally. It earned an amazing $252.7 million on an $85 million budget, which was an exceptional amount of money back then, and it made history as one of Disney’s most beloved animated features. The original movie featured the voice talents of Tate Donovan (as Hercules), Danny DeVito (as Philoctetes), James Woods (as Hades), and Susan Egan (as Megara), some of who reprised their roles in the sequel animated series and the animated prequel. But, with Disney doing its series of live-action remakes of its animated classics, we know that Hercules is also being remade, and some recent rumors suggest that we have a chief candidate for the role of Megara!
These rumors come from Skyler Shuler, a well-known Disney insider, who has taken the time to answer some of the fans’ questions, one of which also had to do...

Following persistent rumors, we got word that Disney was officially moving forward with a live-action remake of Hercules back in 2022, with Aladdin director Guy Ritchie set to helm the project and Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo on board as producers.
Updates have been few and far between since then, and we're still waiting to find out which actors are going to bring life to the main characters.
Previous rumors have claimed that Taron Edgerton and Ariana Grande were up for the roles of Hercules and Meg, and while there's every chance they will end up being cast, we may be able to add another name to the mix for the movie's female lead.
According to reliable Disney source the DisInsider, pop megastar turned actress Dua Lipa might be a contender to play Meg. He doesn't say whether she's actually in talks, only that the studio "likes" her for the part.

“Saturday Night Live” ended its 49th season on May 18, and now all eyes are set for the fall of 2024, when the monumental 50th season will begin. “I get awestruck at that idea and that concept,” reveals Bowen Yang, who just wrapped up his fifth year as a cast member. “It’s all tied back to [showrunner and creator] Lorne Michaels and all of the producers who’ve been on that journey with him and us, and who’ve supported people and launched their careers. Within the next year, the memories, evaluations, assessments, and historical judgements of the impact and legacy of Saturday Night Live will become like a great song you’ve always enjoyed but suddenly can’t rid from your beleaguered brain as the show approaches its 50th anniversary special in February 2025.
So let’s not get into that.
Let’s instead take note that the 49th season, which wrapped up Saturday with another fine hosting job—this one by Jake Gyllenhaal—was damn good. Meaning: a high percentage of the episodes were above average, and several, especially during a strong run of hosts this spring—Kristen Wiig, Ryan Gosling, Dua Lipa, Maya Rudolph, and Gyllenhaal—were well above average.
Such a season-long performance should not be smiled about, patted on the head, and sent on its way. It should be celebrated, because putting on a live 90-minute comedy show 20 times a year is a feat.

Going into the 2024 ACM Awards, you didn’t have to be clairvoyant to nail some key predictions.
