According to new McKinsey & Company research, there are over 62 million Latinos living in the United States who not only account for more than $3 trillion of Gdp but are also avid consumers of film and TV. US Latinos account for 24 percent of box office ticket sales and 24 percent of streaming subscribers. Yet somehow, there still aren't enough Latines behind and in front of the camera even though our viewership doubles when we see ourselves represented on or off screen.
Today, we still don't have enough TV programming that accurately represents us - and the few shows that have been created for us and by us, like "Vida," "One Day at a Time," "Promised Land," and "Gentefied," were eventually all canceled despite their popularity. Among these many cancellations was Dominican American creator Claudia Forestieri's beloved "Gordita Chronicles," which was released in June 2022 on HBO Max and was canceled after just one season.

Every single person knows the sting of their favorite TV show getting canceled but it’s only gotten worse in recent years. The streaming era has been incredibly inconsistent. With an algorithm choosing the fates of shows, these days you’re lucky if a show gets ten episodes, let alone released at all. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance was canceled by Netflix after a single season. Willow was not only canned by Disney+ after one season but also removed from its catalog. The same thing happened with Gordita Chronicles on HBO Max.
Streaming services like Netflix, once known for picking up canceled shows such as Arrested Development and giving creatives limitless freedom are now more known for not giving anything a chance unless it’s a massive Squid Game like success. Before word of mouth even spreads about a show, you often find out it’s canceled or removed entirely.

Eva Longoria may just now be making her feature film directorial debut with Flamin’ Hot, but she’s been laying the groundwork for nearly 20 years — all the way back to her breakout role on Desperate Housewives.
After a decade of directing TV episodes for shows including Black-ish, Jane the Virgin and Gordita Chronicles, Longoria noted that for Flamin’ Hot “all of my TV experience paid off because we move at a very ambitious, fast pace and this movie was very ambitious in our scheduling. I really think wow, all of my 10 years in TV prepared me for this moment, which is a film set.”
“And I used Desperate Housewives as my film school, that’s where I really learned everything,” she continued at Friday’s Los Angeles premiere of the movie, which tells the story of Richard Montañez, a Frito Lay janitor who says he came up with the idea for Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

How does a popular product connect to a seemingly impossible dream? “Flamin’ Hot” presents the true story of one man’s quest to rethink snacking. Janitor Richard Montañez knew Cheetos could be reintroduced with a satisfying kick; all it took was making those in charge believe someone outside the corporate structure.

Hulu dropped its first trailer for “Flamin’ Hot,” an Eva Longoria-directed film about Mexican immigrant and former Frito-Lay janitor Richard Montañez, who claims he invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
The film, streaming June 9, stars Jesse Garcia as Montañez, as well as Annie Gonzales, Dennis Haysbert, Tony Shalhoub, Matt Walsh and Emilio Rivera.
Montañez’s story is that while he was working as a custodian at the Rancho Cucamonga Frito-Lay plant, he thought of spicing up Cheetos with chile powder. He contacted executives to pitch the snack and subsequently outsmarted corporate saboteurs, leading him to become a successful author and businessman.
The accuracy of Montañez’s story is disputed by Frito-Lay itself, which, in a Los Angeles Times article from May 2021, said employees located in the Upper Midwest actually created Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.
Frito-Lay told the Times, “We value Richard’s many contributions to our company, especially his insights into Hispanic consumers,...

Netflix has decided not to renew Latina-led teen dramedy Freeridge, a spinoff to On My Block, for a second season, Rolling Stone has learned. The news arrives just two months after the show first premiered on the streaming service in early February, according to a source.

Nearing the one year anniversary of Discovery and AT&T’s WarnerMedia merger, four Democrats in Congress are calling for the Department of Justice to reassess the deal.
In a letter to the Justice Department’s top enforcers, the lawmakers say that the merger has enabled Warner Bros. Discovery to “adopt potentially anticompetitive practices” that prompted numerous layoffs and reduced programming options for consumers. They allege that “current competition in the media and entertainment industry is inadequate.”
Months before the $43 billion deal was blessed, 30 members of Congress warned the agency in a letter in Dec. 2021 that the resulting competition vacuum would harm workers and consumers. Among the concerns they advanced was that it could dampen “economic opportunity for workers” on top of diverse programming, which became a common criticism after the company canned its $90 million HBO Max film Batgirl, the first DC movie led by a Latina, for a tax write-off.

Ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, four Democratic lawmakers have called on the Department of Justice to investigate the company.
A letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Assistant Attorney General Johanthan Kanter from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts), Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas), Rep. David Cicilline (D-Rhode Island) and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Washington) claims that the merger has appeared to have enabled the company to “adopt potentially anticompetitive practices that reduce consumer choice and harm workers in affected labor markets.”

Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz is opening up about her feelings on the cancellation of Gordita Chronicles, the HBO Max show about a chubby Dominican girl growing up in the 1980s.
“Not only was it disappointing when we heard about the cancellation, it was a shock because we were working to start shooting [Season 2] a few weeks later,” she told Rolling Stone. “It felt very unjust. It didn’t matter that our show was beloved, it didn’t matter that we had good audience numbers. It didn’t matter that we were writing about content that was important for underrepresented communities. None of that mattered.”
The show that starred Olivia Goncalves as the endearing Cucu dropped in June 2022 on the streamer only to be canceled a month later. HBO Max would remove the show entirely from its service by December 2022.
For Muñoz-Liebowitz, having a show where she felt seen “felt like I was reading about my own family.

Brigitte Muñoz-Liebowitz has been working in television writing and production for over 12 years. But the script for the HBO Max original series Gordita Chronicles was the first time she’d ever seen a TV series that mirrored her own family’s story.

Only 10 episodes of The Gordita Chronicles were produced before HBO Max canceled the comedy last summer amid a pullback on live-action kids and family programming. But at least creator Claudia Forestieri felt good knowing that new viewers could still find the show on the streamer.
“I got several DMs from people who saw it in-flight on American Airlines, where a few episodes are still available, and they ended up finishing the season on HBO Max,” Forestieri told Deadline.
But the consolation prize of keeping the show on the platform was short-lived: less than five months after The Gordita Chronicles was canceled, all 10 episodes were removed as part of a library purge that impacted dozens of programs on HBO Max.
At least Forestieri wasn’t alone in getting the boot. In the last few months, scores of shows have been yanked from various platforms, including Westworld, Raised By Wolves, The Time Traveler’s Wife,...

I’m not gonna lie, being a TV fan is hard right now. Not only do we have to worry about the shows we love getting canceled before the story is complete, but now we also have to worry about shows being canceled at random stages of production, or worse getting erased from their streaming platforms entirely. HBO Max has been the worst at erasing its own shows from existence with around eighty total original titles taken off of the streamer last year as Warner Bros. Discovery plans to merge the service with Discovery+. But we can’t even call HBO Max’s great erasure a one-off moment, because now that Showtime and Paramount+ are merging into one streaming service, there are several Showtime originals that have been canceled with plans to erase them from the platform entirely.

The creators behind series “Tuca & Bertie,” “Gordita Chronicles,” and “Whistleblower” have issued statements alleging the Warner Bros. Discovery merger has had disastrous effects on female Poc showrunners.
The statements, published as an addendum to a December 21 Writers Guild of America report on the effects of mega-mergers, are titled “How the Warner Bros. Discovery Merger Hurts Workers and Diversity.” The report claims the Wbd merger de-prioritized female-led series featuring stars of color and ultimately led to the shows’ cancellations.
“The casualties of this mega-merger include numerous projects created by, featuring and/or centering the experiences of women and people of color,” the statement reads, citing multiple projects “including ‘Batgirl,’ one of very few mainstream superhero films to feature a Latina lead actress; ‘Full Frontal’ with Samantha Bee, one of a handful of woman-hosted late-night shows; ‘Gordita Chronicles,’ a series about a Dominican immigrant family whose showrunner was a Latina woman; ‘Tuca & Bertie,...

The Writers Guild of America West released a new bulletin Monday slamming Warner Bros. Discovery for its film and television cancellations as part of its postmerger cost-cutting, saying they prove that the guild’s previous warnings that consolidation in Hollywood would stifle creativity and diversity in entertainment are coming true.
“Absent government intervention, this cycle of reactive consolidation will likely continue until it leaves just three or four companies controlling all content, while content creators and consumers pay the price for these costly mergers,” WGA West warned.
The bulletin also included testimonials from three creators of TV shows canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery: Claudia Forestieri (“The Gordita Chronicles”), Lisa Hanawalt (“Tuca & Bertie”) and Moises Zamora (“Whistleblower”).

While streaming giants such as Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery have signaled a slowdown in content spending, Sony Pictures has not yet felt a change.
“I don’t think the spending on content has changed dramatically. The way the companies are being managed has changed dramatically,” said Tony Vinciquerra, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Speaking at the Bank of America Securities 2022 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference Thursday, Vinciquerra said Sony Pictures, which has a five-year, first-pay-window licensing deal with Netflix, and a similar deal with Disney, is not “terribly concerned” about the rhetoric and has not shifted its production plans. That being said, Vinciquerra believes the level of content spending will change once his predicted consolidation of streaming platforms begins.
“The world doesn’t need six or seven general subscription video services,” Vinciquerra said.

Latinos in Hollywood have been a topic of discussion for years, and due to the cancellation of critically acclaimed HBO Max series "Gordita Chronicles," the shelving of the Leslie Grace-starring 90 million Batgirl movie, and the casting of James Franco as Fidel Castro (double whammy), Hollywood has recently generated criticism from Latinx people in and out of the industry. US Latinos account for 20 percent of all US Americans, with a buying power of over 1.7 trillion, and as avid entertainment consumers, we are the ones who showed up at the box office in 2020 and 2021. We have to turn this pivotal moment into a turning point of positive change for Latinxs in Hollywood.
To move forward, we have to understand the current state of Hollywood's film and television Latinx representation. This requires us to analyze our complicated history. I'll focus on two of the most glaring issues at hand: the never-ending stereotypes...

In the course of 12 tweets Thursday, Batgirl actress Ivory Aquino, who plays Alysia Yeoh, Barbara Gordon’s roommate and the first major trans character in a live-action DC movie, expressed her grief to Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav over the studio’s cancellation of the film, and pleaded with him to “Consider releasing Batgirl.”
However, despite news of rumored screenings on the Warner Bros lot, which some close to the film are baffled by, we hear that a decision to revive Batgirl is unlikely. Warner Bros Discovery has already written the production, budgeted at roughly 80 million, off its books, and for the studio to turn around and sink more millions into it is impossible from all accounting maneuvers.
In speaking with those close to the film about those on-the-lot screenings, some were jarred: They didn’t get an invite, not to mention the film has no VFX, no music track.

The other series on the chopping block are “Merry Little Batman,” “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,” “Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Tunes Musical,” “Did I Do That to The Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story” and “The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie.” Production on all six series continues, with plans to shop them to platforms besides HBO Max. Warner Bros. Animation is the studio for each, with the exception of “The Amazing Word of Gumball,” which is being produced by H-b Studios Europe.
“Batman: Caped Crusader” was meant to build on “Batman: The Animated Series,” which was co-created by Timm and aired on Fox Kids for 85 episodes from 1992-1995. This is the second project from J.

HBO Max has canceled upcoming animated feature film “Driftwood[/link],” Variety has learned. From Cartoon Network Studios, the film was greenlit just three months ago.
The family adventure movie is one of many titles being lost at the streamer — just last week, nearly 40 series and films were removed from the platform, such as “Little Ellen,” which had 20 completed episodes that were yet to be released. The losses of these projects come as a result of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger and CEO David Zaslav’s determination to cut 3 billion in costs.
Announced by HBO Max on May 6, “Driftwood” was set in a decaying forest civilization dependent upon a toxic fuel source and ruled by an evil organization. The film was meant to follow Clover, a tiny mouse-like creature who races across the stars to find Driftwood, society’s last free city which may hold the key to a safe and sustainable...

Months before the Justice Department blessed the 43 billion Warner Bros. Discovery merger, 30 members of Congress warned the agency in a letter that the resulting competition vacuum could allow the newly formed giant to ignore what consumers want. Among the antitrust concerns they pressed was that it could dampen diverse and inclusive programming — which has become a common criticism after Wbd canned its 90 million HBO Max film Batgirl, the first DC movie led by a Latina, Leslie Grace.
“There’s been no indication with Batgirl that they’ll shop it around,” Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So this incredibly gifted Latina actress and wonderful story get thrown down the drain for a tax write-off.”

In the memo (read it in full below), Bloys lays out the responsibilities for his top executives on the scripted and documentary side who are staying on and also highlights the accomplishments of the top executives who are leaving as a result of the layoffs: Jennifer O’Connell, Jennifer Kim; Michael Quigley and Linda Lowy.

Warner Bros. Discovery Friday detailed its charges for the second quarter that included a combined 825 million hit on the content side, including 496 million for content impairment and 329 million for content development write-downs, as well as 208 million for employee terminations for the three months ended June.
As reported Thursday, Wbd posted a net loss of 3.4 billion (or 2.2 billion pro forma) in its first quarter as a combined company, recording 1 billion of restructuring and other charges (and 983 million of transaction and integration expenses). An SEC filing today said that, “Content impairments and development write-offs resulted from a global strategic review of content following the Merger. Employee terminations relate to cost reduction efforts and management changes. These charges resulted from activities to integrate Wm and establish an efficient cost structure.”
Restructuring and other charges by segment stood at 200 million for studios, 308 million for networks and 475 million for Dtc.

Kids and animated content are set for a broad swath of cuts across Warner Bros. Discovery.
Yesterday, Deadline revealed that HBO Max had canceled Ellen DeGeneres’ preschool series Little Ellen and it’s emerged that this was part of a much wider strategy shift in kids animation.
Warner Bros. Discovery operates kids channels such as Cartoon Network and Boomerang and has had a pipeline of kids shows on HBO Max.
The animation pullback followed Deadline’s exclusive story on Friday on HBO Max and the cancellation of Gordita Chronicles, in which the streamer said via a spokesperson that “live-action kids and family programming will not be part of our programming focus in the immediate future.”
Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels, on the company’s earnings call, confirmed that kids and animation content, across both streaming and linear networks, would be cut “without an adequate investment case against them.”

When I first saw Latino Filmmakers Network's Instagram post of "Gordita Chronicles"'s cancellation on HBO Max, I was disappointed but not surprised. In 2022, Latinx shows continue to get canceled at a rate that makes it hard to not take personally. If a critically acclaimed family sitcom with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating couldn't survive the curse of the Hollywood Latinx family TV show, what can? Many believed this was the one. Since the cancellation was announced, the public's passionate outrage has manifested into a full-on #SaveGorditaChronicles digital campaign with the hope that another network picks up the beloved show. As Lfn said, "We want to see what happens in the 2nd season. Somebody pick it up!"

Forestieri first met Munoz-Liebowitz while both participated in NBC’s Writers on the Verge program in 2013. Forestieri, who also is an alumna of the ABC Disney and HBOAccess writing programs, landed her first staff writing job on Freeform’s Good Trouble in 2018. She went on to...

Netflix's episode of "Love, Death + Robots" Vol. 3 titled "Jibaro" was recently nominated for an Emmy for outstanding short form animated program. The short was directed by Spanish director Alberto Mielgo, who won an Oscar earlier this year for his short animated film "The Windshield Wiper." For those unfamiliar with Netflix's "Love, Death + Robots," the series consists of a collection of animated shorts that all center on three core themes: love, death, and robots. Sounds simple enough, right? But there's a lot more abstraction, complexity, and depth than one would imagine. While the short was created with the intention to leave room for many different interpretations, one thing that's not clear - particularly for Latinx viewers - is why it was named "Jibaro."

I remember when there was such a profound lack of Latinx representation in Hollywood that even seeing our beloved Jennifer Lopez playing a Latina maid in "Maid in Manhattan" felt like progress - compared to films in which we were portrayed as sexpots, gang members, or drug lords. For years, Hollywood has perpetuated harmful stereotypes of Latinx communities, and this failure to humanize Latinxs in mainstream media, film, and television directly impacts the way we are treated by society. While recent years have seen more positive portrayals in Hollywood, it's been slow.
As a result, we as a community have found ourselves at times overly critical of Latinx films or series; we're often quick to dismiss or cancel certain stories because they didn't get everything right. And while the criticism is often valid - like how Lin-Manuel Miranda's film adaptation of "In The Heights" failed to fully depict the...

Gordita Chronicles is set in mid-’80s Miami, but not one that looks like mid-’80s Miami as it actually was. Instead, it’s a turbocharged version of mid-’80s Miami as it might be imagined by someone looking back from decades in the future — all neon colors, graphic shapes and crimped hair. Which does seem appropriate given that it’s narrated, Wonder Years-style, by Dascha Polanco as an unseen older version of its lead.
The show’s nostalgic pleasures extend as well to the tone, which is as cheerfully wholesome as any family sitcom you might’ve grown up watching. (In particular, it calls to my mind Fresh Off the Boat, which likewise centered on a family dealing with a culture clash.) And to its plotlines, which tend to unfold along well-worn beats grasping at tried-and-true themes. What keeps it comfortingly familiar...
