For Mac Quayle, composing the score for the HBO film project “The Great Lillian Hall” proved something of a departure from his most recent projects, which have included nine seasons of the FX anthology “American Horror Story,” the Fox/ABC procedural “9-1-1” and the Netflix drama “Leave the World Behind.” “Lillian Hall” tells the story of a legendary Broadway star (Jessica Lange) fearfully facing the ticking clock of time while doggedly working to defy it following a dementia diagnosis. In talking to director Michael Cristofer about the music, “we recognized this is an intimate story about Lillian Hall and this sudden dementia that she’s experiencing,” Quayle recalls. “We thought that (when) it needed some music that it shouldn’t be too big, it needed to have a little more intimate sound. On May 31, 2024, “The Great Lillian Hall” premiered on HBO to predominantly positive reviews from critics. In the film, Oscar, Emmy and Tony winner Jessica Lange plays the titular character, a Broadway star battling dementia as she prepares for a big role on the Great White Way. The movie reunites Lange with her “American Horror Story” co-stars Kathy Bates and Lily Rabe, who play Lillian’s assistant and daughter, respectively. Pierce Brosnan and Jesse Williams also star.
The HBO movie is loosely inspired by actress Marian Seldes, who was the aunt of the film’s screenwriter, Elisabeth Seldes Annacone. Michael Cristofer directed the movie for HBO Films. Read our full review round-up below.

When Emmy voters get spooked, it’s often frighteningly good. Take a tour through our photo gallery below featuring 14 of the Emmys’ scariest acting wins in the history of the TV Academy.
Of course we had to include the various wins from “American Horror Story.” The horror franchise’s various installments have thus far reaped victories for Kathy Bates as a hate-spewing witch and James Cromwell as a deranged Nazi doctor, plus Jessica Lange makes our list twice as both a murderous neighbor and a malicious sorceress.
Also making the list twice is Michael Emerson, who scared the pants off us as a serial killer in “The Practice” before making our skin crawl as the mysterious leader of the Others on “Lost.”
Another multiple-murderer to make the cut is John Lithgow for his terrifying guest role in “Dexter”.

It’s a fairly rare weekend at the box office when there are five new wide releases, but it’s even rare when none of those movies even crack the top six. Read on for the weekend box office report.
After one of the worst Memorial Day weekends in decades, the transition weekend between May and June wasn’t going to be much better with none of the new releases opening in more than 2,000 theaters. That wasn’t helped by the fact that Disney, the one major studio in the mix, decided to dump their latest well-reviewed movie into a few hundred theaters with very little fanfare.
After settling for second place over Memorial Day, Sony Pictures’ animated “The Garfield Movie” moved into first place with an estimated $14 million, down just 42% from its three-day opening weekend, to bring its domestic total to $51.6 million. Overseas, the Chris Pratt-starring family film...

It’s another bummer of a weekend at the summer of box office, where overall domestic revenue looks to be down 69 percent — no, not a typo — from a year ago as Hollywood and theater owners continue to grapple with a lack of big event pics. And year-to-date revenue is now down 24 percent over last year.
For some, there is reason to smile. Alcon and Sony’s The Garfield Movie easily purred past George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga to top the weekend chart with an estimated $14 million for a domestic tally of $51.6 million. Alcon fully financed the $60 million film, which crossed the $100 million mark overseas for a global tally of $152.2 million.
Furiosa, costing a pricey $168 million to produce, fell a steep 59 percent to $10.8 million, dashing hopes that it could rebound after a disappointing Memorial Day opening. The dystopian epic is also stalling overseas, where it took in only...

If the summer box office is ever going to heat up, it’ll have to wait a while longer. In a weekend being led by holdovers, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” looks to overtake “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” for first place on domestic charts.
The marketplace continues to be dire overall, but Sony is doing well for itself. The studio is also putting out the manga adaptation “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle” through its anime banner Crunchyroll. Playing in 1,086 locations (including showtimes in a few Imax auditoriums), the high school sports film earned $1.9 million across Friday and preview screenings and looks to take sixth place on domestic charts. It’s just the latest example of how anime has found a niche but dedicated theatrical audience in North America. In “The Great Lillian Hall,” Jessica Lange plays a veteran theater actress — a legend of the Broadway stage — who is always putting on airs, reciting bits from her favorite roles, and carrying on in the tradition of fabled actresses who get known for playing characters like Blanche DuBois because they’ve actually got a lot of Blanche in them. (They believe their own illusions.) Yet just because Lillian Hall is a flamboyant grand dame doesn’t mean that she’s not showing you who she is. Lange, a beauty at 75, has a face that has only grown more expressive with the years. In “The Great Lillian Hall,” that face is a map of emotion we read. Even when Lillian is being deceptive (even when she’s deceiving herself), the majesty of her feelings shines through.

It is a sad state of affairs in Hollywood when you can have such talented actors as Diane Keaton, Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard, but the best you can do is stick them in boomer-baiting forgettable comedic contrivances like Summer Camp, the latest in a long line of movies for Keaton, who also is a producer on it, in which she is cast with female peers of similar age to mix slapschtick with attempted pathos and senior romance. It is the kind of formula you can sell with a simple pitch: Take three beloved septuagenarian Oscar winning and nominated stars and send them back to the summer camp where they bonded as kids. Hilarity and hijinks ensue, along with giving each a later-in-life regret or dead husband to add a bit of drama to the proceedings. Bingo! The mid-week matinees will be sellouts!

The star hopes for some more of that Book Club magic although she’s the weakest link in a trio buoyed by Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard
The many gasps that met the $100m-plus box office total for 2018’s Book Club were not quite shared by all. The film, a frothy comedy led by four women over the age of 65, might have been an outlier at the time but it proved that once again, when smartly catered to, underserved audiences will come out en masse, a more inevitable result than many seem to think. When Bridesmaids proved this with younger women back in 2011, the industry was lethargic in its response, a wave of adjacent green lights failing to come as expected but Book Club had an instant impact, a string of grey-hued imitators in its wake.
But luck ran out a little faster than expected. Jane Fonda’s 80 for Brady...

If Hollywood aims to bring older audiences back to theaters by making movies about them, I submit Summer Camp as a case study in what works (Eugene Levy!) and what definitely does not — painfully flat attempts at wackiness being the chief offender. Veering between strained slapstick and thoughtful tête-à-têtes, this boomer-focused reunion comedy strands a game cast of accomplished septuagenarians in a mostly laugh-free zone of zip lines and predictable beats.
Director Castille Landon’s screenplay offers some well-crafted dialogue, but it never adds up to anything resembling momentum. Landon, whose previous features include the Katherine Heigl starrer Fear of Rain and a couple of entries in the After series of romance movies, does get the setting right in a story that brings together three lifelong friends at the sleepaway camp where they first met. The friends are played by Diane Keaton (who also serves as a producer), Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard.

It happens to many of us above a certain age. You wake up one day, and realize that your life involves neither your childhood besties, nor the carefree bliss you once took for granted. With that in mind, Castille Landon’s wearisome comedy “Summer Camp” ponders, what if there was a way to awaken our inner child and reestablish our priorities later in life through some fun and play? It’s surely a worthy enough premise for a good time, but one “Summer Camp” squanders through dull jokes, an uninspiring story without any real stakes and an overall phony feeling that the film can’t shake.
Indeed, “Summer Camp” often seems only as authentic as a high-end glamping site, when it unsuccessfully tries to convince the audience that it’s the real deal about the virtues of letting your hair down once in a while — a teaching that the film hammers on,...

I am a sucker for movies about Broadway and those who spend their lives in the theatre. Of course the crown jewel of the genre is the Oscar-winning All About Eve, but there are so many others including 1933’s Morning Glory which won a young Katherine Hepburn her first Academy Award, as well as its rarely seen remake, 1958’s underrated Stage Struck. Ginger Rogers did a good one, too: Forever Female. The list goes on and on and now includes a stellar new entry, The Great Lillian Hall which gives the great Jessica Lange a challenging role worth her talents.
Premiering on HBO May 31, just barely under the wire for Emmy consideration, Lange’s performance as a stage legend facing dementia should send chills down the spine of any other contenders for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie this season. This veteran star simply knocks it out of the park.

May comes to a close with a quieter weekend full of odds and ends and nothing particularly wide in terms of studio releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
After a fairly disappointing Memorial Day weekend, the month ends with a number of moderately wide releases. Since most of these new films are smaller, few theater counts have been reported, making it tougher to determine how some of them might perform, though it’s likely that only one will be getting a wide enough release to potentially break into the Top 5. Otherwise, we’re looking at a repeat of the Top 4 with the slightest chance that “The Garfield Movie” might pass “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” with few of the new releases targeting family audiences.

What starts as a surprise romance turns into a nightmare for one in the trailer for A Family Affair.
In the two-minute look at the upcoming Netflix film, Zac Efron stars as movie star Chris Cole who begins a romance with Nicole Kidman’s Brooke. However, Kidman just happens to be the widowed mother to Zara (Joey King), Chris’ young assistant who quit working for Chris and hates him.
“I know him very well. He’s self-absorbed and selfish,” King’s Zara says. “He’s going to hurt her, and I will have to kill him.”
Throughout the trailer, Kidman and Efron can be seen growing closer as King’s Zara continues to view it as a “gross sexcapade thing.”
“I love being your mother more than anything in this world. But I’m starting to feel things I never thought I would feel again. Not since your father,” Kidman says.

This seems like another "we have to do this too" version of the exact same story from Prime Video's The Idea of You. They're almost the same plot, except in this one the guy is a movie star, not a pop star, who falls for the "older woman." A surprising romance kicks off comic consequences for a young woman, her mother, and her movie star boss Chris Cole, as they face the complications of love, sex, and identity. Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron star in this romcom, along with Joey King, Liza Koshy, Sherry Cola, and Kathy Bates. Well this looks pretty awful, not a single funny line in here and everything else is super cringe.

Boss turned stepdad? ? On Tuesday, Netflix released the trailer for the comedy film A Family Affair, out June 28, starring Zac Efron, Joey King, and Nicole Kidman in a less-than-ideal work-family situation.
The trailer opens with a scene of King’s character Zara — a day-to-day assistant to actor Chris Cole (Efron) — letting out a freaked-out yelp and passing out after walking in on her mom, Brooke (Kidman), in bed with Chris.
“Name the movie I won a Teen Choice Award for,” Efron tells Zara to make sure she’s conscious. Her response?...

Throughout the years of his work, Stephen King has surely got enough acclaim from his readers and the world’s critics, but not that much of recognition from the cinema’s biggest awards institution.
There’s a whole collection of movies and shows that were successfully adapted from Stephen King’s most famous novels, but only one of the films, Misery, starring Kathy Bates, made it to winning an Oscar for Best Actress back in 1991.
Though the Academy is somewhat discreet when it comes to celebrating horror flicks, King still resents Hollywood’s essential award for not giving a chance to his novel’s adaptation that he himself considers one of the best.
Back in 2007, King’s 1999 short story titled 1408 was transformed into a psychological thriller of the same name. Starring John Cusack, the movie follows Mike Enslin who got everyone’s acclaim for his firm disbelief in the supernatural,...

“The Good Wife” introduced Carrie Preston‘s Elsbeth Tascioni back in 2010. She was so popular with fans that she also featured in the spin-off show “The Good Fight.” Now Preston and Elsbeth take center stage in the brand new spin-off “Elsbeth.”
CBS’ hit drama series follows Elsbeth as she carries out work as an unconventional attorney and helps the NYPD catch criminals with her astute observations. Preston was excellent in her guest role in “The Good Wife” but she is even better here as the main course, as critics have noted.
Ben Travers (Indie Wire) observed: “Preston knows the exact pitch at which to play Elsbeth. Never grating yet always pesky, her unrelenting positivity (and general relentlessness) would undoubtedly get old, fast, in real life. Cops and criminals alike are exhausted by her, but audiences can more easily appreciate her dogged demeanor because a) we know she’s on the right track,...

Jessica Lange is perfection as the fictional actress Lillian Hall, known for decades as a revered star of the theater. During rehearsals for her starring role in The Cherry Orchard, she is having unusual difficulty memorizing her lines, and before long learns that the cause is early dementia. Despite that ominous theme, The Great Lillian Hall is a lovely tribute to life in the theater, with all its personal compromises, and a showcase for Lange, who deftly shows the character as a vulnerable woman and also displays the distinct style of Lillian the bravura actress.
Lillian is such a star that she is the key to the box office in the Broadway revival of Chekhov. The film’s trajectory takes her through rehearsals, and in and out of her personal life as she grapples with her diagnosis, in a plot driven by the question of whether she’ll make it to opening night.

Jennifer Aniston delivered another star-powered performance in the new season of Apple TV’s flagship series, “The Morning Show.” The series follows the behind-the-scenes drama of a morning TV show in the US, with co-anchors Alex Levy (Aniston) and Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) at the center of events.
The latest season (season three) depicts Alex quite literally heading into space while she tussles with Jon Hamm‘s tech mogul as a media merger for her show’s network, Uba, bubbles away. Aniston proved herself a master of comedy with “Friends” and here shows, once again, that she has the dramatic acting chops to equal her comedic skills. Aniston is captivating every time she’s on-screen and it’s a delight to see her in one of the meatiest roles of her career, as noted by critics.

Jessica Lange may have hinted at her own retirement for years, but the legendary actress is actually playing it out onscreen with her latest film “The Great Lillian Hall.”
Lange stars as the titular (fictional) iconic stage actress who grapples with her own legacy amid a dementia diagnosis. Her daughter (Lily Rabe) struggles with separating her mother Lillian from her Broadway fame, while Kathy Bates, Jesse Williams, and Pierce Brosnan round out the cast.
“I have lived my entire life in a place that creates illusions,” Lange says in the trailer as Lillian. Yet upon her cognizant decline, what’s real anymore, anyway?
“The Great Lillian Hall” is directed by Michael Cristofer. The official synopsis reads: “As beloved Broadway star Lillian Hall (Lange) pours her heart, soul, and time into preparing for her next big role, she finds herself blindsided by confusion and forgetfulness. Does the Academy hate horror? "Hate" is probably a strong word, but it's not unfair to say the Academy has at least an aversion to the genre. With the notable exception of Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs," which swept the Oscars and won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay, the Oscars tend to overlook or ignore horror movies altogether. For (recent) example: many people thought Toni Collette should've at least nabbed a nomination for her incredible work in Ari Aster's "Hereditary," but that didn't happen.
Stephen King knows a thing or two about horror movies, especially since most of his books have been adapted to the screen. When it comes to King's movie adaptations, only one has achieved Oscar glory: "Misery," which earned Kathy Bates a Best Actress Oscar. But if King had his way, another one of his movies would've been recognized by the Academy,...

Looking at the crop of new scripted series selected by the broadcast networks for 2024-25, one cannot help but reminisce about the 20th anniversary of what may have been broadcast television’s greatest season ever.
The 2004-05 season introduced several genre-defying series — all but one based on original ideas — whose impact on TV storytelling is still being felt: Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, House, The Office and Veronica Mars. Remarkably, one of them, Grey’s Anatomy is still around, having just been renewed by ABC for Season 21, along with another show that premiered that same season, animated comedy American Dad!.
Aside from the fact that the current economic realities of the TV business will likely never support another drama going to 21 seasons, broadcast networks will also likely never take chances on so many unconventional ideas: a sci-fi drama on a deserted island that set the tone for modern genre fare, a...

For cable-watchers, the show airs reruns in syndication, while home media junkies can get a DVD box set and those who prefer to stream can catch all nine seasons on Prime Video or PlutoTV.
