Tomb Raider (2018)
4/10
Nothing original with weak preformances
22 March 2018
Personally, I prefer my Lara Croft to be someone who wants to adventure because she wants to, not someone who is doing it because of daddy issues but I can look past it. She ain't no Samus. Also, I've never seen the original Angelina Jolie movie so don't expect to have a comparison for that either. Maybe I'll watch it later who knows.

This movie is eeh. I promise you unless you've never seen any movie ever you can predict half the dialogue and 90% of the scenes that will take place. I could predict what most of the characters were going to say during certain scenes. I predicted how the main villain was going to die the moment we meet him. There are so many cliche lines and scenes you've heard and seen before in this film that it's impossible not to get distracted by it. The only scene that really stuck with me in any way was the brief scene where Lara kills someone for the first time. Besides that, I couldn't name anything in the film that I'm going to remember by the next time I see any other movie.

Also maybe I was just in a weird mood but this film had some really mixed acting in it. The only person I felt was good was our lead Alicia Vikander. Besides that everyone else just kinda played their roles, except Daniel Wu who's line delivery was awful especially during the climax. He didn't seem too frightened about his friend's potential death.

Also, the plot was kinda silly and unexplained. Now I know their source was a video game, a medium not known for fantastic plot, but some key points in the plot just feel unnecessary and are present just to have conflict. Basically, these group of people who work for a business or something really want this spooky evil power from a corpse buried deep in a mountain on an island. But some things are unexplained or presented so uninterestingly that I forgot about it. Most importantly why are they so evil. I understand they need to be an antagonist but literally, everything they say and do is evil and douchey. Why is your antagonist so 2D? A good villain is someone you love to hate or someone who can present themselves as fun to watch. This guy is just boring and evil for no real reason. He also makes a lot of stupid mistakes in the end that make no sense. Good thing he did that thing at the end to the corpse for no logical reason or else we might've not had our satisfying ending. I know I'm getting a little spoilerly but really there's nothing in this film you couldn't predict. It's not awful, but I'd rather have something be awful and stick with me than something that you forget by the time you leave the theater.

Annihilation (I) (2018)
5/10
Amazing Experience Held Back By Cliches
8 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
If there was one word I would use to describe Annihilation, it would be inconsistent. There are so many things in this film that make it stand out, and sometimes where I was amazed at what I was watching. This film seems to have this gimmick that the longer into the movie's runtime we get, the more interesting and thought-provoking stuff happens. Unfortunately, that gimmick seems to stick it's nose early into the film and incredibly harms the first act, which I'll get into during spoiler talk.

The inconsistency is everywhere in this film. Sometimes, I'm completely drawn into what I am watching, and other times I am bored out of my mind and uninterested with what I'm looking at. I think the biggest issue is in the acting. These are all very talented actors, Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson especially, but for some reason here they have absolutely no range and react to everything in the most unrealistic way possible, and a lot the dialogue in this film is just poorly written and lame. Early in the film, they get attacked by a pretty out of the ordinary creature, and they keep looking at it like I look at the container of my chocolate chip muffins in the morning, like it's something I'm used to and it's just in my way. Sure they get spooky scared when the jump scare scenes pop in, but besides those and few notable other scenes, they just have very little expression and range. And yes, the dialogue certainly didn't help, but again I'll get into spoiler talk for more details on that.

Can't really get into more details about this film before the spoiler section, but I really don't want to come off like I hate this film. The 5/10 I'm giving is a very good 5. The stuff in this film that is great, is great. Everything in the last 30 minutes is certainly worth it, with very creative visuals and tense moments that will stick with you when you leave the theater.

(SPOILERS) So I really wanted to go into detail about how awful the first 30 minutes as compared to the last 30 minutes. The connection between all our main characters was incredibly rushed. Natalie Portman meets them at the table, they say "we are going in" and she just kinda joins them. Sure we learn more about them as the adventure goes on, but we only seem to learn more about them moments before they die. It seems like the writers wanted to make really cool death scene moments, but forgot to actually add characters to them. All of these girls personalities are pretty copy and paste. Also, I really hope I wasn't rolling my eyes at how they tried to connect Natalie's character and her husband. Again, what they did with them at the end was not only unique but made you care about their connection. What didn't connect me was them tickling each other in bed and then saying something corny about the stars. I can't stand when movie writers do this because I feel like it's a lazy way to make you see a character as a good person. You can't make a character out of bootleg bible verses. Also the completely unnecessary scenes with her affair. Not only was it weird for the pacing but it added nothing to the story. Also, it just added another character that felt like a prop.

Again, there were fantastic things in the film. The visuals, CGI, and practical effects were very consistent in their quality, the ending was trippy and thought-provoking in all the best ways. That screaming bear was awesome, and I can't wait to watch that scene specifically again. Most of the horror and gore is done in a way that doesn't feel cheap, and the soundtrack was phenomenal, with a theme that is in the trailer that I was really happy to see how they used it in the film. I do recommend seeing this film, but I promise there is nothing wrong with being a little late to it.

Game Night (I) (2018)
7/10
A Comedy Worth Watching
1 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I was genuinely surprised by Game Night. While it is by no means anything spectacular, the film brings more to the table for the comedy genre during these days where really great directed comedies seem to be difficult to come by. This is easily John Francis's best-directed film yet, with a clear effort in making sure that this will be a comedy that can be not phrased or hailed, but remembered. This movie easily could've just been another "Horrible Bosses" or "Why Him?" but the direction and effort show that the John wanted more from it than that. The film was very good at keeping its tone consistent, and it's helped by all these really cool shots that make the real world look like a board game. Tracking shots are used consistently, long choreographed scenes that have one take are used consistently, and CGI is used very fluidly to improve how all these shots work.

But as great as the cinematography and direction is, not all of the jokes in the films are bullseyes. While most of the film is genuinely funny, especially from Rachel McAdams character, the film really likes to use "drag on" jokes, jokes that are only funny to the people that are fans of "The Office" style of humor. As much as the dollar bill bit was killing my sides, any of these jokes that involved Jason Bateman, not so much. I enjoyed his performance but he is much better suited for the quick and witty kind of role. But how funny a movie is will always be up to an individual, and this individual thinks there were a lot funnier jokes than unfunny, so it was worth it to me.

SPOILER TALK: I think some people might feel cheated if they watched the trailers, hoping that the film carries the joke that the characters believe its a game throughout the whole movie. This plot/joke is pretty much dropped before the halfway point. But it didn't bother me as I think the joke would've gotten stale after awhile. It's a very funny and clever way to set up the events to follow in the film. Now I wasn't the biggest fan of the double switcharoo at the end, but that's only because it was rather predictable.

I recommend checking this out,. It's not amazing, but it's certainly one of the better comedies to come out in the last year or so, being carried by the all the artistic choices made in the direction.

Black Panther (2018)
6/10
Tries to be different, but keeps pulling back to the same.
20 February 2018
I want to start this review saying that I think it's really silly that this movie has caused a political discussion. Not because the movie and marketing didn't ask for it, but after watching the film, the movie is really nothing more than another marvel film. The movie does things better and worse compared to other marvel films, but as it stands outside of the spectrum, it's predictable and isn't anything more than a superhero film. I'm very glad we have a superhero film that is this heavy in the representation of the black community during this age of popularity in superhero films, but that's really as far as any "political stance" should go into this film.

As a movie, it's fine. There wasn't any moment in the film where I felt impressed from what I was looking at, and there were times where I know Marvel can do better. Lets start with what I think it did superior to other marvel films.

1. The music. I think this is hands down the best original soundtrack we have gotten from a marvel film, and this is easily on par with the actual usage of their soundtrack outside of the guardian movies. Instead of being generic samey orchestra music that is used in every marvel film, we now have a soundtrack that sticks out from others in the franchise.

2. The villains. Marvel has been getting better with their villains since Guardians Vol 2. And this movie has two. Both of which were my favorite performances in the film, being Michael B Jordan and Andy Serkis respectfully. It's really refreshing also seeing a villain you can root for this time around.

3. The designs of the characters, world and weapons. How the CGI looked is a topic for later, but i loved the world of Wakanda and watching the characters walk around it. And every character had something in their design that felt right for the character they were playing.

And that's really about it. And those things listed above aren't anything real impressive, just good. Now for the negatives.

The CGI and all the effects were horrid. And I can't believe some people are trying to say it was passable. Every time the camera was zoomed out and black panther was on screen he looked straight out of a video game. It was superman in Justice League levels of bad. This goes for most of the environments, spaceships, animals etc. I know CGI is necessary for this movie and I'm not bashing CGI, but when you film outside couldn't you just use the outside? what's the point of the green screen and why does it look so bad? Anytime they were in a room that didn't have anything more than 1 level, it was clearly CGI city.

Also the jokes. Marvel movies are known for being pretty funny and generally I agree even when the jokes ruin perfectly good scenes, (cough cough Ragnarok, cough cough Guardians 2) the jokes in this movie gave me a smile at most. And I think a dreamworks executive might of mixed his script into this one because there is a "what are those" joke, a "I make it rain" joke, and a "whip her hair back and forth" joke. Way to slap a stamp on this movie that says "this was made in the 2010's"

While the negatives of this film affect my overall score pretty greatly as they are significant parts in the film, the rest of the film is very okay. The story and plot is okay. The dialogue outside of the jokes is okay. The action is okay. If it wasn't for the original setting and feel of the theme in the music this movie would be right alongside Doctor Strange and Ant Man as just another stepping stone for the marvel franchise. I'm glad I watched it, I still enjoyed it, I'm just really not rushing at all to see it again.

Tense and unpredictable in every way.
15 February 2018
This movie I went into almost blind, but I came out of the theater with it probably being my favorite film in the last year. This film is so smart at being able to keep you at the edge of your seat from simple things that they plug into the film. Heartbreaking and tense situations in the first half of the film come back in some shape or form that leave you questioning what is going to happen. There was genuinely no predicting what the characters were going to do and how they would react to certain events. This unpredictability doesn't just apply to situations, but possibly more notable in character arcs. Without giving to much away, there is a character in this film that does everything possible for you to hate them in the first half, and by the end of the film you are rooting for said character. There's times where the characters that you cared for are becoming real and dis-likable in certain scenes, but to the point of more so being genuinely worried about how their choices will affect them.

Every actor in this film did so tremendous as well. I really can't think of an actor or actress that outshines the rest. But if I had to pick favorites, Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell were just that. But a lot of that just has to go into the writing of the characters themselves. The cinematography in this film allows the actors to take advantage of facial expression. There's a scene relatively early in the film that is mostly sitting and staring but the actors have such convincing movements and gestures, it goes to a point where you don't need dialogue to tell what they are feeling and what they are thinking about.

Really the only issue I have in this film is some scenes felt a little unnecessary. Can't give away too much without spoiling, but in a film where every character goes through in arc, there's one character that is just there to break tension and crack personally unfunny jokes. But this character did not affect my score and they were barely in the film.

I highly recommend checking this out.
