Al Pacino and Dan Stevens have teamed up for exorcism horror film “The Ritual” from director David Midell.
XYZ Films has acquired worldwide rights to the feature, with plans to release it theatrically in 2025 and arrange international distribution at the upcoming Cannes market.
“The Ritual” was written by Midell and Enrico Natale and produced by Andrew Stevens, Mitchell Welch and Natale. Ashley Greene and Abigail Cowen round out the cast.
Based on a true story, “The Ritual” follows two priests — one questioning his faith (Stevens) and one reckoning with a troubled past (Pacino) — who must put aside their differences to save a possessed young woman through a difficult and dangerous series of exorcisms. The film is an authentic portrayal of Emma Schmidt, an American woman whose demonic possession culminated in harrowing exorcisms. Her case remains the most thoroughly documented exorcism in American history.

A slew of stars came together to say cheese and help raise north of $2.5 million in West Hollywood on Saturday night at the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s 17th annual Evening Before benefit. Co-chaired by Quinta Brunson and Bob Odenkirk, the annual event takes place ahead of the Emmy Awards, and this weekend’s installment shifted to the new year to follow the TV Academy’s celebration due to the dual strikes last summer.
“We’ve had quite a year, and this organization and its fundraiser has helped many weather the storm,” said Brunson. Added Odenkirk, “I’m thrilled to be a co-chair of MPTF’s Evening Before benefit with Quinta. MPTF really stepped up during a very challenging year to support the entertainment community, and I’m proud to be a part of a fundraiser that will help to sustain that vital support.

XYZ Films has acquired North American sales rights to the horror-thriller “Deus Irae,” the debut feature of Argentine filmmaker Pedro Cristiani, and will introduce the film to buyers at the upcoming AFM. Variety has been given exclusive access to the film’s bone-chilling trailer (see below).
Premiering at the Mar Del Plata Film Festival in November, “Deus Irae” follows Father Javier, a priest living a fractured existence. On one side, he assists families who claim to have witnessed miracles, and on the other he belongs to a trio of excommunicated priests who hunt the possessed down to exorcize them under their own terms: with Bibles, fire and shotguns.
But when the only way to crush Evil is by becoming something even worse, he must question how much of his own humanity — or sanity — he’s willing to sacrifice in order to defeat the Devil.

Kelsea Ballerini got “goosebumps” on her first-ever trip to Venice, she tells The Hollywood Reporter.
The singer-songwriter visited the glamorous City of Canals with boyfriend Chase Stokes to attend designer Giorgio Armani’s “One Night Only” event on Sept. 2, which included a haute-couture presentation and party for around 500 guests.
“The pieces themselves were stunning. I really loved the throughline of using the contrast of pretty pastels with black. There were so many looks I was thinking ‘I have have have to wear that!'” she says of the fashion show, which was highlighted by looks featuring diamond shapes and harlequin motifs.
“However, the moment of the night,” continues Ballerini, “was watching Mr. Armani himself take his lap around the runway getting showered with praise and respect — goosebumps.”

One year after becoming the first program in Emmys history to simultaneously net five nominations in a single female acting category, “The White Lotus” has managed to repeat the impressive feat. The only performer involved in both situations is Jennifer Coolidge, who bested her four first season cast mates in the 2022 Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress race and is now heavily favored to do the same in the Best Drama Supporting Actress category. Having already bagged Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Awards for her second season performance, there isn’t much stopping her from once again being called up to the Emmys stage.
The quartet of “White Lotus” ladies Coolidge faces this time consists of Meghann Fahy, Sabrina Impacciatore, Aubrey Plaza, and Simona Tabasco. Also in the running are returning contenders Rhea Seehorn (“Better Call Saul”) and J. Smith-Cameron (“Succession”), who both lost to Julia Garner (“Ozark”) last year,...

The State of the Race
Don’t let last year’s Emmys, where “The White Lotus” star had it in the bag as much as any nominee possibly could, cloud one’s judgment of the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie race. This is often one of the most unpredictable acting categories year-to-year.

David Bernad, Mike White’s longtime producing partner, received his first Emmy win, for outstanding limited series, for season one of The White Lotus. As the Sicilian follow-up prepares to potentially dominate the drama categories this fall, Bernad chats with THR about moving the hit series across continents, killing off Jennifer Coolidge and a taste of what to expect for season three’s jump to Thailand.
David Bernad
Did you get the green light for season two after wrapping season one?
No, it was really only after the show came [out]. After the experience of making the show, and audiences responding to it, Mike then was committed to doing a second season. And HBO came to Mike and said, “What do you want to do next?” He said, “Another season of White Lotus.” They jumped at it. Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the drama races post-nominations.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back, Hollywood is on strike, and the 2023 Emmy Awards ceremony might even take place in 2024 because what better way for the television academy and its broadcast partner to stay relevant than by potentially giving Jeremy Allen White the Best Comedy Actor award for “The Bear” Season 1 roughly 19 months after “The Bear” Season 1 premiered — all while he’s also winning honors for “The Bear” Season 2 at competing awards ceremonies? Good stuff. What I mean is that we could be typing about this week’s 2023 Emmy nominees for quite a while. Critics’ Conversation: Despite Heartening Inclusions, Emmy Voters Struggle to Broaden Their Horizons
Daniel Fienberg: The Television Academy has done it again! And I’m not sure I mean that as a compliment.
I’m happy to see two of my favorite comedies of the past year, Succession and The White Lotus, dominating the nominations. On the drama side.
And I’m glad to see Emmy voters finally recognized that my absolute favorite show of last year, Reservation Dogs, exists. Or exists enough to receive one nomination in the sound category.
And how nice that Emmy voters also noticed Dead Ringers. For cinematography. But somehow left Rachel Weisz out of the Lead Actress in a Limited Series category.
Once again, it was an Emmy nomination slate that suggests voters watch a half-dozen shows, which allows dozens more to slip through the cracks. Nowhere is that clearer than the supporting categories, where nearly every actor from The White Lotus got nominated (Nearly… sorry...

All of your favorite SAG Award-winning cast members from “The White Lotus” Season 2 are back in the awards conversation yet again, this time for the 2023 Emmys. The Emmy ballots were officially unveiled on the Television Academy’s website on June 15, the same day nominations-round voting began (it will conclude on June 26 at 10:00 p.m.), and 15 actors from HBO’s drama series have been submitted for Emmy consideration.
Top of the heap in terms of visibility is Jennifer Coolidge. The beloved actress won an Emmy last year for the first season of “The White Lotus” (back when it was still classified as a limited series) and then went on to prevail at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice and SAG Awards. This time around she’s competing in Best Drama Supporting Actress alongside six of her co-stars: Meghann Fahy, Beatrice Grannò, Sabrina Impacciatore, Aubrey Plaza, Haley Lu Richardson and Simona Tabasco.

How do you solve a problem like Peak TV? For TV viewers, living an era with hundreds of TV shows is pretty cool — the more choices, the merrier. But for the TV Academy and its members, it has presented a real dilemma: What is the most equitable way to approach Emmy voting when no voter can possibly have seen everything — or even a large share of everything — that’s out there?
In 2017, the TV Academy tried something that it thought might help to make things fairer. It ended its tradition of issuing nomination ballots with a fixed number of slots per category and instead began instructing members to nominate as many achievements in each category as “you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”
Over the past six years, however, the unintended byproduct of this type of voting has been that the Emmy acting categories have been utterly...

They say, “don’t meet your heroes.” And Morfydd Clark is taking that sentiment very seriously. In “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” Clark stars as Galadriel, who was originally played by Cate Blanchett in “The Lord of the Rings” movie franchise. And to this day, the actress admits she’s still terrified of actually meeting Blanchett.
Prior to season one, the Wales native was open about the fact that she did not want to speak with her predecessor before shooting the spin-off series in the hopes of making it her own. But even now that that missions has been accomplished, Clark continues to make an effort not to meet Blanchett, who she admires and describes as her “guiding light.”
“I kind of feel like [Cate] is kind of like a queen…I wouldn’t dare to approach,” Clark said during a recent appearance on WrapWomen’s “UnWrapped” Podcast.

Jennifer Coolidge’s open disdain for boating did nothing to dissuade The White Lotus creator Mike White from subjecting the actress to three days of queasy and often claustrophobic filming on a yacht anchored off the Sicilian coast. Her discomfort was his inspiration.
“She had such a bad time filming on the boat in the first season that I just imagined telling her, ‘Yeah, now your character is going to die on a boat,’ ” says White. “Maybe I’m sadistic or something, but I knew Jennifer’s reaction was going to make me laugh so hard.”
Typically, any mention of a hit drama eighty-sixing its star would be prefaced by a boldface “spoiler alert,” but even the most fleeting frames of the HBO series’ second season — say, for example, the chaotic wardrobe choices for Haley Lu Richardson’s Portia — became unavoidable pop culture events. For the second year in a row, Fox is not releasing a fall schedule ahead of its upfront presentation.
Fox did the same thing in 2022, opting instead to announce their content slate for the upcoming broadcast season but holding off on announcing a formal schedule until a later date. Last year, the move came as the network was still waiting on decisions on the dramas “9-1-1” and “The Resident.” But with the latter show canceled and the former moving to ABC, this year’s move comes as the writers’ strike enters its third week.
Networks like CBS and NBC have already announced their fall lineups, but whether or not any primetime scripted shows across all the networks debut as scheduled remains to be seen as the strike drags on.
“Obviously nobody wants this strike and our thoughts go out to the writers at the moment,” said Fox Entertainment CEO Rob Wade...

Fox Entertainment will have its new CEO, Rob Wade, making his debut at the network’s upfront presentation today. In a sign of continuity, he will unveil the Fox content slate for the 2023-2024 television season but not a schedule. The network first broke with tradition by not presenting a fall grid at the upfront last year; Fox announced fall schedule and premiere dates June 6.
The network did away with unveiling a fall schedule at its May 2022 presentation because, in media companies’ multi-platform pitch to advertisers, that does not have the importance and urgency it once did. That strategy is even more timely this year because of the uncertainty surrounding the networks’ fall schedules amid the ongoing WGA strike.

The MTV Movie and TV Awards crowned its 2023 winners on Sunday night sans its planned host, Drew Barrymore, who, ironically, took home the prize for Best Host for “The Drew Barrymore Show” — and accepted it live from her bathroom.
Jennifer Coolidge was thrilled to receive the Comedic Genius Award. “It’s even more special because I was in The Groundlings with Melissa McCarthy and Will Ferrell, so now I can be in the club with them and Sacha Baron Cohen and Kevin Hart and Jack Black,” she said in a clip. “My God, what a fun night!”

While the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards weren't held live on May 7, some of Hollywood's biggest stars still got their moment during the prerecorded show. In the lead-up to Sunday, the ceremony planned for Barker Hangar in Los Angeles was scrapped amid the Writers Guild of America strike. Host Drew Barrymore stepped back from the gig in support of the striking writers, and the decision to do without a red carpet closely followed. Heading into the weekend, it was confirmed that the event would not be held in its original form.
Still, big names accepted their popcorn trophies through video clips, including Tom Cruise, who was piloting a plane while expressing his gratitude for his win for best performance in a movie for "Top Gun: Maverick."

The MTV Movie & TV Awards faced a series of roadblocks this year due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. While the awards show was set to broadcast live on Sunday, it was announced that due to the strike, the network would air a pre-taped special as several attendees announced they were pulling out of the show.
“As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan first awards’ show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peaks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year,” said Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming and events at Paramount Global, and an...

Before Sabrina Impacciatore stole America’s heart in “The White Lotus” season 2, she was an already well-known comedy actress and gay icon in Italy. “Since I was 18, they decided that I was a queer icon,” Impacciatore shared during WrapWomen’s “UnWrapped” Podcast. They called me for every gay pride. I was the godmother, a Greek bride for every manifestation queer festival. I was always called, and I loved that.”
