Indian studio Applause Entertainment’s upcoming big-budget series “Gandhi” aims to humanize the Mahatma.
The first season covers the formative years of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s life as a law student in London and later as lawyer and civil rights activist in South Africa, during which time he conceived the ideas that ultimately led India to independence from British rule. Gandhi became known as Mahatma, or great soul, for his leading part in the independence movement.
The series sees the reunion of Applause, director Hansal Mehta and actor Pratik Gandhi (no relation to the Mahatma) who plays Gandhi, after hit SonyLIV series “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story” (2020).
The benchmark for on-screen depictions of Gandhi remains Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi” (1982), which won eight Oscars.
“It’ll be complementary in that sense, because Attenborough had some three hours to tell the story, which is a big story and a big life,...

Hansal Mehta’s “The Buckingham Murders,” which premieres at the BFI London Film Festival, will be the first in a franchise.
Written by Aseem Arrora, Raghav Raj Kakker and Kashyap Kapoor, the film follows Jasmeet Bhamra (portrayed by Kareena Kapoor Khan), a detective and mother who, after losing her own child, must investigate the murder of a 10-year-old in Buckinghamshire, going down a rabbit hole of secrets, where almost everyone in the small town becomes a suspect.
Kapoor Khan has said that her character is inspired in part by Kate Winslet’s role in “Mare of Easttown.” “I love ‘Mare of Easttown’ and when Hansal came to me, I said this is something that I’ve really been dying to do. So we’ve molded a little bit on those lines, she plays a detective cop in that,” Kapoor Khan had told Variety.

India’s Hansal Mehta has scored his second successive streaming hit of the year with SonyLIV series “Scam 2003 – The Telgi Story.” This follows his earlier success with Netflix show “Scoop.”
Based on Sanjay Singh’s book “Telgi: A Reporter’s Diary,” “Scam 2003” is written by Kiran Yadnyopavit, Kedar Patankar and Karan Vyas. It follows the story of Abdul Karim Telgi, the mastermind behind a scam printing counterfeit stamp paper in India, which earned $3.8 billion. A stamp paper is a government-issued blank document with headers of varying financial values that are used to validate most business transactions in India.
The show is the second in the “Scam” series after SonyLIV’s “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story,” also created by Mehta. This time around, Mehta entrusted directing duties to Tushar Hiranandani as he wanted fresh eyes on the material. Mehta was also busy wrapping “Scoop.”

When Scam 1992 broke into the Indian Ott space three years ago, the web series scene in this country didn’t have much to offer other than Sacred Games or Made in Heaven. Upon its arrival, Hansal Mehta’s biographical epic on the convicted stockbroker Harshad Mehta not only became a rage among the audience, but it also made people take the Indian Ott space seriously. Three years later, its lead star, Pratik Gandhi, a relatively unknown face back then, is a household name who we regularly see in commercials where the now iconic Scam 1992 intro music plays in the background. Hansal Mehta, already a prolific director at the time of the show’s arrival, is on a career-high after delivering the Netflix thriller series Scoop only a few months ago. Considering all that, the second installment of the Scam franchise, titled Scam 2003: The Telgi Story, is possibly the most...

Scam 2003: The Telgi Story
From the way the astonishing Gagan Dev Riar portrays him, Abdul Karim Telgi was not a charming man to know.
Then what made him bribe his way through the most catastrophic stamp-paper forging scandal in India’s financial history? Not too educated, minimally charming, not a great talker either and certainly no Charles Sobhraj when it came to seducing favour providers, Telgi was just a luck-pushing lout who got his way through bureaucracy by greasing palms.
One of the things I find incredibly hard to believe in this powerful story of absolute corruption is how easily Telgi manages to bribe the emtire bureaucracy. Even the seemingly incorruptible, succumb easily when Telgi gets to tap the greed nerves, first nervously then more confidently.
The case of Madhusudan Mishra in Episode 4 is specially ponderable. At first the seemingly incorruptible Mishra refuses to be bribed. Then Telgu gets...

During the challenging year of 2020, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Hansal Mehta’s Scam 1992 emerged as a major success. Owing to its unskippable intro music and Prateek Gandhi’s outstanding performance, the show gained immense popularity. Now, after three years, Hansal Mehta is set to release another installment in the series, focusing on India’s infamous scam from 2003, The Telgi Story. While various films, series, and documentaries like Paper starring Rohit Roy or 2009’s Mudrank: The Stamp have already explored this scam, a unique take is expected from this new series to offer a fresh perspective. Unlike the previous series, Scam 1992, Mehta’s involvement is limited to him being the showrunner, as the direction is handled by Tushar Hiranandini.
The series revolves around Abdul Karim Telgi, a lower-middle-class hawker with big dreams. Despite having a degree, he struggled financially and wanted more than just survival. He desired wealth and influence.

He also shared that he was advised by the show’s creative director Hansal Mehta to not to read the book on which the story and the character is based.
Gagan said: “Hansal sir told me not to read the book on which the story and the character is based or even the media stories on Abdul Karim Telgi because that would affect my process of understanding the character. He asked me to stick to the script.”
The reason behind the same is that the character from its own point of view is very honest and that honesty needed to reflect in Gagan’s performance because for Abdul, he himself is a hero.

Eminent filmmaker Ananth Narayan Mahadevan is in post-production on “Phule,” about the pioneers of women’s education in India.
Jyotirao Govindrao Phule and his wife Savitribai were social reformers known for their efforts against India’s endemic caste system. Phule’s first school for girls was founded in Pune, western India, in 1848. In 1873, Jyotirao Phule and his followers began the Satyashodhak Samaj (Truth-seekers’ Society) to campaign for increased rights for the underprivileged. In 1888, the honorific Mahatma (great soul), a term later used to describe Gandhi, was accorded to Phule.
“The two of them are lethal, the husband and wife, because at a time when the girl child was being refused education and just pushed into marriage, Jyotirao chose to actually educate his little wife – she was just 11 at that time, he was 17 when they got married, because it was the time of child marriage,” Mahadevan told Variety.

The first quarter of 2023 has come to an end and the Hindi film industry has little to show for itself. The scene has been dismal, not because of the first quarter, but also because of the second quarter, which holds no promise of box-office boosters.
A lot of producers seem to think it is easier to create content for Ott platforms, which is why many makers have opted to produce for that medium. When you make Ott content, it’s an all-in-one deal. You complete the project, hand it over to the platform and cash out. No hassles such marketing or complying to the terms of cinema chains to endure.
It is you who make a film and it is some marketing wizkid who’ll decide how your film should be released. The problem, though, is that they know little or nothing about which film needs what kind of handling.

Bollywood A-lister Kareena Kapoor Khan is marking a new phase in her glittering career with a brace of films that she terms as “shockingly different.”
Kapoor Khan has wrapped a project that shot in the U.K. under the working title “The Buckingham Murders,” directed by Hansal Mehta (“Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story”). The actor plays a detective and mother who investigates a murder in a sleepy little town in Buckinghamshire. Kapoor Khan said that her character is inspired in part by Kate Winslet’s role in “Mare of Easttown.”
“I love ‘Mare of Easttown’ and when Hansal came to me, I said this is something that I’ve really been dying to do. So we’ve molded a little bit on those lines, she plays a detective cop in that,” Kapoor Khan told Variety. “It’s the first time that I’ve dabbled in that.”

Bollywood star Kartik Aaryan will debut as a producer with his upcoming film “Shehzada.”
Aaryan joins producers Bhushan Kumar, Allu Arvind and Aman Gill. The production companies are T-Series Films, part of their 100-film slate, Allu Entertainment and Haarika & Hassine Creations.
Directed by Rohit Dhawan (“Dishoom”), the film stars Aaryan, Kriti Sanon (“Bhediya”), Manisha Koirala (“India Sweets and Spices”), Paresh Rawal (“The Storyteller”) and Sachin Khedekar (“Dhamaka”).
“Shehzada” is an adaptation of Trivikram Srinivas’ Telugu-language action comedy drama “Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo,” also produced by Arvind, which was one of the biggest Indian hits of 2020.
In what was otherwise a bleak 2022 for Bollywood, Aaryan headlined T-Series’ comedy-horror film “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2,” that was one of the top earners for the industry.
The filmmakers said: “It’s been quite a joyride making this film with Kartik as an actor, but now it’s become even more exciting having Kartik on board as one...

But, despite a casual approach to his characters, the actor has delivered some of the most impressive performances in his career. He surely knows what buttons to push in order to sketch a terrific performance.
Talking to Ians, the ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story’ actor said: “The idea of a character for me doesn’t exist. It’s not like a character lies somewhere outside of your body. But having said that, I would like to mention that the external appearance of the character, the costumes and inputs from the director greatly help me craft my characters.”
