There's less than a month to go until Despicable Me 4 arrives in theaters, and Illumination has released a new promo which takes a shot of Black Adam star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Warner Bros.' tax write-offs, and the MCU.
The pro wrestler and actor vowed to change the "hierarchy of power" in the DC Extended Universe with the 2022 movie, only for it to flop at the box office and bomb with critics and fans alike. From there, Johnson's plans to take over the franchise failed and he was promptly ousted when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios.
As for the 100-year slate of "Mega Minions" movies, it's a tongue-in-cheek dig at Marvel Studios and its habit of revealing slates of movies and TV shows years before they're released.
It's all meant in good fun, though we're sure Johnson doesn't appreciate being made fun of in this way.

John Mulaney’s wildly chaotic six-episode run of Everybody’s In LA featured old punks, phone-ins and just about every top comedian in the states.
But the show, which ran for six episodes around the Netflix Is A Joke Festival between May 3 and May 10, was originally designed as a variety show. “I wanted everyone to go make what they wanted and I will put it on. We can’t get renewed. We should actually be a variety show,” he said.
Mulaney was asked why he wanted to make a show that was largely difficult? He said that Netflix approached him as they wanted to do something live across the comedy festival but weren’t entirely sure what. “One idea they had was stand-up at the Geffen Theater. Only with only David doing stand-up, just Laura Nyro stories. He had a tight hour,” Mulaney joked. “I liked that it was an...

With the unofficial beginning of summer — Memorial Day — come and gone, the season has entered full swing. Several of the summer weekends will be crowded at the box office with sometimes three releases competing on similar dates. With action films like Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, A Quiet Place: Day One and Twisters taking us through July, some animated adventures like Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4 will provide fun for whole families.
Deadpool 3 will cap off July with a new Marvel installment from Shawn Levy, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, making way for more sinister films ahead of fall like M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap and Alien: Romulus. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice deserves an honorable mention although it won’t hit theaters until September to lead into spooky season and October.

Okay, not what we were expecting Nicole Kidman to say in a roundtable chat, much less at around the same time when a trailer which shows her making out with Hollywood hunk Zac Efron was released. But you know, Kidman loves her men, and I can just tell that they love her too.

Nicole Kidman just kissed and told The Hollywood Reporter in their latest version of the roundtable talk, featuring fellow actresses Jennifer Aniston, Naomi Watts, Sofía Vergara, Brie Larson, Jodie Foster and Anna Sawai.

While Dreamworks Animation are known for their big franchises such as Shrek, Kung-Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon, they also have notable standalone works amidst their output. One of their strongest is 2010’s Megamind, a witty take on cyclical comic-book rivalries that was sadly overshadowed by that year’s other supervillain-focused animation, Despicable Me. In the age of superhero movies dominating the conversation, a sequel to the Will Ferrell led animation is ripe for commentary. Exclusive: Nikki Glaser is bringing the laughs to HBO.
The comedian’s latest comedy special, Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die, has generated 2M cross-platform viewers since it premiered on May 11, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. The company also said the special had the best premiere night for an HBO comedy special in more than two years.
That just slightly outperforms her previous special, Good Clean Filth, which amassed 1.9M cross-platform viewers in the same timeframe from its own debut. That special was also nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Comedy Special.
Someday You’ll Die is currently pacing to have the top streaming audience for any comedy special in the history of Max (even before the name change).
Taped in December 2023 in front of a sold-out audience at the Moore Theater in Seattle, Washington, Glaser dives into a wide range of topics including why she doesn’t want kids,...

Ramy Youssef’s latest HBO special, “Ramy Youssef: More Feelings,” had been in the works for years — and had evolved over time as Youssef got in a relationship and eventually got married. But some of his routine also became very more front and center for audiences in the wake of the war in Gaza.
“There’s stuff that I do touch on, a tightrope walk of taking really big concepts, and then making them super personal,” Youssef tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “With our show [Hulu’s “Ramy”], we had already done that with Palestine and Israel. And in my stand up, I had already done versions of it. But in the last seven or eight months, it became something that has risen to the surface for everybody. Many people have dreams of being an actor, sometimes in film and sometimes in television roles.
Some actors fall into the opportunity through lots of auditions, training, and from knowing the right people. But others get their start by becoming a famous name first.
Athletes are often in the public eye, gaining a following for being good at their chosen sport. Once they retire from their profession, some continue to grow their popularity through other ventures.
Many athletes turn to acting, whether through television advertisements and commercials like Coach Prime, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, Eli Manning, and Kevin Durant.
Other athletes like Travis Kelce, Pat McAfee, Deion Sanders (Prime), and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. do podcasts to attract a following.

Loren Brovarnik‘s mom, Marlene Goldstone, didn’t earn herself any fans after this week’s episode of 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After?
As we’re watching this season, Loren decided to go under the knife to have a Mommy Makeover.
The hours-long procedure went well, but the weeks-long recovery process has just begun for Loren, putting an extra workload on her husband, Alexei Brovarnik, and her parents, Marlene and Bryan.
Marlene questioned why Loren opted to have her surgery while her kids were still young and while Alexei’s father was visiting from Israel.
Although she disagreed with the timing of Loren’s surgery, Loren admitted, “I know – it was my decision.”
“So then, no complaining allowed,” Marlene fired back.

Christine Brown is a new woman since divorcing Kody Brown.
The Sister Wives star has her husband, David Woolley, to thank for that in many ways.
The lovebirds tied the knot in October 2023 and have been enjoying each other’s company every second since.
Most recently, David has been introducing Christine to some of his interests, and as far as he’s concerned, he’s “corrupted” his wife of seven months.
David took to Instagram recently to share a video of himself and his lady love as they had some fun on the deck of their Utah home.
Christine and David recreated Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s famous “Shake-n-Bake” scene from the movie Talladega Nights.

With the box office being in dire straits, I feel a little awkward telling you to stay home and watch stuff on Netflix. Anyway, stay home and watch stuff on Netflix!
All kidding aside, summer is bearing down upon us, and that means unbearable, scorching hot temperatures. (Thanks global warming!) So, what better way to burn though your free time than by plopping yourself down in an air-conditioned theater and checking out the latest releases? After a relatively slow start to the year, June looks to turn things up a notch with some notable tentpoles. Tragically, however, you can't spend all of your non-working hours at the multiplex -- not even for the "Lord of the Rings" re-release.

Apatow remains managed by Mosaic’s Jimmy Miller and lawyered by Ziffrin Brittenham. Apatow’s successes in the comedy space range from Freaks and Geeks and the HBO series Girls to films like Talladega Nights, The 40-Year Old Virgin, Trainwreck, the Anchorman films, Bridesmaids, Step Brothers, Superbad, Knocked Up, Begin Again, Funny People, The Big Sick, The King of Staten Island, Bros, Pineapple Express and so many others. This summer, "Despicable Me 4" is coming to theaters, bringing back Steve Carell as Gru, the super-villain who has since become an agent of the Anti-Villain League. Over the years, Gru and his girls Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Madison Polan) have been through plenty of wild adventures, and now that they're joined by Gru's wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig), they're welcoming a little bundle of joy into the family: Gru Jr., who is apparently intent on tormenting his dad.
However, the family will be forced on the run, as Gru is forced to deal with a new nemesis in the form of Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (Sofia Vergara). Of course, the little yellow Minions will be joining them, ensuring there will be plenty of chaos (and bananas and farts) in theaters this summer.

Network executives once came to the upfronts on a mission to get advertisers excited about a handful of new series coming in the fall. This year, TV’s big players took a T-shirt cannon approach.
Every one of the major presentations during the May 13-15 sprint in midtown Manhattan — NBCUniversal, Fox, Disney, Amazon, Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix — emphasized the breadth of the company’s content offerings. Call it the everything-everywhere-all-at-once strategy for the streaming age.
As always, common themes emerged across the week. “Connections” was the buzziest of buzzwords used by executives pitching their hearts out from the stage. Without question, the song of Upfronts ’24, the one heard at most if not all events, was Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ’Em.”
After sorting through the firehose of shows and spin, here are a few trends that stood out this year.
1) Star-Power Surge
Last year, the writers strike kept boldface names from appearing at the upfronts.

When Emma Stone, star of Disney’s Cruella and Searchlight’s Poor Things, introduced CEO Bob Iger at the company’s Upfronts presentation this week – the first time that the former TV chief had been on stage at the advertising rodeo in 30 years – it was clear that this is no longer just a TV event.
“To say a lot has changed since 1994 would be an incredible understatement and I’m not just talking about the color of my hair, or my fashion choices,” Iger said.
Stars such as Ryan Reynolds, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell and Jake Gyllenhaal were all highly visible presences across the week to promote their recent and upcoming feature films.
It marked a sea change for the Madison Avenue set, who were previously treated to a cavalcade of television stars promoting the small-screen, usually fresh from the broadcast pilot process. Unlike April’s CinemaCon,...

Welcome to the 259th episode of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter’s TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executives and other guests, and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
Here’s how this week’s episode plays out:
1. Headlines
Will Ferrell, Anthony Mackie, Seth Meyers, The Other Black Girl and Not Dead Yet lead the week’s non-upfronts TV industry headlines.

It used to be all about the trailers and the broadcast fall schedules. Now those are largely a thing of the past as the media sector’s upfront presentations to Madison Avenue ad buyers continue to evolve.

1. The Streaming Giants Came to Play Reese Witherspoon attends as Amazon debuts Inaugural Upfront Presentation at Pier 36 on May 14, 2024 in New York City.

Exclusive: 20th Century Studios has acquired an original feature pitch from Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern (Booksmart), enlisting Gloria Sanchez to produce.
While plot specifics under wraps, the project is described as a mother-daughter comedy with two strong female roles.
On the film side, Haskins and Halpern most recently penned 80 for Brady, the comedy starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno and Sally Field, which Paramount released last year. They’re perhaps best known for scripting Booksmart, the BAFTA and WGA Award-nominated 2019 comedy directed by Olivia Wilde.
Creators of the CBS show Carol’s Second Act, starring Patricia Heaton, as well as the ABC sitcom Trophy Wife, the pair are currently under an overall deal in television at CBS Studios. Nominated for an Emmy for their work on staff of ABC’s Black-ish, they’ve also written on series like Good Girls (NBC), The Mayor (ABC) and Imaginary Mary (ABC), to name a few.

Exclusive: Writer-director-producer Judd Apatow has left UTA, ending one of the most tenured relationships with a major filmmaker and a major agency.
Apatow spent 30 years at the agency, 20 of them with David Kramer, and he remains managed by Mosaic’s Jimmy Miller and lawyered by Ziffrin Brittenham. These long relationships often come to a close, usually when the client wants to shake things up at a moment when it is hard, particularly in the comedy space. It was amicable, and I hear he’ll be meeting with CAA and WME.
But this is a moment to tip the hat at how the agency helped Apatow build his brand, and how Apatow’s prolific successes were a major part of building UTA. There aren’t many tenured relationships that led to as much success as Apatow has had and how many careers he has launched in that time. That goes from...

There is lots of news dribbling out of Netflix today.
While we don’t have many details, we might as well get the discussion started.
Here’s what we’ve got.
Adam Sandler Revives Happy Gilmore
For fans of Adam Sandler, the movie Happy Gilmore might be one of his greatest achievements.
Golfers rarely get the movie star treatment despite the amount of money that goes to the winners, but this 1996 movie uses adversity to push him toward the big prize.
Today, Netflix announced that they’d be reviving Mr. Gilmore, but little else is known.
Should some of Happy’s old rivals return?
Christopher McDonald played Happy’s rival Shooter McGavin, and he mentioned the project in March.
Whether that means he’ll be along for the ride remains to be seen.

Will Ferrell is making a rare foray into scripted television in a big way.
The former SNL star, whose acting credits have mainly focused on films, is co-creating the new Netflix comedy series Golf alongside Ramy Youssef (Ramy) and Josh Rabinowitz (The Carmichael Show). Ferrell and Youssef are set to star.
In his first leading role in a comedy series, Ferrell will star as a fictional golf legend. Details regarding Youssef’s role are under wraps.
Ferrell was previously developing a series following a professional golfer who becomes the face of a controversial new league competing with the PGA, as Deadline reported exclusively back in 2023. “It also evokes one of Ferrell’s signature movies, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Tom Brady’s first roast will likely be his last.
During an appearance on “The Pivot Podcast,” the retired quarterback revealed that some of the jokes made during his recent Netflix roast poorly affected his children and that he wouldn’t sign up to do it again. While he didn’t specify the jokes in question, many of the comedians who took the stage targeted his high-profile marriage and divorce to Gisele Bündchen, with whom he has two kids. (Brady also has a third child with Bridget Moynahan.)

The television industry’s annual “upfront” is usually a place where advertisers get to preview new series and specials, not blockbuster movies, so NBC raised eyebrows Monday when one of the first previews it showed to an audience at Radio City Music Hall was of the coming Universal film “Wicked.”
NBCUniversal, chief content officer Donna Langley told the crowd, was “excited to build up our story legacy across film, TV and streaming.”
Movies and premium cable series from HBO and Showtime used to be something traditional TV advertisers got their hands on only after they had made their way through theaters and pay-tv windows. Now, as a batch of this year’s upfront showcases reveal, they are increasingly being dangled before Madison Avenue as a major reason to support TV companies.
Warner Bros. Discovery is expected to make a similar point at its upfront Wednesday morning, when executives talk to...

Tom Brady survived through his scorching Netflix roast, heralded as a major win for comedy.
The NFL legend was a good sport throughout the event, while comedians, including Nikki Glaser, Jeff Ross, and Tony Hinchcliffe, took a flamethrower to his personal life and career through the brilliance of comedic insults.
Some moments hit harder than any sack Brady likely experienced on the football field, and one instance featured Brady seemingly scolding a comedian about a joke that may have crossed the line.
And while the seven-time Super Bowl champion seemed to roll with the punches and even deliver a few of his own, he recently explained why he regretted his decision.
Speaking on his experience with the roast, Brady indicated he “loved” many of the jokes focused on him.
Despite the fun and laughs entertaining a massive live audience and many Netflix viewers, the retired NFL star revealed why he wouldn’t endure it again.
