Have you ever wondered about the intricate behind-the-scenes dynamics that can influence the trajectory of a TV show and the careers of those involved? Such is the tale of how Marisa Tomei—known to many as the heartwarming Aunt May in the MCU—faced a fork in her path to stardom after a brief but impactful stint on NBC’s A Different World.
As a vibrant Hillman College student, Maggie Lauton, Tomei made a brief appearance in the debut season before a provocative storyline led to her unceremonious exit. Debbie Allen, who assumed the producer’s mantle from season two onward, had ambitious plans for exploring Tomei’s character.

Sixteen years after shocking moviegoers with random acts of violence in Bryan Bertino's The Strangers, the trio of masked murderers are slicing back onto the big screen in Lionsgate's The Strangers – Chapter 1, the first installment of a new trilogy of terror.
Daily Dead was thrilled and chilled to attend the world premiere of The Strangers – Chapter 1 in Los Angeles, and we have highlights from my spoiler-free red carpet conversations with the cast and crew as well as some special guests who showed up at the premiere, including Kel Mitchell (Good Burger 2) and Zaria (Pretty Little Liars: Summer School)!

Horror films can often be the red-headed stepchild of the entertainment industry. They’re rarely treated with the same glitz and glam of other genres. So the fact that Lionsgate is pulling out all the stops for The Strangers: Chapter 1 is a good sign of their faith in their trilogy. Because yes, this is the beginning of not just one solo outing but an entire trio of films for audiences to take head-on. So I was happy the film was getting not just a big theatrical release after being rumored for straight to streaming, it even got a big Hollywood Red Carpet premiere. And I was lucky enough to be able to attend!
Being my first ever Red Carpet, I obviously don’t have a whole lot to compare it to but I was very impressed. The Red Carpet was made of burlap and they had various Strangers lurking around.

We live in a society that insists if you work hard, you can probably achieve the goals you've set for yourself. But "Problemista," the first feature film by writer and comedian Julio Torres, which is now in theaters worldwide, poses the question: is working hard always enough? Loosely based off of Torres's own immigration experience, the film follows Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador struggling to make his dream a reality in New York City who loses his job and desperately needs to secure a sponsor to stay in the States. Even after taking a freelance assistant gig with an erratic art critic named Elizabeth (played by Tilda Swinton), Alejandro (played by Torres) finds himself in one of the most relentless and nightmarish mazes of American bureaucracy - the US immigration system.

A simple Google search of "the best rom-coms of all time" will take you down a nostalgic hole of '90s and early-'00s movies like "10 Things I Hate About You," "While You Were Sleeping," and "P.S. I Love You." These classics, among many others, have shaped how we view love on screen. But through these films, we've learned what love looks like through white protagonists; many Bipoc communities have failed to see themselves reflected. While we saw Latine actresses like Salma Hayek, Jennifer Lopez, and Christina Milian make their mark early on in romantic comedy movies, for years the entertainment industry has undervalued and underrepresented Latine communities on screen and behind the camera.
Camila Mendes is shifting that narrative. You likely recognize her from rom-coms like "Palm Springs," "The Perfect Date," and "The New Romantic" - and she's starring in and serving as an an executive producer for the new rom-com film "Música,...

The premiere week of Netflix’s “Ripley” elbowed “3 Body Problem” out of the No. 1 slot among streaming original series for the week of April 5-11, according to Luminate streaming ratings.
Among streaming original movies, “Scoop” managed a solid break for Netflix while Amazon Prime Video’s “Road House” hung tough in its third full week in release, as reported by Luminate in its weekly Top 10 Streaming Originals charts for series and movies.
“Ripley,” the much talked-about adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s classic fraudster saga “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” from Oscar-winning screenwriter Steve Zaillian, debuted with about 670.1 million minutes watched across its eight episodes. That translates to about 1.5 million views.
A sleeper entrant at No. 2 was Netflix’s unscripted crime docu “Files of the Unexplained,” with 531.3 million minutes watched across eight episodes. The show’s audience grew 276% in its first full week in release after premiering on April 3.

Key to the ongoing conversations about Latino representation in the U.S. entertainment industry is the need for the diversification of stories, which in turn would breed valuable specificity. Rather than expecting one production to speak strongly to every single subset of the vast Latino community, projects should reflect the unique microcosms and experiences that speak to groups such as Cuban Americans in Florida, Mexican Americans in Los Angeles, or Dominican Americans in New York City.
Enter the multi-hyphenate Rudy Mancuso, whose charmingly inventive and loosely autobiographical feature directorial debut “Música” highlights the Brazilian American community of New Jersey’s Ironbound neighborhood. In addition to starring in the film as a fictionalized version of his younger self, the talented Mancuso — who started out making videos on the now-defunct app Vine before moving on to YouTube and live shows — co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Lagana and, fittingly, also created the integral music.

Rudy Mancuso will tell you that making Música, out now on Prime Video, is one of the “most rewarding experiences” he’s ever had. Mancuso is the semi-autobiographical film’s director, co-writer, composer, and choreographer. He plays a version of himself who is trying to bring harmony to his life while dealing with his family, his complicated love life, synesthesia, and the uncertainty of his future. Mancuso reveals to TV Insider that he knew he wanted to depict his “relationship with sound and music onscreen” from a young age, and he’s never been “more ready” to tell his story. He also found love on set with co-star Camila Mendes. The Riverdale alum plays Isabella, one of Rudy’s love interests. Música is the origin of their own love story. Below, Mancuso opens up about the moment when the line between the film and real life “started to blur,” the...

Before Rudy Mancuso wrote, directed, starred in and composed the music for his stylish debut feature, Música, he made exuberant short-form videos for Vine (R.I.P). In those six-second clips, many of which are compiled on YouTube, the artist experiments with slapstick comedy, an energetic editing style and bouncy compositions that channel how he sees the world. Mancuso has synesthesia, a perceptual condition in which any one kind of sensory stimulation can spark spontaneous reactions in another. Where others see a square, Mancuso might also hear a B note; the letter A will always be terracotta to him, and so on.
In Música, the artist mines his personal life and singular experience of the world to craft a charming coming-of-age story. The film, which premiered at SXSW and is streaming on Prime Video, follows Rudy (Mancuso) six weeks before his college graduation, when the young Newark native must confront...

It’s a drizzly Mondy morning in New York, and the hotel restaurant I’m sitting in is filled with the sounds of prep work for the day. Rudy Mancuso brings his unique style of music to a coming-of-age romantic comedy in Prime Video’s Música. Mancuso has done something wonderful in his directorial debut but it is not perfect. Following all the cliched beats of any rom-coms, Música distinguishes itself from other rom-coms because of its style of storytelling but it falls short when it comes to the real romance of it all.
Based on his own experiences, Mancuso co-wrote the film with Dan Lagana and it follows the story of a young man suffering from synesthesia, which turns all the sounds around him into music. With an uncertain future, an overbearing mother, and an interest in puppetry, Rudy gets stuck in a love triangle with his long-time girlfriend, who doesn’t understand him, and a girl he recently met, who supports his dreams.

On the surface, “Música” feels like a very standard story about a talented guy who finds himself caught between two girls he likes, and — rather than be honest with them — starts dating both at the same time. Hilarity ensues. Thankfully, much like the fictional Rudy he plays here, the real Rudy Mancuso is more than meets the eye. His feature directorial debut is a smart and charming coming-of-age love story that is also a musical and such a good cinematic portrayal of synesthesia that it’ll make you forget all about the other, misbegotten attempts to thread the same needle (does anyone remember “August Rush”?).
We are in the era of social media movie directors, but the days of “Fred: The Movie” are thankfully gone. Between Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade,” and Danny and Michael Philippou’s “Talk to Me,” YouTube is starting to seem like a viable incubator for worthwhile film directors.

“What movie won?” Rick Hilton asked as he and wife Kathy Hilton assumed position at the end of a glamorous queue to get into Vanity Fair’s 30th anniversary Oscar party in Beverly Hills on Sunday after 10 p.m. They asked their son, Kathy says, but no clue. Fortunately, a gentleman standing directly in front of the couple had the answer. “It was Oppenheimer,” he said, not mentioning the awkwardness of Al Pacino’s best picture reveal. Some details can be saved for Monday morning. Plus, there are more rapid-fire questions to field.
What movie is that? Is it based on a true story? Who was the emcee?
“Oh, Jimmy Kimmel. I like him,” Rick said, smiling, in a totally relatable moment because who doesn’t love Jimmy Kimmel?...

There comes a time in every heterosexual woman or queer man’s life where we have to wonder: What is it about men that is at once so despicable and so alluring?
There are statistically more male serial killers, more male sociopaths, and — let’s be real — more male assholes than there are female counterparts. That’s just scientific fact. Sure, you can click on the hyperlinks, but do you really need to read a Psychology Today post between looking at this review and scrolling through the dating apps?
But the foundation of heteronormative rom-coms goes as follows: Girl meets boy, girl falls for boy, girl changes herself slightly for boy, and boy proposes. The end, happily ever after, everyone is great and good. Yeah, if you’re currently dating (or have been on dates at all in the 21st century), you know that’s not how it works, especially when situationships,...

"She's different, she's beautiful, she's smart, she's funny." Prime Video has revealed the first official trailer for a film titled Música, marking the feature directorial debut of actor / filmmaker Rudy Mancuso. This will be premiering at the upcoming 2024 SXSW Film Festival in March, with a theatrical unveiling, before it launches on streaming on Prime Video in early April for everyone else. Mancuso was raised in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, the son of an Italian-American father and a Brazilian mother. He lived in Rio de Janeiro for a while and speaks Portuguese fluently, and also really does have synesthesia. The digital creator makes his big screen debut writing, directing, and starring in “Música,” which charts his own coming-of-age story as an artist with synesthesia. Mancuso hears music everywhere, especially when he locks eyes with Isabella (Mendes) while at a New Jersey diner. Set in Newark, “Música” follows Mancuso’s balance of love, family, and his Brazilian culture.
The film will premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 13. Mancuso wrote and directed the feature, with Dan Lagana co-writing. “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star J.B. Smoove, Francesca Reale, and Maria Mancuso also round out the cast.

Though Charles Melton appears to be extremely attractive, there is more to him than meets the eye. Last year, he co-starred with Julianne Moore & Natalie Portman in Todd Haynes’ drama May December, which launched the awards campaign for his acclaimed performance.
Since then, the Riverdale star has been nominated and even won numerous awards. He received a Gotham Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance and was given a nomination for the Golden Globe & Critics Choice Awards. From his breakthrough performance in the hit TV series Riverdale to his role in May December, it would not be false to say that he is rapidly establishing himself as a gifted actor to watch.

[Editor’s note: This article includes some light spoilers for Prime Video’s “Upgraded.”]
If there’s one thing that’s true about art and life: Nothing is ever really free. This goes double for art that shows up in film and TV. Each piece either needs to be created purposefully for a project by the art team or licensed from the artist or estate that holds the digital/image reproduction rights to it — unless you want a tattoo artist suing you for copyright infringement for putting an actual Mike Tyson tattoo on Ed Helms’ face.
We take it for granted, but everything that we see on screen is intentional. All the art must either be created by a project’s art team or licensed, whether that be old photographs on a desk, posters on a bedroom wall, graffiti on the side of a building, or, in the case of Carlson Young’s new film, “Upgraded,” multiple galleries full of modern art. If a piece isn’t purpose-made,...

Riverdale stars Camila Mendes, Lili Reinhart and Madelaine Petsch (Picture Credit: Instagram)
It has been six months since Riverdale ended. The CW supernatural teenage show had quite a long run of seven seasons. From romance to murder mystery to horror elements, the series had everything. Based on Archie Comics, the show stars Lili Reinhart, Cole Sprouse, Camila Mendes, Kj Apa, Madelaine Petsch, Vanessa Morgan, Casey Cott and others.
Riverdale’s storyline always perplexed the audience. Sometimes, it made sense, and most of the time, none of it made sense. However, the show gave us unique talents and solid friendships. Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes and Madelaine Petsch are one such trio who became good friends on the sets. The ladies often shared beautiful pictures and cool TikTok videos.
So, has anything changed ever since the show ended? Did their friendship change, and is the cast still connected via group chat? Camila has answered these burning questions.

For most of her career, Camila Mendes has been known as Veronica Lodge. She portrayed the rich, confident high schooler on The CW’s “Riverdale” for six years, appearing in 136 of the 137 episodes before the series wrapped up last year. And now, she’s ready to put that behind her in order to show the world what else she can do.
“I’m sure I will be typecast — I think people are gonna offer me roles based off things that they’ve already seen me do. So it only’s natural that’s what would happen,” she tells Variety.
Which is part of the reason Mendes is attracted to projects she can also produce, and she’s both the star and an executive producer of “Upgraded,” a new romantic comedy that dropped on Amazon Prime Video’s on Feb. 9. In it, Mendes plays Ana, a young art intern who meets...

Telling a little white lie to a cute seatmate on a plane is harmless… right? The Riverdale alum finally graduates out of high school roles, aged 29, with a frothy Valentine’s offering that adds a meet-cute to a Devil Wears Prada tale
I’ll admit that my first thought upon seeing Upgraded, a new Amazon Prime romcom, was something close to excitement – finally, a leading role for Camila Mendes that’s not in high school. At 29, the Riverdale alum, so game for whatever batshit curveball that show threw her and so sharp in Netflix’s romp Do Revenge, is a veteran of commanding the screen as a bitchy, beautiful, secretly vulnerable teen queen. Upgraded, from actor turned director Carlson Young, offers Mendes the much-deserved chance to act her age – or, at least, a scrappy third-tier assistant old enough to have a master’s degree in art history, who gets in way over her head and also charms everyone around her.

The treasure trove of young talent that emerged from The CW’s “Riverdale” is truly astonishing, and Camila Mendes is no exception. Her star power as both an actress in and executive producer of the immediately classic rom-com “Upgraded” takes the New York University alum to new heights.
While Mendes’ former “Riverdale” costars are flying high in their respective lanes, with Cole Sprouse stealing scenes even as a mute zombie in the Diablo Cody-penned “Lisa Frankenstein” to Charles Melton’s haunting, award-winning (yet Oscar-snubbed) performance in “May December,” Mendes has proven her own visionary chops in recent years. The star had a standout role in frothy high school dark comedy “Do Revenge” opposite Maya Hawke, and now holds her own alongside iconic actress Marisa Tomei in “Upgraded.”
Mendes’ likability (and relatability) almost mirrors Amanda Bynes’ Hollywood reign during the “She’s the Man” and “Sydney White” days. “Upgraded” is essentially “What a Girl Wants...

It’s quite the feat to craft a satisfying, clever romantic comedy in this cynical day and age, given almost every meet-cute, situational shenanigan and grand gesture has already been put to celluloid. However, “Upgraded,” which initially appears to be a stereotypical rags-to-riches tale centered on a desperate gal’s life drastically improving after telling a white lie to a cute guy, keeps these expected elements fresh and vibrant. Director Carlson Young and screenwriters Christine Lenig, Justin Matthews and Luke Spencer Roberts ground sharp, soaring sentiments in a reachable reality, innovatively remixing the genre’s familiar formulas to create their own meaningful and rather endearing movie.

After becoming a household name with her popular role in ‘Riverdale’, actress Camila Mendes is all set to bowl fans over with her much-loved swoony charm. Playing Ana Santos, a broke but ambitious art curator intern from New York, Mendes will soon be seen in the upcoming Amazon Original movie ‘Upgraded’.
