Issa Rae’s career as a Hollywood writer-producer has included four series developed through the studio system, but she says that recent industry tides have her considering alternate avenues as a creator in the future.
“You’re seeing so many Black shows get canceled, you’re seeing so many executives — especially on the Dei side — get canned. You’re seeing very clearly now that our stories are less of a priority,” she says in a cover story for Net-a-Porter’s digital publication Porter. “It’s made me take more steps to try to be independent down the line if I have to.”
Rae is currently under a five-year overall deal with the conglomerate that was known as WarnerMedia when she signed it in 2021, an extension of a relationship with HBO that began in 2016, just before her Emmy-winning comedy Insecure premiered. Earlier this month, Max canceled her comedy Rap Sh!t after two seasons.

In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

A few years ago, actor Lee Sun-kyun had a major role in a film that made history: director Bong Joon-ho’s dark comedy thriller Parasite, which racked up multiple Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. It was the first non-English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. But now Lee’s life has come to a tragic early end. Anne Hathaway is 41 years old, which means she has long defied the warning she often heard as a teen actor that her career would not flourish past a certain age as a woman in Hollywood.
“When I started out as a child, I was warned that my career would fall off a cliff at the age of 35, which is something I know a lot of women face,” Hathaway recently told Net-a-Porter’s digital title Porter.”The thing that has evolved during [that time] is that more women are having careers deeper into their lives, which I think is fantastic. Obviously, it doesn’t mean we should have a ticker tape parade — someone said this to me the other day: ‘There’s so much to be proud of and there’s so much to fix.'”

Emily Blunt wanted to embody complicated women onscreen.
The “Sicario” and “Devil Wears Prada” star revealed that she once told a screenwriter to write her character “like a guy” to not be one-note. “‘Write me like a guy and I’ll do the ‘girl’ stuff. Just write me as you would a man: fallible and complex and difficult and shady,'” Blunt recalled to Porter magazine. “And we are still having to remind people to not hold women to a certain ideal.”
Blunt now leads Prime Video series “The English,” in which she plays a woman seeking revenge for the death of her son in the Wild West. She also executive produces the series.
“I do love that she shows up like Alice in the Wild West and that she looks the image of the feminine ‘ideal.’ And yet, there’s this fever in her for revenge,” Blunt said. “She...

Richard Stark's Parker books are pure pulp pleasure. They're nasty, unsentimental crime novels written with a brutal economy. The prose is stiletto sharp, the stories shaved to the narrative bone. Once you read "The Hunter," which introduces us to the underworld shenanigans of a skilled robber named Parker, you have to read them all – and you can do so in a remarkably short span of time. These books are short and addictive.
Stark's work is so thrillingly vicious that you're occasionally concerned for the author's mental well-being. The author might actually be worried, too, as Stark is the pen name for legendary noir novelist Donald E. Westlake. By all accounts, Westlake, who passed away in 2008, was a lovely man, which makes Parker's adventures the most entertaining therapy sessions ever put to paper. Better to type out one's worst, repressed impulses than act on them.
Unsurprisingly, Quentin Tarantino is a massive Stark fan.

British actor Prasanna Puwanarajah is on a career high with a starring turn in the new season of “The Crown” and his feature directorial debut “Ballywalter” beginning its festival journey by opening the Belfast Film Festival.
Puwanarajah is of Tamil Sri Lankan heritage and has used aspects of his background to inform both his role in “The Crown” and his directing turn on “Ballywalter,” he tells Variety.
In “The Crown,” Puwanarajah plays British journalist Martin Bashir, who conducted the infamous and now disreputed 1995 BBC “Panorama” interview with Princess Diana. Bashir is of Pakistani heritage.

Set during the time when the U.K. was being ravaged by Covid-19, Clarke’s book provides an insider’s look at the pandemic from a hospital doctor’s point of view.
“Rachel Clarke is a palliative care doctor who I used to work with in the NHS, when I was a first year junior doctor and she was a medical student – I taught her how to do IV drip lines. And...

It may have taken 36 years, but the "Top Gun" sequel, "Top Gun: Maverick," finally landed in theaters in May, bringing Tom Cruise's iconic character back to the big screen. The movie's made over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, so it's clearly been a financial success. Add to that the fact that it currently has a 97 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and we feel confident in calling the movie a total success. The sequel was a long time coming, but it was worth the wait. Now the question is, will we have to wait another three decades for "Top Gun 3"?
Unfortunately, there's no "Top Gun 3" currently slated, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. Considering the success of the original movie in 1986 and the sequel this year, it would almost seem silly to not revisit the "Top Gun" storyline for a third film. Some of the...

This article contains spoilers for The Boys season 3.
As we’re fond of pointing out around here, no other show on television understands superhero culture and the effect of its prevalence on our world than The Boys.
In The Boys season 3, the show’s satirical take on the Western entertainment landscape remains incisive and insightful. This season finds Homelander making good on Antony Starr’s promise to become a “homicidal maniac” and in the process the world that Vought created begins to resemble our own more closely than ever before.
Still, one can’t help but wonder just how closely the world of The Boys hews towards reality. Does The Boys‘ canon have the same succession of American presidents that we do? Does the presence of fictional mega corporation Vought preclude the existence of real life monoliths like Google, Meta, and even The Boys‘ parent network Amazon? The show makes...

This article contains spoilers for The Boys season 3 episode 6.
Although no one will ever accuse The Boys of showing restraint when it comes to its over-the-top violence and kinky sex scenes, its source material was even less inhibited by any sense of propriety, and by the time the “Herogasm” miniseries appeared in 2009, comics readers had already experienced thirty issues of sheer depravity. The same could be said of the Prime Video series now that the episode of the same name has aired, but viewers may be surprised that the allusion goes beyond a simple nod to the original.
The comics, for example, introduced Herogasm as a much more massive event than the annual gathering seen in the show. The weeklong orgy necessitated an entire Pacific island and a cover story involving the participating superheroes supposedly fighting in space against an alien invasion as an explanation for their extended absence. In the comics,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Boys Season 3 Episode 6, “Herogasm.”] Has there ever been an episode of The Boys as hotly anticipated as “Herogasm?” In the lead-up to Season 3, headlines swirled regarding the episode’s adult content, the comic’s X-rated storyline, how much would be shown, and more. In the end, “Herogasm” delivers on the promise in its title — there are still plenty of supes and non-supes gettin’ it on. But it also features some poignant character moments, pulse-pounding action, and a jaw-dropper of an ending. All things considered, it should leave fans… plenty satisfied. Courtesy of Amazon Studios The gist of the story is that three groups are all going after “the twins” in Payback, who are hosting the “Herogasm” orgy at their home. Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), Butcher (Karl Urban), and Hughie (Jack Quaid) are headed to the party because Soldier Boy wants to wipe out his old team members for abandoning...
