As every entertainment company is in a rush to consolidate its titles under a single streaming service, one unfortunate byproduct can end up being that consumers don’t know what’s available in these suddenly substantial treasure troves of content. When Warner Bros. Discovery merged the bulk of discovery+ and HBO Max’s libraries last month into a new streamer called Max, the biggest influx of content came from the Discovery side of the company.

Director Rob Marshall knew from the outset that the hardest part of his live-action reimagining of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” would be pulling off the Oscar-winning “Under the Sea” Caribbean musical number. It wasn’t just the tricky translation from 2D to CG with hundreds of singing photoreal fish in the underwater environment (courtesy of Framestore’s expert animation) but also the complicated dance choreography set to the toe-tapping song by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman (to whom the film is dedicated).
And they killed it: The joyous musical number is the animated highlight of the film, which deservedly got the loudest applause at early screenings.
Performed by Sebastian the crab (voiced by Daveed Diggs), the song is a plea for young mermaid Ariel (Halle Bailey) to forget about joining Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) in the human world and stay sea-bound where she belongs. Considering the beauty,...

Foreplays is a column that explores under-known short films by renowned directors. Franco Piavoli's Domenica sera (1962) is free to watch below.Despite having been praised by other Italian directors of his generation, such as Ermanno Olmi, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Marco Bellocchio, the fascinating filmography of Franco Piavoli (born 1933) remains something of a secret. He began directing short films in the 1950s and '60s, but it wasn't until 1982—after a long break from filmmaking—that he made his first and best known feature, The Blue Planet. Built on an ambitious superimposition of time scales, the film displays a wondrous depiction of what the director himself has called "the lost alphabet" of animal, vegetal, and human life—something that he would keep pursuing relentlessly in his later four features (all completed during the 1980s and ‘90s), and in many shorts. Often working in close collaboration with his wife, Neria Poli,...

“Who would have thought marine biology and oceanography could engage such an audience?,” “Blue Planet II” executive producer James Honeyborne asks in an interview with Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video above). The BBC documentary miniseries was the United Kingdom’s most-watched television program of 2017. He continues, “But it’s part of our world and it’s the world that we don’t know.… the scale of this place — there’s still so much to explore and it’s so important to us.”
With scores of 97 on Metacritic and 9.4 on IMDb, “Blue Planet II” is among the best-reviewed programs in television history. It is now nominated at the main BAFTA ceremony for Best Nonfiction Series and Best Must-See Moment, having won Best Nonfiction Cinematography and Best Nonfiction Sound at the craft ceremony last month out of seven total nominations. “Blue Planet II” follows 2001’s “The Blue Planet,” which was also presented by David Attenborough.

National Geographic has given the green light to Hostile Planet, a six-part docuseries from Oscar-winning cinematographer and director Guillermo Navarro (Pan’s Labyrinth), Emmy-nominated producer Martha Holmes (The Blue Planet) and Emmy winner Tom Hugh-Jones (Planet Earth II). If there’s one Great British institution that comes in for some flack on a regular basis, it’s the good old BBC. While to many that should just be ‘the old BBC’, with a new series of Strictly Come Dancing (I’m not that big on brevity) looming large, the snipers should be silenced, at least until Christmas. But as this is only a temporary measure, what’s the one thing that the broadcasting giant can count on all year round? Why, Mother Nature of course.
Whether it’s a tiger hunting, a flock of flamingos, or something a bit closer to home like fox clubs at play, these are the things that go some way to justifying the licence fee. Yes, the licence fee; that bone of contention that always leaves the general public feeling a little, well, ripped-off. One failed sitcom after another, overpaid presenters, plus the sporting calendar dwindling every year,...

Netflix is expiring a slew of movies and TV shows in February -- but don't panic! There are few corners of culture more mystifying, more complex and baffling that the Spongebob Squarepants phenomenon. Here is a man - a spongeman - whose adventures make the subsea elements of Bedknobs And Broomsticks look like The Blue Planet. What creature, on god's good Earth, can be friends with a starfish and a squirrel? And live blissfully in an underwater pineapple, presumably a joint development by Dr. No and the Man From Del Monte? But Spongebob is that creature and he's back with another CG adventure in the second movie spin-off of the massive Nickelodeon show, The Spongebob SquarePants Movie: Sponge Out Of Water. Here's the first poster showing Bob in action. With a crab. Little is known of the mesohyled one's journey in this one, but judging by the title and the tagline, he'll be emerging from the sea like Venus or, say, the Kraken, and destroying the seaboard going on adventures.

With his nondescript blazers and mild manner, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is an unlikely radical. But make no mistake: in an age of evolution skeptics and climate change deniers, the defense of science he levies as the host of "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" is nothing short of revolutionary. Of course, a similarly grand sense of purpose accompanied Carl Sagan's "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage" when it premiered on PBS in 1980, eventually attracting 400 million viewers in 60 countries. That the iconic original resulted in no definitive triumph for factuality might lead the discerning critic to offer a more cautious assessment of the revamped "Cosmos," but its very existence -- in the midst of Sunday's packed primetime landscape, no less -- is a bold statement. We're here, we're peer-reviewed, get used to it! Beyond public television's old guard ("Nova" and "Nature" on PBS, "The Blue Planet" and "Planet Earth" on the BBC), much...

Chicago – Blu-ray was made for nature documentaries like “Born to Be Wild” and “Frozen Planet,” both recently released on the HD format and on DVD. As “Chimpanzee” plays in theaters and “Frozen Planet” still holds places in some DVRs since its Discovery Channel airings, nature documentaries seem to be as big as they’ve ever been. Both of these are strong entries in the popular genre.
To be fair, they serve different purposes. “Born to Be Wild” is more for the little ones or the whole family with its G rating and sweet focus on the positive impact that we humans can have on the natural world. Where “Born to Be Wild” is a perfect entry for kids with short attention spans (the IMAX movie runs 41 minutes), “Frozen Planet” is for those looking for something a bit more dense and challenging (you could fit “Born” into its running time of...

"Frozen Planet" is the latest nature series from the makers of "The Blue Planet" and "Planet Earth." This newest offering is narrated by Alec Baldwin and will air on the Discovery Channel in seven parts, focusing on life and the environment in both the Arctic and Antarctic areas.
In the preview video above, playful polar bear cubs ruin a hunt for their mama, while in the video below, a brinicle, or brine icicle, plunges off its ice shelf to the Antarctic seabed, destroying everything in its path.
The premiere episode is titled "To the Ends of the Earth" and features polar bears battling each other for mates; surfing penguins; and orcas who hunt in a well-orchestrated group for seals. It premieres Sunday night (March 18) at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on Discovery.

Studio: Warner Home Video
BBC. Nature documentary. Sir David Attenborough. We don’t really need to say anything more to show this DVD and Blu-ray is worth a look … but we will, of course.
Frozen Planet has excellent pedigree. It’s a BBC/Discovery Channel co-production by Alastair Fothergill, executive producer of the awesome Planet Earth and The Blue Planet: Seas of Life.
In Frozen Planet, Fothergill tackles two disappearing wildernesses: the Arctic and the Antarctic. Featuring shots of the icy landscape and the wildlife that makes the areas home, the documentary was filmed using the same camera techniques as Planet Earth and Life, getting footage above and below the ice.
Among those shown in the series are the wandering albatross, the adelie penguin and the polar bear. And their stories are told by the awesome David Attenborough.
Frozen Planet airs on Discovery in the U.

The bar for nature documentaries was raised in 2001 with BBC’s The Blue Planet, their critically acclaimed look at the world’s oceans that wetted audiences’ appetites for a larger project. If The Blue Planet raised the bar, then it was launched into orbit in 2006 when the BBC debuted Planet Earth, its eleven-part episodic series that spanned the globe exploring its geological and zoological diversity in depth, from the tallest mountains to the deepest seas. Filmed over five years, Planet Earth has yet to be dethroned as the definitive documentary about our planet, and the mind blowing footage it delivers with each episode casts doubts on whether or not it ever will be. The high-definition presentation of this set features sights that most people in the world would never see any other way and in such a pristine and crystal clear format that you can make out the finest details...

Even if you’re not one of those people who sits around watching Discovery HD (mostly because it’s still the best way to use your HD cable subscription), there’s no denying that there’s something wondrous about seeing the wild splendor of our home planet. And no one seems to capture it with the grace and intimacy of the BBC. Their work on Planet Earth and The Blue Planet (among others) has changed forever the scope by which we view our own world, and in turn brought us closer to the world around us. But what happens when they turn that lens inward, focusing on humanity’s journey through this wild world? We get Human Planet, their most ambitious series to date. Feature Presentation Narrated by the soothing, sage-like voice of John Hurt, Human Planet is an 8-episode series centered upon man’s interaction with nature; all the beauty and all the danger. It...

Forget the advertising and the gushing quotes on the posters. Monsters is not the new District 9 or the new anything. Gareth Edwards’ low budget monster movie features Lovecraftian beasts spreading carnage and fear across Mexico and into the USA but it’s more of a road movie than anything else.
Whether you want to read any socio-economic subtext into the material is up to you. The film certainly doesn’t wish to be political, so make of it what you will. Made for £500,000 and shot with a four-man crew – including actors, the advertising probably cost more than the production – with the effects work. Edwards’ background is in special effects supervising and what he achieves on a small budget is very grand and eloquent.
Its glacial pace allows the audience to sink into the exotic environment and spend lots of time with its two central characters – Sam and Calder. There are nods to Jurassic Park,...

If you think that the BBC is unmatched in its output of natural history documentaries, think again. In the last couple of years a new heavy hitter has arrived on the scene and it has had plenty of practice at pleasing audiences: Walt Disney. On Earth Day last year the Disneynature branch of the company released its first film: the epic-themed Earth. This year the studio followed up with Oceans and, in some overseas territories, The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos. Both have recently been committed to Blu-ray and they look absolutely stunning.
Oceans is exactly what the title suggests: an expansive documentary on ocean life that also touches on the relationship between humanity and the sea. Directed by Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud (Winged Migration) Oceans has a narrative that is broad and covers a lot of geographical territory in its feature-length running time. Hence, it doesn’t...

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will play selections of film scores and songs introduced by a dozen men and women who have written some of the most popular film music of recent years. Most of them also will attend a screening of Universal's "Psycho," directed by Alfred Hitchcock with music by Bernard Herrmann, at London's Empire Theatre on Oct. 17 followed by a Q&A session, also in support of Care.

Not to be confused with the short-lived NBC procedural of the same name, Life is an 11-part series that looks at how organisms have adapted to an extraordinary range of situations. If you have seen Planet Earth or one of the British network's other renowned natural history series, such as The Blue Planet, Life in the Freezer or The Life of Birds, you know what to expect. Stunning visual images ranging from startling landscapes to intimate moments in the lives of the tiniest bugs. For the most part Life renders this in spectacular detail and color on Blu-ray. Chicago – No network or film company has ever come close to equaling the nature documentaries produced by BBC’s Natural History Unit. From 1979’s “Life on Earth” to 2001’s “The Blue Planet” and 2006’s “Planet Earth,” the BBC has electrified viewers worldwide with its stunning and often humbling images of life on our planet. This is the type of programming that Blu-Ray players were made for.
The network’s latest miniseries, simply titled “Life,” is unquestionably its most spectacular achievement yet, purely in terms of its visual brilliance. Though some longtime viewers may recognize various animal subjects and factual tidbits recycled from previous shows, the footage (shot over a three-year period) has a crystalline clarity that makes its predecessors look positively murky in comparison. It’s flat-out painful to view the gorgeous shots taken of the Great Barrier Reef, in light of the recent oil spill. “Life” doesn’t need...

The Weinstein Co. and BBC Films have agreed to co-finance The Meerkats, an African wildlife feature. BBC Films will collaborate for the first time with the BBC Natural History Unit to produce the feature. James Honeyborne will direct the account of a meerkat family's struggle to survive.
The BBC Natural History Unit has been involved in feature films that have developed from its own television series, such as Blue Planet and the forthcoming Earth, but this is the first time it has begun a project with intentions of producing it as a feature film.
Meerkats is set to start principal photography in November in the Kalahari Desert.
The Weinstein Co. holds worldwide rights and will begin sales at the American Film Market.
"The film has huge emotional appeal and will really travel internationally. It's a great story with a fantastic team behind it, and we hope this will be the start of a great partnership for the future," said David Thompson, head of BBC Films.

LONDON -- The BBC will announce the new controller of BBC One on Thursday, with speculation putting leading independent producer Peter Fincham in the frame for one of the highest-profile jobs in British television. BBC One is the pubcaster's principal network, with an audience share of 25.2% last year and an annual budget of £812 million ($1.5 billion). Home to such shows as The Blue Planet and Walking With Dinosaurs, the network's output will be under close scrutiny in the year to come as the pubcaster prepares for the renewal of its Royal Charter. BBC reps declined comment on the appointment when they contacted reporters late Wednesday to announce a hastily convened news conference to be held this morning at BBC headquarters.
