Don't Hug Me I'm Scared: Friendship (2022)
Below average
Not particularly compelling or anything like most of the other episodes, just kind of a drag.
Stylistically many of the brain segments are just kind of a headache, sort of clashes with the aesthetic that made the series so compelling in the first place.
The humor is the best part of this one. The worm is really damn annoying and at least they make jokes out of it. Ending where Warren gets impaled through the head is just kind of disturbing, and the end doesn't really make sense. Also the song at the end is cringe, sorry.
Not awful but definitely below average, most of this season is pretty good.
The Backrooms (2022)
Mystery vs Superfluity
The pure consistency is one of the things that places this series above the rest. The analog style footage serves only to strengthen the intrigue of the series, and remains present throughout. Mystery is built gradually, so that the series still has a lot of unexplored depths while still showcasing a lot of interesting details.
All of the 3d environments look tangible and real, and on top of that a lot of the coloring in some shots especially looks great.
Also, there is some plot structure, enough for there to be a narrative to follow while still not giving away too many details. The result is a sort of freeform narrative, although it is much more structured than the typical layered analog horror franchise, EG Local 58 or The Mandela Catalogue.
A lot of the reasons this has become so popular have to do with how high quality it is. The analog aesthetic, the crisp sound design, the intuitive and consistent narrative, and the top notch editing (beginning sequence of Missing Persons, the entirety of Report) all combine to create this internally consistent and fascinating parallel world, that delivers while still leaving way for possibilities ahead.
As a result, I look forward to each next entry more than I look forward to most mainstream shows. Not superfluous, not lacking, just complex.
Stranger Things: Chapter One: The Hellfire Club (2022)
A rocky start
Inconsistency is the new most terrifying monster this season as the show makes you sit through an hour of cliché high school drama, and then at the end shocks you into interest!
Seriously though, I have mixed feelings about this episode.
The first few minutes are probably the best and most interesting part about this episode, with an intriguing flashback adding details to Eleven's past, done mysteriously but also boldly, and it's a successful hook because Eleven is an important character with a lot of mystery surrounding her already.
Most of the rest of the episode just builds character dynamics, and is pretty slow, even during the simultaneous sequences of the basketball and d&d games.
There are a few things that were pretty interesting, like the clock stuck inside the tree during one of the cheerleader's hallucinations. I would've preferred to see more of that because time as a concept hasn't been explored yet in the show, and the imagery tied to the clock is legitimately very interesting.
The end of the episode really killed the hype I had for the show honestly. It just seemed over the top and wasn't really mysterious or slick or anything, just meant to scare the viewer into investment. While a lot of motifs (like the demogorgon, the mind flayer, the upside down, the flayed, and the clock) are interesting throughout the show, for some reason watching someone get thrown against the ceiling and gruesomely mutilated just doesn't seem that interesting to me?
The reason the shows mysteries are generally so interesting is that you watch the mysteries unravel with the progression and the intensity building, rather than the intensify being shoved down your throat without the mystery that made the show so intriguing. The hook that got audiences so invested in the show in the first place was the disappearing of Will in season one, which left all of the details up to the imagination of the viewer. It's much less interesting when it's revealed right away and you find out that it's extremely unpleasant to watch with no real payoff.
I get that it's setup for the rest of the season, so the boring parts are forgivable as the season is still bound to pick up a pace at one point, but the end is over the top just for the sake of shock value, and is a poorly executed hook.
Still interested in the show because of the motif with the clock and the partially revealed backstory of eleven. Interested, but not impressed.
5/10.
Rick and Morty: Rick & Morty's Thanksploitation Spectacular (2021)
Entertaining, but forgettable.
It feels like this show is forgetting what made it special. This episode is alright, and I'll take it over the last 3. As with most episodes this season though, I feel like it could've been better.
The thing with Rick and Morty being turkeys was kinda funny at first. I'm glad they didn't drag out that part, but the turkey version of the president was weird. It almost seemed like it was supposed to be a running joke in the episode, but it didn't get any laughs from me really.
Most of the action was cool, not gonna complain there. At least it was enjoyable to watch without reading into it too much.
The episode just feels like it's lacking in depth. Don't get me wrong- I prefer this over the last 3- I just don't want my opinion of the episode to come down to that. With R&M, normally an episode has a cool concept or story that makes the episode stand out. With this one though, it unfortunately comes down to "it could be worse".
I think Rick and Morty has been on the decline, and the first 2 episodes of season 5 gave me hope for the show, but the decline has never been more obvious than here, in the middle of season 5. I just hope the quality of the show comes back eventually. I miss the old R&M.
Rick and Morty: A Rickconvenient Mort (2021)
Is it me, or is this series more strange than it used to be?
I have the same issue with this episode that I did with episode 1 of this season. The Morty section of the episode was great, one of my favorite plots of this show probably. Planetina was great, the scene at the mine was really good. Definitely the highlight of the episode.
But again, like episode 1, the Rick plot was weird. Again. Kind of like the dragon episode from season 4 level of weird (still a much better episode than that). Some of the jokes felt super random and weird, like one guy on the third planet Rick visits exclaiming about how good gay sex with his Dad is? Seriously?
The main reason I still like this episode is because the plots tie into each other, and even if they don't intersect, I think they belong in the same episode. Also this episode has some comedic hits to balance out the misses.
Rick and Morty: Mort Dinner Rick Andre (2021)
Half good, half weird...
The narnia-like plot with all of the time manipulation stuff was cool, and I think it was the highlight of the episode. We've seen some time manipulation before but this episode shows some cool concepts regardless.
The Rick and Nimbus plot was, honestly, just weird. This show has been able to use absurdity to its advantage, in episodes like pickle rick, the wedding squanchers, and stuff like that. This episode just kinda felt over the top on all of that, kinda like the dragon episode.
One half of this episode is really cool, and reminds me of seasons 1 - 3 with its quality and style. The other half is weird and I didn't laugh once at the whole Mr. Nimbus thing (maybe it's just not my sense of humor). So, my opinion of this episode is mixed, and I gave it a 7/10. I liked it, but it could've been better. One of the weaker season premieres I think.
WandaVision: Breaking the Fourth Wall (2021)
I'm a little confused...
Great episode as always, visuals were amazing, story was great, and that Agatha thing was pretty surprising...
The way they were building it up, I thought Wanda was gonna be the villain, but suddenly in this episode she isn't? Also I thought the story was that Wanda took vision and made the reality bubble thing, but apparently Agnes was running it the whole time. I'm sorry but how does that make any sense? Wanda has control of this thing and expanded it at will. Also isn't she still a villain? I don't know.
I hope next Friday's episode clears this up. I love this series though.
Throat Notes (2020)
Colgrave's best work
Double king is awesome, but this one is even better. As always, the animation and sound design are absolutely stunning, as is the vibe it gives off, although on that mark specifically this one is special in my eyes.
This one is kinda weird though, and after watching it over a few times, this one part near the end still didn't make sense to me. I guess I just wish I knew what was going on a little more, although with a product of this quality it doesn't really bother me that much. With that said, the concept in this is really neat.
If anyone is actually reading this, give it a watch if you haven't already. It's a little strange but something you'll definitely want to experience, and afterward you'll probably think about it a bit. Very abstract, but at the same time, it's masterful.
Rick and Morty: Promortyus (2020)
Better than the previous episode, but pretty much anything would be, so...
After the last episode, quite figuratively and literally a train wreck, this episode seems a lot better. I wish there was more than one plot, and for some reason these episodes feel like 10 minutes when they're not. And that's because not a lot happens in them.
I really enjoyed quite a lot of this episode. It looked really cool. The shame is that, rather than the animation complementing the story, the story isn't that good. It's another loop.
It really seems like this series reached its peak in season 3. Sad to see a show with such talented writers take such a leap in the dark.
Cyanide and Happiness Shorts: Something Spacey (2020)
High rating for a high episode
In this episode, someone snorts a person and then goes on a drug trip.
It's pretty trippy.
South Park: Christmas Snow (2019)
My hope in this show is gone
This episode was pretty good compared to the rest of the episodes in the season, but I wanted the episode to end off with tegridy farms being ended or something.
I liked the first... 8 minutes. The rest just kinda went downhill. I really had hope for this episode.
My hope in this show is just gone tho, just get rid of tegridy farms in an epic way, just like it began
Not really sure why ap_bpx is trying to make a movement out of this. If you want to motivate people, use better grammar and learn to take a joke
Broomshakalaka (2013)
Watch dis
It is a little cringeworthy at times, but everything ends for the better. Awesome short film.
Salad Fingers (2004)
A little too strange
It's kinda cool, but the only episode I found "fascinating" is glass brother (which was actually pretty cool).
I'm not really sure what to think of it, because the animation is kinda cool, but I'm not really sure of what the point of watching the series is if nothing much happens.
One episode, saladfingers is eating another version of himself, but nothing comes of it. I guess the shock value is why people watch, but I found the shock value to wear off by episode 3.
Of course this series is great for reactions, because plenty of people like watching their favorite YouTubers being appalled by a green zombie doing "things" and making "sounds".
But if you're not a reaction channel trying to generate views, or bored, then don't watch this.
To be fair though, there is a good chance you will like this, because it's interesting, I just am not the type of person who watches this stuff a lot. Even though I watched every episode.
Double King (2017)
Unique story about greed
This is a really cool animated video, and if you haven't seen it, I would recommend you do.
This short isn't for everyone, but I loved it. I remember every character and it was a cool blend of art style, humor and horror.
Stick around for the end.
Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 6 (2016)
6: If you haven't seen this, watch it
This insane adventure is finally over. And it goes out with a bang.
This episode might be confusing to someone who hasn't seen the full series, but the callbacks especially are amazing.
This is such a cool way to end a series. Tons of visually interesting moments, and lots of cool and scary scenes, without relying on gore AT ALL to create the mood.
I love everything about this episode, from the yellow guy's reaction to everything, the tons of new brief songs and characters like Mr. Gel, and the boring reality of, well- reality! And, the music (not the song) but the music is great.
Also, drowning in oil
Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 5 (2015)
5: Nightmare fuel
This episode has a nice song, some really nice humor, cool visuals, and then- an overdose in gore.
While the concept of this is really really cool (especially when duck guy tries to escape), it is a little too disturbing to fit my interests, because the blood and guts in this episode were just disgusting.
In my opinion this episode did what it appears to attempt to do. To disturb. And believe me when I say that it is some of the most violent and disturbing content in all of YouTube.
I think that this episode is definitely necessary to be included in the series, but it just seems overly gruesome.
If you're over 18 I would still recommend giving this one a watch (with some discretion of course), because just like every episode, it has its own creative spin on things. However, if you are under 18, do yourself and your dreams a favor and skip this one.
Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 4 (2015)
4: An underrated episode
Most people would disagree, but I thought that this one was really good. This episode might be a little weird, but that says nothing about a series that uses weirdness to its advantage.
I have this darn song in my head, the computer puppet concept is cool, and the section near the middle where there is a bunch of glitching is just really cool.
I think that this episode gives a perfect dose of insanity, while keeping really cool and fun to watch.
Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 3: Love (2014)
3: I LOVE this one
This is a really nice episode. I think that the ending especially with the cult is fantastic, and ignore the random gore that appears to be a necessity in this series and you've got yourself a perfect episode.
Some of the one liners in this one are hilarious, and near the end the song is frickin great.
Poor Michael.
Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 2: Time (2014)
2: Everyone runs out of time
This is a great next episode. I think the moral of this one is my favorite in the series, and it is that everyone runs out of time.
I think that the visuals, song, and sort of humor were on par in this one. I think the end is kinda dark (even though it's just a show), but at least it's creative!
Don't Hug Me I'm Scared (2011)
1: A good start to a mostly great series
This episode is good for a start.
The song is considerably bland compared to all of the others, had a (sort of) moderated amount of gore. It was creative and has a lot of cool scenes, especially like the computer animation we see more of in episode 4.
Unfortunately there is no humor in it :/
South Park: Band in China (2019)
A great one off
There are a lot of one off episodes in this season, but this is the best one in the season by far. Offers great commentary on censorship in China, because it's about time someone talks about this sort of thing.
Also it's clear China is literally botting this episode with 3 and 4 star reviews so I'll just give this a 10
