Suspiria (I) (2018)
7/10
Ambitious and unconventional, but way too overstuffed
3 January 2019
7-

Suspiria is definitely not your typical horror movie. While tension isn't really its thing, it manages really well to unsettle and disgust with its strong imagery, editing and sound design, all three top notch in my opinion. The main problem with it is probably due to the fact that it intends to tackle so many themes and thoughts and suggestions, that the ending result is a little too much to bear, and my only wish was for it no to be that way, too focused on giving a magniloquent message and not too much on giving its characters a richer and more compelling characterization. I still enjoyed the ride overall, and feel like praising it for its wild execution and ambition.

It sets the mood very well with great directing and editing, but the ending is quite predictable.

Definitely above the standard psychological thriller, thanks to an immaculate technical execution, but still in the realms of the "he was mad all along" formula. Still a very nice flick

The Terror (2018–2025)
8/10
A slow descent into madness
19 August 2018
If only he could see it, Lovecraft would be very proud. Even if I haven't seen many TV shows (mainly because the most I started watching weren't able to keep my interest high), the Terror managed to thrill me and involve me like never before, with a magnificent writing ,breathtaking scenery and chilling visuals. This is a show that takes its time, but it's definitely worth the wait, although you might want to turn a blind eye on the CG of some elements.

12 Strong (2018)

A painful, annoying headache
15 July 2018
A considerable budget lost on an embarrassing film, with shallow dialogues and a clueless direction. The characters are paper-thin, the screenplay repetitive and predictable, and all the other technical aspects (except maybe the many bombings) are disappointing to say the least. I just came out of the theatre tired and angry for the two hours and twenty minutes I had lost.

Unsane (2018)
7/10
"Misery" on iPhone plus social commentary.
10 July 2018
Unsane was a pleasant surprise, being not only unique because of its filming technique, but also thanks to how its apparently stereotypical plot was smartly developed by adding so many realistic and immersive elements in it. The movie "Misery" by Rob Reiner comes to mind quite often while watching, but that makes the movie only more enjoyable.

Nothing new here

Another entertaining yet painfully predictable movie, as always very nice to look at but still blandly written.

Slightly better than JW1, but still pretty dumb
8 June 2018
Maybe I shouldn't follow this franchise anymore, the age bar has been drastically lowered since the first three movies, now more appealing to children , but definitely unbearable for adults. The protagonists look like indestructible superheroes, dealing with hyperbolic situations that would most certainly be fatal in the real world, and easily getting out of them without consequences. There's no more love for the craft, just blandness filling (almost) every single scene and no concreteness whatsoever. Another forgettable attempt to exploit the original.

Antichrist (2009)
8/10
A unique, disturbingly raw piece of art

This movie was a blast for me, both bone-chilling and stomach-turning, but at the same time profoundly rich in meaning. Aside from prologue and epilogue, so "delicately" filmed and edited, the main dish is often too brutal, both visually and conceptually, delivering a truly unforgettable experience. Both an omage to horror movies and a beast of its own, Antichrist will sure leave you shocked.

Just pure , mindless entertainment

This movie sure won't be remembered for its intellectual content , neither for its original contribution to the sci fi genre, but there's still at least more than something to look at, like wildly entertaining action scenes and stunning visual effects , and that's basically why the movie was made in the first place. All characters are in fact extremely thin and the plot quite predictable.

Hostiles (2017)

Stunning, but also redundant and cheap in its message
29 March 2018
This movie is a joy to the eyes, the photography is majestic and variegated, but the visuals are unfortunately the only remarkable thing in it, as well as some of the performances. That's because I've found the writing particularly bland and repetitive, with many slow paced and uninteresting dialogues, and a main character whose path to redemption was way too simple and badly developed. Again, I have nothing against simple storylines, but this one was definitely hard to care for in all of its predictability and lacking of ideas.

Silver Bullet (1985)

Critics too harsh on this
22 March 2018
I definitely didn't expect a masterpiece, but Silver Bullet can sure count on many good and suspenceful scenes, unfortunally weighted down by a few unhappy ones that didn't manage to do them justice. The make up too is rather fickle, but overall the movie doesn't disappoint, being also rather faithful to the beautiful Stephen Kings' short novel.

A really clever and exquisitely grotesque attempt from James Gunn, that gives us his vision of the everyday hero, not sparing any gore or violence and leaving us in the end completely unarmed with an heartbreaking conclusion.

A fascinating, gorgeous looking epic

Beowulf doesn't disappoint for the most part, delivering a mature and dark setting filled with demons and heroes broken by lust and desire for power. The graphics are still amazing to look at after more than ten years, and the score is definitely fitting.

Not always solid, but still a worthy sci fi

Few times not wholly convincing, and more often not fully exploited considered its huge potential, Annihilation is still a pretty unique sci fi movie, both visually and conceptually. Only remorse the fact that I couldn't watch it on a movie theatre screen.

Dunkirk (2017)

Immersive and visually immaculate, but not fully engaging

I know this is not supposed to be the average war movie where you root for the protagonists but more of a "documentary" take on the genre, and I appreciate the intention, but in the end it often felt a little too repetitive and not as special as I expected it to be. Sure, there are a few memorable scenes, expecially in the beginning, but from then on there are very few surprises. The soundtrack was unexpectedly annoying most of the time.

This movie has a peculiar way to tell its story, perfect in order to develop its main two characters and their tormented love story. I've probably never been more interested in a romance than by watching Nocturnal Animals, It is such an intriguing development that left me in awe until the end.

A very simple yet heartfelt story

It's not Del Toro's best movie, but it's definitely still worth watching for many reasons : from a technical standpoint there's basically nothing to criticize, it really manages to drag the viewer into a sort of parallel reality, a world that is both familiar and fantastic, and the monster's look doesn't break the illusion cause it's so well done it won't look fake. Although the whole story doesn't add anything new to the genre, and it's a little too plain to be honest, all the characters manage to keep you interested in their development and overall look. The message the movie delivers is heavy, but not heavily handled by the movie itself.

Insanely good looking movie that goes even higher than the original
15 February 2018
8 1/2

It's a solid sequel that doesn't hang too much on the elements of the previous movie, with just a few callbacks that are still well integrated in the plot and not just thrown there with no bond, but It is also an amazing movie on its own : Villeneuve imposes his style without being unfaithful to the overall atmosphere and feeling of the first Blade Runner. Roger Deakins does a masterful job once again and the soundtrack is awesome.

The Commuter (I) (2018)

Mostly mindless (yet sometimes flawed) entertainment

Warning: Spoilers

As an action/thriller movie, I was entertained by it, there were definitely no superfluous or boring scenes that could have been cut away, but there were a few things that kinda bothered me. Aside from the protagonist's invincibility and the directing that was very distracting at times, by the end of the film I had to witness a few of those infamous moments that generally aim to deliver some kind of comic relief to the situation, and the ending itself was pretty much an overly cathartic, almost disneyan ending.

Too confused and unfocused
25 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I have to say, this movie could have been way more intriguing and surprising If it just wasn't so badly written. Too much is left unexplained, and the whole movie is too disjointed : that's a pity because there were a few choices that I really appreciated, like Sam Neill's character slowly revealing himself as the villain, or the ending that leaves some sort of ambiguity with the last shot. The directing and the editing look fine most of the time, but during some scenes they drastically lower. Another missed opportunity

A gripping story with a "biblical" feel to it
24 January 2018
Literary references aside, this movie truly grasps the spectator until the end, with its perpetual ambiguity and the amazing performances given both by Shannon and Chastain. Although slow, there's never anything redundant or superfluous, not even the dream sequences, that give more pathos and dread to the whole story, that comes to life also thanks to an amazing cinematography and a dreamy score.

You're Next (2011)

Inventive and surprisingly funny at times
24 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
7 1/2

"You're next" is unexpectedly good, switching from the classic home invasion thriller to (kind of) a black comedy, when we get to a sort of caricature of most of the characters, but does well in both cases. Some of the twists were a little predictable, but there are so many in it that it definitely cannot be counted as a major flaw.

Stories set on trains have always fascinated me a lot , but this one is definitely a fresh addition, a unique movie that is far from being your everyday blockbuster, with an unexpectedly deep commentary on society and stunning visuals.

The Midnight Man (III) (2016)

Completely tasteless
14 January 2018

I already knew, even before watching it, that this was a pretty bad movie, but I didn't expect it to take itself so seriously since the beginning. And with all that, the acting was kinda crap and the story was one of the most recycled plots of all time. But the main issue with this movie is definitely the horror factor, because believe me, there's basically none : the entity is just lame and keeps talking throughout the film, shutting down any feeling of distress or fear the public could have towards it. Even the jumpscares were the most idiotics I've seen in a long time, definitely lazy and predictable to me, and i'm not even a jumpscare fan.

Easily avoidable, save your time

This movie offers a wide range of emotions, and its effort to stir together different identities is definitely not in vain, managing to give us spectators a story that has even something to say.
