“When I was just a little girl I asked my mother, what will I be? Will I be pretty? Will I be rich? Here’s what she said to me: Qué será, será. Whatever will be, will be”
The opening of Michael Lehmann’s Heathers begins with a dreamy cover of a familiar song. Angelic voices ask a mother to predict the future only to be met with an infuriating response: “whatever will be, will be.” Her answer is most likely intended to present a life of limitless possibility, but as the introduction to a film devoid of competent parents, it feels like a noncommittal platitude. Heathers is filled with teenagers looking for guidance only to be let down by one adult after another. Gen Xers and elder millennials may have glamorized the outlandish fashion and creative slang while drooling over a smoking hot killer couple, but the violent film now packs an ominous punch.

‘Mother of the Bride’ Review: Brooke Shields Says I Do to Netflix’s Aggressively Inoffensive Rom-Com
After “Ticket to Paradise” and “Shotgun Wedding” showed us the different ways in which calamity ensues when planning weddings abroad, Netflix releases “Mother of the Bride,” which combines the essential elements of both those recent romantic comedies into one passable package. The far-off setting emphasizes the lavish and luxe, though the narrative is cheaply woven and fairly threadbare. While “Mean Girls” director Mark Waters’ latest fails to add anything unique to the conversation, it does scrounge up a modest amount of heart when it comes to its saccharine sweet message of never giving up on happily ever after.
Mere seconds after her extravagant proposal, Emma (Miranda Cosgrove) begins fretting to her fiancé Rj (Sean Teale) about how to frame their engagement to her judgmental widowed mom Dr. Lana Winslow (Brooke Shields), who doesn’t even know her only child has a steady beau. Cue zany, plucky score. Mom’s been busy saving the world,...

Photo credit: “Shutterstock.AI” Remember how crazy it is that the iconic movie Mean Girls is practically an adult now? Two decades! Tina Fey’s wickedly funny writing (and her Ms. Norbury role!) is still pure gold. And that cast! Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried – they were all pitch-perfect, and the film sent Lohan soaring. Cady Heron (Lohan) tries to infiltrate the ultra-popular Plastics, but her crush on Regina George’s ex sets off the classic high school drama we all know too well. Oh, the cringe!” So, why does Mean Girls still hit home after all this time? Probably because those social groups and sneaky power plays just keep on happening. Even with the Broadway musical (and the less-awesome movie-of-the-musical), the story just keeps on proving how timeless it is. As Lindsay Lohan said when the movie first blew up. Hollywood actress Rachel McAdams says she is “absolutely terrified” to make her Broadway debut but is hopeful that she will get to do more shows in the future.
The ‘Mean Girls’ star, 45, is now set to take on the title role in the new play ‘Mary Jane’ and said that she found the prospect of taking to ‘The Great White Way’ to be “intimidating” to begin with.
“(I’m) terrified, absolutely terrified. I was intimidated to take it on, so there was always something hold me back a little bit,” she said while speaking on ‘The Broadway Show with Tamsen Fadal’.
In the play, McAadams, who has worked in iconic films such as ‘The Notebook’, ‘The Hot Chick’ and ‘About Time’, among many others, plays a singer mother with an ailing son living in Jackson Heights and is hopeful that she will get to star in another Broadway show at some point in her career.

Countless actresses auditioned for Mean Girls, and Ashley Tisdale was one of them.
The High School Musical breakout stopped by Watch What Happens Live! on Monday, where she was asked by a fan if it was true she auditioned for the role of Karen Smith in the hit 2004 film.
“Gosh, it was so long ago,” Tisdale said. “I just remember screen-testing, and it was me and Blake Lively and someone else. But yeah, I screen-tested. That was like, eons ago, obviously.”
Amanda Seyfried eventually went on to portray Karen, and the film marked the Emmy-winning actress’ biggest role at the time. Shortly after, Tisdale landed The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and then High School Musical. Lively starred in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants before landing the lead role in Gossip Girl.
During her appearance on the late night show, Tisdale also recounted her audition for Mean Girls.

The original Mean Girls movie is confirmed for a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release in the UK: more on it here.
Heading to over $100m at the global box office, the 2024 take on Mean Girls – the film that’s a musical that wasn’t promoted as such – has been a solid hit for Paramount Pictures. Not bad at all for a film that was originally intended for Paramount+, and got upgraded to a theatrical release.
Still, it’s the original that remains the standout, the 2004 film starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Tina Fey. Mark Waters directed the movie, and it’s – if you’ve not had the pleasure – one of the standout teen movies of its particular decade.

Get in losers, we’re going to Paramount+ to watch “Mean Girls” again. The 2024 movie musical will stream on Paramount+ beginning March 5, following its January theatrical release.
An adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the 2004 film, Tina Fey’s latest rendition of the high school comedy surpassed $100 million at the global box office after six weeks of release. It held the top spot at the domestic box office for three consecutive weeks following its Jan. 12 release. “Mean Girls” was originally slated to debut directly on Paramount+, however executives decided on a theatrical release after enthusiastic test screenings.
Taking on the role Lindsay Lohan originated, Angourie Rice stars as Cady Heron, who is forced to navigate high school politics for the first time after moving from Africa to the suburbs of Illinois. She soon encounters and infiltrates the Plastics, the most popular clique in school ruled by queen bee Regina George.

2004's "Mean Girls" has become a seminal classic of teen girl cinema, with Rachel McAdams' Regina George, Lacey Chabert's Gretchen Weiners, Amanda Seyfried's Karen Smith, and Lindsay Lohan's Cady Heron just as culturally important (and quotable) as say, Matthew Broderick in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." A time capsule of early aughts fashion and sensibilities, "Mean Girls" is a cultural touchstone and arguably the last time a teen movie crossed over into mainstream popularity without being a part of a massive franchise like "Twilight" or "The Hunger Games" (or a slasher film). Simply put, "Mean Girls" is now woven into the fabric of American pop culture.
The film helped solidify Lohan's place as one of Hollywood's "it girls," and her off-set antics became just as talked about as whatever film she had out in theaters. So much so, that even the insulting nickname "fire crotch" for her made...

Get in, loser; we’re doing the recap and ending breakdown of the new Mean Girls. The original Mean Girls wasn’t simply a cult classic; it was an instant feminist superhit comedy that had all of us young girls in a chokehold. 20 years later, we get to see an “upgraded” version of the film, which is a musical adaptation of the film and also a direct adaptation of the Mean Girls Broadway musical. As a fan of musicals and Mean Girls, I presumed this film would be right up my alley, but alas, none of the music sticks the landing, and as for the best parts, they were all already in the original, so I am left quite disappointed. I suppose one thing remains the same: Regina George is still an icon, and both actresses who play the woman do the character justice in their own way. I suppose...

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Rachel Reeves lists the five baddest teen queens of 1989.
Bridging the gap between the ’80s and ’90s, 1989 was an interesting year for horror. With a robust roster of strong slasher icons to lean on, innovative sub-genres and a thriving physical media industry, 1989 desperately clung to the last gasp of the ’80s while tentatively experimenting with what the ’90s might bring. Along with a wealth of later-entry franchise sequels, this indecisive decade straddling also resulted in some eclectic representations of all-to-familiar tropes, including the “bad girl.”

If you ask anyone over the age of 25, they'll probably tell you that there's no dollar amount in the world that could ever make them want to go back to high school, and for good reason — high school can be hell. Teen films have been a popular and profitable subgenre for decades, but few films have become a cultural phenomenon quite like "Mean Girls." The film centers on teenager Cady Heron who is starting public school for the first time as a high school junior, having been spared from the cruel cliques or popularity warfare on campus. After a few less-than-stellar days, she catches the eye of Queen Bee Regina George, the leader of a popular clique known as The Plastics who rule North Shore High School with perfectly manicured nails and hair insured for $10,000 (or full of secrets).

Actress Tina Fey has revealed that she struggled with boys at school because she was a “nerd”. The ‘Mean Girls’ creator, who has brought the musical adaptation of the 2004 teen comedy blockbuster to the big screen this year, has admitted she didn’t have much luck finding a boyfriend as a kid.
She said: “I was a total nerd. A theatre nerd. I was all big hair and turtle-neck sweaters. I had no luck with boys whatsoever but I was a pretty good student,” reports Female First UK.
The 53-year-old former ‘SNL’ writer and cast member also confessed she could be a “mean girl” like Regina George at school and that she faced her fair share of bullies.
She told Australia’s Who magazine: “Yeah, there were real ‘Mean Girls’ in my life back in my high school days, for sure. In hindsight, I was maybe a ‘Mean Girl’ to some degree for a while.

Busy Philipps plays Mrs. George in Mean Girls from Paramount Pictures. Photo: Jojo Whilden/Paramount © 2023 Paramount Pictures. When Tina Fey realized she wasn’t going to be able to get Amy Poehler to reprise her role as Regina George’s mother in the new Mean Girls movie, she got busy trying to cast the role. And then, she got Busy — Busy Phillips, that is. Fey and Phillips are good friends, so Fey thought she would be a good fit, but she told us she still sought out Poehler’s feedback on the choice. (Click on the media bar below to hear Busy Phillips) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Tina_Fey_Casting_Busy_-Philipps_mean_girls_.mp3 Mean Girls is now playing in theaters.

For Bravo fans, 2024 didn’t begin until the bracing Jan. 2 season finale of “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,” which shocked us all into the new year, and made us remember we’re alive.
In the episode, Heather Gay learns that freshman cast member Monica Garcia is, in fact, behind an anonymous troll account — called Reality Von Tease — that’s tormented her and the rest of the cast since March 2021. Gay gets confirmation about Garcia’s involvement during a cast trip in Bermuda, on the final day of filming the show’s fourth season — a twist that was promised in the opening moments of the Season 4 premiere. In a flashforward in the premiere’s cold open, Gay got a mysterious phone call, during which producers scrambled into her room, and we heard her saying, “How could she do this to us? I’m freaking the fuck out!”

Saturday Night Live had a Regina Georges reunion as Rachel McAdams made a surprise appearance to introduce musical guest Renee Rapp this weekend.
Rapp, who played Regina George in the Mean Girls Broadway musical and its 2024 film adaptation, was introduced by McAdams, who played the character in the original 2004 film.
Rapp then sang “Not My Fault” from the movie’s soundtrack. The surprises didn’t stop there, as Megan Thee Stallion jumped out of a cake to perform her verse.
Megan said she was the “black Regina George” in the verse.
The rapper later posted to social media a photo of herself, Rapp and McAdams doing the Spider-Man pointing meme.
“All the Regina’s in one room,” she captioned the post.
McAdams also appeared in a sketch with host Jacob Elordi, in which McAdams played an aspiring actress who says her name is Natalie Partman (not to be confused with...

Within hours of Mean Girls’ (2024) box office-topping release, bootleg video of Avantika’s song-and-dance number, “Sexy,” circulated social media to the praise of people far and wide.
Avantika plays a new take on Amanda Seyfried’s Karen in Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.’s film adaptation of Tina Fey’s Mean Girls Broadway musical, which was based on Fey and Mark Waters’ 2004 comedy classic. (The original Mean Girls was also based on Rosalind Wiseman’s book Queen Bees and Wannabes.) Like the Karen before her, Avantika’s version of the character is also endearingly slow on the uptake, often garnering the film’s best jokes and biggest laughs, but Fey, who returned as screenwriter, opted to not just play all the hits again, such as Karen’s “weather report.”

One Regina George passed the baton to another on the January 20 episode of NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Rachel McAdams, who played the queen-bee character in the 2004 movie Mean Girls, made a surprise appearance midway through Saturday night’s SNL to introduce a performance by singer Reneé Rapp, who took on the role of Regina for the new Mean Girls movie musical. And midway through Rapp’s performance of her Mean Girls song “Not My Fault,” an oversized cake prop on stage rotated to reveal Megan Thee Stallion, Rapp’s collaborator on the track. “It’s funny how the mean girl open all the doors / I been told y’all, I’m the Black Regina George,” Megan rapped during her verses of the track. Even better, all three Reginas recreated the Spider-Man Pointing at Spider-Man meme on SNL’s Studio 8H set. renee rapp, megan thee stallion and rachel mcadams...

Renee Rapp brought out two Mean Girls stars while performing on Saturday Night Live.
The 24-year-old actress and musician just brought Regina George to life in the musical version of Mean Girls. While performing her soundtrack contribution “Not My Fault,” she was introduced by original Regina actress Rachel McAdams and joined by duet partner Megan Thee Stallion.
The musical number featured several references to the iconic character. It also wasn’t the only Mean Girls crossover during the episode!

After introducing Renee, Rachel stuck around to appear in a skit where she played an aspiring actor with a strong resemblance to Rachel McAdams. During the skit, she joked about launching an OnlyFans account and being accused of being a deep fake.

Renée Rapp’s second Saturday Night Live musical performance of the night was full of surprises.
Audiences finally got to see the original Regina George anoint the new guard when Rachel McAdams introduced the singer, who played Regina on Broadway and reprised the role in Paramount’s new musical film.
Rapp sang “Not My Fault,” a song she collaborated with Megan Thee Stallion on for the film’s soundtrack. So, naturally, Meg had to make an appearance as well.
Rapp made her SNL musical guest debut this weekend. Megan Thee Stallion previously pulled double duty as both host and musical guest in October 2022.
McAdams, who has surprisingly never hosted SNL, also stuck around for a skit with host Jacob Elordi. In the skit, Adams played an aspiring actor who looks a lot like beloved actress Rachel McAdams. Elordi plays a very famous and pretentious actor imparting some words of wisdom on the group.

From one Regina George to another. Rachel McAdams, who led the hit movie “Mean Girls” in 2004 as the main bully, appeared on the Jan. 20 episode of “Saturday Night Live” to introduce musical guest Reneé Rapp. In the 2024 musical remake of the movie, Rapp portrays Regina.
The introduction, met with very loud applause, was followed by Rapp’s performance of “Not My Fault.” She wrote the song for the film and was joined on stage by Megan Thee Stallion. In the sketch following the performance, McAdams returned, portraying Natalie Partman, an actor who struggled to land any roles because she looked too much like Rachel McAdams.
McAdams (the real one) hasn’t been part of any of the recent “Mean Girls” events, making her surprise appearance all the more exciting. The original film also starred Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert, and the three recently reunited for a Walmart commercial.

“Saturday Night Live” is back for the first time in 2024. The Jan. 20 episode marked the first of the new year, with host Jacob Elordi and musical guest Reneé Rapp. Upon announcing the popular guests, NBC almost immediately began selling merch for the episode, anticipating just how popular the two are.
During Elordi’s opening monologue, he first mentioned “Saltburn,” the current buzzy movie that made headlines for its graphic sex scenes. “You might know me from ‘Saltburn.’ Not from seeing the film, just from seeing the TikToks,” he began, cutting to a scene when his co-star, Barry Keoghan, has sex with a grave. “I was the one in the grave. Jacob Elordi is bringing the “babygirl” energy to “Saturday Night Live” this week when he hosts NBC’s late night sketch comedy series for the first time. In his “SNL” promo video for the January 20 episode (watch above), Elordi seems confused when musical guest Reneé Rapp and cast member Bowen Yang initially refer to him as the term. Well, according to Urban Dictionary, “babygirl” is used for “grown fictional men who have the fandom in a loving chokehold” — so it’s a good thing!
The 26-year-old Australian actor hit it big with roles in “The Kissing Booth” and “Euphoria,” but it’s his appearance in the psycho-sexual “Saltburn” that put him on the awards radar with a pair of BAFTA nominations for Best Supporting Actor and for Rising Star. Elordi plays Felix Catton in the Emerald Fennell thriller, a spoiled college student who becomes the object of Oliver Quick’s (Barry Keoghan) obsession.

Bisexual panic is seeing Reneé Rapp and Jacob Elordi teasing their appearances on Saturday Night Live. Together.
On Thursday, SNL dropped its weekly teasers for this Saturday’s show, which will see Elordi as host and Rapp as musical guest. The video features the two stars alongside Bowen Yang cracking jokes about the Saltburn star being so babygirl.
“Reneé, you were so right, he is so babygirl,” joked Bowen Yang with a smirk. To which Rapp replied, “He’s so baby girl.”
“Me? I’m a baby girl?” asked Elordi.

We all know what happened after 2004’s Mean Girls – Regina became a lacrosse champ, Karen used her psychic boobs to present the morning weather announcements, Gretchen co-opted the Cool Asians, and Cady floated in a newly repaired girl world… while keeping a beady eye on any emerging Young Plastics set to reinstate the old hierarchy. Now there’s a film of the musical of the film.
But to the actors who played them in the original? Oscar nominations, pop careers, Hallmark Christmas movies, prestige streaming dramas, LGBT+ firsts, and much more.

While the 2024 Mean Girls movie made no adjustment to the original story, its new cast performances received positive reviews from most critics. The Mean Girls remake—this time with showtunes—was a big win for Paramount Pictures over a long holiday weekend in the States. A film originally pegged and budgeted for Paramount+ until someone realized folks still love the 2004 classic (shocker!), this economical redo of the Lindsay Lohan touchstone galloped to an impressive $33.2 million across its first four days. That matches practically all of its reported $36 million budget right out of the starting gate.
So the movie studio has reasons to pop champagne this week (and maybe send a few bottles over to Reneé Rapp for her diva turn as Gen Z’s very own Regina George). Nonetheless, even audiences who enjoyed what was a pretty down-the-middle reworking of a 20-year-old staple had to be a little peeved by how some fellow moviegoers reacted. Because, speaking purely anecdotally, it seemed like a lot of folks were put off by the whole...

As much as people complain about Hollywood putting out the same things year after year, the fact remains that name recognition gets people into theater seats. Moreover, remakes and reboots give filmmakers an opportunity to retell beloved stories from a different perspectives. In this age of high-budgets and higher-expectations, reboots and remakes are among the only types of movies that major studios like to make these days.
So whether you’re feeling cynical about this year’s offerings or optimistic about the second swings filmmakers are taking, here are the biggest reboots and remakes coming in 2024.
Mean Girls (January 12)
Although the promotional materials tried to do their best to conceal it, the 2024 Mean Girls doesn’t so much adapt the beloved 2004 comedy, but rather the Broadway musical that followed. Which means that, yes, viewers will hear more songs than “Jingle Bell Rock.” Singer Reneé Rapp reprises her stage performance as lead Plastic Regina George,...

Lindsay Lohan was fetch long before fetch was a thing. So, it should come as no surprise that Paramount paid the actor handsomely to cameo in the new “Mean Girls.”
Sources say Lohan, who became one of young Hollywood’s biggest stars after starring in the 2004 film of the same name, pulled down about $500,000 for a half a day of work in the latest incarnation, a musical that stars a new clique of Plastics led by Angourie Rice and Reneé Rapp. Paramount declined comment. A rep for Lohan declined a request for comment.
Lohan’s surprise entrance in the new film, written by Tina Fey, drew thunderous applause at the New York premiere on Jan. 8. Originally gracing our screens in 2004, the seminal Mean Girls movie emerged as a cultural touchstone, capturing the essence of the early 2000s through its endlessly quotable lines and resonant exploration of millennial teenage angst. Penned by the comedic genius Tina Fey (Saturday Night Live) and featuring the talents of a youthful Lindsay Lohan (The Parent Trap), the film artfully depicted high school as a tumultuous battleground defined by archetypal cliques.
Fast forward to 2018, and Tina Fey’s original screenplay underwent a theatrical transformation, landing on Broadway as the dazzling Mean Girls: The Musical. However, this triumphant debut was abruptly halted by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020, bringing the curtains down on its promising run.

Paramount’s “Mean Girls” musical earned a grool $33.2 million from 3,791 theaters over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, beating expectations.
Based on the Broadway adaptation of the 2004 comedy classic, “Mean Girls” was originally commissioned with plans to skip theaters and make a streaming debut directly on Paramount+, but executives opted for a theatrical release after test screenings. The musical film cost just $36 million.
The new “Mean Girls” stars Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, a role originated by Lindsay Lohan, who must navigate the social scene of her new high school ruled by the Plastics. Reneé Rapp reprises her Broadway role as queen bee Regina George, with a cast that also includes Bebe Wood, Avantika, Jaquel Spivey, Auli’i Cravalho and original stars Tim Meadows and producer-writer Tina Fey.
Paramount intentionally downplayed the song-and-dance numbers in promotional materials for the movie musical, which earned a “B” grade through research firm Cinema Score.

You’d be forgiven if you thought butter was a carb, just like it’s totally understandable if you didn’t know the new “Mean Girls” is a musical.
Paramount, which released the movie over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, chose not to explicitly market it as a song-and-dance spectacle, according to the studio’s president of global marketing and distribution Marc Weinstock.
“To start off saying musical, musical, musical, you have the potential to turn off audiences,” he says. “I want everyone to be equally excited.”
The PG-13 film triumphed in its box office debut with $33 million over the four-day weekend. But despite the cultural prominence of Tina Fey’s 2004 comedy, which propelled Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried to stardom, Weinstock’s job – selling the masses on (and clearing up any confusion about) “Mean Girls” – was trickier than trying to make fetch happen.

Drew Barrymore praised “Mean Girls” star Reneé Rapp on Friday’s episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show” for protecting her from an alleged stalker.
The cast of “Mean Girls” joined Barrymore on her eponymous talk show to discuss the movie musical. At one point, the daytime host pulled Rapp into a hug and thanked her for escorting her offstage when an alleged stalker approached them during a speaking event last year.
“You and I, by the way, you’re my protector,” Barrymore said. “Reneé and I had an incident recently where this guy came to attack me on a stage that I was [on] with Reneé, and she mama-beared out and protected me so well.”
Back in August 2023, Barrymore was interviewing Rapp at the 92nd Street Y in New York City about the actor-singer’s debut album “Snow Angel,” when an audience member interrupted the discussion and yelled, “Drew Barrymore!”

Back in August 2023, Barrymore was interviewing Rapp at the 92nd Street Y in New York City about the actor-singer’s debut album “Snow Angel,” when an audience member interrupted the discussion and yelled, “Drew Barrymore!”

There’s a new queen bee at the box office. Paramount’s “Mean Girls” musical ruled over the competition with $28 million over the weekend and $32 million through the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday.
Thanks to enduring love for the original 2004 film, an insanely quotable touchstone that turned Oct. 3 into a national holiday, and the power of TikTok, “Mean Girls” is proving the Plastics are still box office draws. The movie musical cost just $36 million and was initially commissioned for Paramount+ before enthusiastic test screenings convinced the studio to release it on the big screen.
Internationally, “Mean Girls” collected $6.5 million from 16 territories, representing less than half of its planned international footprint. The film opens next weekend in the U.K. and New Zealand, followed by other major territories.
Ticket buyers were unsurprisingly 76% female while 60% were under the age of 25. They gave the film a mixed “B” CinemaScore, which is...

Tina Fey agreed to return to 'Mean Girls' if she didn't have to sing. The 53-year-old actress and her co-star Tim Meadows reprised their roles as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall from the original movie in the new big screen musical adaptation, but she admitted their involvement was conditional on them being able to just stick to dialogue.Tina told People magazine: "I am reprising my role as Ms. Norbury because we thought, well, teachers work for a long time. So it might make sense if Tim and I did it."So I called Tim and I was like, 'Will you do it? I'll do it if you do it.' And we said yes, as long as we don't have to sing."Tina relished working with the 62-year-old actor - who previously reprised his role in 'Mean Girls 2' - again. She added: "It was fun. It's been nice to see Tim.

It’s a badge of honor for a movie to be made into a stage musical. It’s an even bigger badge of honor for that musical to be adapted back into a movie of its own. But here we are – 20 years after Mean Girls hit theaters and six years after the show hit Broadway, Mean Girls the musical is now a movie.
Mean Girls is about a teenager named Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) who, until now, has been homeschooled by her mother while Mom does research in Africa. Cady finally gets a chance to attend a regular high school, and it goes about as well as one would expect. To put it plainly, Cady is socially awkward.
She meets a pair of like-minded misfits named Janis and Damian...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"I read this script and thought, 'This is the best script I've read in God knows how long.'" That's what director Mark Waters told Entertainment Weekly in 2014 about his reaction to reading Tina Fey's script for "Mean Girls." At the time, it was called "Homeschooled" but the title didn't matter. What mattered was what was on the page. Those words on those pages would inspire one of the most successful movies about the high school experience ever made.
"I had been wanting to try to learn how to write a movie. I had been looking for a subject matter for me for a couple of years," Fey, who was then working as the head writer on "Saturday Night Live," told...
