Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (2023)
Meh
The episode feels like one of these low-budget ventures which can plague ST from time to time. Classic alternate timeline story, with abysmal plot holes. But overall feel is fun. Obviously, they wanted to go deeper in the characters at hand, which in a way was done pretty well.
Sometimes episodes act as glue for other episodes. Maybe we'll see later after-effects of the plotline later on.
There seems to be a reference to Shatner in this one. Kirk is eating a poutine in a bistro. Shatner, who was born in Montreal, surely would appreciate the nod to his native "delicacy".
Kirk eating poutine. I'm happy to have seen this in my lifetime.
Ted Lasso: Beard After Hours (2021)
A dream... or was it?
Completely psychedelic episode. If the idea was to give us a sense of losing ourselves in our thoughts like in some kind of a dream, bravo, well done. I assume writers also wanted to do an hommage to different movies. There is definitely a Kubrick/Clockwork Orange reference in there (tunnel fight). Would be curious if anyone else noticed others.
Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy (2021)
Spot on
I have been to Italy on a personal trip (with an Italian-Canadian chef of all people!) and what they are showing is spot on. We've been to Naples, from Formia going through the region where they make the mozzarella di bufala, and that's exactly the feeling we had. The exceptional link to the land, the narrow streets of Naples, which felt like Rome's punk sister - an exceptional city on its own, being in the shadow of the Vesuvius ... and the food! Great, great work, and excellent host. Good to showcase the locals - and keeping it in the original Italian... get use to subtitles, that what makes it so authentic! Looking forward to the remaining episodes, hope Lazio will be in there.
Star Trek: Discovery: Terra Firma, Part 2 (2020)
Not as bad as it seems
Not sure this is as bad as the bulk of reviews indicate. Am I captivated? No. Am I interested? Yes. I am not looking forward to every episode, I just catch up from time to time. Visually spectacular. Premises are pretty good. Nice winks to TOS (Guardian of Forever - I think they even used the same voice from TOS-, Mirror Universe, et tutti quanti). Acting is OK, but some crew members have no character development whatsoever, which makes it difficult for actors to develop any acting skills. I agree that there is way to much crying and whispering going on. Interestingly enough, I think Tilly is probably the best character/actor in the bunch. Everyone agrees that she "shouldn't be in charge", which indicates how good she is acting-wise... pretty sure that was the intent of the writers. All in all, I'll keep watching, just for the visual spectacle and to check out which vintage curveballs they'll be throwing at us.
10,000 BC (2008)
Does it ring a bell?
Okay, so the previews and trailers looked kind of nice. After all, who's against a good old prehistoric story (been a while since we've seen one of these around). Nevertheless, let's be clear on the reasons I went to this movie : bonding with my son and his two friends (age 14-15). They liked it a lot.
My official review for the movie, in front of them, is : great!
Now for the hard truth : it is awful. Actually, I should have known, it was an Emmerich movie. Good premise, great special effects, miserable plot with a climactic big fight to free enslaved tribes... Familiar ? Drum roll... Stargate! By Roland Emmerich!
Oh well, fool me twice...
Æon Flux (2005)
Really...
One of my friends got a few tickets for the avant-premiere. Ah, to get to see Charlize free ...
8 out of 10 ? Well, I'm getting old or some users didn't see the same movie. I had a tough time keeping myself awake. Some viewers even walked away in the middle of the thing. The girl next to me used her coat as a pillow - no kidding! There was an uncomfortable feeling in the audience - close to pity for Charlize. In what kind of boat did she get on ? You liked this ? Don't tell me : between 13 and 17 years old, right? The staff were checking out people with electronic gizmos to check for cameras, cell phones. I really don't see why they went to all the trouble. No one will bother to download it anyway.
