“We weren’t really that interested in making money, we were interested in making movies,” said Star Wars franchise architect George Lucas about the early days of his career with mentor Francis Ford Coppola in a Cannes sit down discussion today.
In a wide-ranging chat before a packed Salle Debussy Theatre crowd, Lucas, who is here to receive an honorary Palme d’or at the 77th edition shared how his Thx-1138 was accepted into a new section at Cannes, the Director’s Fortnight, back in 1971, but Warner Bros didn’t want to send the filmmaker or his co-scribe Walter Murch to France for the premiere. The duo scraped their money together, went to their own premiere in a side street venue, but snuck in because they didn’t have tickets. She said that it would make a great short film. This is the transcription of J. L. Burgess (a.k.a. I decided not to work from a formal script, so we made the entire film off that outline. People always ask me where the lemon tree is in the movie.

It’s little wonder why French president Emmanuel Macron was visibly moved as he inducted Mediawan CEO Pierre-Antoine Capton into France’s Legion of Honor last October, calling the exec “the ultimate French success story.”
In a country rarely known to promote social mobility, Capton-esque career trajectories are scarce. A self-made entrepreneur born into a middle-class Normandy family, Capton began his professional life as a teen with an entry-level internship, eschewing elite universities, making the exec a rare bird among France’s top media execs. For all that, Capton remains more humble than flamboyant, letting his track record speak for itself.
In 2015, he co-founded Mediawan with investment banker Matthieu Pigasse and telecom billionaire Xavier Niel, and since then the group has traversed a tumultuous period marked by a pandemic, strikes and economic recessions by growing stronger.

Sir Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar in 2020 and received his sixth Academy Award nomination for “The Father.” With his impressive body of work, it’s somewhat stunning to realize he was 54 years old before he became a household name.
Hopkins was born on New Year’s Eve in 1937 to working-class parents in Wales. He was inspired by fellow Welsh actor Richard Burton to study drama. Young Hopkins found success in theater, eventually becoming an understudy for Laurence Olivier, successfully taking over when Olivier became ill. Although his career was thriving in the theater, Hopkins decided to try his luck in television and films, and soon received his break in 1968 playing Richard the Lionheart in “The Lion in Winter.” Hopkins worked steadily on both the small and big screens, often receiving praise for his work. However, it was over 20 years before he became one of the most recognized actors in the...

Olivia Colman’s impressive range as an actress seems to know no bounds. A favorite in the UK for her television work in such sitcoms as “The Office” and “Fleabag,” TV audiences also lauded her for her dramatic performances in “Broadchurch” and “The Night Manager,” as well as more recently with “The Crown” and “Landscapers.” But it has been her estimable work in films that continues to bring her international renown.
With such acclaim from audiences, it was inevitable that awards would begin coming her way. She took home the Oscar for Best Actress for “The Favourite” (2018) and scored an additional Best Supporting Actress nomination for “The Father” (2020). For her work in television, Colman has received four Emmy bids, winning for “The Crown.” She also claimed Golden Globe statues for both TV (“The Night Manager” and “The Crown”) and film (“The Favourite”). The Crown, The Sixth Sense and The Father actress Olivia Williams has opened up about the “harrowing” time she spent on the set of Friends back in 1998. Williams appeared as a bridesmaid in the two-part season 4 finale of the iconic series, “The One with Ross’ Wedding.”
Recently queried about previous remarks she’d made regarding her stint on the show, Williams told The Independent, “Well, just as an example, I was taken to the studio in a shared car with a wonderful actress whose character, I think, was called ‘Old Woman.’” The actor, whose name Williams did not recall, was “distinguished” and “very good,” but at one point, “a producer – who shall remain nameless – just yelled at her: ‘You’re not funny!’ And she didn’t come back the next day. So that was alarming.”
Williams also told the newspaper, “Friends was a brand, and you had to fit the brand.

Five full weeks after the Oscars, the Writers Guild of America finally got around to giving out its awards. Oscar winner Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”) won the original screenplay prize while David Hemingson (“The Holdovers”) picked up the adapted screenplay trophy; he had lost at the Oscars to “Anatomy of a Fall,” which was ineligible here.
Three other scripts deemed ineligible by the WGA went on to win Oscars in the past decade: “Birdman” (2015; original), “The Father” (2021; adapted), and “Belfast” (2022; original). During that time, 68 of the WGA Awards nominees numbered among the 100 screenplays that reaped Oscar bids.
Two other Oscar contenders — “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” — were ruled out of the running by the guild before nominations were announced way back on Feb. 21. The WGA included “Barbie” in the original lineup while the academy had it over in adapted. That was the third time in a decade that...

Emma Stone became the lucky 13th two-time Best Actress Oscar champ with her recent win for “Poor Things.” And she could well be adding an Emmy to her awards collection for her leading role in Showtime’s idiosyncratic drama series “The Curse.”
“The Curse,” created by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, follows a newly married couple (Stone and Fielder) who host an HGTV show while trying to conceive a baby and navigate a curse. Sure the series is rich in cringe comedy that is hard to tear your eyes from even if you watch through your fingers. But it is also intelligent, dark and surprisingly moving. At the heart of it all is Stone, who delivers yet another tour de force, as noted by critics.

Searchlight Pictures has signed a first-look deal with Olivia Colman and Ed Sinclair’s South of the River Pictures. Olivia Colman got candid about the gender pay disparity in Hollywood during a recent appearance on CNN’s “The Amanpour Hour.”
“Don’t get me started on the pay disparity, but male actors get paid more because they used to say they drew in the audiences,” Colman said. “And actually, that hasn’t been true for decades, but they still like to use that as a reason to not pay women as much as their male counterparts.”
Host Christiane Amanpour then asked Colman if she has experienced pay disparity herself, despite being an Oscar winner.
“I’m very aware that if I was Oliver Colman, I’d be earning a fuck of a lot more than I am,” “The Crown” star said in response. “I know of one pay disparity, which is a 12,000% difference. Do the maths, I know.”

Olivia Colman has enjoyed one of the most acclaimed acting runs of the past decade, winning an Oscar for “The Favorite” in 2019 and receiving nominations for “The Father” and “The Lost Daughter” in addition to playing Queen Elizabeth II on “The Crown.” But the English actress doesn’t feel like her compensation has caught up to her success.

New in theaters is “One Life” starring legendary actor Anthony Hopkins as real-life British humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton. Just three years ago he led French playwright Florian Zeller‘s feature directorial debut “The Father.” It not only managed to win him a second Oscar for Best Actor following “The Silence of the Lambs” back in 1991, but it also made headlines. One reason was how it was unconventionally the final award presented during the telecast that year because the sentimental favorite, Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), was widely expected to win posthumously. Hopkins pulled off a huge upset, though, and he wasn’t even there to accept it. How did that win happen? Here are five reasons.

Two-time Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins has signed on to star in Eyes in the Trees, a reimagining of H.G. Wells’ The Island of Dr. Moreau, which is co-written by “The Bay” and “Days of Our Lives” actor Mike Manning.
According to Deadline, Hopkins will portray a geneticist who has been isolated after the government stopped funding his research following the violent outbreak of one of his test subjects. Later, two renowned filmmakers and their crew embark on a journey of discovery, only to find their excursion turned into a fight for survival for themselves and the entire human race.
First published in 1896 by Wells, several adaptations of “The Island of Dr. Moreau” have since followed, including 1932’s “Island of Los Souls” and the a 1977 film “The Island of Dr. Moreau,” which starred actor Burt Lancaster. By taking home the 2024 Best Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy blazed a trail as the first Irish-born lead performer ever honored by the film academy. Prior to his victory, there had not been a native Irish acting winner in over 30 years nor any from his city of Cork, as the only earlier examples had involved supporting winners and fellow Dubliners Barry Fitzgerald and Brenda Fricker. His historic achievement brings the total number of different countries that have produced acting champs during the last decade to eight.
As has been the case throughout practically all of Oscars history, the United States is by far the dominant birthplace among the 2015-2024 acting winners. Of the group’s 37 unique members, 26 (or 70.3%) originate from there, including newly-crowned victors Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). Just one more nomination and the Poor Things men will make the list!
When we last updated the male version of this list Anthony Hopkins had yet to win his second Oscar for The Father (2021). Also moving up the list since then are Denzel Washington (who forced an expansion of the throne room itself with his 9th acting nod via Tragedy of Macbeth) and Robert De Niro with his 8th nomination for Killers of the Flower Moon. Despite a few moves up the latter the only "new" entry is Bradley Cooper, scoring his 5th acting nod for Maestro though that poor things duo Mark Ruffalo (just nominated) and Willem Dafoe (just missed) both feel likely to enter in the next year or three given how often they work and the plum roles that come there way. They have identical Oscar stats with 4 nominations and 0 wins each.

Sir Anthony Hopkins is a Welsh actor who is recognized as one of the best British actors in Hollywood. Despite all that he has achieved, Hopkins could not manage to keep TV personality Martha Stewart as his girlfriend for a peculiar reason. In fact, Stewart broke up with him even after he worked on an Academy Award-winning movie.
Having worked as an actor in the entertainment industry for more than six decades, Hopkins is the recipient of some prestigious awards such as Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, and Primetime Emmy Awards. In addition to this, he has also won the Laurence Olivier Award, which is awarded to those who excel in professional theatre acting. However, none of this could stop Stewart from breaking up with him.

Tomorrow night, ABC is airing The Oscars. Hooray? While I’ll certainly be watching, I must admit that the Oscars have certainly lost their lustre over the years, at least as far as I’m concerned. When I was a kid, the Oscars seemed so much larger than life. I vividly remember every Oscar night being an event as a kid, with the ceremony (more often than not hosted by Billy Crystal) crowning the winners as – in my mind anyway – the kings and queens of Hollywood.
Indeed, it seemed like a movie winning an Oscar was the ultimate judge of a film’s quality. When something like The Silence of the Lambs swept the Oscars, it was as if the movie was being minted as an all-time classic (which it ended up being). However, when the Oscars happen tomorrow, does anyone think a major win will permanently change anyone’s career?...

What the new generation might have missed about Anthony Hopkins is that before he charmed all the audiences as the MCU’s Odin, he was already stealing the show with his incredible performances, even scoring a couple of Oscars. But here’s the twist, while he’s over the moon about snagging those shiny Academy Awards, what really gets under his skin is what happens next. It’s not that he’s got beef with the award itself. It’s the whole glitz and glamor and the ceremony itself that just rubs him the wrong way.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), and Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”). Murphy (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Giamatti (18/5), Cooper (9/2), Wright (9/2), and Domingo (9/2).
Whereas last year’s lead male lineup was the first in almost nine decades to consist entirely of Oscars newcomers, this one includes three rookies and two general veterans. Standing alone in having already competed for this specific award is Cooper, who was previously recognized for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2013), “American Sniper” (2015), and “A Star Is Born” (2019). Since he personally helmed both “A Star Is Born” and “Maestro,” he is now the fourth person to direct himself to multiple acting nominations, following Laurence Olivier, Warren Beatty, and Clint Eastwood.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”), Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”), Jodie Foster (“Nyad”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). Our odds currently indicate that Randolph (3/1) will emerge victorious, followed in order of likelihood by Blunt (4/1), Brooks (4/1), Ferrera (9/2), and Foster (9/2).
The only one of these five actresses with any previous Oscar bids to her name is Foster, who is also this year’s oldest nominee by two full decades. Before she bagged two lead trophies for “The Accused” (1989) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1992), she broke through at age 14 with a supporting mention for “Taxi Driver” (1977), becoming the seventh youngest Oscar-nominated performer at the time. The films in contention for the 2024 Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar are “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest.” Our odds currently indicate that “American Fiction” (7/2) will win the award, followed in order of likelihood by “Oppenheimer” (18/5), “Barbie” (4/1), “Poor Things” (9/2), and “The Zone of Interest” (9/2).
This marks only the 14th instance in 96 years of all five Best Adapted Screenplay-nominated films also being in the running for Best Picture. Prior to the last time in 2017 – the year “Moonlight” achieved dual victories – this had happened only twice during the 21st century (2011; 2013) and once during the latter half of the 20th (1965). The bulk of cases occurred almost annually from 1934 to 1943, with the only inapplicable year being 1937.
Respective “The Zone of Interest” and “Oppenheimer” writers Jonathan Glazer and Christopher Nolan are simultaneously nominated for Best Director, while Nolan is also set to face off against “American Fiction” scripter Cord Jefferson in the Best Picture race.

Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.
The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.
Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. Just 30 minutes after final voting for the Screen Actors Guild Awards wrapped up, I made a last-minute switch in my best actress prediction — from Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” to Emma Stone in “Poor Things.” Let this be a lesson: Second-guessing yourself is seldom a good idea.
Lily Gladstone made history as the first Native American and Indigenous person to clinch an individual SAG Award for her portrayal of Mollie Burkhart, an Osage woman, in Martin Scorsese’s gripping crime saga. With a lead actress (drama) Golden Globe and a SAG Award now under her belt, Gladstone’s award-season momentum continues to be formidable. Historically, only seven performers have failed to win the Oscar after winning the unique combination of Globe and SAG:
1995: Lauren Bacall (“The Mirror Has Two Faces”) lost to Juliette Binoche 2001: Russell Crowe (“A Beautiful Mind”) lost to Denzel Washington (“Training Day...

A jam-packed weekend of last-gasp Oscar campaigning — the film Academy’s final round of voting opened on Feb. 22 and will close on Feb. 27 — kicked off on Saturday night with the 30th SAG Awards, the first major awards show ever to be streamed on Netflix. But do Saturday night’s results actually provide reliable clues about what will happen two weeks from Sunday night at the 96th Oscars?
I would argue that they probably do.
SAG Award winners are determined by the roughly 160,000 members of SAG-AFTRA, the world’s largest union of actors, whereas Oscar winners are determined by the roughly 9,500 voting members of the film Academy, 86 percent of whom are not actors, which would suggest that any overlap is purely coincidental.
But it is quite a statement that SAG-AFTRA members voted best actor in a film — which has long looked to be neck-and-neck between Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer over Paul Giamatti...

Odds are that three of the four individual film winners at the SAG Awards on February 24 will be collecting Oscars two weeks later. Over the past 29 years, 87 of the 116 Academy Awards winners in the four acting races had first collected SAG Awards. That success rate of 75% makes this precursor prize a key bellwether to follow when making your 2024 Oscar predictions.
In each of the last two years, all four SAG champs repeated at the Oscars. In 2023, leads Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) plus “Everything” featured performers Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan all had a chance to practice their Oscar acceptance speeches at these guild kudos. Likewise in 2022 for leads Will Smith (“King Richard”) and Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) plus supporting players Troy Kotsur (“Coda”) and Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”).
But be warned: a perfect record of 4 for 4 has occurred just 10 times.

After a year hit with Hollywood strikes and an early buzz positioning Christopher Nolan’s drama about the creation of the atomic bomb as a frontrunner, sentiments from more than a dozen Oscar voters on the first day of final voting revealed a strong backing for Nolan. “Nolan fucking deserves it,” an anonymous voter emphasizes to Variety, highlighting the widespread acclaim for Nolan’s direction and billion-dollar blockbuster.
Furthermore, Robert Downey Jr., a nominee for supporting actor, appears to be a strong frontrunner for his first Oscar, with a significant majority of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) voters indicating their support for him.
It’s important to note that many voters interviewed have yet to cast their ballots, and plan to do so over the weekend after watching more films. Also, this is merely a small sample of the nearly 10,000 eligible AMPAS voters. Nonetheless, Sandra Hüller...

As was the case last year, only six of the current 10 Oscar nominees for screenplay achieved similar recognition from the Writers Guild of America. Three of the four films that were excluded from the WGA rosters revealed on February 21 – “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” – had been deemed ineligible in January, while “Maestro” simply failed to garner enough support from the guild.
Although it’s competing for the adapted screenplay Oscar, “Barbie” is included in the WGA’s original lineup. This marks the third such instance in 10 years, following the cases of “Whiplash” (2015) and “Moonlight” (2017), the latter of which won the favor of both organizations. The remaining original WGA contenders are “Air” and Oscar hopefuls “The Holdovers,” “May December,” and “Past Lives.”

In the history of Black leading actresses at prestigious award shows, Halle Berry’s triumph for “Monster’s Ball” at the Oscars stands prominently, while the BAFTAs lack a similar honoree, and the upcoming Sunday ceremony seems unlikely to change that.
This year’s roster of lead actress nominees boasts a diverse array of talents. Vivian Oparah garnered attention for her breakthrough role in the romantic drama “Rye Lane,” alongside Fantasia Barrino’s captivating performance in the musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” Also vying for the coveted title are Oscar nominated actresses Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), with Margot Robbie (“Barbie”), who’s recognized in the best picture category as a producer. Speculation abounds among pundits and prognosticators, all anticipating a win for one of the three Oscar-nominated women, setting the stage for another year where Black actresses may find themselves overlooked.

“Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy was once in a two-way battle with “Killers of the Flower Moon” actor Leonardo DiCaprio for the top spot in our Oscars odds chart for Best Actor this year. DiCaprio was snubbed, however, while “The Holdovers” leading man Paul Giamatti has snuck up the leaderboard. We now have another two-race horse between Murphy and Giamatti.
The Irish actor has so far only triumphed at the Golden Globes, however, where he won Best Drama Actor for Universal’s historical epic. Giamatti won Best Comedy Actor at the same ceremony and then made a huge stride towards the Oscar podium by edging out Murphy to win Best Actor at the Critics Choice Awards. Both men are nominated at SAG, where we think Giamatti will triumph, while they are also going head to head at the BAFTAs. This is where we think Murphy can claw back some power in this race.

It’s hardly a secret that viewership of the annual Academy Awards telecast on ABC has been in precipitous decline over the past four years or so in the age of Covid, with a notable but comparatively modest upward bump last year. It was in 2021 that the ratings and audience numbers suffered a massive nosedive in the wake of the coronavirus closing theaters and wreaking havoc with the release schedule, plummeting from 23.6 million viewers on average in 2020 to a scant 10.4 million in 2021. The audience rebounded in 2022 – to 16.6 million – and then a bit more last year, to 18.7 million.
But hope springs eternal this year in the age of “Barbenheimer.” For the first time in some two decades, a genuine box office phenomenon is favored to win Best Picture. In 2004, it was the international blockbuster “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” This time, it’s “Oppenheimer.” Back in...

The Intelligence Unit shares one brain cell, and only Kevin Atwater has primary possession.
The good news is that we mostly got a reprieve from Hailey during Chicago Pd Season 11 Episode 2.
However, the bad news is that Ruzek opted to be equally as hardheaded throughout the installment. Is it the Intelligence Unit or the Anti-Intelligence Unit? Because bless their hearts, some of our beloved squad members are stuck on stupid sometimes.
The second installment was stronger than Chicago Pd Season 11 Episode 1. It also was evident that the two should've been reversed -- this episode would've been an easier transition into the new season, focusing on Ruzek as he struggled with sitting out of the job.
While it wasn't a particularly compelling piece of television, it would've flowed better if we had first seen this one.
But it was still a tough sell, mainly because the series has become so redundant...

Jodie Foster’s Clarice Starling once told Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the iconic film, The Silence of the Lambs, “Why don’t you look at yourself and write down what you see?”
Anthony Hopkins, who played Lecter, is finally taking that advice.
“I’m writing a biography,” the 86-year-old actor told People. He added, “It’s a weird process.”
Hopkins claims he has good recall of events.
“I realized how I’m blessed with one thing. Maybe it’s my actor’s brain. I do have quite a memory. I remember days of months in the years.”
Hopkins also added that his wife of 20 years, Stella, 67, is currently working on a documentary about his life.
Stella has “carte blanche to [cover] everything,” though he doesn’t know how far along her project is.
“I don’t know. I don’t ask her. It’s quite a lot of film. I don...

Los Angeles, Jan 21 (Ians) Legendary actor Anthony Hopkins said that he is writing a biography and claimed that writing a biography is a weird process.
“I’m writing a biography. It’s a weird process. I realised how blessed I’m blessed with one thing. Maybe it’s my actor’s brain. I do have quite a memory. I remember days of months in the years,” ‘People’ reported while quoting the actor.
While he spends time looking back on his own life, his wife of 20 years, Stella, 67, is doing the same.
As per ‘People’, she’s currently at work on a documentary about the two-time Oscar winner. Hopkins says Stella has “carte blanche to (cover) everything”, though he doesn’t know how far along her project is.

With great power comes great responsibility. Canal+ Group has received the conditional approval from the anti-trust board to acquire Orange Studio and Ocs, the film and pay TV operations of Orange, France’s leading telco group.
Canal+ has committed to a number of remedies for an initial duration of five years in order to get the regulatory green light and address concentration concerns.
The acquisition of Ocs by Canal+ could have large ramifications on the local film industry because both players represent the top two sources of pre-financing for French movies. Canal+ is currently on a three-year deal (until the end of 2024) with film guilds to invest an average of €200 million per year in French and European cinema. Ocs, meanwhile, has a deal with producers to invest €20 million annual investment in local pics.
Under the plans presented to the regulatory commission, Ocs will be combined with Cine+, one of Canal+’s channels,...

The Black Keys are coming back with a new album titled Ohio Players, an LP heralded as the duo’s most collaborative to date.
Ahead of Ohio Players’ April 5 release, Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach have shared their first single, “Beautiful People (Stay High),” which they co-wrote with Beck and Dan “The Automator” Nakamura.
“We had this epiphany: ‘We can call our friends to help us make music.’ It’s funny because we both write songs with other people – Dan all the time [as a solo artist and producer], me when I’m producing a record.
