Worst Cooks in America (2010)
Loved this show until season 23
I'm one of those people who has the tv on all day. I like to find a show and just let it run endlessly.
And this one WAS great. Watching people go from being CONVINCED that they just absolutely could not cook to being able to hear honest feedback, take it in, and make a change was really extraordinary to watch.
Until season 23. The games became absurd, as did the contestants. The amount of screaming and carrying on makes the show unwatchable. And if you watch season 23 (which featured pairs of contestants, who knew each other) the loudest most obnoxious people are the ones that make it to the finale. Both of them. (as a result, I did not watch the finale.)
And then they come back, again, and again. I don't know why they're called "audience favorites" (Season 25, episode 9) because if you look at the individual show ratings, you'll see that this did not do anything for the show.
Sad. Because, even though I can cook, I actually learned a lot watching this. But I am done.
Christmas at the Greenbrier (2022)
Completely Trope-y, but cute and sweet
There is not a single thing that happens in this movie that is surprising. I'd say that the following are spoilers, but that's not possible with the number of tropes.
Young, beautiful widow works at the hotel where she and her family spent Christmas when she was growing up. And where she met her first serious boyfriend, who left to become a pro football quarterback. Now he's newly retired and he and his family are back at the hotel. She protests, but they get back together, until he's offered a new contract. What will he do? You'll have to watch to find out, but I'm certain you can guess.
But it's sweet, and the actors are pretty to look at. If you're busy wrapping gifts or baking cookies, turn it on and let it run. No foul language, nudity or other inappropriate content that you'd be embarrassed if your kids came in the room.
Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist: Zoey's Extraordinary Memory (2021)
INCREDIBLE filmmaking!
Besides the great storyline and EXCELLENT musical numbers... rewatch the sequence starting when Mo gets the fire certificate. IT IS ONE CONTINUOUS SHOT!!! Simply incredible! For those who know nothing of filmmaking, this it a MONUMENTAL TASK. Everyone - every actor, singer, dancer, extra, camera, microphone and all of their operators MUST be in the exact right place at the exact right time, or it doesn't work. And if anybody screws up anything at any point, there's no place to stop and just pick it back up. They would totally have to start again. Just incredible! Well done!
Making It (2018)
Thank you, Amy Poehler
Thank you so much for a sweet show that the whole family can watch. In a world where everything is so nasty, rude and crude, it's nice to turn on a show where people seem to genuinely like each other. And, even thought it's a competition, people helped one another - on more than one occasion. Please make a second season... I'll definitely be watching!
How to Get Away with Murder (2014)
Oh, enough already!
I've finally decided to go ahead and create an IMDb account just for the sake of writing this review. I gave up on the show in the middle of the fourth episode. It actually looks very, very promising. I love Viola Davis - she is a fantastic actress. Not sure whether the legal aspects or realistic or not, as others have noted, but that wasn't my issue. Also, the murder that's shown in bits and pieces throughout the episodes was intriguing. I really wanted to know how the characters found themselves in the position they were in. But it was another position entirely that made me give up on the show.
I understand that the LGBT community is very important to those in Hollywood, and that anything I say next will probably have some of you labeling me as homophobic, but the amount of promiscuous gay sex between people that had only just met was just too much. This is a show about lawyers and murder. And I would have been just as offended if one of the female characters was sleeping around with a different guy in every episode.
In short, enough, Hollywood, enough. I don't have a problem with people that are gay, but I don't have any gay friends or family members, either - there's not "one in EVERY family" (even if they had been previously heterosexual) as is now portrayed on EVERY show and movie. This isn't even the first show I've given up on for this reason - this one was so over the top, I even felt the need to write a review. And I'll be totally surprised if it gets posted.
