Following the October parliamentary election that saw the defeat of the right-wing Law and Justice party and appointment of leader of the opposition party Donald Tusk as prime minister, Polish filmmakers are cautiously readying for change.
“So far, our cinema authorities have not changed. It remains to be seen whether they will change their approach to funding more topical or controversial projects. Recent years have been very difficult in this regard,” says acclaimed director Agnieszka Holland.
Holland’s latest film, refugee drama “Green Border,” had been attacked by the right-wing government last year. Her next film, “Franz,” about Franz Kafka, is a Czech-German-Polish co-production to be sold at EFM by Films Boutique.
“We know everything and nothing about Kafka. There are dozens of detailed biographies and the reasons for his growing importance remain a mystery. I am trying to put this film together like a scattered jigsaw puzzle,” she adds.

In the 1930s, the Polish port city of Gdynia became a brief landing pad for immigrants from neighboring countries, including Jews who sought safety and prosperity before the rise of Nazi Germany. Though the Museum of Gdynia quietly explains this messy history, obvious markers of that past aren’t visible across the city. Its marina boasts a massive monument to 18th-century Polish military hero Tadeusz Kościuszko, whose actions became the stuff of legend both for the Poles and the Americans, but otherwise Gdynia stands anew, with sparkling metallic structures surrounding its stretch of the Puck Bay and the Polanka Redłowska forest.
By contrast, in the nearby town of Gdańsk, with its brightly colored and narrow buildings that hug a labyrinthine waterway, the markers of history are more immediately apparent to the naked eye. Much of the buildings have been reconstructed such that nearly every street teems with homages to the past.

Call Her King is a fun, interesting cross-over of action thriller and political commentary. Specifically, commentary on the iniquities of the US Justice system and the ingrained discrimination faced daily by black people within it.
Basic set-up. Jaeda King (Naturi Turton) is, as the cliché goes, ‘young, gifted and black’. Also, a woman. So, you might expect her to be a ‘bleeding heart liberal’. But, no. For reasons that will become clear she is to be found on the side of the legal conservatives.
Jaeda is all set to hand down sentence in the case of Sean Samuels (Jason Mitchell), a young black man found guilty of multiple murders when… her courtroom is invaded by a bunch of ne’er-do-wells. That is, by a small army hired by Sean’s brother, Gabriel (Lance Goss) – aka ‘Black Caesar’ – with the aim of springing Sean.
Jaeda, however, escapes, taking with her Sean and a couple.

There are a lot ways to describe “Zola,” the scandalously intoxicating mad-dog erotic-underworld drama with a title that doesn’t tell you much about it. It’s a true story so extravagant it feels like it must have been made up. It’s a mini volcano of sex and violence and danger and deception. It’s a close-to-the-bone portrait of women who work in the sex industry. It’s a youthquake as real as “American Honey.” It’s a piece of pure filmmaking bravura.
The movie first played at Sundance in 2020, and the reason it’s just coming out now is that it’s one of the rare independent films that was treated by its distributor — in this case, A24 — as a made-for-the-big-screen jewel, like “No Time to Die” or “West Side Story,” whose release would have to wait until we could start to see the post-pandemic theatrical landscape. “Zola...

A24 has released the official trailer for “Zola,” which will release theatrically on June 30.
Based on the infamous Twitter thread posted by A’Ziah Wells King, the film follows a Detroit waitress named Zola (Taylour Paige) who strikes up a new friendship with a customer, Stefani (Riley Keough), who convinces her to join a weekend of dancing and partying in Florida. What at first seems like a glamorous trip full of “hoeism” rapidly transforms into a 48-hour journey involving a nameless pimp, an idiot boyfriend, some Tampa gangsters and other unexpected adventures.
“Zola” made its worldwide premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020. The Demos album will come on April 30th digitally and on vinyl and CD — along with an LP reissue of the original Uh Huh Her record.

Do you get the feeling that some actors forget that they’re part of a movie and get a little lost at times? As Kevin Burwick of MovieWeb reminds us, Jason Mitchell played the role of Eazy-e in 2015’s Straight Outta Compton in a way that a lot of people won’t soon forget, but this current weapons and drug charge are making it appear that the actor might have thought that the life was a little too appealing to give up. Just recently he was pulled over and found to be in the possession of an Ak-47 and a Glock 19

Jason Mitchell, who you may know from his roles in Kong: Skull Island and Straight Outta Compton, was arrested in Mississippi on Wednesday on four felony drug and weapons charges, according to law enforcement. Mitchell portrayed Eazy-e in the 2015 N.W.A. biopic and showed up as Mills in Skull Island.
After being stopped by Harrison County police, the officers found an Ak-47 semi-automatic and a Glock 19 pistol. In addition to the weapons, they found two pounds of marijuana and 1,300 doses of Mdma. The official charges are possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and two counts of possession of a weapon by a felon.
“The weed and ecstasy were packaged in a manner consistent with a mid-level distribution operation,” said police.
Meanwhile, a representative for Mitchell released a statement on the matter, explaining:
“Jason is at home with his family right now, working on an amazing new project.

“Hunters,” the new Amazon Prime series about vigilante Nazi hunters in the 1970s, is an example of historical fiction: meaning it’s not a true story, but it uses real historical events as a backdrop. So, for example, midway through the first season there’s a citywide blackout in New York — this was a real thing that happened in 1997, but in the show it had a different cause.
“Hunters” is full of things like that, taking real bits of history and recontextualizing them for the story being told. That blackout, for one, is part of a Nazi plan in the show, rather than just being an accident like it was in real life. And, of course, another example of such a thing is the United States government sweeping up a bunch of prominent Nazis after World War II and giving them important jobs in America.

Netflix has unleashed the trailer for its latest comedy series aimed at teens and nostalgic adults, and it’s called “I Am Not Okay With This.” Based on a 2017 graphic novel by Charles Forsman, the series comes from the director/executive producer of Netflix cult favorite “The End of the F***ing World,” Jonathan Entwistle, and producers on the streamer’s wildly popular “Stranger Things,” a vibe that “I Am Not Okay With This” is clearly grooving to. And as a kind of superhero origin story set among grade-schoolers coming into puberty, it’s got a John Hughes vibe, also. Check it out below.
