Netflix is notorious for its perfect teen shows, and we bet you’ve seen at least one of them, probably Sex Education, Ginny & Georgia or Heartstopper. However, such series get even more interesting when they’re adapted from popular novels, with fans of the book ardently comparing the adaptation with their favorite nostalgic YA book.
The new underdog show titled Geek Girl is also based on a novel, and it does full justice to its best-selling original. It is now receiving so much hype that it’s holding the first place in Netflix’s global chart, topping Netflix’s bigger projects, including Bridgerton.
What Is Geek Girl About?
The show’s plot revolves around Harriet, an awkward 16-year-old geek, whose life is complicated by bullying and the feeling of not belonging to society. She struggles a lot to make it through coming of age, luckily, her life is about to be drastically changed.

Commissioning by streamers in Australia has plummeted to a new low, according to a new report published today by the Aussie industry union Screen Producers Australia (Spa).
The Spa’s report surveyed its members with 80% of respondents citing “Less” or “Much Less” commissioning interest from streaming services compared to last year.
Respondents to the survey quoted a range of negative impacts of the slowdown, including the mental health of crew to the financing of projects, with 54% stating the slowdown had impacted every stage of the production process, from initial meetings to development and into production.
When asked what the most common reason given by the streamers for the slowdown was, the Spa report says respondents named a “global slowdown in investment” as the top reason while several noted “awaiting government regulation” as the true undercurrent that has affected the industry productivity.

TV content commissioning by streaming companies operating in Australia has tumbled, industry association Screen Producers Australia says.
A recent survey of Spa members found that 80% were experiencing “less” or “much less” commissioning interest from streaming companies, compared with a year ago. Less than 10% perceived more interest and a similar figure felt activity to be “about the same.”
The slowdown stretches across initial meeting activity, development and production. And it is having negative consequences for everything from financing to members’ mental health.
“This data is alarming [..] it is clear screen producers and the workforce they employ are only just hanging on,” said Spa in a statement.
As an English-language territory with highly developed production resources, a large post-production and VFX sector and generous production incentive schemes at federal and state level, Australia previously benefited from the rise of streaming platforms.

Netflix often cancels scripted TV shows, and it always enrages fans. Recently, a popular young adult series got renewed for a third season, which sounded great until the realization arrived that it would be the final season. Naturally, fans are very sad about it, and some of them expressed their anger.
Netflix Cancels Shows & Fans Always Feel The Loss
It’s not just people watching TV from home who get upset when streaming networks cancel shows. Four years ago, TLC’s Outdaughtered starlet Blayke Busby was heartbroken because Alexa & Katie ended after four seasons. Plenty of people couldn’t understand why an award-nominated Top 10 young adult show would get pulled.

In January last year, Netflix also canceled the K-drama, Juvenile Justice. It only ran for one season, but once again, it seemed very popular. It ranked number one in Netflix’s non-English TV series category when it was first released.

Asexuality is rare enough on screen that a film that does acknowledge its existence can build an entire storyline out of it. But the scant few depictions of it in popular media that do exist — mostly in progressive teen shows like Netflix’s “Sex Education” or “Heartbreak High” — generally present storylines about the orientation in an instructive manner for general audiences. Their supporting asexual characters are typically young, confused teens, and their journeys to understand and accept their orientation are highlighted by arcs that pit them with love interests who struggle with the unconventional shape their relationship takes.
“Slow,” the second feature from Lithuanian director Marija Kavtaradzė, offers a somewhat different type of asexual character. Dovydas (Kęstutis Cicėnas) certainly talks about his difficulties coming to terms with his asexuality as a child, but when the audience first meets him he’s decidedly not an awkward teenager. Think about it: Can you name a recent series that gives off Dawson’s Creek, The O.C. or even Pretty Little Liars energy? Shows that offer incredible melodrama, characters you simultaneously love/can’t stand and baffling storytelling choices in a high school setting? Not considering the supernatural ones — if only because their scope tends to reach too far beyond high school — we can count this type of all-engrossing youth drama on one hand. The teen soap output from The CW, Freeform (née ABC Family) and MTV has become all but nonexistent.

After a slow start of 2.3 million views in its opening weekend on Netflix, viewership of Andrew Scott’s “Ripley” barely increased in its first full week of availability. The limited series reached 2.5 million views between April 8 and April 14, making it the streamer’s No. 6 English-language TV title of the week — low for a project of its caliber, given the talent and IP attached.
Meanwhile, “Sex and the City” fell of the chart after debuting at No. 6 when it was added to Netflix the week before via a licensing deal. Though it may or may not be far behind this week’s No. 10 series, it seems that the HBO classic didn’t reach Gen Z in the way Netflix had hoped — or maybe they’re just tuning in on Max, where the series was already available.

3 Body Problem clocked another week atop Netflix’s TV charts — though it appears to have been a slow week for the streamer’s series.
The drama series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, as well as Alexander Woo, clocked just 4.8M views in its third week at No. 1. Consider that the series tallied 11M views in its first weekend on Netflix and could only muster second place.
The series now sits just below 40M views in total since launch, which places it about halfway to the most popular list. It would need more than 83M views in its 91-day premiere window to beat out The Witcher Season 1. This is still looking relatively unlikely, since the series peaked with about 15.6M views in one week and viewership has steeply declined in the past two measurement periods.
The Gentlemen took third place again, but its viewership also declined to 3.7M views.

Australian producers are “at risk” of becoming “slaves” to international streamers, a top industry body has warned, as the debate around regulation heats up in the country.
Screen Producers Australia (Spa) made the comment in a statement issued to the National Cultural Policy inquiry hearing today for the government’s upcoming ‘Revive’ plan. Streaming regulation has become the hot button topic since the long-term plan to revamp the arts in the country was first announced in January last year.
Spa, which represents most of Australia’s main producers, has been consistently vocal in its criticism of the global streamers. It is advocating for the likes of Netflix and Prime Video to spend a minimum 20% of their local revenues on Australian content within three years.
The Australian government has pledged to introduce streaming regulation on July 1, but is yet to table a motion in Parliament, leaving producers in limbo over what...

Attention SLTs: Class — and chaos! — is back in session at Heartbreak High for Season 2.
The Australian teen drama series follows a new generation of students at Sydney’s Hartley High as they navigate friendships, love, sex, and growing up. A reboot of the popular ’90s ensemble series of the same name, this Heartbreak High brings the drama to the 2020s: Imagine a Down Under Degrassi meets Euphoria, with the colorful style and graphic eyeliner perfected by the Spanish teens of Elite.
Season 1 begins when students discover a secret “Incest Map” — essentially, a chart that diagrams all the hookups within their year at school — and the ramifications are not pretty. To begin with, the subjects of the map must join the newly formed Sexual Literacy Tutorial class, aka SLTs (pronounced “sluts”). And if that’s not enough, their politically correct sexual education...

A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.
Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.

There was a time when it looked as though Netflix was poised to become the streaming world's answer to HBO.
Like the network that brought you The Sopranos and Deadwood, Netflix created its own niche, and at first, the streaming giant seemed to be focused on supplementing its movie library with a wide array of prestige original series.
But in recent years, the Og streamer abandoned that strategy in favor of an approach that's less ambitious and -- well, more depressing.
These days, there's a pervasive feeling that Netflix is more TBS than HBO.
The platform that delivered Orange Is the New Black, The Crown, BoJack Horseman, and Narcos is now churning out far more pedestrian fare -- basically, the sort of stuff you'd find on basic cable.
The list of series recently renewed by the famously cancel-happy streamer includes:
Outer Banks, Blood & Water, Sweet Magnolias, Hearbreak High, and Savage Beauty.

As if we didn’t have enough coming-of-age shows, Netflix keeps serving them up faster than you can say “teen angst.” No, really, this is a genre that has been capitalized on since time immemorial, but recently, it’s really getting out of hand. As is common with angsty teenagery things, most of these shows are based on trends and what’s big in the world at the moment. Everything Now feels like an amalgamation of all things good about Euphoria, Sex Education, and Heartbreak High. Everything Now is aptly titled because it really does engage nicely with everything that is “now.” I thought it was fantastic that we got Bottoms this year, written by talented young people, but here we have a 22-year-old who has already learned the ropes perfectly well. Taking notes from popular shows of the present and the past, Ripley Parker delightfully creates a real-world feeling...

Not so long ago, the only Australian TV shows imported by the UK and US were soaps and the odd kids’ series. Neighbours, Home & Away, Prisoner: Cell Block H, Heartbreak High, and child trauma factory Round the Twist went overseas, but not much else.
It didn’t make for a very complete picture. 30 years ago, if you’d asked a British person to conjure up Australia based solely on its available TV output, they’d have pictured a land of bait shops, haunted lighthouses, prison wings, and cul de sacs where good neighbours become good friends. Ask one now, and thanks to streaming, it’d be a much broader church, based on viewing comedies, thrillers, dramas, detective shows and more.
Here are some of the best Australian TV series currently available to stream in the UK and US. We’ll update this selection as new series arrive.

Ask one now, and thanks to streaming, it’d be a much broader church, based on viewing comedies, thrillers, dramas, detective shows and more.
Here are some of the best Australian TV series currently available to stream in the UK and US. We’ll update this selection as new series arrive.

The Australian show Surviving Summer is a wildcard entry for teen shows on Ott platforms. Not only has it got a fabulous cast that people can fall in love with, as is common with this kind of thing, but it also boasts some fantastic shots of the sea and the sport of surfing. Three years into its local production effort in Australia and New Zealand, Netflix has greenlighted two new series, one feature film and one full-length documentary from Australia.
These are in addition to previously announced renewals of teen series “Heartbreak High” and “Surviving Summer” and the go-ahead for prestige book-to-series adaptation “Boy Swallows Universe” and kids animation “Eddie’s Lil Homies.”
Set in the Australian Outback, epic succession tale “Desert King” revolves around billionaire miners, traditional owners, cowboys and desert gangsters fighting over the world’s biggest cattle station the size of Wales. It’s a hot, dusty, sexy Outback Western with guns and helicopters.
It is directed by Greg McLean and created by Tim Lee and Ben Davies, with production by Paul Ranford. The series is a co-production between Easy Tiger and Ronde.
