The history of film is teeming with alternate endings that never saw the light of day, whether it's because of production troubles, executive meddling, or writers and directors simply changing their minds. In franchise-oriented blockbuster cinema, the practice of studying, testing, and even shooting different endings is especially prevalent, as those movies have to weather a host of artistic and commercial ambitions that the ending must facilitate simultaneously.
Superhero movies, with their precise storytelling geometry and enormous cultural presence, are particularly susceptible to having their endings reconsidered or reshot. There is an enormous pressure for superhero movie endings to work, to resolve the plot efficiently, to send viewers home buzzing for the right reasons. While that sometimes leads to great, refreshingly thoughtful storytelling decisions, it can also lead to conformity, blandness, and incongruence just as often -- especially when the ending has been changed out of sheer executive pressure.

Brian De Palma apparently was less than enthused by Pauline Kael’s scathing “Body Double” review. The legendary critic didn’t seem to grasp what De Palma was attempting with his 1984 meta noir send-up of Hollywood.
The auteur’s take on “Rear Window” centered on a struggling actor (Craig Wasson) who seems to witness a murder while housesitting for his friend’s (Gregg Henry) pal. His relationship with a rising young porn actress (Melanie Griffith) leads to him investigating whether or not his voyeurism could solve a crime.
“Body Double,” which is receiving a theatrical re-release as part of Netflix’s Milestone Movies program in honor of its 40th anniversary, was received “harshly” by critics, according to actor Henry, who reunited with writer/director/producer De Palma after having a single yet memorable line in “Scarface.” Henry went on to work with De Palma for six more films.

Netflix is continuing to roll out its celebration of iconic films, this time turning the page to 1984.
As part of the streaming platform’s “Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection,” Netflix has unveiled the 1984 films celebrating their 40-year anniversary in 2024 with classics like “Footloose” and “Sixteen Candles” alongside Oscar contenders “Amadeus” and “Iceman.”
The Milestone Movies hail from Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, and Sony — the distributors that license content to Netflix.
Starting today, April 1, 2024, Netflix subscribers can revisit Brian de Palma’s erotic noir “Body Double” and Kevin Bacon’s breakout performance in “Footloose.” How about a double feature? There’s also “Repo Man” and “Beverly Hills Cop,” streaming just in time for franchise reboot “Beverly Hills Cop: Axle F” out this summer.
In addition to the cinematic celebrations in your Netflix queue, in-person special screenings of select films will continue at the Paris Theater in New York and Los Angeles...

For 12 seasons, "Murder, She Wrote" was the definitive cozy murder mystery show. Set in the small and charming yet dead-body-filled fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine, the show wormed its way into the hearts of procedural fans everywhere with its familiar structure and unlikely hero -- middle-aged mystery writer Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury). While the actor behind the beloved amateur sleuth passed away in 2022, "Murder, She Wrote" lives on, both in the form of much-watched reruns and in an upcoming movie adaptation.
Little is known about the new version of "Murder, She Wrote" at this point, but screenwriters Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo have said that the story will relate back to Cabot Cove and Jessica in some capacity. When it comes to potential cameos from old cast members, the pool is unfortunately limited, as several of the series' lead actors have passed away in the decades since the show ended.

A new episode of The Manson Brothers Show, the video series hosted by the writers/stars of the horror comedy The Manson Brothers Midnight Zombie Massacre – Chris Margetis (Stone Manson) and Mike Carey (Skull Manson) – has just been released, and in this one the Boys are looking back at James Gunn‘s 2006 horror comedy Slither (watch it Here). To find out what they had to say about it, check out the video embedded above!
Written and directed by Gunn, Slither has the following synopsis: The sleepy town of Wheelsy could be any small town in America — somewhat quaint and gentle, peopled with friendly folks who mind their own business. But just beneath the surface charm, something unnamed and evil has arrived…and is growing. Intent on devouring all life on Earth, this dark and slimy entity is infecting anyone in its path. In October of 2022, it was announced that James Gunn -- the director of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films -- would be leaving the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to take a prestigious job at Warner Bros. with his creative partner Peter Safran. The two of them have been tasked with inventing an entirely new interconnected cinematic universe of their own based on DC Comics, and Gunn has already announced his work on a Superman film he plans to call "Superman: Legacy." Gunn was already more or less facing the door when he directed "The Suicide Squad," a 2021 film based on DC Comics, and subsequently created a TV series, "Peacemaker," based on it.
"Vol. 3," as a result of Gunn's career shift, possesses an elegiac quality, with many established characters moving on to new careers at the film's conclusion. The mood is melancholic, as if audiences may not ever see these characters again.

This post contains spoilers for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3."
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" has the customary mid and post-credits scenes for a movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They're thankfully free of any overt sequel teases and instead serve as epilogues for some of our main characters. The mid-credits scene has Rocket (Bradley Cooper) leading a new team of Guardians. The post-credits scene follows up on where the film left Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) before the credits rolled.
Taking some earlier advice from Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Peter decides to return to Earth and finally reunite with his grandfather, Jason (Gregg Henry). Jason has appeared twice before; in the original film's opening, he was present when Peter's mother/his daughter Meredith passed away. In "Vol. 2," he narrowly avoided being swallowed up by Ego's (Kurt Russell) expansion. The first "Guardians of the Galaxy" even had...

[This story contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.]
When the credits roll on James Gunn’s final installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, the story isn’t finished yet. In typical Marvel fashion, there’s two end credits scenes — one of which hints at a future for the group, despite this being the end of the road for Gunn at Marvel as he settles into a head role at DC Studios.
With Vol. 3, Gunn puts Rocket (Bradley Cooper), the genetically engineered racoon genius with a snarky attitude, at the heart of the story. Although Rocket’s traumatic past has been hinted at over the course of the previous movies, Vol. 3 dives deep into his beginnings as an experiment created by the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji). Critically injured at the start of the film, Rocket experiences flashbacks to his past, as the rest of the Guardians fight to save his life.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments and the post-credits scenes in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” currently playing in theaters.
By this point, it’s no secret that Marvel Studios has lost some of its luster in its post-“Avengers: Endgame” era. Between the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s rapid expansion on Disney+ and the exits of stars like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and the late Chadwick Boseman, the Marvel saga has often felt at once too much and not enough: Sprawl without a center.
It’s a problem that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is particularly ill-equipped to address. For one, the film is wholly disconnected from everything else that’s happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe post-“Endgame” — there’s not a whisper of Kang or the multiverse or incursions or Talokan or, hilariously, Thor, even though the Guardians made a special...

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for both “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and its post-credits scenes.]
While “Guardians of the Galaxy” filmmaker James Gunn has never played coy about his plans to close out his Marvel Cinematic Universe trilogy with this week’s “Vol. 3”, the wider franchise doesn’t seem to be too pumped about the supposed end of the road for its most distinct band of intergalactic weirdos.
So it should come as little surprise that when the third film in the trilogy closes out, it leaves the possibility of more adventures wide open, care of a pair of new post-credits scenes that tease a future for (some) of our spacey heroes.
By way of catch up: Gunn’s film ends with Peter Quill Aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) finally heading home to Earth to reunite with his grandfather, where he will also presumably try out being a regular ol’ guy for once, while leaving Rocket...

Ready for the farewell tour?
The marketing campaign for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” savvily cooked up by the Marvel Studios and Disney teams, has positioned it as the last hurrah for the team that formed in 2014 with the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” and who have endured for two sequels, appearances in both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” as well as “Thor: Love and Thunder” and their very own seasonal celebration, 2022’s “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.” (They also have theme park attractions at Disney’s California Adventure in California and Epcot at Walt Disney World in Florida.)
Now that the final installment is here, we thought we’d break down what happens at the end of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and its implications for the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (or is it Multiverse?)

Warning: this post contains spoilers for "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3."
Director James Gunn announced long ago that his new film "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will be his last in this particular series. Gunn has famously moved over to Warner Bros. to construct a brand new interconnected series of movies based on DC Comics, leaving him no time to play around with the Marvel Comics characters he helped popularize on film. As such, "Vol. 3" feels very much like a "final chapter," as several characters will end up parting ways. Contrary to what popular wisdom might dictate, Gunn does not take the opportunity to kill off his entire cast by the end, leaving them all alive to pursue their passions. Many of the Guardians, however, will retire. The fact that any one of their stories has a proper ending is a rarity for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. More often,...

Considering how long I’ve been writing this editorial series, it’s wild that this is the first entry tackling Brian De Palma. While there’s a history of contentious reactions to his works (primarily from feminists in the 70s and 80s who accused him of misogyny for his often brutal treatment of female characters), aside from Adrian Lyne, De Palma is easily one of the most significant directors to work on mainstream Erotic Thrillers.
Body Double is a solid entry in his filmography. It is also incredibly representative of his filmmaking interests in that it focuses on doubles, deep focus/split screens, Hitchcockian themes of obsession, sex and voyeurism, and, finally, a mystery murder that is more complicated than it initially appears.
For first time viewers, it might be surprising to learn that star Melanie Griffith does not appear until well past the one hour mark, after her doppelgänger,...

Exclusive: Veteran talent agent Melisa Spamer, who most recently ran Domain Talent, is joining the talent department of Innovative Artists. She will be based at Innovative Artists’ Los Angeles office.
Spamer began her career at Metropolitan Talent Agency before founding Domain Talent in 2005 with former partners Gabrielle Krengel and Joe Vance in 2005. Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to renew geopolitical espionage thriller Hit & Run, co-created, executive produced and headlined by Fauda’s Lior Raz, for a second season. The news comes a month and a half after the release of Season 1, which ended with a major cliffhanger.
Hit & Run, which also starred Sanaa Lathan, Kaelen Ohm, Moran Rosenblatt and Gregg Henry, was well received by critics and viewers, with 70%+ ratings from both official reviews and audience feedback. But the sprawling drama, whose first season, impacted by the pandemic, filmed in New York and Israel, is expensive.
Because of the Covid-related industry shutdown, the nine-episode Season 1 took three years to produce. It debuted August 6 and broke into Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 the following week at No. 8. It was the thriller’s only appearance on the overall weekly chart, which other Netflix originals like Outer Banks and Virgin River recently topped.

After “Hamilton” made an earwormy global phenomenon from the life story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton, no chapter of history can be declared too dour for spangly, heart-on-sleeve musical treatment — though the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 is still a pretty unlikely candidate. The stage roots of “Stand!” go back further than Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway smash: It’s been 15 years since it first hit Canadian stages under the title “Strike!,” and the eventual film adaptation has the air of a patient, resourceful labor of love, while also showing why the material wasn’t more immediately rushed before cameras. Earnest and plainly felt, this grafting of a cross-cultural romance onto the story of a critical turning point in Canadian workers’ rights doesn’t want for incident and emotional commitment, but Robert Adetuyi’s film does fall a little short on showmanship.
Having bowed on home soil in 2019, “Stand!” received a one-day engagement in U.

"The world changes one heart at a time." Catch the official US trailer for a movie musical version of a stage show about a workers revolt called Stand!, directed by Canadian filmmaker Robert Adetuyi. This Canadian musical is actually about America and a workers strike in 1919. The music, lyrics and score are by Danny Schur (of Made In Winnipeg: The Terry Sawchuk Origin Story) and the film features Lisa Bell’s show-stopping performance of the protest song "Stand!" An immigrant Romeo & Juliet battle for love and a better life during a time of social upheaval, in this musical is set against the true story of the general worker strikes of 1919. The film stars Marshall Williams, Laura Wiggins, Lisa Bell, Gregg Henry, Erik Athavale, Paul Essiembre, and Hayley Sales. This looks like a good story about the workers rising up and fighting back against vile greed and wealth. Maybe it's time we do this yet again!

(Spoilers alert: Please don’t read on if you haven’t watched the “Black Lightning” Season 1)
As “Black Lightning” fans will know, there are plenty of similarities between The CW’s drama and the DC comics: Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) is a former Olympic athlete-turned principal of Garfield High who fights a local gang called The Hundred as super hero Black Lightning. His biggest nemesis is Tobias Whale (Marvin Jones III), who killed his father.
As Season 1 has progressed, we learn that Peter Gambi, who created Jefferson’s suit and practically raised him after his father’s death, has a secretive past.
Gambi was tasked in the 1980s by a group called A.S.A. to round up super-humans, but leaked their information to Jefferson’s father, Alvin Pierce, when he learned that their “vaccinations” were killing children. When he found out Jefferson was someone the organization would be after, he practically raised Jefferson after Alvin was murdered.
Also Read: The CW Renews 'Black Lightning,' 'Dynasty,' 'Riverdale' and 7 Other Series
In the comics, it was Gambi himself who killed Alvin, and he sacrifices his life by jumping in front of a bullet to save Jefferson’s life. The act is also one of penance because of his guilty secret about Alvin’s death.
In the Season 1 finale on Tuesday, Gambi doesn’t get shot — in fact, he ends up shooting and killing Martin Proctor (Gregg Henry), who it was revealed has been rogue and no longer working for the government. Jefferson’s wife Lynn alerts the press to Proctor’s experiments, and the Pierce family returns home.
Tobias has gotten away and is still alive, and the season ends with Tobias opening Proctor’s briefcase — using the dead man’s severed thumbs — and declaring himself the king of Freeland.

Of course, the show isn’t based on a particular book, and is inspired by the comics, not an exact recreation. But looking ahead to season 2, keeping your eyes on the books might be a good idea, as showrunner Salim Akil recently teased TV Line with this:
“What I will say about the second season is I think I’m going to try to do it in a way that allows people to almost ‘read a comic,’ you know what I mean? The season will arc out in a different way.”
Looking ahead to “Black Lightning” comic story lines that might take place after Season 1: at one point, Jefferson is offered a spot on the Justice League, but he ultimately turns it down. It would be interesting to see other superheroes from the DC universe appear on The CW drama — especially because Jones told TheWrap that he’d love to see Tobias Whale battle Batman.
Later on in the comics, Black Lightning joined a team called The Outsiders, which involved several other DC heroes like Metamorpho, Geo-Force, Katana, Halo and Looker. After a stint as Lex Luthor’s secretary of education, Jefferson did end up taking a spot on the Justice League of America.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Shadow of Death: The Book of War,” the season one finale of “Black Lightning.”
When sitting down to craft the first season finale of his CW superhero drama “Black Lightning,” Salim Akil didn’t have to look farther than a specific issue of the comic. He even keeps a signed and framed copy in his office of Tony Isabella’s “Black Lightning Volume 2. Issue 5,” entitled “Requiem.”
“In the comic, you’ll notice that Black Lightning is in the hospital, on his deathbed, basically, and he started ruminating about his past in flashbacks in the comic. And so that structure was really what captured me,” Akil tells Variety. “It really did allow me to go back in time with him as a kid and deal with his father’s death and then allow him to actually take the stairway to...

Brian DePalma has always come under the gun of the Movie Police, whether it’s for charges of Hitchcock “homages” or misogynistic attitudes towards his female characters. Well round up the paddy wagons for Body Double (1984), the clever thriller that mixes Vertigo, Rear Window, and the adult film industry into one heady stew that audiences took a hard pass on at the time. Maybe it was too classy?
Released in late October by Columbia Pictures, Body Double returned less than its $10 million budget and garnered the same mixed reviews that followed DePalma around for most of his career. (For those keeping count, Ebert gave it a three and a half star review; did his appreciation of the female form inform his opinion? Discuss amongst yourselves.) Regardless of its box office demise, Body Double lives on as one of DePalma’s cleverest magic tricks, a cinematic sleight of hand gussied up in fishnets and mirrored ceilings.

I can still remember going to see James Gunn’s debut feature Slither on opening night in March of 2006. It was to be my birthday movie, so myself and a group of friends all got together at the movie theater, ready to check out what Gunn had in store for us. I was the only one among us with an awareness of his work, having followed his career as a screenwriter during his days at Troma through The Specials, the two live-action Scooby-Doo movies, and, most notably, his 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead. Because I knew what to expect from a James Gunn movie, naturally I loved Slither. My friends did, too. The rest of the nearly empty theater seemed puzzled and disgusted by it, though, and I knew that night that the movie was going to die a quick death.
I was half right. Yes, Slither disappeared from...

Before James Gunn started working with Marvel and launched the Guardians of the Galaxy film franchise, he made a crazy horror film called Slither. This would such a wonderfully demented horror film filled with all kinds of nasty blood and gore. Who would have thought at the time that Slither was released that Gunn would have ended up directing two of the best Marvel films!?
The 2006 film is now making its Blu-ray debut thanks to Scream Factory, who is releasing it as a Deluxe Collector's Edition on August 1st. As you might imagine it's going to be packed full of bonus feature for fans to enjoy including commentary by Gunn and stars Nathan Fillion and Michael Rooker. That should be fun to listen to while watching the movie!!
The sleepy town of Wheelsy could be any small town in America — somewhat quaint and gentle, peopled with friendly folks who mind their own business. But just beneath the surface charm, something unnamed and evil has arrived…and is growing. Intent on devouring all life on Earth, this dark and slimy entity is infecting anyone in its path. Now it’s up to the local sheriff, Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion, Firefly, Castle), and his team to stop the spread of rampant devastation – and shocking mutilation – before it’s too late. This outrageously funny horror film also stars Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Walking Dead), Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Pitch Perfect) and Gregg Henry (Body Double, Jason Bourne).
The full list of bonus Features include:
New Audio Commentary with writer/director James Gunn and actors Nathan Fillion and Michael RookerNEW The Genesis of Slither – an interview with writer/director James GunnNEW The Other MacReady – an interview with actor Gregg HenryAudio commentary with James Gunn and Nathan FillionDeleted and extended scenes with optional commentary by James GunnVisual Effects: Step by StepSlithery Set Tour with actor Nathan FillionThe Sick Minds and Slimy Days of SLITHERBrewing the Blood – How to Make BloodBringing Slither’s Creatures to LifeLloyd Kaufman’s Video DiaryGag ReelWho is Bill Pardy? featuretteTheatrical Trailer
