After 2023’s earlier surprise comedic family gem You Are Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah, Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions have done it again for Netflix, this time in the delightful and remarkably wise CGI animated feature Leo. It is a charmer for kids and their parents who get a few lessons here along the way as well.
Sandler voices 74-year-old Iguana, Leo, as if he were about to take the lectern at a Friar’s Roast. Leo has lived his whole life on display in a fifth grade classroom with revolving groups of kids since the 1940s. Next to him is Bff Squirtle, a fast talking turtle voiced memorably by Bill Burr. They are kind of the Bert and Ernie of the classroom, talking only to each other, and never revealing to the kids or teachers that they can actually converse with humans too. Leo, for whatever reason,...

“Leo” is a movie produced by Happy Madison Productions, which, as you may already know, is Adam Sandler‘s production company.
“Leo” embodies Sandler’s peculiar sense of humor, this time in a movie specifically designed for young ones, starring Leo, a 74-year-old talking lizard.
And if you haven’t guessed it already, it’s Adam Sandler himself who lends his voice to the lizard.
Leo Movie Review
“Leo” is one of those movies that have been created and designed with a clear purpose: to appeal to everyone. It is a product that aims to be enjoyable for all, easy to watch, and that, with a careful balance of humor, sentimentality, and catchy songs, will please the audience throughout the film’s hour and a half duration.

Leo, the upcoming animated film on Netflix, sets high expectations as its stunning animation, thoughtful yet hilarious storyline and star-studded voice cast promise a great cinematic experience for audiences worldwide. Directed by David Wachtenheim, Robert Marianetti, and Robert Smigel, Netflix is all set to release Leo, featuring Adam Sandler, Bill Burr, and Cecily Strong as voice artists. An aging lizard named Leo is the protagonist of the story, which follows his journey to finding freedom and making friends along the way. The major dilemma of the story revolves around whether Leo will eventually achieve freedom, or he will discover freedom through connections with humans.
Leo shares thematic similarities with animated classics like Up, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and Monsters, Inc. by exploring friendship, adventure, and self-discovery. Like Carl in Up, Leo goes on an unexpected journey, almost like the Toy Story series. Not only that, but Leo’s journey to...

‘Leo’ Review: Adam Sandler Plays a Literal Teacher’s Pet in Winning Toon From the ‘TV Funhouse’ Team
“Perhaps if people talked less, animals would talk more,” observes one of the human characters in “Charlotte’s Web,” a kiddie classic that serves as both the butt of several jokes and an inspiration for Adam Sandler’s animated “Leo,” an endearing Netflix original that strikes just the right balance between heart and fart jokes.
Basing the way Leo sounds on his squeaky-scratchy, slightly guttural impression of the late Hollywood agent Bernie Brillstein, Sandler voices a crusty old iguana who’s spent three-quarters of a century — practically his entire life — trapped in an elementary school classroom. Leo’s wisdom is largely limited to what’s taught in fifth grade, though he’s observed enough kids over his 74 years that the lizard reckons he’s qualified to advise this crop. Truth be told, he’s cheaper and more consistently helpful than your typical child psychologist.

The lessons in Netflix’s new animated coming-of-age musical Leo might be clichéd, but they are presented with enough heart to turn even the most cynical viewers into fans of the titular reptile.
Leo, voiced by Adam Sandler, is a lizard, and he’s lived in the same classroom for nearly 80 years. Hundreds of fifth-graders have walked through the halls of Fort Myer Elementary School, so there’s not much Leo hasn’t seen when it comes to angsty preteens and their anxious parents. Their aesthetics and preoccupations have changed — the most recent class of students are glued to their phones and no longer sporting mohawks — but their problems are largely the same. From his tank, which he shares with a turtle named Squirtle (Bill Burr), Leo observes each new batch of kids with a distant curiosity.
All of that shifts when Leo overhears an adult during parent-teacher conferences remarking on his age.

It’s a cool indie weekend when the new album by André 3000, New Blue Sun, has morphed into a “cinematic listening experience.” Variance Films is putting the experience, directed by Terence Nance, into three theaters in NYC (IFC Center), LA (Cinepolis Inglewood) and Atlanta (Tara).
Right now, it’s just those locations but after this weekend, “We will see what happens, where the wind takes us,” said Variance CEO Dylan Marchetti. “I swear, I wanted to make a ‘visual album’ but this is literally the way the wind blew me this time,” André has said.
Asked what’s is on the screen, Marchetti said, “Vibes.”
New Blue Sun, out today, is André’s debut solo album, his first full-length LP since his group Outkast released its last record 17 years ago. He described it as “an entirely instrumental album centered around woodwinds; a celebratory piece of work in the form of a living,...

At a comedy show on Wednesday, actor Adam Sandler paused his performance to make sure an audience member was okay.
In a video captured by a fan, Sandler pointed the medical personnel to the person from the stage. He directed, “Okay, here we go – oh wait up guys, right down there. On the left. Let’s go.”
Medical staff made their way into the audience with a stretcher in tow. “Alright, let’s get there, y’all. Everything should be alright. Alright, alright, alright…. We’ll be a few minutes, guys,” Sandler said.
He told the crowd, “Let’s take a few seconds, we’ll just let these guys concentrate, alright? Love y’all.”
Once sure that the audience member had received the appropriate care he needed, Sandler said, “We’re all wishing you well there, youngster, feel better back there. Sorry about that… I hope everybody’s good, everybody’s alright.

If you’ve ever wanted to see Adam Sandler play a septuagenarian talking lizard, then Netflix’s new Leo trailer is for you. Check out the preview of the animated musical comedy ahead of its November 21st release date below.
In the film, Sandler stars as the titular 74-year-old lizard, who has shared a terrarium with a turtle named Squirtle (Bill Burr) in the same Florida classroom for decades. After learning he only has a year left to live, the jaded pet plots an escape to the outside world, but ends up bonding with the students in this year’s class instead after they find out he can talk. “This is a tough time, but these are the best years,” he tells one student.
Leo was directed by Robert Marianetti, David Wachtenheim, and Saturday Night Live alum Robert Smigel, the latter of whom co-wrote the movie with Sandler and Paul Sado.

"Saturday Night Live" vet and comedy movie icon Adam Sandler and his wife Jackie Sandler are all about the movies. The two met on the set of his 1999 film "Big Daddy" and since then, Jackie has continued to have roles in many of Adam's films. Better yet, Adam and Jackie's two daughters, Sadie and Sunny, are in the business too, and their star power has only grown through the years.
Adam's daughters started out in the business with bit parts in his films, including those that his production company, Happy Madison, produced that he was not in. For example, they were both in "The Wrong Missy" on Netflix alongside Jackie. But they took center stage in the new Netflix teen comedy "You're So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah" that hit the streamer on Aug. 25. When it was announced that both Sunny and Sadie Sandler would be appearing in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah starring and produced by their dad, Adam Sandler, calls of the dreaded and often nasty “nepo baby” phrase made the waves. Now, with the movie proving quite successful on Netflix, director Sammi Cohen is working to silence any critics of the Sandman, saying he’s been doing a similar thing for most of his career anyway.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah director Cohen suggested that anyone who continues to claim that Sunny and Sadie – who are 14 and 17, respectively, and have had numerous bit parts in Sandler’s movies – hasn’t had their eyes open. “Sandler has a reputation for making movies with his friends, and that’s something we all want to do. Since 1989, Adam Sandler has been one of the busiest men in Hollywood. Not only is he a prolific funnyman on screen, but he's also got his own production company, Happy Madison, that has cranked out over 25 feature films. Sandler inked a lucrative exclusivity deal with Netflix a few years back and has been churning out films for them to varying degrees of success.
Sure, Sandler has made some sophomoric films, and many include questionable casting choices/characterizations that don't hold up in our contemporary culture (like every role Rob Schneider has ever played), but he's also been unfairly used as a punching bag by snobbish cinephiles despite the overwhelming evidence that he's a comedic genius. When he won Best Male Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards following his egregious Oscars snub for "Uncut Gems," his acceptance speech included the now-viral line, "I'd also like to give a shout-out to my fellow nominees,...

Adam Sandler is known for having released crowd-pleasing comedies for decades, but it’s Sammi Cohen — director of the new Netflix feature You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah — who has the distinction of helming the actor’s best-reviewed film, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
Released Friday, My Bat Mitzvah is a Sandler family affair, with Sandler playing Danny Friedman, father to daughters Stacy (Sunny Sandler) and Ronnie (Sadie Sandler), who are portrayed by Adam Sandler’s real-life teen children. Adapting Fiona Rosenbloom’s 2005 novel of the same name and focusing on Stacy and best friend Lydia (Samantha Lorraine) — whose bat mitzvah plans fall apart over their mutual interest in a popular boy — the movie also includes Adam Sandler’s real-life wife Jackie Sandler as Lydia’s mom, in addition to Idina Menzel as mother to Stacy and Ronnie.

Adam Sandler drew raves for his performance in “Uncut Gems,” but his latest Netflix movie, “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah,” has so far gotten even better critics’ reviews, as well as raves for his youngest daughter, Sunny.
As of Monday afternoon, the family comedy, which co-stars his daughters, had a 96% positive ratings from critics, while the 2019 Safdie Brothers drama sits at 91%.
Audiences, at 66% positive, were less gung-ho about the Sammi Cohen-directed comedy, which premiered Aug. 25 on the streamer.
Critics are saying, essentially, “hurrah for nepotism” about Sandler’s daughter Sunny, who stars as Stacy Friedman who clashes with her Bff (Samantha Lorraine) right before their respective bat mitzvahs.
Sunny’s real-life sister Sadie Sandler plays her older sister, Ronnie, while former “Saturday Night Live” regular who also produced,” plays their father in role with limited screen time. Jackie Sandler, their real mother, also appears in the film,...

We all know that Adam Sandler likes working with people he knows. The movies he produces with his production company Happy Madison regularly feature Kevin Nealon, Rob Schneider, and other cast members from his Saturday Night Live days. Many of his movies also feature supporting turns from guys you only see in Happy Madison flicks, like Alan Covert and Peter Dante. And, of course, he loves to cast Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore as his love interests.
So it’s no surprise that Sandler’s latest Netflix movie You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzah sees him once again paired with Idina Menzel, who played his wife in Uncut Gems. When you’re 13 everything carries high stakes: friendships, romances, who you’re seen with, which parties you’re invited to. Nothing has an adequate frame of reference, because everything is so new, and you’re not sure if you’re supposed to handle it all like the kid you just were or the adult you want to be. The new Netflix coming-of-age comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah manages to convey this liminal state in a way that’s both deeply thoughtful and light as a feather.

Adam Sandler and daughters score a surprising win for Netflix: a sweet-natured adaptation of Fiona Rosenbloom’s teen novel
I’m as keen as the next person to roll my eyes at so-called nepo babies, but You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, a new Netflix teen comedy starring Adam Sandler and his two teenage daughters, makes the case for some upsides to maintaining the family business. Sadie Sandler as Ronnie, the sardonic older sister who can drive, and Sunny Sandler as Stacy Friedman, a 13-year-old struggling with her first crush, first Bff fight and one and only batmitzvah, are clearly actors in training. But the Sandlers’ affectionate rapport and palpable family chemistry lends the film, based on the book by Fiona Rosenbloom, a rare, sweet charm.

But the Sandlers’ affectionate rapport and palpable family chemistry lends the film, based on the book by Fiona Rosenbloom, a rare, sweet charm.

Adam Sandler long ago perfected the art of working with his friends. So what’s next? Now, he’s taking that same approach of working with people he already knows and loves to generate a platform, through his Happy Madison production shingle and streaming giant Netflix, for his own daughters Sunny and Sadie Sandler to shine.
Is it still nepotism if it’s this blatant? Probably — but in an added twist, Sandler’s choice to bolster his daughters comes with a pleasant surprise: it works, and well.
Directed by Sammi Cohen, this new entry in the Sandler-family-business model, “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah” is an endearing take on the coming-of-age tween film, with a heavy dose of religion — in the best way. Sunny Sandler stars as Stacy, a sweet 13-year-old who dreams of a blow-out bash bat mitzvah, one heavy on the New York City influences and Lmfao bangers,...

Let’s clarify that…Adam Sandler isn’t a lizard. Rather, Sandler voices a lizard with big dreams of escaping his ordinary life as a classroom pet in the animated musical comedy Leo.

Jackie Sandler, Heidi Gardner, Robert Smigel, Nick Swardson, Stephanie Hsu, and Nicholas Turturro also lend their voices to the family-friendly film.
Robert Marianetti, Robert Smigel, and David Wachtenheim directed from a screenplay by Smigel, Adam Sandler, and Paul Sado. Geoff Zanelli composed the original score.

Netflix has released the first trailer for its upcoming animated movie musical Leo, which sees the actor and comedian re-teaming with his daughters Sadie and Sunny in a film about an aging class pet who discovers he has just one year left to live.
Produced by Happy Madison and directed by Robert Marianetti, Robert Smigel and David Wachtenheim, Leo follows Sandler’s 74-year-old lizard who learns he doesn’t have much time left. As his Florida elementary school students prepare for their last year, Leo follows suit, deciding that his last year will be spent differently than his previous decades with terrarium-mate turtle (Bill Burr).
“I got a feeling this year’s gonna be different,” Leo says in the nearly minute-and-a-half first look. “Something big is going to happen.”

Review: The latest Happy Madison production for Netflix is a family affair with Adam Sandler producing and co-starring in a production led by a cast featuring his daughters, Sunny and Sadie, and his wife, Jackie. Based on the best-selling young adult novel You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah could easily have been written off as a nepotism project for the Sandler clan. But, with a heartfelt message and a theme reminiscent of classic Judy Blume, the film works far better than it has any right to. Sure, it has a few requisite moments of bathroom humor, as any Adam Sandler project is bound to feature, but You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah...

“Back to school. Back to school. Back to school.” It’s the end of the summer, and many are singing the back-to-school song that Adam Sandler once sang in his beloved classic, Billy Madison. Even Adam Sandler. Netflix has released the trailer for their newest animated original for the whole family, Leo. Sandler plays the titular Leo — the class pet lizard. Joining Sandler in an against-type of role is comedian Bill Burr, whose normal profanity-laced humor takes a break in lieu of family-friendly comedy. Here, Burr plays the class pet turtle who shares the terrarium with Leo.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads,

"This year's gonna be different, something big's gonna happen..." Netflix has revealed a funny teaser trailer for animated movie called Leo, arriving for streaming this fall. This is a Happy Madison production from Adam Sandler for Netflix, but it's also a sneaky TV Funhouse presentation from "SNL". Comedian Robert Smigel co-wrote and co-directed this film with his fellow animators from SNL - Robert Marianetti & David Wachtenheim. Jaded 74-year-old lizard Leo has been stuck in the same Florida classroom for decades with his terrarium-mate turtle. When he learns he only has one year left to live, he plans to escape to experience life on the outside. Adam Sandler voices Leo, and they even animated him to look like Sandler, which is hilarious. The movie's voice cast includes Bill Burr, Cecily Strong, Jason Alexander, Sadie Sandler, Sunny Sandler, Rob Schneider, Jo Koy, Jackie Sandler, Heidi Gardner, Robert Smigel, Nick Swardson, Stephanie Hsu,...

Throughout Adam Sandler's deeply wide-ranging career, the talented actor has delivered some pretty wild performances that have ping-ponged from one extreme to the other. After his run through the '90s and early aughts included hits like "Happy Gilmore," "The Wedding Singer," and especially "Punch-Drunk Love," he more or less lapsed into autopilot mode with several undemanding comedies before roaring back to life with "Sandy Wexler," "The Meyerowitz Stories," and "Uncut Gems." Well, now audiences are about to see Sandler as they never have before: as a lizard.
Netflix's "Leo" might seem like yet another unrefined streaming comedy aimed at the lowest common denominator, but the premise of Sandler voicing an aged class pet who's suffered through countless boring and monotonous school years performing for the amusement of obnoxious kids kind of sounds ... intriguing! Adam Sandler stars in a Netflix movie of a different sort in the first teaser trailer for the original animated film “Leo,” which he also co-wrote with longtime collaborator Robert Smigel.
Described as a “coming-of-age musical comedy,” Sandler voices a 74-year-old lizard who’s been stuck in the same Florida classroom for decades. When he discovers he only has one year left to live (grim stuff!), he plots an escape — only to get “caught up in the problems of his anxious students.”
The animated film was directed by the trio of Robert Marianetti, Robert Smigel and David Wachtenheim. The screenplay was written by Robert Smigel, Adam Sandler, Paul Sado. “Leo” was produced by Happy Madison.
“Leo” will be streaming on Netflix on Nov. 21, just in time for Thanksgiving.
Along with Sandler and Burr, the film also features the voices of Cecily Strong, Jason Alexander, Rob Schneider, Sadie Sandler, Sunny Sandler,...

When you look at Adam Sandler’s filmography, you might either think outrageous comedy or some seriously impressive dramatic turns in movies like Punch Drunk Love, Uncut Gems and Hustle. But for his latest Netflix flick, he is taking a back seat on camera by basically playing the beleaguered dad to his real-life daughters Sadie and Sunny Sandler, all in fictionalized roles but nevertheless all still in the family. Sandler’s real influence in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is as a producer, and in this instance he has brought forward the right creative elements to make this adaptation of Fiona Rosenbloom’s YA book a complete delight.
It doesn’t break any rules of the teen genre, of the kind of coming-of-age movie that the late great John Hughes pioneered so successfully in the 1980s and ’90s, but it works in a modernized way that...

You have to give Adam Sandler props for being a very good family man. When he wants to spend time with his wife and children, he doesn’t just take them on vacation, he makes movies with them. And sometimes both at the same time. He’s outdone himself with his latest effort for Netflix, Sammi Cohen’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, based on Fiona Rosenbloom’s 2005 YA novel and featuring his daughter Sunny Sandler in the lead role, along with her older sister Sadie Sandler, her mother Jackie Sandler and her father Adam in supporting turns. It seems less a movie than a family project.
Fortunately, the rampant nepotism on display has resulted in a sweet, amusing film geared toward younger audiences, who will best relate to the main character’s personal travails as she prepares for the film’s main event. (And as they say,...
