Damsel (2024)
Loved It!
I didn't expect much from this movie, but wow, was I pleasantly surprised. Granted, the sorry is fairly simple and somewhat shallow, but the action is incredible. The cinematography is fantastic and the special effects are phenomenal. Everything is seemless. Director Fresnadillo did a masterful job. I fell in love with both Elodie and the Dragon. (Millie Bobby Brown is much better here than in that lame role as Eleven in Stranger Things!) And if you find yourself rooting for the Dragon, don't give up! Not sure I like the very end, but I can't come up with a better ending myself, so I'm quite satisfied.
I don't recommend watching this with very young children.
Creature Features (2016)
Awesome Collection of Older Horror Stories
I only recently (sometime in the last year) ran across Creature Features. I found it on YouTube while also searching for old episodes of Thriller, The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock, and others. I immediately formed a virtual bond with all the denizens of the Haunted House in Bodega Bay, including Vincent, the classy butler Livingstone, Handrew, and the impish Tangella. They are all fairly shallow actors, but gee, compared to Elvira or Svenghoulie, they are way more endearing and entertaining. They all exude an air of understated humor and camraderie. You can't help but like them.
Then there are the nightly guests who frequent the showings of the movies. Some of these guests were actors in the movie of the night, some were directors, some authors, and some just hardcore horror movie fanatics like us. They often but not always add some interesting show trivia ir conversations, sometimes not. But they are almost always fun. And they engage in some hilarious banter with Vincent.
And even more, on top of that, we always get to watch a classic, often golden oldie, horror movie. Some of them you will have never heard of; others may be your favorites as a young kid. Regardless, you will have a great evening of weird, spooky entertainment.
The 'Burbs (1989)
Definitely Funny Bone Material
I fell in love with this movie when it first came out, and I found I still love it just as much when I watched it a week ago. It is still hilarious! What a great comedy-horror movie.
The movie showcases a number of great comedic actors. Even the non-comedic actors are highly comedic, like Bruce Dern and Carrie Fisher. They are all so funny. But this is subtle, smart humor, not slapstick or toilet humor. Further, the directing is very good. In fact, this might just be (one of) Joe Dante's best films. And perhaps best of all, Tom Hanks doesn't overshadow everyone else.
I predict you'll find the plot quite funny.
Nutty Professor II: The Klumps (2000)
Kaboom!
Kaboom goes the dynamite! This movie exploded all over itself. I'm telling you, in all truthfulness, it was horrible. I used to like Eddie Murphy, and i believe I've seen every one of his movies. But gee, they're getting harder and harder to watch. And that long, loud, full open mouth screaming laughter that only Eddie does makes me want to shoot myself.
Janet Jackson now takes the part previously played by Jada Pinkett (Smith), but wow, she couldn't act her way out of a paper bag (bless her heart). She had like ZERO character development. They wasted her.
The story is hugely mediocre but somewhat enduring, but only *somewhat* enduring. I'd still watch this disaster just for fun, but you'll likely find it hugely cringe-inducing.
But it's the relentless, unfunny toilet humor that I found so incredibly boring. Maybe, just maybe, 6th grade boys will find it hilarious, but i guarantee you that you won't!
Good Girls (2018)
One Guy Can Ruin the Whole Thing
I started off absolutely loving this show, but then the Rio character became too prominent, and he ruined the whole thing for me. He is such a wimpy "bad guy" that he can't be accepted for the character he plays. He's just way too unbelievable. He wouldn't last a week in the big house except by crawling to his homies for protection while he whimpered like a puppy. And why does he keep referring to Beth as "mama?" That is SO ridiculous coming from a girly man. He's more like a girly girl than a macho bad guy. He's totally miscast. How did casting make such an egregious error? He will ruin the show for you, too.
Monster (2022)
Ridiculous!
Yeah, this is about a monster, but it's the MOVIE that's a monster! The pace is slower than molasses. You can read a book while watching this show. Granted, some parts are good and will hold your attention, but those parts are few and far between. Why? It's like the movie is masturbating while the guy in the movie is masturbating. I mean, really! This show needs to get over itself. You will recognize this habit of Netflix movies to go on and on and on about some trivial matter just so they can make you watch more of their inane footage and hopefully make a few more bucks. Yeah, I'm being negative! So what? I've just lost way too much time to Netflix insanity to pack a punch. How did so many people take those so highly?! They must have been "attracted" to the show's theme. Personally, i find the Dahmer story very interesting, but this movie was DOA. I was bored to death the whole time.
Vikings (2013)
Totally Ridiculous!
First, let me get this off my chest: The Leif Eriksson character looks like a true, absolute Ape! How ugly can a man be? Watch and see. Oh, no, my bad. Don't even bother with this eyesore.
Second, whoever heard of women Vikings, especially ones who sailed across the North Sea in large Viking ships to the foreign shores of England? But they're here in this ridiculous ahistorical fantasy drama. But beware, they still look like men.
And yes, you'll have the required set of Hollywood pornographic scenes. But don't drool yet -- they are as devoid of sexual appeal as the hottest day in the Mojave desert.
