Kendrick Lamar delivered a surprise commencement speech at the 2024 graduation ceremony for Compton College, marking his first public appearance since his high-profile feud with Drake.
Taking the stage during the midpoint of the ceremony, much to the surprise of the class of 2024, Lamar expressed pride for his city, and hope for the next generation. “I still believe in Compton,” he said. “Compton has always been the future for me. I think we breed some of the most incredible individuals, creators, intellectuals, talent. We had it since day one… I traveled the world, it’s no place like this one right here… I still believe in everything that we’re doing. Brick by brick.”
Continuing, Lamar turned his attention to the future. “It’s time that we change the narratives,” he said. “Some people tell us, ‘This generation don’t have what it takes, Gen Z.’ They try to pull us...

When it comes to seeing your favorite bands and artists live this year, there’s a good chance they’re playing at a music festival in a city near you. Aside from well-known events like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, there’s no shortage of other multi-day fests around the country, from BottleRock in Napa, to a relatively new fest in Iowa with some of the biggest acts in music.

It has been over half a decade since The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part opened to critical acclaim, but failed to make it big at the box office, leading to WB selling the IP to Universal. But at last, a new entry in the franchise is finally coming our way, starring some of the biggest names in the realm of music, including the likes of Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, and Kendrick Lamar.
Announced back in January, the upcoming Lego Pharrell Williams biopic’s trailer was finally unveiled, and Lamar’s first look from the film has sent fans into a frenzy.

Pharrell Williams has always done things differently in his music and his fashion, so why would his movie be different?
The singer-producer-designer is doing a biopic about his life. Focus Features just released the trailer for it. But it’s not your average musician biopic of the kind “Walk Hard” parodied. No, Williams is telling his life story through Legos. The movie is called “Piece by Piece,” but a more descriptive title would be “The Lego Pharrell Movie.”
The film follows Williams’ artistic journey, from growing up in Virginia Beach to the peak of the music industry, but tells it in an unconventional way, with impressionistic animation that combines psychedelia and Legos. The film is directed by Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy-winning documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville in his feature debut.
Williams and Neville hope the film resonates not just with fans of Williams’ music, but anyone seeking inspiration. “We wanted it...

It’s one of the most unexpected and unusual ideas for a film in recent memory – but since Pharrell Williams has rarely played by conventional rules, it somehow makes sense. The music legend – producer, rapper, frontman of N.E.R.D, beatmaker to Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Gwen Stefani and plenty more – is telling his story in a biopic titled Piece By Piece. And that biopic happens to come in animated Lego form. Yes it’s your, um, typical animated Lego Pharrell Williams biopic. Watch the trailer here:
Let’s lay any cynicism aside for a minute: this could be a fascinating and unique film, a distinctly Pharrellian way to tell the story of a musical icon who made it his signature to pick apart melodic bricks and rebuild them in his own image. And amid a deluge of straight-up play-the-hits music movies, it’s refreshing to see a different...

It’s been a while since we’ve received a (proper) Lego movie, but as things stand now, the famous blocks are coming back to the big screen but in the most unexpected way possible. Namely, the upcoming biopic Piece by Piece, which will tell the story of Pharrell Williams, is going to be the next Lego film, as the biopic is going to be an animated one made in the style of previous Lego films. This, honestly, surprised us (we have no clue who’d rush to the cinema to see it), but we’re not the ones to judge before seeing the project, so we’ll bring our final verdict later this year, when the movie comes out.
But, if you wanted a preview of that to expect from the film, we can confirm that the first teaser trailer has just been released, and we are going to...

When a publisher suggested that Questlove write a book about the history of hip-hop, he was reticent at first. Not because of any fear of writing — the Roots drummer is an accomplished author, with a back catalog that includes an acclaimed 2013 memoir, along with volumes like 2021’s Music Is History. The problem? He was unsure of where he fits into the landscape of hip-hop in his mid-fifties.

"I firmly believe that everybody has talent, beauty, and potential." Focus Features has unveiled the first official trailer for Piece by Piece, a Lego version of the story of musician Pharrell Williams. This is one of the first Lego movies that is not related to another franchise (like Star Wars or Jurassic Park) or its own creation, instead it's all about Pharrell, but told using the same animated Lego style as the other movies. Described as a "one-of-a-kind cinematic experience about one of music's most innovative minds." Yeah this is cool. With appearances by Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, and Snoop Dogg. Follow this autobiographical movie where Pharrell Williams shows his imaginative and creative process using Lego, as he constructs models representing his artistic development. Each build reflects a different creative milestone. It's directed by doc mastermind Morgan Neville, and will hit theaters in October this year.

Pharrell Williams is revisiting the building blocks of his life — literally.
Williams’ biography is captured by Lego animation for feature film “Piece by Piece,” directed by Academy Award winner Morgan Neville, who also gets Lego-fied for the meta film. As do Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, and Snoop Dogg.
Billed as an “unparalleled motion picture experience,” the animated biopic stars Williams as a Lego version of himself as he tells his own life story. Grammy-winning and Academy Award-nominated musician Williams announced the project on Instagram in January 2024, captioning, “Who would’ve thought that playing with Legos as a kid would evolve into a movie about my life. It’s proof that anyone else can do it too… #PieceByPiece.”
“Piece by Piece” has been in the works since early 2019, when Williams reached out to Neville with the concept.

The trailer for Focus Features’ upcoming movie “Piece by Piece” begins with a Lego-fied Pharrell Williams sitting down for an interview about his life.
“You know what what would be cool is if we told my story with Lego pieces,” Lego Pharrell tells the similarly-bricked director Morgan Neville (the Oscar-winning documentarian behind “20 Feet From Stardom”), who chuckles politely and asks, “Seriously?” Pharrell replies: “Just be open.”
The colorfully and creatively reimagined scene is pretty close to how the conversation played out nearly five years ago, Neville says, as he and Williams sign on to a Zoom chat to discuss how this innovative project came together.
“That’s how the conversation went down in my head,” he tells Variety. “I didn’t know what it was going to be, but it was going to be interesting and I was completely in.”
And the result is unlike anything he’s ever done — or seen — before.

Before Drake was feuding with Kendrick Lamar, he was embroiled in a rap beef with rapper/actor Common. While Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s beef may go down in history books as the most significant rap beef of all time, his feud with Common in the early 2010s did generate a few headlines.
In 2011 and 2012, Common and Drake took jabs at each other. In a recent Drink Champs podcast, Common opened up about the origins of his feud. In the podcast, Common explained that he was pushed to drop a diss track after Drake began taking jabs at him.
He said, “I felt like Drake was sending me a couple of shots, subliminal. I don’t know what motivated him to send me some shots, but I think what for sure had me was if I’m just being real, like, we mess...

Drake has contributed a verse to “Wah Gwan Delilah,” a new Toronto-themed remix of “Hey There Delilah” by rapper Snowd4y.
Arriving on the tails of Drake’s highly-publicized rap feud with Kendrick Lamar, his “Wah Gwan Delilah” verse sees him cheekily re-imagine the lyrics of the Plain White T’s classic with Toronto lingo and a healthy layer of auto-tune, though in all honesty, the feature sounds like it could really go either way on being AI or not.
For his part, Snowd4y — who provides most of the vocals for the remix — has been teasing Drake’s involvement on social media for weeks, sharing videos of him revealing the feature to friends. Stream the song below.

Rock music is far from dead. Last year’s Grammy nominations proved that, with some of the leading acts in music being present in the rock categories. Alongside legends like The Rolling Stones and Metallica, the field was graced by the presence of Gen-z’s favorite artists, such as Boygenius, Arctic Monkeys and Olivia Rodrigo. So to find great rock music these days, you just have to pay attention. We are certainly paying attention this year, with a slew of buzzy releases already in the conversation to take home the gold come Grammy time.
One of the biggest stories in rock this season is the return of The Beatles with the single “Now and Then.” It’s unclear if the song will be competing in pop or in rock, but either way it’s for sure getting them a nomination. A music video made to their hit song “I’m...

How do we know what music is actually good? Many fans look to critics. Sure, some might label music journalism as irrelevant in assigning value to art, but the reality is, critics do at least partly contribute to the consensus on the quality of music. That’s why, whether it is during a civilized conversation or the most rabid Twitter stan war, an album’s Metacritic score typically comes up. So award show voters must take those top albums more into consideration than others, right? To be a big awards player, doesn’t your album need to be somewhat acclaimed?
Let’s take a look at the past three Grammy ceremonies as examples. Since these are ceremonies with no nomination review committees involved, the results are a more accurate, unfiltered reflection of what voters think. According to Metacritic, anything below 81 is not “universally acclaimed,” so that’s how I’ll sort it out.

A crowded bar, copious drinking, a strummed guitar and a chorus that will make even abstainers want to shout along: Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has it all, which explains why it’s vying for summer-mainstay status with Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” and Post Malone and Morgan Wallen’s “I Had Some Help,” It’s easy to categorize those songs, but what exactly is “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”? Hip hop with country flavor? Country with rap trimmings? Or some ingenious melding of the...

Drake has always been a magnet for attention. His strange journey has taken him from teen fame on Degrassi to blockbuster rap stardom. In 2024, his beef with Kendrick Lamar has blown up into one of the all-time biggest hip-hop beefs. They went from zero to 100 real quick, sending deadly insults and accusations back and forth. Yet he’s also the Drake the pop icon, the certified loverboy who sings emo ballads like the 2015 classic “Hotline Bling.”

A year after hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, and only a few weeks after Kendrick Lamar’s feud with Drake culminated in a chart-topping track where he calls Drake a “colonizer,” the hottest topic on the rap internet right now is a white kid from St. Louis rapping over vintage-sounding Atlanta rap beats. Ian, whose debut mixtape, Valedictorian, caps off a run of viral hits that have quickly caught the attention and ire of rap fans online, leans heavily into the dissonance between his look and his sound. In the video...

It was the feud heard round the world — still is, really. Kendrick Lamar and Drake have traded diss tracks back and forth, and they went beyond petty beefs. Drake accused Lamar of domestic abuse, while Lamar called Drake a “certified pedophile.” In the end Lamar was considered the winner of the war according to Andre Gee of Rolling Stone and Joseph Patterson of Complex UK and Trench Magazine, among others, and their relative commercial performances bear that out, with Lamar’s “Not Like Us” topping the Billboard Hot 100. But could Grammy darling Lamar win more Grammys for so directly calling out another Grammy winner?

Denzel Washington is easily one of the most admired and respected influences in the entertainment industry, with a presence that never ceases to catch the attention of the entire room he walks in. And yet, he was very well humbled when he came in the presence of the late legendary actor best known for playing James Bond: Sean Connery.

Interestingly enough, this happened at the Oscars, and the way Washington realized — even before the announcement of the results — that he had truly been defeated by the now-deceased actor on the biggest stage in Hollywood was through one simple act that was, perhaps, common for an actor as tremendously acclaimed as Connery: A 3-minute standing ovation!

Vince Staples has released his new album, Dark Times, via Def Jam Recordings.
Dark Times contains 13 tracks and was recorded over seven months in North Hollywood. In an Instagram post, Staples revealed the album is his final release on Def Jam.
“Eleven years ago, a young, uncertain version of myself was given an opportunity with Def Jam Recordings,” he wrote. “I released my first project under their banner, Shyne Coldchain Vol 2, a year later. I was unsure of what to expect from the world of music but deeply aware of what I needed: a change in my surroundings and a clear understanding of self. Ten years and seven projects later, I’ve found that clarity.”
In a separate statement about the album cover, which features a faintly seen noose, Staples explained, “I’m Black, and that’s what we’re evading. We all have our things that could kill us.

Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list today named its top 10 albums of all-time, with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill crowned No. 1.
“This is my award,” Hill said to Apple Music, “but it’s a rich, deep narrative, and involves so many people, and so much sacrifice, and so much time, and so much collective love.”
Last year was the album’s 25th anniversary, and its success was overwhelming upon release. It won five Grammys, three American Music Awards, and a Billboard, Soul Train and MTV Video Music Award while selling 30 million copies since its bow.
But instead of capitalizing on it, Hill became one of music’s biggest enigmas. Her output diminished after an MTV Unplugged follow-up acoustic album, reverting to sporadic singles and rare appearances.

When it comes to the music industry, there is always some drama going on. Be it subtle hints hidden in lyrics or outright diss tracks, those who follow the personal lives of their favorite musicians are bound to be entertained. While it is rare for an artist to actually speak ill of someone by name, it does happen every now and then.

Over the past week or so, Apple Music has slowly unveiled the titles included in its list of the “100 best albums.” Today, the top 10 albums were revealed, with Miss Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill claiming the No. 1 spot. Rounding out the top five are Michael Jackson’s Thriller; The Beatles’ Abbey Road; Prince’s Purple Rain; and Frank Ocean’s Blonde.
The top 10 also includes Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life; Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (Deluxe Version); Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black; Nirvana’s Nevermind; and Beyoncé’s Lemonade.
In all honestly, it’s a pretty safe top 10, especially considering the drama that unfolded when Apple unveiled picks 11-20 and slotted Adele’s 21 at No. 15 and Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) at No. 18 — ahead of albums like Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds,...

One of the biggest and most sensational developments in modern hip-hop came in the form of the recent Kendrick Lamar-Drake feud. The two rap giants have moved ahead in a tussle, with several diss tracks being fired from both sides. Additionally, it has also involved other rappers such as the likes of Ye, Metro Boomin, and The Weeknd, calling them to choose their team. Now, in an interesting development, the latest pair to get involved in this mix is the father-son duo of Tom Hanks and Chet Hanks.

The duo’s conversation made its way to social media and has several fans rolling in hysteria and amazement. A detailed explanation from the son to the acclaimed actor, who still appeared clueless, had the Internet in splits. Regardless, the summary still highlighted the intensity of the feud and its knocking on the Hanks’ doors.

Like many other folks approaching 70, Tom Hanks found himself out of the loop when the beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake dominated headlines during the first week of May. So, he reached out to his son and hip-hop enthusiast, Chet Hanks, for an explanation and got a far longer response than he expected — so much so that he apparently didn’t bother reading the reply.
Chet posted the exchange in his Instagram Stories today (May 20th), which began with his father saying, “Big Main, can you explain the Drake/Kendrick Lamar feud to me?”
In response, Chet broke down how Drake and J. Cole had long claimed they were among the “Big 3” of hip-hop alongside Kendrick Lamar, which prompted Kendrick to come after them on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That.”

The recent assault on Steve Buscemi on the streets of New York City spawned a skit for SNL that featured Jake Gyllenhaal as an NYPD sergeant urging bad guys to “stop punching character actors in the face.”
Speaking at a press conference for reporters, Gyllenhaal called character actors “the life blood of the entertainment industry” and expressed concern about the assaults on these “national treasures.” He said the attack on Buscemi followed similar ones on Rick Moranis and the “shocking versatile Michael Stuhlbarg.”
He went on to define character actors as “actors who faces you can remember but names you cannot,” including anyone “who has ever been on the TV show Boardwalk Empire, you have a face that makes casting directors go ‘oh interesting,'” and “your IMDb page has over 100 entries, but all your characters just have a first name.”

We’re about due for a new live-action Scooby-Doo movie, and Jake Gyllenhaal and Sabrina Carpenter are happy to hop into the Mystery Machine.
On this week’s SNL, host Gyllenhaal and musical guest Carpenter co-starred in a Scooby-Doo video short as Fred and Daphne, with Mikey Day as Shaggy and Sarah Sherman as Velma, along with a CGI Scooby. The gang searched a spooky haunted house for “the Shadow Phantom,” capturing the villain after Scooby knocked a suit of armor onto him. In typical Scooby fashion, Fred tore off the Phantom’s mask to reveal (gasp!) Old Man Franklin.

Forget the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine. Bill Maher spent the first segment of Friday’s Real Time asking about a cultural battle – the feud between rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
To explain the war of words, Maher brought in Michael Eric Dyson, a professor at Vanderbilt University and author of the book Unequal: A Story of America.
Dyson blamed the feud on a personality clash. “Kendrick Lamar didn’t like the fact that Drake was who he was,” a resentment dating back years. It kept brewing until it “blew up in one particular song,” which was Like That, a 2024 collaboration by Future, Metro Boomin, and Lamar.
Dyson said verbal battles are not unusual in the Black community. He pointed out that Drake, a Canadian, has been accused of being a “culture vulture” who is not socially conscious. “So his Blackness was put into question,” Dyson said.
