Julio Torres is back with a new HBO series called Fantasmas, bringing a unique touch to the comedy scene. Known for his earlier work on Los Espookys, Torres dives into familiar themes while also pushing new boundaries. As he said, I really loved the idea of telling short stories and having a show of vignettes. This new venture, which premiered on June 7th, charms its audience with unabashed eccentricity and depth. An Intriguing Plot Unfolds The six-episode series stars Torres as a fictional version of himself, navigating a dreamlike New York while searching for a lost earring shaped like a...

Looking at the bright colors, elaborate costumes and lush sets of “Fantasmas,” you would be forgiven for thinking the inspiration for Julio Torres‘ latest HBO comedy is more joyful than it actually is.
“Thinking about the world and thinking about the kinds of people I wanted to have in the show, this common thread of feeling alienated and feeling a little lonely kept coming up,” Torres told TheWrap. “I wrote down all of the stories I wanted to tell, saw the common denominator and allowed that to inform the through-line of the story and the overarching world of it.”
Torres originally sold his latest comedy in 2020. However, thanks to the “bottleneck of the pandemic” and the creator’s work on other projects such as his film “Problemista” — which he wrote and directed — the series was delayed.
“I feel like doing work in this industry feels like a burst,” Torres said.

Julio Torres’ new HBO series Fantasmas takes its name from the Spanish word for “ghosts,” which Torres’ fictionalized alter ego wants to use for a clear crayon. When a Crayola executive asks why anyone would want such a thing, Julio argues, “Some things aren’t the normal colors, or play by the rules of the rainbow.”
Torres himself has no interest in normal colors, whether in his movie Problemista or his previous HBO show, the surreal supernatural buddy comedy Los Espookys. He can look at ridiculous things and treat them with intense seriousness,...

As a writer for “Saturday Night Live” from 2016 to 2019, Julio Torres was able to create immersive worlds — the existential melancholy of a sink; the font obsession of an “Avatar” super fan — in just a few minutes’ worth of sketch. Over time, the comedian has only acquired more space and resources to realize his singular vision. Since 2019, Torres has co-created and co-starred in the surreal sitcom “Los Espookys”; recorded the hourlong special “My Favorite Shapes”; and directed his feature debut, “Problemista,” acting opposite Tilda Swinton. With every added level of authority, Torres has assumed even greater control of the ultra-specific sensibility evident in his earliest “SNL” breakouts. Torres’ imagination yields glamorous, distinctly queer realities with the logic of a fairy tale, grounded by the bemused frustration of an author who had to traverse the American immigration system to bring his dreamy art to life.

One of the more commonly overused words in entertainment marketing is “visionary.”
Whether or not a single consumer has ever watched a film or TV show because of an unsourced studio claim that the alleged auteur behind it was a “visionary,” the frequency with which the term is applied appropriately is very low. Wanna call Wes Anderson a visionary? Sure. Even people who hate the guy can’t deny the singularity of his approach. But just as frequently it’s tossed in the direction of, say, a guy whose vision was making a commercial with Antonio Banderas as a bee who hates snot. There needs to be a more thorough “visionary” vetting process.
That being said: Julio Torres is a visionary.

Ryan Gosling is making the dreams of “Saturday Night Live” writers come true.
In addition to reprising his iconic role for a sequel to skit “Papyrus,” penned by Julio Torres, it’s now been revealed that Gosling’s viral “Beavis and Butt-Head” sketch was a shelved idea from 2018, with Jonah Hill originally being set to portray one half of the cartoon-character duo.
“SNL” hair stylist Jodi Mancuso and makeup artist Louie Zakarian both told The Ankler that the skit was originally pitched when Jonah Hill was hosting a Season 44 episode in November 2018. However, it was canceled due to challenges with the necessary prosthetics.
“Even at that time it was late coming into the show, so there wasn’t a lot of prep time and I wasn’t fully happy with the wigs,” Mancuso said. “Then I think we tried it again, and again I wasn’t happy with it. So...

We put another season with the Intelligence Unit behind us.
Unfortunately, Chicago Pd Season 11 was not exempt from the Dual-Strike effect on the writing of many of our favorite series.
The return has been rough, something we've acknowledged and lamented as our favorite series couldn't quite transition back into truncated seasons with ease.
Chicago Pd, like many other series, fell into the same bad habits of trying to cram too much content into a shortened season, dropping storylines, or sidelining characters.
And as One Chicago fans, in particular, know, the cast cutbacks that have resulted in less screen time for many of our favorite characters were more pronounced than ever during this season.
The rotating centrics also proved more tiresome and frustrating than ever during the season.

When Los Espookys was cancelled in 2022, a chorus of disappointment rang out through the industry and from fans of the beloved show. It was the kind of news that threatened a certain sense of disillusionment, but unbeknownst to its fans at the time, creator Julio Torres had a lot up his sleeve. The writer, who first became known for his work on Saturday Night Live digital shorts like “Papyrus” and “The Actress,” was already hard at work on his first feature film and a new series. Problemista hit theaters this spring, and the new series became Fantasmas, which will open Atx TV Festival on May 30 before premiering on Max June 7.

NCIS is the TV show that started the trend of projects about NCIS as an independent law enforcement. The project became so popular that it spawned a number of spin-offs.
It's no secret that actors in popular television shows receive substantial paychecks, and if you're interested in specific figures for the main stars of NCIS who are still in the project or have already left it, you can find them here.
5. Wilmer Valderrama as Nicholas Torres — $100,000
Nick appeared in the premiere episode of season 14, replacing fan favorite Tony Dinozzo. He returned to D.C. to bring the person responsible for his brother-in-law's death to justice. At first, Nick seemed too hot-tempered, but over time he joined the team and became an integral part of it.
Wilmer Valderrama, who plays Torres, earns about $100,000 per episode.
4. David McCallum as Dr. Donald Mallard — $175,000

Exclusive: Out of the Cannes market, Sony Pictures Classics has bought North American rights and a raft of international territories on Walter Salles’ anticipated first narrative feature in more than a decade: I’m Still Here.
In I’m Still Here, the acclaimed Brazilian filmmaker, known for critical hits such as Oscar nominee Central Station and The Motorcycle Diaries, has tackled the emotional and powerful true story of a woman who is forced into activism after her husband is captured by the military regime in Brazil in the 1960s.
The film reunites Salles with his Oscar-nominated Central Station star Fernanda Montenegro, one of Brazil’s most acclaimed actors, and her daughter Fernanda Torres, with whom the filmmaker has worked multiple times. It also reunites the filmmaker with SPC who previously released 1998 hit Central Station, which won the Berlin Golden Bear and was also nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. "Gilmore Girls" is known as one of the most rewatchable comfort shows of the aughts. It's beloved for its mile-a-minute dialogue, surreally perfect small-town setting, and a warm central relationship that's held together via the power of mom-daughter love and a shared fondness for junk food and pop culture. It's that last part that makes one of the show's own pop culture connections especially ironic: Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory (Alexis Bledel) love classic TV, but they're blissfully unaware that they're living with two stars of one of the most talked-about early sitcoms.
The pair live next door to a woman named Babette, a true eccentric who's as adorable as she is overbearing. Babette often says whatever comes to mind in her signature raspy voice, and she brings a sort of benevolent chaos to the series that counters some of Stars Hollows' more genuinely annoying characters. "I can feel the inner lives of shapes and colors and sounds and numbers..." Wow that's strange. Max has revealed an official trailer for a wacky comedy series called Fantasmas, streaming this June. It's the latest creation of comedian / writer / actor Julio Torres, who stars in, writes, directs this series after releasing his Problemista film with A24 last year. Fantasmas translates directly to "ghosts" in Spanish, though this series is actually about a golden oyster, or dreams, or other weird things. Torres explores the peculiar world of folktales with a "fresh and unique twist on the classic tale of the lost golden oyster." Ever since he was struck by lightning as a child, he has seen the world in a different light. After experiencing weird dreams, Julio decides to embark on a journey through a surreal, alternate version of New York City. The series stars Torres with Martine Gutierrez, Tomas Matos,...

Julio Torres is stepping into a very literal and gender-swapped “Girl With a Pearl Earring” rendition for HBO.
The “Los Espookys” creator is back at the network with new surreal series “Fantasmas,” which he created, directed, and stars in. The series debuted at the Atx TV Festival earlier this year.
Torres plays a fictionalized version of himself as he tries to uncover a lost gold oyster earring. In his search to find the precious object, Torres’ character Julio reflects on the offbeat folks he encounters in introspective, eerie, and comedic vignettes set in a dreamy, alternate version of New York City. The surreal series is billed as a “fantastical six-part tale” that is a “kaleidoscope of color” to “weave together stories of people looking for meaning, purpose, and connection in an increasingly isolating world.”
In addition to Torres, the cast includes Martine Gutierrez, Tomas Matos, and Joe Rumrill as the voice of Bibo.

Magnify has acquired global and U.S. sales rights (excluding Canada and Benelux) to “Wildhood” director Bretten Hannam’s supernatural thriller “Place of Ghosts,” which is set to go into production in August 2024.
Lorna Lee Torres, Magnify’s senior VP of sales, and Austin Kennedy, director of global sales, will be launching the project in Cannes.
In the film, estranged siblings Mise’l and Antle are forced to reunite after being visited by a vengeful spirit. They venture into the “Place of Ghosts,” a primeval forest of the Mi’kmaq people where time and memory blend together. As they journey deeper into the forest, the dark spirit continues to grow, manifesting in terrifying forms that the siblings must confront.
“Bretten Hannam has crafted an ambitious and thematically rich indigenous horror/fantasy that engages with political and social history and adds to the expanding world of original genre film,” Torres said.

Was that for real?
Is Jessica Knight out the door as it appeared after NCIS Season 21 Episode 10?
And did the only intrateam romance in the current NCIS franchise go with her?
It's been a wacky season for TV as the networks slash and cut, then slash some more following the new writers' and actors' contracts.
And it is conceivable that Katrina Law wanted out. She joined the Hawaii Five-0 cast for what turned out to be its 10th and final season, with its cancellation a surprise to many. Maybe she wanted to get a jump this time, in case Season 22 is it for NCIS.
That's not out of the realm of possibility. After all, the show's favorite characters are still featured on CBS/Paramount+, with NCIS: Origins (young Gibbs), and the unnamed Tony and Ziva project. Why pay for the Mother Ship as well?
Also, it's not unusual to have surprise departures on NCIS finales,...

The Chicago P.D. hiatus ended with a new episode on Wednesday night.
When we last saw the show, Dante Torres was finishing up an undercover case to bring down a drug boss, Rafel Perez (Julio Cedillo).
During that case, Torres became romantically involved with the wife of Rafel Perez, Gloria Perez (Yara Martinez).
In a dramatic conclusion, Gloria killed Rafel. Rather than run, she told Torres she was remaining in Chicago. It could mean the story circles back later.
Also, earlier this season, the Chicago P.D. cast added actress Bojana Novakovic as Detective Josephine Petrovic. The quirky detective helped Intelligence on several cases, but Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) became suspicious of her and discovered a drinking problem.
A serial killer also remained on the loose, but this new episode was focused on a separate case.

There is still so much we don't know about Hailey Upton.
The series has a way of sprinkling little tidbits about its characters into installments, but they can still go years being as enigmatic as the day we first met them.
And with a few installments remaining before the character departs, Chicago Pd Season 11 Episode 10 provided some insight into her background, unlike anything we've seen before.
Regardless of how one may feel about the character, it was genuinely nice to have it, particularly during an hour with such a strong and riveting case.
The personal character exploration through a great case was at its best. They essentially balanced the Hailey and Ruthie/Hope situation well, with the most daunting aspect of the hour being how they shoehorned Petrovic into the mix.
By now, whether we love or loathe them, the character-centric installments that result in many characters benched or flat-out...

Julio Torres is crediting Ryan Gosling for being a “world-builder” of a comedic actor.
The “Problemista” writer/director/star told Entertainment Weekly that Gosling had more than a few sketch ideas when he returned to host “SNL.” Torres previously worked as a “Saturday Night Live” writer, and also returned with a skit per Gosling’s request to follow-up their viral “Papyrus” sequence parodying the font used in James Cameron’s “Avatar.” And much like the “Avatar” franchise itself, Gosling had a vision for making multiple installments of the “Papyrus” sketch.
“With no Ryan Gosling, there’s no ‘Papyrus 1,’ and there’s no ‘Papyrus 2,’” Torres said. “The first one was this sort of throwaway joke I made that he really latched on to. He was like, ‘Oh, I think maybe there’s an idea there,’ and I was like, ‘I really don’t think so.’ I didn’t tell him that,...

The strike-shortened NCIS Season 21 is coming to an end. The penultimate episode is Episode 9, entitled “Prime Cut.” The team is headed down to Texas. There, they just want to talk to the suspected killer in the death of a Marine captain. What kind of trouble could the team get into down there? It looks like there will be plenty of trouble in the CBS military procedural series.
Here are the details of the episode entitled “Prime Cut.”

While fans are desperately waiting to finally see Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson embrace his new look as the Captain in his upcoming solo movie Captain America 4, they aren’t too sure about Danny Ramirez’s beloved character Joaquín Torres. In fact, if anything, they are deeply worried about the latter’s character in the movie after recent updates about Captain America: Brave New World.
Captain America: Brave New World (2025) | Marvel Studios
A major reason behind this reaction from fans is the superhero costume that Ramirez would be sporting in the film after his character replaced Wilson to become the new Falcon. And as much as they hate to admit it, seeing him in his new look has fans feeling that he looks more like the Vulture from the Spider-Man saga than anywhere close to how perfect Wilson looked as the superhero.

Thankfully, we survived another frustrating hiatus.
It feels like it's been forever since Chicago Pd was on our screens, and the hiatuses have been frustrating.
But alas, Chicago Pd Season 11 Episode 10 is coming in hot with a ... spins wheel ... Hailey Upton installment.
By now, we're accustomed to the character-centric focus. We don't have to care for it, but we're used to it.
Despite annoyance about the formatting, the midseason premiere may feature most of the team.
Given that it has been a while since Chicago Pd Season 11 Episode 9, a refresher may be necessary.
"Somos Uno" was the rather abrupt and severely underwhelming conclusion to Dante Torres' storyline with the cartel wife.
While his canoodling with Gloria was a shocking development that arose when introduced, the storyline got shoved out of sight until it resurfaced and wrapped up abruptly, making many of us wonder about the necessity of it in the first place.

Leonel Moreno, the Venezuelan migrant and TikTok influencer, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) in Ohio after being a fugitive for two years.
Ice records reveal that the agency picked up Moreno, who is being held at Geauga County Jail.
He had been hunted by Ice ever since he crossed the border illegally at Eagle Pass, Texas, in April 2022.
The fugitive had been released as part of the Alternatives to Detention Program, which allows migrants on parole to go free while officials track them until their next court date. Moreno was due in Miami court in November 2022 but never showed up.
He made headlines recently after sharing tips on invading vacant homes and living off the United States government on his TikTok account @leitooficial_25, which had over 500,000 followers before it was suspended.
The videos led Ice to his whereabouts after he proved himself challenging to find.

Hey, "Chicago P.D." fans. Unfortunately, it's time to serve up some bad news again. Yeah, it turns out that NBC is setting new episodes of Chicago Pd aside for a couple of weeks. So, they aren't airing the next, new episode 10 of this current season 11 tonight, April 10, 2024, Wednesday night, April 17, 2024 and Wednesday night, April 24, 2024. Yeah, we're hearing from one of our sources that NBC doesn't plan to air the new episode 10 until Wednesday night, May 1, 2024 in its usual, 9 pm central standard time slot. So, certainly be sure to commit that important date and time to memory if you can. Until then, we can tell you that the NBC folks will be serving up some repeat episodes of Chicago Pd during this 3-week delay. According to the TV guide listings, they're re-airing the 4th episode of this season 11 tonight titled, "Escape." NBC's official description for this repeat episode 4 of Chicago Pd season 11 reads like this,...

We live in a society that insists if you work hard, you can probably achieve the goals you've set for yourself. But "Problemista," the first feature film by writer and comedian Julio Torres, which is now in theaters worldwide, poses the question: is working hard always enough? Loosely based off of Torres's own immigration experience, the film follows Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador struggling to make his dream a reality in New York City who loses his job and desperately needs to secure a sponsor to stay in the States. Even after taking a freelance assistant gig with an erratic art critic named Elizabeth (played by Tilda Swinton), Alejandro (played by Torres) finds himself in one of the most relentless and nightmarish mazes of American bureaucracy - the US immigration system.

It’s a slow weekend for theatrical releases but a great one for streaming debuts. The hottest title is a surefire Oscar candidate, and the others have become fan favorites with long shelf lives ahead.
The contender to watch this week: “Dune: Part Two“
Denis Villeneuve‘s first “Dune” won six of its 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects. His second, 2024’s highest-grossing movie to date, could show up in many of the same categories next year. Timothée Chalamet probably has a better shot at a nomination for the Bob Dylan biopic he’s currently shooting, and if Zendaya deserves recognition for anything, it’s “Challengers.” But even without acting contenders, “Dune: Part Two” could rank among next season’s biggest players. It’s still in theaters, but you can now ride the sandworm at home by renting or purchasing the film on VOD.

There have been experimental, freestyling essay films and memoiristic documentaries around for years, going back to Chris Marker’s Sans Soleil or Agnès Varda’s The Gleaners and I. But just lately it feels like the sprawling poetic-realist subgenre is flourishing, especially in the sunny uplands of film festivals. Like an extension of the creative-writing exhortation to “write about what you know” young documentary-makers are increasingly shooting movies about not just who they are but also their family history. “Disappear Completely” may suffer from diminishing returns, but there’s an ironic pleasure in a movie about a cursed man losing his five senses one at a time that gets gradually worse as you watch it.
Caught somewhere between Dan Gilroy’s “Nightcrawler” and Sam Raimi’s “Drag Me to Hell,” director Luis Javier Henain’s Spanish-language horror won the attention of genre fans out of Fantastic Fest 2022 but just started streaming in the U.S. on Netflix Friday, April 12. The supernatural tale of intensifying torture recounts the fate of Santiago (the unflappable Harold Torres), a tabloid photographer whose primary job seems to be hunting down crime scenes so he can snag candid shots of corpses.
We meet our nauseating anti-hero at the scene of a picturesque accident; crushed by a light pole, a young woman in yellow bleeds beautifully. She’s evocative of Evelyn McHale (look it up!) and...

Chicago P.D. introduced Office Dante Torres as a hard-nosed cop willing to do anything to get the job done.
Torres is from the streets and part of his identity is expressed in the tattoos adorning his body.
Some Chicago P.D. fans might not realize that actor Benjamin Levy Aguilar (he plays Torres) has no tattoos.
This means he has to sit through an extensive process to have the tattoos added to his body when Torres shows parts of his body on screen.
Shower scenes are particularly noteworthy because of the huge cross Torres has on his back. That cross has to be reapplied each time Torres exposes his back.
It’s a lot of work to get his character camera-ready, but Torres has been a great addition to Intelligence in recent seasons.

Blur took the stage at Coachella on Saturday, and to close out their portion of the night, they brought out performers from the Torres Martinez Cahuilla Bird Singers.
It was Blur’s first time at Coachella since 2013 (though Damon Albarn has made a few surprise appearances in recent years), and the band delivered renditions of some of their most beloved songs, like “Song 2,” “Girls & Boys,” “Beetlebum,” and more.
The Britpop legends first brought out a group of Bird Singers to perform a traditional piece titled “Bird Song,” honoring the culture and history of the indigenous tribes of the Coachella region. From there, the Bird Singers loaned their voices to Blur’s “Death of a Party,” and then returned at the end of the night to close out the set with “Tender.”

After much anticipation, the sequel to the 2017 sketch “Papyrus 2” has finally emerged despite being cut for time during the live broadcast, making its debut on YouTube.
The original sketch was conceived by former “SNL” writer Julio Torres, who was inspired by a past tweet in which he mused, “Every day I wake up and remember that Avatar, a huge international blockbuster, used the Papyrus font for their logo, and no one stopped them.”
Directed by Dave McCary (who also shot the previously pointed Torres sketch “Wells For Boys” with his now-wife and current collaborator Emma Stone), this meditation on obsession and a questionable font became the logo for James Cameron’s massive franchise.
Gosling recalled the (alleged) decision-making process of choosing the font papyrus for the blockbuster, in the past sketch, “Like a thoughtless child just wandering by a garden, just yanking leaves along the way.” Eventually, his character would...

Chicago P.D. is on an extended spring hiatus as the show takes a break before its race to the season finale.
This is unfortunate timing, as the recent episodes of the show had ramped up fans’ interest, with Intelligence tracking a serial killer and then wrapping up the Torres undercover case.
At the same time, many fans may be upset that it feels like the season just began. The season premiere debuted in January, and the season finale will arrive in May.
Two Hollywood strikes delayed the production of the One Chicago shows. Many cast and crew members took to the picket lines to fight for better benefits.
And coming up soon, one of the main characters is leaving Intelligence for good. Many online rumors have fans guessing what will happen to Detective Hailey Upton (played by Tracy Spiridakos).

One of those characters is Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), which fans saw the return of in Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 4.
Dr. Robbins has undoubtedly had one of the most exciting story arcs in the show.
She played a pivotal and inspirational character during the roughly nine years she was an attending surgeon and chief of pediatric surgery.
After six years of not being on the show, she returned for Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 4 to perform a revolutionary fetal brain surgery.
Astonishing, to say the least, but did her return hit us in the feels the way we had hoped?

Chicago P.D. is finally circling back to the Gloria Perez case.
This means Officer Dante Torres will be the member of Intelligence that the next new episode focuses on.
As Chicago P.D. fans have noticed, the show shifts between characters now, with singular episodes focusing on a character rather than the team.
This shift in presentation continues with a new episode called Somos Uno, where viewers learn what Torres (played by Benjamin Levy Aguilar) has been up to while undercover.
The Chicago P.D. cast introduced Yara Martinez as Gloria Perez earlier this season.
Perez became an informant for Torres as Intelligence worked to take down a drug ring. Things got messy at the end of that episode when Perez and Torres became intimate during the case.
Chicago P.D. Season 11, Episode 9 synopsis
