A lot of films have been at the centre of controversies in all the years I have been an observer of the film trade. Some, because they chose a subject where a certain community was at the centre of the story, some, while they were attempting a realistic film, and some others who loved a book penned by a renowned writer, decided it was worth retelling it as a film and getting brickbats in return.
Take, for instance, ‘Ramnagari’ by Ram Nagarkar. The film was made by the National Award-winning filmmaker Kantilal Rathod in 1982. Objections were raised against certain references in the film and the Censor Board stalled its release. The problem Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Billu Barber’ faced some 27 years later was similar. The community known as Nayi or Hajam is called Barber in English.
In later years, these examples were followed by communities on a larger scale and somewhere along the way,...

Ramayan, Circus, and Mahabharat have made a comeback on screen, and we are loving it. Here are the other shows which these TV actors wish would come back.
Amrita Prakash:?I think we had some beautiful shows on television in the 90s. There are some wonderful shows that I have grown up watching and performing in, which influenced me as a performer and a person.
I feel blessed to have been part of television during its golden age, in the late 90s and early 2000s- with shows like 'Rishtey' and 'star bestsellers' - which were completely story-centric. As opposed to the Trp-centric storyline we have today, back then every story was spun and told so beautifully, with performances that moved the soul. How I wish we would only bring back these shows to re watch but also to remake. I miss being a part of that wondrous era in Indian television.

From being skeptical about every other form of entertainment available in town and considering it as an opposition, taking crowds away from a cinema hall, the film industry has now embraced all that goes in the name of entertainment. There were times when the arrival of a circus or a Ram Leela in a town were considered as major opposition to films playing in cinemas.
The film industry has faced many threats over the period of its transition to what it is today, a broad-based entertainment industry. With the arrival of the state owned-television channel, Doordarshan, came the first real perceivable threat. Doordarshan, with limited budget and resources and total dearth of talent on its rosters, used films and film-based programmes to capture its audience. On the Doordarshan programme menu about which the film industry was most touchy was its Sunday evening feature film slot. Sundays were meant for family...
